DIY shoe rack

DIY shoe rack

As you know, the house begins with a hallway. This small and cramped room is the first to welcome the owners and guests, and it also creates a general impression of both the apartment itself and the character of its owners. The order for the hallway is of utmost importance. The key to a tidy environment will be a properly organized storage system. This primarily concerns shoes, which in large families can accumulate in the halls in "indecent" quantities. Special shelves, cabinets, and drawers are allotted for her. Some are included in the “hanger-dressing room” set, others are freestanding furniture items. We will talk about how to make a shoe rack with your own hands, what tools will be required for work and get acquainted with the principles of selecting the best materials.

Shelf for shoes - types and characteristics

The choice of the ideal shoe shelf is complicated by the rich assortment of these products in the furniture market. There are both modest, compact “bachelor” models, and massive storage systems designed for entire collections of shoes. There is no single classification for shoe shelves. They vary in height, width, depth, materials, methods of opening, the presence of additional compartments, holders, stands for other items. The so-called shoe boxes can be conditionally divided into several types:

  • Whatnots. They are small open shelves separated by horizontal shelves. The number of "floors" depends on the volume of shoes that will be stored on them. In common people they are called galoshes.
  • Banquets combined with shelves. The lower part of the furniture element is reserved for storing shoes, and the upper is designed as a seat. Such benches are compact options for cramped hallways.
  • Shoe tables. In fact, these are the same banquets, but on top of the storage system they fix not a seat, but a countertop. You can put a floral arrangement, a small sculpture, a clock and other decor on it.
  • Shelves and cabinets of closed type or slim models. Conventional horizontal boxes are considered impractical, therefore, in modern models, more and more special slim mechanisms have begun to be used, which rotate together with the door and bring the shelves to the “tilted” position. When closed, shoes are kept upright.

Depending on the location, the shelves can be floor and wall.Suspended models are very rare even in author's design projects.

Material selection

As the main material for the manufacture of the storage system, wood, its derivatives (MDF, chipboard), PVC pipes, metal, metal profiles and even thick cardboard and laminate are used. Also suitable for work are pallets - wooden pallets used in construction. In some models, materials are combined. For example, the frame of a bookcase (galoshnoshnitsa) can be made of metal tubes, and the crossbeams from wood or plywood.

Shelf Styles

Like any other piece of furniture, the shelf should match the chosen style of the room’s interior. For high-tech and loft, simple models of metal and pipes are suitable. This option will look especially colorful against the background of the "branded" brickwork in the hallway. For a group of rustic styles with Provence, open-top wooden shoe racks will do. The surface of the product is covered with discreet paint and artificially aged. This option will look great in combination with wicker drawers, baskets, which are placed on the upper tiers. For country, you can choose a model from boxes that are stacked on top of each other, and then fix the entire structure with glue. For minimalism, use the original options. For example, a product that can hardly be called a “shelf” in the literal sense of the word: a series of vertical poles on a stand. For each "put on" a boot. For classic styles use luxurious models of closed type with carvings on the doors. Elegant banquettes on twisted legs with a storage system located under the seat will also suit them.

Do-it-yourself workshops and unusual solutions for making shelves

Before work, you need to decide on two main nuances:

  • Shelf design.
  • Materials

The more complex the design of the product, the more skill and time it will take to create it.It is better for beginners to start with simple forms of whatnots or tables, cupboards, combined with shelves.

From chipboard

From chipboard, you can make an original, original model of a shoe shelf. Consider the process of manufacturing an unusual design-maze. To work, you will need:

    • Jigsaw.
    • Chipboard sheets.
    • Pins and special glue.
    • Screwdriver.
  • Grinder for slicing.
  • Tape measure and pencil.
  • Iron and hem tape.
  • Stationery knife for trimming excess tape.
  • Confirmates, screws, plugs.
  • The square.
  • Drill.

This design has an arbitrary number of shelves that form a system with different-sized “cells”. Particleboard must be cut into separate modules. They can be divided into two types:

  • Four parts for sidewalls, cover and lower pallet.
  • Modules of the same length from which elements in the form of the letter "P" will be formed.

The last parts in random order fill the inner space of the box. How exactly the shelves will be located depends only on the imagination of the master. Connect parts with each other using confirmations. Previously, with the help of a hot iron, an edge tape is glued to the slices.

From wood

Processed wooden boards can be purchased at any hardware store. All that remains for the master is the trimming and proper connection of the parts. To work, you need the following set of tools and materials:

  • Saw.
  • Roulette, pencil.
  • Self-tapping screws and a screwdriver.
  • Metal corners.
  • Boards themselves.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Varnish or paint.
  • Drill.

