Techniques for decorative painting walls

Decorative painting of walls

Original decorative painting of walls can quickly transform any room - residential or non-residential. A huge variety of dyes, textures, color combinations, application methods will allow you to design an apartment, private house, office in accordance with your own ideas about beauty, and the costs will be relatively small.

The advantages of decorative paints

Dyes - the finishing material intended for wall decoration, have many positive qualities:

  • they retain a good appearance for a relatively long time - many times more than simple plaster, wallpaper;
  • in stores, on construction markets there is a huge selection of colors, effects;
  • on the plane that is painted, there are no joints - it is covered with a uniform layer of pigment;
  • due to its high water resistance, the material is suitable for kitchen walls, a bathroom;
  • the use of an aqueous emulsion composition creates an environmentally friendly coating that does not cause allergies, does not emit toxins, which is important when decorating a nursery;
  • if the room wants to be repainted, the previous layer is not necessary to be removed;
  • painting compounds perfectly fit on drywall, plaster, concrete, wooden, walls of OSB boards.

The main thing that is required from the decorative coating of the walls is the uniformity of its application.

Types of decorative paints

Decorative dye contains various additives, has a thicker consistency than usual, creates a very unusual design, and the appearance of the coating depends on the thickness of the coating. Such compositions are divided into two main types: for external and internal works. By the form of the film-forming component, four groups are distinguished: acrylic, water-based, latex, alkyd. They can be painted not only walls, but also the ceiling, doors, individual elements of the decor.

Types of paints

If the experience of painting is absent or minimal, you should not undertake the implementation of complex patterns, starting with the simplest.

Acrylic

This type is the most popular, refers to water-dispersion, invented in the mid-twentieth century. The composition contains acrylic resin, which creates a coating of high strength, elasticity, polymer emulsion, pigment. The coloring matter retains color for a long time, but for rooms where there is high humidity, such material is not used.It is easy to apply, dries in about thirty or forty minutes. Certain varieties are used for the artistic painting of the walls of any rooms, building facades, and are sold both in cans of 0.5-4.5 kg., And in the form of aerosols in cans.

Latex

Latex dyes are created on a water-dispersion basis, incorporate rubber, which forms an elastic, very durable film coating, resistant to sunlight and water. There is no harmful "chemistry" in them, because the material is suitable even for a children's bedroom, any interior, not having sudden changes in temperature, strong drafts. Available in three types: glossy, matte, semi-matte.
The dye is easily applied to any base - the film is very elastic, it beautifully repeats the surface relief. The coating is vapor permeable, durable, inexpensive. It should be applied only on a perfectly flat surface.

Glossy leaves on matte paint.

Before painting, it is advisable to treat the surface with antifungal agents.

Water emulsion

Refers to water-dispersion, contains pigments, polymers, water. The coating is moisture resistant - when water enters such a wall, it evaporates, but does not penetrate inside. The composition is completely non-toxic, fireproof, lays well on any surface except varnished and adhesive, practically odorless, not suitable for covering walls in wet rooms, overly smooth surfaces. Easy to apply with a brush, roller, spray gun, drying time depends on humidity, room temperature - an average of 3-24 hours.

Alkyd, oil

They are used to protect surfaces in rooms where high temperatures, high humidity are present. The composition contains alkyd resins that increase the life of the coating. The saturated color persists for a long time, but when applied, it dries, the paint smells strongly and unpleasantly.Since alkyd resins can harm human health, these compounds are used exclusively for exterior decoration or in non-residential, well-ventilated spaces.

Oily has a composition of drying oil, pigment, fillers. As pigments use:

  • soot;
  • graphite powder;
  • white (zinc, lead, titanium);
  • iron salts;
  • oxides of lead, cobalt, etc.

For painting walls outside

Oil formulations are applied in a thin, even layer, avoiding sagging that spoils the appearance. Excessively thick layer dries for a long time, looks worse.

Silicone

The composition contains organic elements, resin, in some cases - acrylic copolymers, but there are practically no "aggressive" components that are harmful to health. The uniqueness of these materials is that they have an oxygen-containing resin, the structure of which is close to quartz particles.

The paint is durable, moisture resistant, heat-resistant, conveniently applied with a spray or brush, suitable for internal, external work, there is a huge variety of colors. It is not suitable for concrete surfaces, consumed heavily on wooden, and is relatively expensive. Two groups are distinguished - protective emulsions and primers.

