Quilling or paperwork for beginners

Quilling for beginners

Quilling is the art of hand-made from narrow paper stripes of beautiful crafts, even real masterpieces. This ancient art can become a great hobby for almost the whole family. Quilling for beginners is often taught in labor lessons in elementary school, so that children develop various skills, master paper skills. It is quite easy to learn quilling on your own, having studied the master classes given step-by-step on the Internet on the pages of printed publications on hand-made.

History of quilling

The term “quilling” comes from the English “quil” - “bird feather”, since in the 14-15th century the medieval monks and nuns who were engaged in it wrapped thin gilded paper on the tips of the feathers, creating medallions, framing the icons. The finished design seemed completely made of gold, although it was not.

Quilling

A little later, in the 18th century, the art of paper-rolling spread to all European countries, but only in the most materially well-off sections of society, because high-quality, color, paper suitable for making crafts was an expensive pleasure. Princess Elizabeth also became interested in quilling, which immediately became a popular hobby among the female population. By the beginning of the 20th century, the art of paper filigree was almost forgotten for a while, so that in the 21st it could be reborn again.

Maple Leaf

Those who have never encountered quilling, it seems that everything that is made of paper, even the most dense, will be fragile, literally “disposable”. This is not at all like this: on a pedestal made using the paper-rolling technique, you can put a tea pair, put a couple of books and it does not even get deformed. Quilling vase for pencils, sweets, sewing accessories has been used for its intended purpose for a long time, without becoming unusable.

Girl

In modern time, there are two main quilling schools: European and South Korean. The eastern direction is replete with many intricate details, difficult elements, representing jewelry masterpieces from a huge number of parts, leisurely created by weeks or months. Western simpler, more rigorous, concise, is much faster, as in Europe it is always customary to rush.It is the latter option that is best suited for those who are just starting to get acquainted with paper plastics.

About paper

Paper strips are the main material for work. They are cut from not the thinnest, preferably colored on both sides, paper. Width ranges from one to two mm., To one and a half to two cm., The most commonly used - four to seven mm. They are cut manually with sharp scissors or bought in handicraft stores immediately with whole sets. The most commonly used material is Korean-made, sold through online stores.

The most important properties of quilling paper:

  • color - plain, with gradient overflows, small pattern, gold, silver tint, etc .;
  • width - in purchase sets there are stripes of 1-15 mm, less often wider ones intended for leaves;
  • density - the most convenient paper with a density of 120-140 gr. per square meter. If the density indicator is less, the product will turn out to be easily deformable, more - the paper will delaminate at the first attempt to curl;
  • the length of the strips - depends on what size the workpiece is planned to be done. The most convenient options are about 30 cm long, but in some cases longer ones are required - 50-60 cm;
  • price - the cheapest way is to buy plain colored paper and cut it yourself, but not everyone can make even strips, so it’s better to use purchased sets, the cost of which depends on the quantity, width of strips, colors offered, manufacturer fame.

You will also need a paper, any other basis - everything that is twisted from strips will later be glued to a dense base, selected depending on the purpose of the product that is planned to be made. It can be not just an even sheet, but a box, a casket, a can.
Tip: in specialized stores they get ready-made kits for paper rolling, including not only strips, but also all the tools necessary for work.

Instruments

A tool such as a torsion stick is the main one. You can do it yourself by cutting off the tip of a toothpick, a ballpoint pen (but not a gel) pen, a cotton swab, splitting the base in the middle or buying a special metal awl with a fork at the end in a specialized store.

Glue is also necessary - for different purposes you will need glue stick or PVA. Scissors will be required small, but very sharp, with thin tips, they, among other things, cut a fringe. The tweezers are suitable for medical, cosmetic, used to work with radio components, etc. It is not necessary to have it, but when handling small parts, the tweezers greatly facilitate the work.

A special stencil-ruler with circles, ovals, hearts, droplets of different diameters is also useful, especially if it has at least two elements of the same size. To create large-scale compositions, you will need safety pins with multi-colored heads. The cork or foam mat will allow the finished elements not to stick to the table, as they can be fixed on it with pins. Crimp - a tool for corrugating paper, which is needed when creating bulk work.

A comb with long teeth is perfect for looped paper rolling. If it is decided to cut the strips yourself, then you will need a breadboard knife, a ruler, a special rug in the cage for cutting. All kinds of decor is used as additional elements - colored threads, yarn, ribbons,wire, rhinestones, plastic eyes, nose, etc.

For fringe cutting, a special tool is sometimes used that simultaneously cuts and advances the quilling strip.

Types of Quilling

Technically, all types of paper rolling are divided into:

  • contour or graphic - in this technique, paper strips are glued along a pre-drawn contour, a cut silhouette. It can be letters, geometric shapes, etc .;
  • voluminous - it is mainly used for corrugated paper, corrugated cardboard. Products come out three-dimensional, usually these are vases, stands for napkins, toys, etc .;
  • the hasting or looped technique allows you to create more elegant, but very fragile products. This will not be possible for a beginner, as it will require certain skills and enormous patience;
  • a bihive or “bee hive” allows you to create large and small spaces using not whole strips, but their small segments.

Workshops for beginners

Beginning girls, boys, adults are recommended to use high-quality paper, tools for paper crafts - so they will quickly learn this art, having mastered its basics. Children will be most interested in making something that is understandable to them - figures of animals, birds, fish, doll furniture, Christmas decorations, a card for mom or dad.

