Do-it-yourself eyelets installation

Eyelets on the fabric

Eyelets - rings of two elements for fixing between them parts of the canvas. Today it is a universal device used in many fields. The ring holds its shape perfectly, therefore it adds strength to the mount. For the textile industry, eyelets have become indispensable elements. Clothing designers have repeatedly used the structure of pads to emphasize the beauty of the product. Due to the multidisciplinary use, eyelets have acquired all kinds of proportions. In some cases, a flat foot is required, and sometimes a high one. The width of the product is also very different: it is designed for both thick ropes and thin laces. The industry uses linings of increased strength from modified materials. Eyelets differ in shape, although the classic ring-shaped remains the most widely used. In some cases, the installation of eyelets is done by hand.Public workshops will help in this.

Eyelets: the story of the appearance

The probable time of the appearance of the eyelets remains undetermined. It is known that this happened a very long time ago, perhaps during the time of Ancient Greece. Scientists know neither the language in which the word appeared, nor even the inventor of this device. The appearance of the eyelet is associated with the use of wind power, and the term itself refers to a hole in the sail for threading fixing threads. In ancient times, the rigging of the ship was formed in this way. Nowadays, the term has expanded its meaning. Now this is a variant of hardening the edges of the holes, less durable than the cable passing through them.

The cringle is often used as a decorative fixture, and not as a means to strengthen the material. As an example, lining in leather products, fiberboard, foam board. Modern grommet - a mechanism of washer and shaped sleeve. In this case, metal or plastic is used mainly as a material.

Application area

The item is widely used in the manufacture of clothing, shoes and accessories. Laces for tying shoes, tongues of belts, and laces for bags are threaded through it. Another area of application is parachuting, here the reliability of fastening plays a very important role. Awning fixing cables are also threaded into the grommets. This use case can be seen on tourist tents, tents, large trucks. The device is also known to side-makers who are familiar with the arrangement of street advertising: banners with large format printing, banners, etc.

The grommets did not bypass the office where sheets of paper were sealed with the help of these parts. Also, heavy draped curtains are hung on these holes. At the same time, the product is still relevant for sailing ships, but now it is either private yachts or sports vessels. The device is also called a block, which is not entirely correct, because the design just consists of a ring and a sleeve, which is also called a block.

Eyelets application

The eyelet sleeve is also called a leg and a block, the washer - a ring, sometimes a hat.

Advantages and disadvantages of use

It is a functional fixture with obvious benefits. Firstly, they facilitate the process of dressing, removing, attaching. Eyelets also diversify and decorate the design, especially since models of different shapes have appeared. However, the round structure is best resistant to deformation. The cringle is easy to use, so that any kind of work can be carried out quickly and without complications. This is a very useful and cheap item with a wide distribution, moreover, it is easy to manufacture. Among the shortcomings, damage to the material that is hardening is primarily manifested. A sloppy or sharp movement behind the lace, and the grommet can fly out, at the same time violating the integrity of the fabric. If we talk about the use of curtains and tulles - metal parts are very noisy. The loop fastening method is more convenient in this regard. A common problem is color deterioration, but much depends on the particular material.

Types and materials

Pads come in a standard round shape, square and in the form of various shapes. Manufacturers also produce polygon eyelets and animal figures. The variety depends on the overall design intent and purpose for a particular application. If the eyelets of the desired shape were not found, a separate special order will be needed. According to the execution material, metal, plastic and wooden plates are distinguished.In the field of fashion, they often use the plastic version. They are easier to attach and cheaper. Metal parts are more reliable, but emit more noise. If a metal bar is inserted through the holes, then it will be scratched and worn out. However, for large objects such as tents, it is better to use metal options. Wooden linings are useful for a certain interior, for example, at the same time as using aged furniture.

Self-installation without special tools

In the process you will need:

  1. Determine the required distances on the braid under the eyelets.
  2. Prepare the tape.
  3. Install the grommet parts.

To perform independent fastening, it is enough to have a ruler, a hammer and some kind of pricking device, for example, a hole punch, on hand. First, distances are calculated. There are recommendations regarding the intervals between the upper edge and the center of the eyelet, between the plates themselves, as well as about the optimal diameter. The grommets are in any case located at the same height. The next thing the tape is cut, folded with the wrong edges inward and ironed. The tape should cool before attaching to the base material. Extra fragments are also removed. In the future, glue and iron will be needed. Installation of the grommets themselves begins with marking. Moreover, it is advisable to pre-train on some material. Next is the precise and meticulous process of fixing the lining in the hole. To normalize the fastening you will need a hammer.

