How to choose a carpet

How to choose a carpet

Carpets firmly entered man's life many millennia ago, covering the walls and floors of his home. In the East, the palace was often used for sleeping; in the northern countries it provided high-quality thermal insulation in conditions of constant cold. In later, “Soviet times,” the element placed on the wall helped to ignore the noisy neighbors living behind a thin wall, and was also a symbol of luxury. How to choose a carpet with a modern variety of materials, colors, sizes, will tell designers involved in the selection of home textiles.

Interior features with carpet

The room where the carpet is laid looks much more comfortable than the room without it. Many representatives of today's youth consider this subject a remnant of the USSR, completely ignoring it. But modern models are very different from the eerie "beauty" that hung on the walls of almost all the "Khrushchevs", "Stalin" literally until the mid-90s of the 20th century. The latest options are much easier to clean from dirt, dust, painted brightly, decorated with fantastic patterns, abstract, plot pictures that have very clear graphics.

Now carpets do not hang on the walls, but put only on the floor. Why do we need such a palace:

  • visually creates coziness, even when the room is huge - the spaces designed in this way look aesthetically pleasing and “at home”;
  • the product perfectly absorbs noise, which is especially important when there are always running children and pets in the apartment;
  • it’s not cold to walk on such a coating, including in poorly insulated rooms, stable humidity is always maintained;
  • rigid, dense, textured models have a therapeutic effect on the human body, if you constantly walk on them barefoot - due to the massage effect of some points on the feet;
  • beautiful, well-matched model, pleasing to the eye, creates the necessary interior accent;
  • a huge variety of materials, sizes, colors allows you to choose a suitable palace in any room.

Certain disadvantages of carpets also exist:

  • difficulty in leaving - such things must be periodically knocked out, cleaned, removed inevitably stains;
  • a beautiful, high-quality item is expensive, although it serves for a long time without losing its appearance;
  • cheap carpets made of synthetic materials strongly accumulate dust, static electricity, wear out in just a few years.

Key selection criteria

They choose things for the home in many ways - various factors are decisive for different people. Quality is one of the most important criteria, it depends on the material of manufacture, production method. Cheap carpets are rarely of high quality. Density, structure, pile length, pattern, organoleptic qualities are no less important. Also draws attention to the shape, design, dimensions, colors

The final price depends on the method, production technique. Handmade rugs are most often “piece”, unique products, usually very expensive. Machine - much cheaper, they are dense, durable. There are wicker (having high or low pile), woven (lint-free).

Production material - advantages, disadvantages

Modern carpets are made from very different materials:

  • silks;
  • Wool
  • fur;
  • nylon;
  • cotton
  • acrylic;
  • bamboo;
  • jute;
  • viscose;
  • polyester;
  • polypropylene;
  • fiber blends.

The price, appearance, wear resistance, ease of care, and durability depend on which fibers are used to create the palace.

Bamboo carpet

Wool

Wool is a natural material. Woolen options are practical, have low thermal conductivity, excellent noise absorption, durability. They are mainly made from sheep wool. The material burns poorly, does not emit toxic substances. The composition of the wool contains animal wax - lanolin, which has a beneficial effect on human health. The disadvantages of the coating are the ability to accumulate static electricity, poor stainability, and moth damage. Such carpets are produced mainly in "natural" colors - gray, brown, white, black.

Wool Carpet

Silk

The material is also completely natural, consists of the finest fiber produced by a silkworm caterpillar. The finished product has a very beautiful appearance, bewitching shine, lasting for many years. Such a rug is soft, elastic, durable, pleasant to the touch. He is able to "chill" in the heat, warm in the cold.The item is relatively expensive, with improper washing, it fades, in the sun it fades.

Silk rug

Viscose

Viscose is a cross between natural and artificial material. The fiber is made from cellulose extracted from coniferous wood (pine, spruce). It is obtained chemically. Externally, the finished mat resembles silk, although less durable. It is inexpensive, not electrified, has a nice delicate texture. The main disadvantage is the increased ability to absorb water, therefore it is not advisable to wash it, but only process it in a dry way.