Silicone paint

It is recommended to apply silicone compounds only at positive temperatures.

Silicate compounds

Are created on the basis of "liquid glass" with ethyl silicate, polymers. Suitable for finishing facades, any interior. The material is very strong, often zinc and aluminum pigments are added to it, which give the coating anti-corrosion properties. For greater density, the composition includes chalk, mica, talc, etc.

These compounds are used for all kinds of surfaces - cement, limestone, plastered, brick. Completely unsuitable for all types of plastic, natural wood, some types of artificial stone. There are two varieties - silicone-silicate and silicate-dispersion.

Silicate compounds

Experts recommend the use of such paints where there is a high probability of damage by fungi, mold.

How to prepare walls for painting

When a wall is painted for the first time, its surface needs to be prepared in stages for such a design. What exactly do:

  • remove the old finish;
  • ground the plane;
  • cover up various flaws;
  • putty, grind irregularities;
  • primed again;
  • wait until the putty is completely dry.

At the end of the preparatory work, the wall is completely ready for decorative painting.

Putty walls

Cramped rooms with an area of three to six square meters, without windows (such as an entrance hall, a bathroom) should not be painted in excessively cold, dark colors. It is also advisable to refuse large bright drawings - such a room will look very small.

Necessary materials, tools

To paint the walls of the room will require approximately the following set of tools:

  • rollers;
  • sponges;
  • tray;
  • spatulas - steel, plastic, rubber, gear;
  • hard brushes;
  • sandpaper;
  • stencils - if you need to depict a clear ornament;
  • a mixer or a special nozzle on a drill - for stirring;
  • masking tape - to protect places that are not planned to be painted.

Wall painting tools

Before starting work, you should consider exactly what effect you plan to get, so as not to buy a bunch of extra tools.

Application Methods

Professional decorative paints have a high cost, therefore, cheaper analogues are often used, which, when used properly, create an equally beautiful decor. There are many examples of coloring - these are “star dust” and “wrinkled skin”, “silk effect” and “pearlescent effect”, “ombre” and the effect of an unpainted surface, Venetian plaster and stippling, the use of stencils and special insulating tape.

Ombre in the form of mountainsPainting walls in two colors A combination of turquoise and lemon Painting with masking tape Using stencils Waves on the wall in the bedroom

It is not advisable to use more than two or three contrasting colors in one room - this greatly overloads the interior,especially in small rooms.

Using stencils

A stencil is an original way to quickly transform any room, as well as:

  • visually change the shape of the room;
  • “Refresh” the interior;
  • organize a niche;
  • “Hide” the doorway;
  • mask the flaws of the painted plane.

Using a stencil

If you use a home-made stencil with an image repeating on textiles, the design of the room will find completeness, and it is not necessary to be an artist for this.
Stencils are distinguished by methods of applying paints:

  • monochromatic - one dye is used;
  • multicolor - two or more colors are used;
  • voluminous - a peculiar bas-relief is formed on the wall, two or three mm high .;
  • reverse - fill the space around the picture.

There are disposable and reusable options. The stencil is made by hand or ordered from specialists with any desired pattern. The most popular are floral, floral motifs, stylized animal figures, regular geometric shapes, plot abstractions, monograms and meanders.

Using stencils

Paint is applied through a stencil using brushes, a roller, a foam swab, and a spray gun.

Star dust effect

This option is used both for walls and for ceilings. If you use gold, silver paint on a dark background, the design will come out the most refined.
How it's done:

  • the wall is painted in the desired color or several at once;
  • brush dipped in paint, slightly squeezed;
  • after it is bent in the opposite direction so that the dye splashes get on the plane to be painted - here, two to three or more different colors are also allowed.

Star dust effect

For work it is better to use a hard brush.

Stippling - the effect of aging

With this method of decoration, the wall looks as if "battered", shabby, very old, for this it:

  • painted in the desired color;
  • an acrylic layer is applied on top to get a contrast;
  • coated with colored glaze, combined with a painted wall;
  • smooth the icing on the wall as evenly as possible with a flat brush;
  • with a round brush, they randomly touch different places, which gives the surface the effect of antiquity.

The method has a minus: in the presence of multiple bulges, "pits", they all become visible to the naked eye.