First you need to decide on the design of the future shoe rack. It is better to make a sketch on a piece of paper in advance. In the drawing, you immediately need to sign the length, width and depth of the shelf. Consider the process of creating a shoe case using the example of a simple open galosha:

  • On the boards mark the lines of future cuts. You will need to trim two side panels, the lower and upper part (cover), the transverse shelves directly under the shoes.
  • After that, you can start cutting boards using a saw. Jagged cuts are sanded with sandpaper.
  • Then the assembly begins. Shelves and a top / bottom cover are attached to the sidewalls using self-tapping screws, angles and a screwdriver. At the bonding points, holes with a slightly smaller diameter are pre-drilled than with self-tapping screws.
  • The surface of the shoe is varnished or painted.

After the composition has dried, the finished shelf can be put in the hallway or corridor and place shoes on it. Instead of classic sidewalls from boards, you can use bars, bricks or even glass bottles. For the last option in the shelves you will have to cut openings for the necks, on which they will be “worn”. The option with the use of bricks is suitable for the most lazy. Such a composition is not suitable for every style. It will look best in an industrial interior. First, “bricks” are formed of bricks stacked in two or three rows. After that, they fix the first shelf. Then comes the second side row of bricks and again the horizontal bar. The number of floors of such a rack is unlimited. Over time, you can even add new shelves to the design.

From metal

To make a simple metal shelf, you don’t need to punch in the forge at all. In modern interiors, laconic shelves made of thin tubes are very popular. Modules of different lengths are cut out of them, which are then fastened with fittings (tees, corners). The edges are clogged with plugs, and the structure itself is fixed to the wall. Pipes must be coated with a special anti-corrosion compound that will protect the material from the harmful effects of moisture. You can use a special paint with the effect of bronze, silver or gold. This shelf is ideal for interiors in the styles of steampunk, retro and loft. For minimalism, an even simpler design in the form of a "bare" frame is used.On its crossbars hooks are fixed, on which shoes will subsequently be hung.

From plywood

Working with plywood is much like making a shelf from chipboard. However, the material has several advantages in comparison with its main competitor:

  • Plywood has a better moisture resistance than chipboard. After getting wet, which often happens with “street” shoes, the material dries and does not deform. Particleboard can lose its shape.
  • For many aesthetes, plywood is more attractive in appearance than particleboard. It is often used in its raw form for finishing repairs.
  • Plywood has a higher abrasion resistance than chipboards, which begin to crumble over time.

Best of all are large, full-fledged shelves made of semi-closed type plywood (with a back), which are filled with numerous shelves of different sizes in random order.

From wooden slats

For the manufacture of shoes from wooden battens, the following tools will be required:

  • Sandpaper.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Self-tapping screws for wood.
  • Hacksaw.
  • Paint or varnish.

You can do with some rails or combine them with bars that will play the role of sidewalls. Consider the first option:

  • First, measurements are taken and a drawing of the future design is drawn.
  • After that, marks are made on the rails for cutting.
  • The material is cut into the desired number of modules. It will take four racks for the sidewall, paired supports for each shelf and the shelves themselves.
  • The modules are interconnected in accordance with the drawing. Work should start from the bottom shelf.
  • The structure is varnished or painted. If necessary, the saw cuts are pre-treated with sandpaper.

After the composition has dried, the shoe rack can be used for its intended purpose.

From laminate

From the laminate, you can quickly make a simple shelf. For work you will need only the main material and metal tubes. The number of laminate sheets depends on the size of the future shoe rack.In metal tubes using a grinder make slots. Then shelves are inserted into them. Plugs are fixed at the ends of the tubes to protect the holes from dirt and dust.

From a metal profile

The metal profile in the stylish home-made shoe rack is in harmony with the tempered glass from which the shelves are made. To work, you will need:

  • Screwdriver.
  • Drill.
  • Level, roulette.
  • Bulgarian.
  • Jigsaw.
  • Glass cutter for shelves.

Unusual wall-mounted shoe racks are obtained from the metal profile. First you need to take measurements, fix the guide on the wall with self-tapping screws and check how smooth it is with the level. After that, you can assemble the frame from a metal profile. Then, using a glass cutter, shelves are made. Tempered glass is inserted into special niches in the frame and the shoe is ready. This design perfectly emphasizes the coolness of hi-tech and the laconicism of a modern style.

Out of the boxes

This may seem surprising, but rather thick, wear-resistant furniture can be made of thick cardboard. The only drawback of this material is the lack of moisture protection, which cannot be compensated for by something. A structure of several modules is assembled, which are cut out of the boxes. Each part is made separately. A piece is cut from the box along with the bottom. The height of the module will be equal to the depth of the future shelf, as it will be located horizontally (that is, the bottom will “look” at the wall). Each part is glued with a second layer of cardboard to give extra strength. After all the modules are ready, they are interconnected, placing one above the other. It turns out a compact whatnot. Since the cardboard surface has a rather plain appearance, it is further glued with paper.