The main base figure is a spiral. To create such a tight roll, a quilling strip is wound tightly on a stick, and then fixed with glue. A free spiral is also wound on a stick, but after that it is possible to slightly unwind, after which it is manually shaped into a suitable shape and glued to the right place.

Quilling flowers

In the quilling technique, it is easy to make almost any kind of flowers - dandelions, daisies, gerberas, roses, tulips, sunflowers and many others. To make the simplest flower, you will need a square of colored paper with a side of 12-15 cm. Inside the square, starting from the center, a pencil is drawn with a pencil, which is wound on a stick, fixed with glue. It turned out something like a rose.

More complex flowers are formed from several strips twisted into rolls using stencils with circles. On one edge of the strips, a shallow fringe should be cut. For the middle of the flower, a pink, red or yellow strip is taken, one by 30 cm in size, for the bud - light green, one by 10 cm. First, the middle is tightly twisted, fixed with a drop of glue, then the strip forming the bud is fixed on top. Fringes should be carefully “fluffed”.

New Year’s snowflakes are performed in stages as follows:

  • twisted seven "loose" rolls, the tips of which are fixed. One will become the core, the rest - “rays” of snowflakes. Rays must first manually shape droplets;
  • then six more rolls are performed, which are flattened in the form of an eye. They are glued between the details of the previous row;
  • then six spirals in the shape of hearts are made, which are recessed and glued to the “rays” of the previous row;
  • a thin thread is threaded into the finished product - it can be hung on a Christmas tree.

We create unusual jewelry

To make earrings, you will need two special metal billet-earrings, which will cling to the ears, two flat rhinestones-pearls. To make a pentagonal design, ten rolls are twisted for each earring, which are flattened, in the form of an eye, glued in pairs. Each pair is framed by a separate contrasting strip, all five parts are assembled into an “asterisk”, decorated with a common frame, a pearl is glued to the center, a metal blank is attached to the upper part. Approximately the same design, only of a larger size, is used as a neck pendant, a keyring.

The necklace is made of simple circles fastened together with the help of small links of metal. More original will come out if you take the yellow and orange paper, twist the yellow rolls, flatten them in the form of orange slices, surround the parts with a few orange paper, fasten with iron brackets, attach a special clasp.

Easter decoration

One of the main symbols of Easter is the egg. For its implementation, you will need an empty chicken shell or packaging from a kinder surprise. Next, many small rolls are twisted, with which the surface of the egg is tightly pasted. A volumetric flower made of fringed strips is placed on one side. For an Easter panel, a contour of a chicken and several eggs is drawn on a sheet of cardboard, then the figures are filled with rolls, customized in shape. The chicken has legs of a spiral bent in the form of a three-fingered paw, an acute-angled wing, a forked beak, a flat doll eye. At the bottom of the picture are placed curls in the form of green grass or yellow-beige hay.

Stylish design of candlesticks

To make the original water lily candle holder, a metal base is taken, which will protect the paper from fire when the candle is lit. Next, large spirals with a contrasting edging are twisted, in total 20-30 pieces are made,depending on the size of the structure, a droplet is formed from each. After that, exactly half of the rolls-drops are taken, with the wide side glued to the bottom of the candlestick - flush with its bottom. The second layer of rolls is attached a little higher, but at an angle of about 70 degrees relative to the bottom row. The finished product is decorated with pearls, transparent beads, symbolizing water droplets.

To make the water lily more realistic, several plausible leaflets are cut out of green paper.

We make photo frames, watches, mirrors

The original photo frame is made on a rectangular, oval, round, other suitable cardboard base, which is pre-painted. Then the space is filled with round rolls of various sizes, randomly arranged spirals, triangles, eyes, droplets.

It is preferable to arrange the clock symmetrically, for this the base is cut out, five to nine cm more than the clock on each side. The space is filled with rolls in the shape of hearts, crescents, pre-made flowers. Quilling flowers, butterflies, curls are also glued to the surface of a large mirror, usually in one or two of its corners - a product so designed will resemble a window with frosty patterns.

Other crafts made of twisted stripes

The napkin holder is made of two vertical walls and a bottom. For the sidewalls, two flowers are made of flattened rolls, with several leaves on both sides. Contrasting in two layers is necessary so that the design is durable. The bottom is collected from about ten large rolls with a fringing, glued between the walls. The finished product is varnished. If a napkin holder is made for a children's room, its sides are made in the form of nested dolls - each consists of two large rolls with eyes and handles, there will be smaller curls or nesting dolls around.

The vase is easiest to make using the base around which the product will be formed. At first, a sufficient number of elements of various shapes are formed, after which they stick together with each other, framing the base. From green paper you get a vase-leaf, from brown rolls - a vase in the form of a stump. More complex products are made from many voluminous corrugated parts, assembling like a puzzle.

Vase quilling

The box consists of a box in which you can put something and a lid, which is made a little more so that the product can be closed freely. From simple round spirals, the bottom is made, from any curly - walls. The lid is made simple at first, and decorated on top, for example, in the form of a cake - green kiwi slices, orange tangerines, red raspberries, purple grapes.

In the quilling technique, it is easy to decorate ready-made boxes for various trifles - both matchboxes, shoes, glass, plastic figured bottles, and tin cans.

Casket

Conclusion

Simple and complex applications, caskets, paintings, quilling toys, made by yourself, can become a unique gift, decorate the interior of different styles in an original way - both everyday and festive. Since paper is a very easy to process material, products from it, with certain skills, can be made even by a child, with the participation of a little help from adults.
