Wrought iron beds in the interior

Forged beds have been used in the interior for a long time. These furnishings do not age or go out of style. By forging is meant the process of deformation of a metal (heated or cooled) under the influence of a press or hammer, that is, its decoration. The finer the pattern, the finer the work of the master, and accordingly the higher the price for the finished product. The history of blacksmithing originates in the depths of centuries. It began at a time when a person learned to make fire and "got acquainted" with metal. In Russia, blacksmiths were one of the most respected people in the villages, along with the elders. Sometimes superstitious residents attributed to them even supernatural abilities, supposedly the metal processing process was a matter of an exclusively mystical nature. It is possible that the transformations that the heated foundation underwent really seemed to people a miracle.

Now metal forging is just a physical process that obeys the laws of this science. Although without the delicate artistic taste of the master, the product will be just that stamping, without the "soul" that the blacksmith puts into his work. With the help of forging, elements of the exterior of the house and the design of the site are created: fences, peaks, arbors, gates, gratings for windows and doors. Indoor use forged beds, mirror frames, railings, chandeliers, candlesticks, tables, hanging shelves, separate fireplace elements and stands for indoor plants.

Features of forged products and manufacturing options

Forged products have a long service life. On average, the “lifespan” of a structure is more than 100 years. You can even leave your forged bed a legacy for children, because it will retain its original appearance.

According to the temperature to which the disc is brought (a piece of raw material), two types of forging are distinguished:

ColdIt is used mainly in jewelry. Cool copper, silver or gold.
HotIt is used for manual work.

By the nature of the work, the classification is as follows:

StampingIn this case, special hollow forms are used, that is, the blank is limited on all sides, and when heated, it fills the voids and acquires the desired shape.
ManualProcurement is not limited at all or only partially. All work is done manually (as the name implies) using a hammer.
MachineFor forging, special units are used, which are equipped with heavy hammers or presses that deform the metal.

It should be noted that the harder the steel, the lower the maximum temperature of its heating. The fact is that soft material crystallizes more slowly during cooling. Overheating of steel is fraught with the formation of "grains" and a violation of the integrity of the disc. It can crack or even shatter into pieces from one blow of the hammer. There is such a thing as a burn. In this case, the chemical structure of the steel is violated, it begins to actively lose carbon, which brings it closer to iron. Such material is unsuitable for work. He burned much more dangerous than overheating, since it is already impossible to fix it.

There is also another classification according to the processing method:

  • Plain. The entire product is made from one disc.
  • Welding. It combines preheated parts.
  • Crimp kritz. The basis is taken material heated to a pasty state. By forging, its smallest particles are compacted and welded to each other, and slag is released in parallel with this process.

For a particular type of product, one or another processing method is used. The beds are made in parts due to their large size, and then welded into a solid structure.

Methods for making forged beds

Forged beds are made mainly by two methods:

  • Stamping;
  • Handmade.

The price of stamped is many times lower, because they are made faster and are not unique. During manual work, the master spends much more time, but it turns out an exclusive, one might even say a designer product. It can be made according to customer designs.

The process itself is conditionally divided into several stages:

  • Heating blanks (steel base). Gradually melt the oven to the stage of dark red heat. At this stage, preheated material is placed in it.The last nuance is very important, since a cold blank from a sharp temperature drop in the outer and inner layers can give cracks and tears that will not be visually visible, but will make themselves felt when crimping. The material is heated to a temperature maximum (a separate threshold is set for a metal of different hardness) and removed from the furnace.
  • The next step will be crimping. Here the master begins to forge a blank. The townsfolk may assume that the metal inside has a dense structure, in fact, this is not so. Microscopic cavities and “tunnels” are hidden under the top layer. It is necessary to get rid of them, that is, to “squeeze” the blank: to compress the heated material with a hammer.
  • Harvesting. Almost the final stage. During preparation, the blank is given the desired shape and adjusted to the required dimensions. It turns out to be an almost finished product, but still with rough outlines. This process, in turn, is divided into several types: the preparation of rings, flat things of solid and hollow cylinders.
  • The final finish. At this stage, the product is finally customized under excise. It is cleared of cracks, chipping and “bypassing” the hammer again. In parallel, use cold water, which is doused with the product. As a result, scale forms, which positively affects the smoothness of the surface. They complete the work by priming the surface and staining it.