From wooden boxes and pallets

Shelves of pallets and boxes are considered, perhaps, the most concise and simple to manufacture. The construction can be built in just a few hours. The construction pallet is thoroughly sanded with sandpaper or a sanding machine. Then it is covered with a special water-repellent composition. After that, the pallet is brought into a vertical position and simply lean against the wall. Shoes put in between the transverse boards. To make a classic shelf, the pallet is cut into several parts, which are connected to each other in the manner of a whatnot, separated by bars. The structure of the boxes is assembled with glue. The material is also pre-sanded and coated with a special protective compound. After assembling the structure, it can be coated with paint. There is also a wall-mounted option for the “lazy." The boxes are painted in different colors, by the principle of analogy or contrast, and screwed to the wall, leaving spaces between the modules. The composition takes up exactly as much space as the master takes for it. Some boxes can be “broken” inside using shelves. In the future, they will be used for “low” shoes (boots, shoes). Others are decorated with vertical partitions. This option is suitable for compact storage of summer shoes (slates, flip flops, slippers). Those boxes that have remained untouched are used to place tall boots. This way of organizing looks bright, fun and slightly messy, which is why it suits exclusively light styles: fusion, eclecticism, ethnicity, a group of village trends.

PVC pipes

A shoe shelf made of PVC pipes is quite simple. To work, you will need the following tools:

  • Special knife for cutting plastic.
  • Glue.
  • Pipes.

The design will be in the shape of a honeycomb. Such a shelf is assembled according to the principle of the designer: it is convenient to add new modules to it and it is easy to give the most bizarre configuration. Pipes are cut into pieces of the same length so that the shoes fit. Then these models are interconnected by gluing them together. The finished structure can be coated with paint or pasted with any material at hand. Not even very clean shoes can be put in a PVC shelf, since the material, unlike wood and metal, is not afraid of moisture.

Round rotating pedestal

It is not as difficult to make a round rotating shoe rack as it might seem at first glance. To work, you need sheets of chipboard or plywood to choose the master. It is necessary to make several blanks:

  • Round for shelves.
  • In the form of rectangles for internal cross-supports, on which the entire structure will be held.

To accurately outline the circles on a sheet of material, you can use a special compass or use the old "old-fashioned" method with a thread that is fixed in the center of the future circle, and then the outline is drawn with a pencil attached to the other end. Uneven saw cuts need to be sanded with sandpaper or using a grinding machine. After that, they are decorated with an edge tape, which is glued using a hot iron. Then the rectangular elements are interconnected, forming crosses. The number of these parts depends on how many gaps between the shelves will be, that is, on the number of storeys of the shoe. Every two adjacent circles are connected using crosses. Work begins from the lower tier. In conclusion, a special rotating stand mechanism is attached to the bottom.

Shoebox pouf / bench

In fact, this is an ordinary shoe rack, which is not covered on top with an ordinary lid, but with a tabletop or seat. You can assemble a shelf from an array of wood or chipboard, sometimes using bars. If the shoe rack will be used as a bench for re-shoes, then the design must be additionally strengthened to increase the margin of safety. Instead of assembling a new shelf, you can use an old chest. It is sanded, covered with a layer of varnish, paint or pasted over with paper. The storage system is formed from sheets of plywood, making a "lattice".Its width should be equal to the height of the chest, since it should be placed upside down. Shoes are put vertically in it. On top of the chest cover is covered with soft pillows or a special seat for ease of use.

DIY corner stand

For the manufacture of corner pedestals, it is better to use plywood, particleboard or wood. The shelf will have backs, from the connection of which work on the assembly of the structure will begin. It is also necessary to cut two identical parts for the pallet and cover. Concave areas are better to smooth and make semicircular. You will have to tinker with trimming, but the result is worth it. Soft, wavy lines are suitable not only for the modern style, but also organically flow into any modern or classic direction. The lid and the pallet are connected to the sidewalls, after which they begin to work with filling the shelves.

Conclusion

The shoe rack can even be made from an old stepladder. It is fixed in the working position, after which boards are laid on the steps, which serve as shelves. Some craftsmen go further and cut the stepladder, then screw it to the wall. Then they act according to a similar algorithm and fix the cross bars instead of shelves. If a lonely girl lives in the apartment who loves to wear high-heeled shoes, then a laconic wall-mounted storage system consisting of stripes of baguette is suitable for her. They are fixed on the wall surface, placing the "shelves" parallel to each other. Shoes cling to them for heels. Instead of pieces of baguette, you can use a curtain rod or towel holder and two hooks.