Effect of aging

The design is very suitable for loft, art believe.

Skin effect

The result of painting looks as if the walls of the room are covered with leather, which looks very solid in the office, cabinet, various expensive interiors - baroque, empire, classic.
Finishing is as follows:

  • the surface is pre-prepared;
  • the walls are covered with paint, which contains latex;
  • the glaze is mixed with latex paint, but the tone is selected slightly darker than the main one;
  • the above mixture covers a small section of the wall, squeezed with a brush made of suede, previously moistened in water, with light touches is carried out on a still wet surface, creating smooth decorative stains, sometimes removing excess;
  • when there are lines that are very noticeable, they are blotted with wet suede, cut into pieces, creating a semblance of a surface covered with leather.

Skin effect

Wrinkled skin effect

Beautiful coverage is done step by step, it takes some time:

  • you will need pearl glaze, acrylic primer, vinyl dye in two shades;
  • a paper square is taken from a decorative material, a fragment of the wall is smeared under its size;
  • the leaf is wrinkled, applied to the plane, after which it is necessary to smooth it out, make a “crumpled” coating;
  • with similar pieces to process the entire wall completely.

Wrinkled skin effect

Venetian stucco effect

This option is one of the most decorative. It is used in art deco interiors, classic, gothic and others. To create a "Venetian" do the following:

  • latex paint is poured into a wide bowl;
  • a pigment for paints is sprinkled from one edge, gently stirring with a stick - the dark and light parts come out;
  • a lighter dye is taken with a spatula, applied as plaster;
  • after applying a dark composition, part of the wall is covered;
  • when dark and light fragments are obtained, they are gently smeared with a spatula on the surface from side to side to make it beautiful;
  • at the end, the plane is ground with fine sandpaper, rubbed with wax.

Venetian plaster

In order for everything to work out correctly, it is advisable to use exclusively spatulas made of plastic.

Rag Roller Painting

To paint the wall, ordinary textile rollers are often used - they create an original design that is very suitable for children's rooms. Such a roller has convex patterns on the surface. The wall does not look perfect, but its existing flaws become invisible. How it's done:

  • apply the first layer of dye, wait until it dries;
  • breed another shade of the main color, but darker by two or three tones;
  • the fabric is soaked in paint, twisted until a tourniquet is formed, and a roller is wrapped;
  • painting is carried out from top to bottom in different directions to get a texture pattern.

It is advisable to use a textured coloring composition - it looks much better than usual.

Contrast staining with masking tape

Stripes - a simple but original version of the decoration, giving the room dynamism. With their help, various effects are achieved that change the shape of the space - vertical lines visually make the room taller, horizontal lines expand the room, diagonal ones look very original. The adhesive tape is pasted in the right direction, painted “empty” places, wait for the paint to dry, peel off the tape - get a “striped” wall.

Zigzag or chevronFor the image, the wall will have to be pre-marked, stick pieces of adhesive tape along the marking, then painted.The design looks very original, suitable for various interiors.
Herringbone patternVertical floor-to-ceiling lines intersect with oblique lines arranged in the form of “Christmas trees” and “inverted Christmas trees”. This location is perfect for children, hallways, kitchens.
"Spider Web"A very fashionable pattern today. Masking tape is glued arbitrarily, with inclined, intersecting lines from the ceiling to the floor. The pattern leaves asymmetric.
"Geometry"This design is also “in trend” over the past few years. It looks like a cobweb with its asymmetry, but the emphasis is not on external lines, but inside. The figures are separated from each other by strips or are performed completely without a fringing.
Partial paintingHere a third or two-thirds of the wall is painted, and sometimes a wide contrast strip is made in the middle. If you want to mask the door, it is painted in the same way - this design will suit the style of minimalism, hi-tech.
Zone AllocationThe color stands out for a working corner, a dining room, a game, a sleeping area, which is very convenient to use in studio apartments. It can be a bright rectangle or a figure framed by straight lines.

Conclusion

Decorative paint creates a finish, helping to get almost any desired texture. The original version of wall painting is easy to do with your own hands, but when it comes to decorating large spaces, you need a skilled assistant or even a whole team of professional painters who can quickly and efficiently cope with the task.

I love needlework and everything connected with it. Especially home-made furnishings are my passion!