When heated, scale forms on the disc surface. It partially disappears during crimping, and the rest is removed with a broom. Because of this layer, the pig loses a small part of its original size. For this reason, they take it a little more than the part they want to receive.

Forged beds in various styles of interior decoration

Shod beds can be of three types:

  • With headboard and foot. They, in turn, can be of the same height or different;
  • Only with the headboard;
  • With wrought iron canopy frame.

Of the materials, aluminum, cast iron, copper, steel and iron are preferred. Previously, such products, because of their high cost, could only be afforded by buyers from the wealthy strata of society. Now prices for wrought iron beds are also “biting”, but due to the lack of need for replacement for many decades, overpaying quickly turns into savings.

Many mistakenly believe that such a bed will bring gloom to the interior of the room. These associations did not arise from scratch. Forged beds used to be in styles with “heavy” luxury. They could be seen in historical films, where the decor of the bedrooms was decorated in dark colors, with an abundance of decorative elements. Such styles were classic for that time, but became far from the interior ideal of modern man. However, the range of wrought iron beds is represented by thousands of models, which are continued in most modern design areas. Such products are considered “native” for classics, Provence and Italian style.

Fusion, kitsch and eclecticism

For a typical interior in the style of kitsch, primitive wrought iron beds are used. The pattern on the sides will be simple and unpretentious without an abundance of thin ligature or complex elements. Often for kitsch, which is distinguished by a love of "low-grade" products, stampings, that is, elements of mass production, are acquired. Fusion is in many ways similar to eclecticism; in fact, these are just two extremes within a single style. The only difference is that eclecticism was created at the beginning of the last century on the ruins of the once popular baroque and rococo.

Simple bedroom decor

Fusion is one of the younger trends that use modern materials in design. Both styles are a mix. For this reason, wrought iron beds can be of various shapes and metal "weaving". The whole question is only in their combinations with other pieces of furniture, decor and decoration.For example, against a background of brick or stone walls of industrial, a classic bed with a complex ornament of curlicues will look highly original. In wooden houses made of timber with rough surfaces that will “shout” about the rustic style, fusion will place a berth of expensive materials with forging painted in extravagant colors. A room with a bed in a vintage style with a soft, delicate pattern, eclecticism can easily turn into a combination room. It will feature an American colonial decor and elements of baroque stucco.

Art Nouveau or Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau was able to synthesize natural materials, calm shades (ash gray, beige, black, pastel colors) and smooth, rounded lines. Wrought iron beds in the decoration of the bedroom will be her accent. The head and foot will adorn solid curved lines of different diameters in certain areas. They will resemble long stems of fantastic flowers, which with their interweaving create a bizarre, but naturally organic pattern.

Modern forging

By the way, forging in this style is used in all rooms: from the living room to the bathroom. The results of blacksmithing are found in decorative partitions, legs of tables, backs of chairs, window bars, chandeliers and wall sconces. Art Nouveau seeks to create in the atmosphere a feeling as if nature itself designed it. The abundance of flowers and wavy lines is embodied not only in the decoration, but also forged beds. They are decorated with complex, symmetrical elements (flowers and leaves), which are continued in ornate patterns on the walls and carved wood in furniture: designer cabinets, armchairs, cabinets. Forged ornament in art nouveau will certainly be the result of the fine work of the master.

Classicism

In classicism, forged products look organic and appropriate. In fact, the peak of their popularity coincided with the heyday of this style.It is characterized by an abundance of small details, elegant lines, patterns and ornament more reminiscent of lace of delicate work. A wrought iron bed can be chosen from samples of the late XIIX- early XIX century. It will be decorated with traditional for that time symmetrical patterns with curls. An elegant addition will be a canopy made of satin fabric, which is combined with curtains and bedspreads.