Rayon Carpet

Nylon

Nylon or polyamide is a strong, wear-resistant, highly durable artificial material. It is not eaten by microorganisms, insects. The finished carpet from it does not lose its shape for a long time, it has a beautiful appearance, does not burn well, is well washed, dries quickly. It is brightly colored, but it is able to fade in the sun, is highly electrified, and if improperly maintained, it becomes brittle and hard, because most products are treated with special compounds that prevent stains.

Nylon Carpet

Polypropylene

Polypropylene includes several state-of-the-art materials - hit set, terclone, etc. All carpet models made from them have high heat resistance, moisture resistance, they are hypoallergenic, antistatic. The hit set is as similar to sheep’s wool as possible, it does not fade in the sun, gets dirty badly, almost does not absorb liquids, which allows you to use products from it both in the nursery and in the kitchen, in the hallway.

Polypropylene carpet

Polyester

Polyester or polyester fiber is a very fertile material. It feels like wool to the touch, resistant to direct sunlight, mold. It perfectly “holds” heat, is poorly dirty, has a beautiful texture. Usually, such things are produced with long hair, but are poorly stained, because their colors are only natural.

Pile structure

Pile happens:

  • split - this is cut in the upper part or trimmed pile.A carpet made in this way is not too durable, but it looks beautiful, sophisticated;
  • looped - the surface is covered with small or large loops, the item is as durable as possible, suitable for rooms where a lot of people go. There are single-level models (the entire pile is of the same height), multi-level (loops of different heights, of which a textured pattern is made);
  • combined - there are both split fragments and loop fragments.
    Carpets with a split look of pile have various properties, depending on the degree of twist of the latter, its length. The classification is approximately as follows:
  • velor is a “plush” rug with a low split pile of the same length over the entire surface. The item comes out soft, fluffy, but any dirt, such as traces of shoes, are very noticeable on it;
  • Saxony is a long-piled, heavily twisted yarn that is thermally fixed. The villi here are always strictly vertical, the surface looks like a woolen, very “grainy” one. Euro Saxony's villi are thinner;
  • shag (another type of Saxony) - has a long pile (up to 35 mm), rough. This option looks luxurious, expensive, but poorly cleaned;
  • frize - the yarn from which the palace is made is tightly twisted, has a medium pile height. Dirt on such a “background” is not too visible, the rug does not crease, but it is difficult to clean it;
  • scroll - on the surface a trimmed loop cover, very strong, voluminous, wear-resistant. For the manufacture of using yarn of three or more colors, performing colorful intricate patterns.

Web density

An important indicator of quality is the density of the carpet. Strength, wear resistance, clarity of the pattern depend on this factor. The more knots per square meter, the more elegant the pattern, and the carpet itself is denser. The described value also depends on the height and thickness of the threads - the higher the better.

It is not difficult to check the density - the thing is bent, and if the pile is very visible on the bend, then the density is low, but the product itself is softer to the touch. Such a coating is suitable only for rooms where there is little traffic. Practically nothing is scary for a very dense pile - even a prolonged exposure to heavy furniture with legs.

Density is divided into categories:

  • rough knitting - up to 50,000 knots per square meter. (It is made of very thick, coarse threads, optimally suitable for door, country rugs);
  • low density - up to 100,000 nodules;
  • average - up to 200,000 knots (suitable for an "uninhabited" apartment);
  • excellent - up to 325,000 nodules;
  • high - up to 500,000 knots;
  • very high - up to 1,000,000 nodules;
  • exceptional - over 1,000,000 knots (these are only completely silk items).

The most commonly used models are the number of nodes per square meter. m. 250,000 - 350,000. Too dense carpets are heavy, therefore difficult to care for.

Thick carpet

The size

The dimensions of the textile “object” are almost any - the maximum size is limited only by the area of the room. In a very large stelth, the palace is quite large, slightly not reaching the walls, or somewhat smaller - highlighting local zones. If the door opens inward, then from it to the carpet should be at least 50-70 cm of space - this area is most susceptible to pollution. The furniture is fully placed with all legs on the carpet or not at all - distortions are unacceptable.

