Wicker and plain baskets in the interior

Baskets in the interior

Baskets began to be made in antiquity, when the first weaving techniques appeared from improvised materials (mainly vines). They were supplemented with handles or special straps for carrying on the back. Initially, containers replaced modern bags and bags, which usually store products or small items. Small baskets called baskets. They often went to the forest for berries or mushrooms. Capacities that were used as household utensils were called bodies. Now wicker baskets in the interior are mainly used to decorate the room. They simultaneously perform both decorative and practical functions, as they also become an additional storage system. Let's talk about what styles are combined with baskets and from what materials they are made.

All about baskets

Baskets are classified by material and manufacturing technology, size, shape. They can also be closed (have covers) or open. As for the material, the following varieties are mainly used:

  • Birch bark. The top layer of birch bark is peeled and cut into thin, wide strips. They make strong but light baskets and boxes. In the latter, firewood and other heavy contents were previously carried. Such an element fits perfectly into the ethnic Russian interior. Complete with log cabin walls, homespun paths, clay “glitches”, massive chests and embroidered pillows, baskets will help bring the atmosphere closer to authentic.
  • Willow twigs. The material was used universally for the manufacture of wicker furniture, fences and containers. Dark willow vine, like grapevine, has flexibility and durability. Baskets from it will last a long time. As a rule, products are large and are used to carry weighty contents.
  • Raffia. The material is a dense, “fluffy” rope made of natural fibers that are extracted from the leaves of the same palm. Baskets are soft, easy to fold. Not bad similar option looks in the African ethnic style.
  • Water hyacinth. Baskets from this material are made by special technology. The surface of the product has a specific pattern, which resembles a set of facial loops knitted on knitting needles. Original decor is combined with Provence, Scandinavian style, country.
  • Rattan. The processed stems of tropical liana (calamus) for the domestic market have remained exotic. Durable baskets with solid walls are woven from rods without the “gaps” and elegant weaves traditional for the Russian style. High, slightly expanding upwards tanks are considered a necessary interior element in the African style and a number of ethnic areas native to Latin America.
  • Bamboo. The baskets made of material are light and elegant. In the manufacture of rarely resort to complex weaving.A set of bamboo strips are usually simply sewn with white thread. This option is ideal for minimalism and Japanese style.
  • Jute. The material is usually used to make burlap or ropes. Natural fibers have a pleasant whitish tint. Soft, pliable baskets will not hold their shape well, which is easy to fix with a skeleton. More often, such containers are still used as “pocket” ones, that is, if necessary, they can be rolled up and hidden until better times.
  • Tapes made of plastic. PVC began to be used everywhere. Plastic products are cheap, but they will last quite a while. The material can have a wide variety of shades or textures. Baskets are easy to wash, not afraid of moisture, so they can be used in the bathroom or in the kitchen.

Interior with baskets

Baskets can be crocheted from knitted yarn (knitting needles), made with your own hands from paper, wood and even metal.

Baskets are still divided into types depending on the functional purpose. For example, gardinieres were used for storing and transferring flowers. Gabions that did not have a bottom were filled with earth or stones and used as protection against stray bullets during military operations (sandbags were replaced). Now this decor is no longer related to the military style, but has become a universal decoration for summer cottages (instead of a fence). The purses were soft and folded compactly if necessary. For carrying hay, they used shoulder warp. In large sorcerers and smaller petarians, livestock was fed.

Original furniture sets have recently appeared on the furniture market. Instead of traditional drawers, they use baskets with side handles. The furniture really looks cozy, neat and slightly rustic. Retractable baskets will come to the rescue again. Moreover, they can be made wide or narrow in accordance with the particular configuration of the room.On the shelf under the mirror near the sink, the chaos of combs, scissors, cotton pads and sticks is easy to organize if you buy a group of miniature baskets with lids. Basket Care Tips

Baskets are very unpretentious in leaving. The surface of the product should only be periodically wiped with a dry, soft cloth from dust. If the container was taken with you to a picnic, for example, to the beach, then it must be thoroughly shaken from small grains of sand. If necessary, a basket of vines or birch bark should even be vacuumed. If during the trip to the forest berries or mushrooms were transferred in the container that leave stains, then they can get rid of dirt with a sponge and a cleaning agent without an abrasive effect. Aggressive household chemicals, of course, are not recommended, otherwise you will have to buy a new basket. Do not try to wipe the stains from blueberry juice. First, red, and then quickly blackening traces from this berry are practically not removed. Therefore, it is better to go on a hike for blueberries with a jar or a plastic bucket. Do not place baskets near heat sources (stoves, stoves, fireplaces, heating radiators). A container made of rattan, birch bark, and vines will twist and lose shape. Bamboo baskets are more resistant to temperature. Products from jute, raffia, water hyacinth and plastic are almost not afraid of heat. Although the latter can melt at high temperatures. It is not recommended to carry heavy loads in those baskets that are not designed for such loads. This is fraught with deformation of the bottom, with its subsequent separation from the walls.

Old baskets can be restored and updated. To do this, a layer of drying oil, stain and varnish is applied to the surface.

DIY interior basket

Do-it-yourself baskets of knitted yarn are most often made with your own hands. These are not ordinary threads, but textile “strings” tied into one, which used to be T-shirts, nylon tights or blouses. Old things are simply cut into strips of stripes of the same width. The "thread" is thick, and the weave is dense, without openwork holes. The interior basket can be colorful, bright, combine several shades or have a plain surface. The dimensions will depend entirely on the functional purpose: the more things it should contain, the wider its bottom and higher the sides. For work, you only need textile yarn, a needle, scissors and a hook. Weaving begins with the Amigurumi ring. It will become the middle of the bottom of the future basket. Gradually, loops are added to each row so that the bottom does not wrap like a bowl. In a simple version, they give it a round shape. It is easier for a beginner to work with such a basket. Then go to the circular weaving of the walls. Here the number of loops will remain the same, since such baskets usually have straight sides, without expanding upward. A few rows to the extreme rim, leave spaces under the handles. The surface of the product is decorated with a simple but beautiful “pigtail” pattern.

Conclusion

It is believed that baskets fit perfectly with flower buds. In the classic interior, a bouquet of exquisite roses harmonizes only with expensive porcelain or crystal vases. In a more “rustic” setting, a wicker made of twigs will emphasize the simplicity and elegance of wildflowers or garden flowers, surrounded by fragrant herbs. In baskets, you can "store" compositions of dried plants. Living bouquets will also stand for a long time if they are collected on a floral sponge pre-soaked in water. Fruit baskets on the dining table will be his decoration and give homemade opportunity to “kill the worm” before dinner. Braids on the terraces or in the gazebos emphasize the rustic flavor of the cottage.Rough weaving, decorated with burlap and twine, complement the decor of the bedroom or living room. If they are hung on the carnations against the wall, then the container will not “get underfoot”, but will fulfill its main function. Groups of hanging baskets adorn hallways and summer cottages.