Calculation of the distance between the grommets

Self-calculation is usually needed at home to determine the installation location on the curtains. A miscalculation will cost corrupted property. To begin with, you should determine the possible number of holes. In any case, we are talking about an even amount so that the edges of the curtains look in one direction. Then, when hanging, you will need to choose the direction to the window.The same distance is left between each grommet - for curtains you can 17 cm. It is a question of the distance between the centers of the holes. The minimum is 15, and the maximum is 22 cm. The minimum acceptable interval to the edge of the curtain is between the 5th and 7th centimeters. If you ignore this rule, then there is a high probability that the pad does not fasten. For processing should be laid 12 cm from the top, 5 cm of bottom hem and 2 cm at the sides, as well as the inner and outer diameter of the holes at the level of 35 and 55 mm

Distance between eyelets

As a result, it is necessary to calculate:

  1. Eyelet diameter.
  2. Interval between eyelets.
  3. The distance from the edge pads to the edge of the fabric.

Using a grommet tape

Reinforcing tapes are single and double layer. They differ in the number of glued sides. To select the ideal width, a minimum of 2 cm is added to the outer diameter. In this case, transparent ribbons are chosen for thin curtains. The tape needs to be ironed at a minimum heating temperature. Next, glue it in short sections with a delay of 8-12 seconds. The tight fit of the grommet to the fabric is ensured by light pressure. During the fastening process, it is not necessary to touch the material, otherwise the braid will lie obliquely. Theoretically, the sealing tape can be attached with small needles. As for washing curtains with eyelets, you should choose a delicate mode at a water temperature of about 20 ° C. Turning on the spin is not recommended, because it will adversely affect the tape. If the pads are made of plastic, you will have to refrain from using chemical cleaners.

Installation technique

First, mark the places on paper or on the fabric itself. Before piercing the holes, make sure that the holes on the pads and the hole punch converge. In any case, the diameter of the latter must be inferior to the grommets so that they do not later fall out. Small holes, in turn, are made with an awl or clerical knife. In any case, the place under the holes is treated with glue even before punching.When the hole is ready, carefully insert the grommet into it, with a hat on the front side. To prevent damage to the substrate, we put a metal ruler or sheet of iron. Next, we install paper with a grommet on the substrate, so that the legs look up. Then we hold a flattening tool into the leg with previously opened or notched edges. In the end, beat with a hammer on the instrument, which is inserted into the leg - the grommet is fixed.

Installation of eyelets

Installation using specialized tools

It will require forceps and a press. In addition, there is a set of punches in the building goods store - this will partially solve the problem of creating large holes. If the grommets are needed to support heavy curtains, the openings are made as wide as possible. Lining sizes and hole diameters are marked. For example, the sleeve length of the grommet element directly depends on the thickness of the processed material. If we are talking about weighty textured draperies, a grommet with the largest leg will be required. The size of the lining on the marking is indicated by the letter L, and the diameter of the sleeve and, correspondingly, the holes are indicated by the letter D. The smallest eyelets are fixed with balls or rounded steel rods. The ends of the rods can be machined on a lathe. Metal axes with a conical end and a diameter exceeding the lining index are also suitable.

List of potentially necessary tools and devices:

  • balls from bearings;
  • rods;
  • forceps;
  • rubber mat;
  • stationery knife;
  • marker;
  • iron sheet;
  • ruler;
  • hammer.

Tips for installing eyelets on a tarp

For awnings, lining is selected from a high-strength plasticized mixture. The surface of the parts must be nickel or galvanized. In this case, the installation can be carried out on professional equipment. The unit for welding two parts of the lining is best suited for these purposes. The machine guarantees fast and high-quality soldering.For installation on a tarpaulin awning, flaring and a punch are used. A separate roll is provided for each version of the eyelet. But besides them, you can use a compact hand press. In this case, the need for shock force disappears, and the usual squeezing is enough. In addition, nozzles and tips for the type and size of eyelets are included with the press. The implementation of this installation method does not require physical strength and skills. The above methods of fixing can be used when installing street advertising banners.

Eyelets on a tarp

How to prepare a tarp

First, select the awning of the desired thickness and size. Next, we prepare the tools: a hammer, a punch, a marker, a pencil, a ruler - devices necessary for punching holes. Using a ruler and a pencil, we determine and immediately mark the places where subsequently we will install the grommets. The size of the marks should be equal to the diameter of the ring. We apply everything evenly, making sure that the distances between adjacent elements correspond to the same value. After that, we take a hammer with a punch and begin to form openings in the tarpaulin according to the drawn marks. You should immediately determine the distance from the edges, as well as the height of the linings, so as not to cut extra holes. Before breaking through, fold the awning in half, for the sake of greater reliability of the future fastening. Before creating the openings, we place a wooden board under the tarp to absorb the impact of the hammer on the punch.

Canvas with grommets

If the material is thin, it is better to use brass or plastic washers.

Conclusion

Eyelets appeared a very long time ago, and over many centuries the principle of their use has not changed much. However, now linings can be found not only on sailing ships, but also on tarpaulins, outdoor advertising, packages and even on clothes, shoes and other haberdashery products. Despite widespread use, eyelets have a significant drawback. Any cloth trimmed with overlays has a tendency to tear at the junction.One inaccurate movement is enough, and the product will be damaged. Moreover, the repair of such damage is a very difficult task. Nevertheless, everyone can independently calculate and produce a grommet tape for curtains right at home. Finding tools and materials will not be difficult. It is only necessary to connect the strip, select the parts of the correct form, make holes for them and, in fact, fix them. Detailed step-by-step instructions will help you achieve perfect results.