To reduce expansion, a carpet is also well suited - light and plain makes the room more spacious, dark, teeming with contrasting ornaments - visually narrows. The item should optimally match the room design. The standard store sizes of the rugs are approximately as follows:

  • 120 by 180 cm .;
  • 150 by 210 cm;
  • 180 by 270 cm;
  • 240 by 300 cm;
  • 270 by 360 cm.

For “import” manufacturers, the sizes are slightly different, because the place where the coating will be laid is indicated in advance, for example, using colored tape. If the goods received by mail, purchased via the Internet, are very different from what is needed, then a larger one is preferable.

Most often, a carpet in rooms such as a bedroom, a nursery, a living room is the largest item in the room.

Small rug

The form

In shape, carpet products are usually made square, round, rectangular, with an approximate aspect ratio of 1 to 0.62, equal to the "golden section". Oval models of various sizes, carpet paths sold by meters are also often produced. Less commonly, asymmetric variants, original models in the form of rhombuses, hexagons, “legs”, animals, animal skins, hearts, flowers. With the help of a certain form of floor objects, the shape of the room is easily adjusted, the necessary accents are placed, zoning is performed. If it is necessary to “smooth” the interior when the furniture has smooth shapes, oval models are chosen, as well as with wavy edges. A square is laid in a room of an appropriate shape or zoned more elongated.

Rectangular Carpet

Design, color scheme

The design of the carpet is the priority of the choice in the vast majority of cases. With the help of such products, a bright accent is created in the room, it becomes unique, stylish. But sharply contrasting, decorated with intricate and clear patterns, the palace is suitable only when the main background is pale, monophonic. If there are enough various bright little things in the room, the rug is used as discreet, plain as possible.

The color of the product is usually selected for furniture, but it should not merge with it - the ornament, texture, shade should differ markedly. It is also acceptable that the colors of the palace match the tone of the curtains, wall coverings, color of the floor, decorative objects, but excessive “colorfulness” should be avoided without overloading the interior.

In cramped northern, dimly lit rooms, mainly light mats of warm colors are laid. Spacious, with windows facing south - darker, colder colors.

Brightly colored rug

Style

The presence of carpets is acceptable in almost any interior style:

  • classic - a large object is decorated with intricate ornaments with monograms, arabesques, colors - light, restrained;
  • loft - artificially aged, deliberately worn product, muffled main color;
  • minimalism - the correct form, small or medium sizes. Only plain, mostly light;
  • Provence - delicate color, small floral, vegetable, fruit prints;
  • Scandinavian - fluffy, warm, bright, resembles the skin of an animal;
  • African - mainly “animal” prints (zebra, tiger, leopard, etc.), yellow, red, chocolate shades;
  • Chinese - bright, sophisticated images of dragons, sakura blossoms, etc .;
  • ecological - coarse, as natural as possible, very textured, natural shades;
  • shebby-chic - pastel shades, mainly floral ornaments;
  • vintage - shabby "grandmother" carpet;
  • brutal - a black-brown, blue product that performs only utilitarian functions;
  • art carpet - an image of one of the famous paintings of any artist.

Loft Carpet

The choice of carpet depending on the room

For different rooms, carpet products of various sizes, shapes, designs are selected. Before you start choosing the right option, you should consider in which room the item will be located, how often and many people walk there, how much the carpet will get dirty. The greater the "load" on the product, the more durable materials for it are used. In rooms where there is a high risk of pollution, the most non-marked rugs are laid.

The mat is selected for the existing design, but you can do the opposite - to equip the interior with respect to the palace, all decor, textiles, wall design, choosing based on its appearance. When determining the maximum dimensions of the carpet, 15-30 cm recede from the walls. In other versions, the edges of the rug 40-50 cm extend beyond the boundaries of a sofa, bed, or other similar furniture. In the dining area on the palace should be placed a table with all the chairs.

Room with carpet on the floor

Living room

The hall is usually the largest room in the apartment, and therefore a large carpet is needed for it. Excessively small objects look poor, wretched, but for zoning the room into small areas are quite acceptable. Most often, the palace is placed in the center, in the combined space, in the studio apartment, several of them are allowed, but everyone should have different sizes. It is important to observe the style of the room, do not overload it, choosing a rug for the design of walls, curtains, decor. Usually they put here luxurious, but not the most wear-resistant options.