Country

In country, forged headboards are made with vertical “pins”, the top of which is connected by a modest ornament. The bed is covered with a blanket of Scottish tartan (checkered fabric), which emphasizes the "cowboy" negligence of the situation. On the sides of the sides of the bed are complemented by tall columns that rise above the composition. You can use standard models that used to be in all summer camps and resorts, but with the addition of small twisted elements. Country is much like a simple, rustic style, so it does not tolerate excessive pomp and luxury. For this direction, simple and functional furniture is chosen.

Shabby chic

Shebby-chic, in many ways similar to Provence, but uses furniture that mimics well-preserved antiques. And his closest “relative”, originally from the suburbs of Paris, prefers rude, aged elements. For shabby chic, beds that were used in a classic style are suitable. They are placed in a more colorful environment, but this combination does not spoil the overall picture. Forging is painted in delicate colors: white, pink, blue or peach. They are in harmony with colorful bedspreads, soft carpets on the floor and brightly furnished bedroom.

Loft

To design a room in the loft style, stone, brick, metal are used. High panel ceilings are decorated with an abundance of communication systems, which become the highlight of the interior, and not the result of its careless design. Wrought iron beds are rarely used in this slightly softened and “combed” industry.If they are nevertheless chosen for industrial luxury, then only simple forms, without frills. They should not play a key role in the interior, the decoration will successfully cope with this. A wrought iron bed will become just a functional detail, discreet and practical.

Shod beds for children

Furniture in a children's room should be not only comfortable, but also safe. Forged beds in the interior of this room are not used often, although the modern market offers a wide range of models with a special coating. It will not cause an allergy and is completely harmless to the child's body. In the nursery, they install both cribs with bumpers around the perimeter for the safety of the baby, and double options if there are two children. Some models ("attics") are specially designed for small rooms. They are multifunctional and allow you to install under the berth, which is located above, a computer desk for work, cabinets or chairs.

Color scheme forged bed design

In traditional versions, black, gray “steel” and bronze paints are used. The bed should match the color scheme of the room, and modern materials allow you to get any desired shade. In the delicate, romantic bedrooms of young girls with floral patterns in textiles and an abundance of small elements, apply:

  • Lilac;
  • Pink;
  • Emerald.

For bedrooms in strict styles, paints are used:

  • Gray
  • White
  • Brown (usually with a metal effect);
  • Blue;
  • Violet.

In flashy, experimental styles, the metal beds are painted in several colors at once.

Wrought iron bed and bedroom area

In small bedrooms with a deficit of sq.m. Do not use bulky furniture. This rule also applies to beds. In such rooms, they will occupy most of the room anyway, so the wrought-iron pattern should be chosen simple and the colors neutral.In the spacious bedrooms, wide beds are more reminiscent of luxurious beds. An additional installation of a canopy, the frame of which is also made of metal and supplemented with decorative elements, will be useful. Imitation of thin tree trunks with weaving leaves and branches or columns crowned with vines looks original.

How to combine a wrought iron bed in a bedroom design

A wrought-iron bed in the bedroom interior should be in harmony with the style of the room and not look like an alien element in it. First of all, textiles are selected for the product: blankets and pillows. In the choice, they are repelled from the design of forged elements. Floral ornament is combined with floral patterns and natural fabrics. More rigorous options with geometric compositions are combined with the same “fantastic” fabric pattern.

To complete the picture, the same master can order the manufacture of forged legs of a cabinet or armchairs, a frame for a mirror or a ceiling chandelier. The pattern on the sides of the bed can be repeated in the wooden elements of other furniture, curtains, wallpaper or decorative finishes.

Conclusion

Forging is a complex craft that combines technical work and the aesthetic taste of a craftsman. The result of the work of a professional is unique products. Metal gains incredible strength, and furnishings from it will successfully pass the centuries-old test of time. You can change the bedroom design dozens of times, but its design will be built around a “monumental” wrought iron bed. It can easily fit into almost any style and emphasize the owners' love for beautiful and elegant things.

I love needlework and everything connected with it. Especially home-made furnishings are my passion!