Carpet in the living room

Bedroom

The carpet in the bedroom is designed to create comfort, "soft" design. Here they usually go barefoot, do morning exercises, because the palace is selected warm, fluffy, mostly long-nap. Soundproofing is also very important, as it is most comfortable to sleep in silence. The shape of the object is taken according to the configuration of the room, the color is soothing, delicate. Peach, pale blue, transparent green, beige, other similar tones will do.

Children

For children, a large fluffy rug is the best solution. All kids love to play on the floor more than on a bed or sofa, so choosing a warm cover is very important. It is advisable to purchase a product that is not too easily soiled, which is not electrified, does not contain poorly “fixed” dyes that can remain on delicate skin. Drawings with cartoon characters, mazes of roads, cute pets, and bright abstract prints are very popular.

The palace must be purchased warm, soft, pleasant to the touch. Moreover, it should not be electrified, be as natural as possible, and be easily cleaned of dirt (pieces of food, paints, felt-tip pens, etc.). A long pile here is completely unacceptable. The age of the child also matters - for small ones, yellow-orange, lime-green objects, decorated with clear colorful prints, are selected, adolescents often choose dark tones to help focus.Suitable fibers are a mixture of synthetic and natural fibers in a one to one ratio.

Carpet in the nursery

Hallway

The mat for the hallway in shape directly depends on it. For an elongated, long corridor, “paths” are acquired, and a square one — of an appropriate shape. The pollution here is high, as well as the patency of the room, because the load on the palace is high. Therefore, the carpet is selected durable, moisture resistant, one that is easy to clean and wash. Usually this is a synthetic product with a short nap, expensive, overly fluffy models for the corridor are unacceptable - they quickly wear out, lose their appearance, require replacement.

Carpet in the hallway

Kitchen

The kitchen carpet is non-marking, durable, harmoniously blending into the interior of this room. Here he is usually placed near the sofa, including the corner. It is desirable that the palace was saturated with a special composition that has a water-repellent, dirt-repellent effect. The product itself is not too large - if desired, it can easily wash in the machine, shake out manually. For the kitchen, the most commonly used are non-marking items made of artificial materials that are highly resistant to household chemicals. The best colors are gray-beige, red-brown with small patterns - on such a coating debris and spots are almost invisible.

When the kitchen floor is covered with ceramic tiles, the rug is simply necessary - it drowns out the sounds of steps, gives comfort, fills the room with warmth.

Carpet in the kitchen

Bathroom

Bath mats are made in the form of hypertrophied feet, less often - handprints. The most common option is rectangular blue, green, “sea-green” products. Ideal combinations, regardless of the interior design - white with blue, pinkish with pale violet and others like that. Humidity in this room is high, because the material from which the mat is made must withstand constant humidity, dry quickly, be well-treated from mold, fungus.Acrylic and polyester are best suited here - they are as moisture resistant as possible, but soft. Cotton items are lightweight, warm, fluffy and dry quickly, letting in air.

The underside of the toilet mat, bathtub must be textured, non-slip - otherwise it will become traumatic.

Expert advice on caring for different types of carpets

Daily care of any rugs - vacuum or sweep. The use of household chemicals, “folk remedies” is acceptable, but different materials are used for different materials - care tips are usually written on the label. Pet hair is removed with a stiff brush, dirt is removed with a damp sponge.

Dry cleaning is necessary if contaminants cannot be removed by other means. When choosing, designers are advised to carefully examine the edges - the seam on them should be as strong as possible, neatly stitched. It is better to store an unused palace in folded form; objects made of natural materials are necessarily processed from moths.

It is advisable to decide exactly what functions the coating will perform before the purchase - ideally, it should simultaneously warm, create comfort, provide noise insulation, and decorate.

Carpet Care

Conclusion

The right choice of a suitable dark or light palace in an apartment, a private mansion, should be based on personal preferences, ideas about the beauty of a particular room. The floor carpet is able to decorate any room, with good care it retains its appearance for a long time, does not cause any health problems. The fashion for such products is constantly changing, but the designers are unanimous in their opinion that the carpet should necessarily be combined with other room textiles, furniture, walls, and decor.

I love needlework and everything connected with it. Especially home-made furnishings are my passion!
