Design of a living-dining room

Small kitchens become the main reason for making the dining room outside the room, directly related to food. A separate room for eating food is considered a luxury that only owners of private houses can afford, but not the owners of tiny apartments in Khrushchev. The owners of spacious living rooms were lucky, because they can be combined with any necessary platform, which is not possible to equip in a separate room. Begin work with the project. It is much easier to develop it for the living room and dining room, since both rooms have a similar functional purpose: relaxation for body and soul. The dining area can become the accent of the room, its zest or background, which competently shades the main platform. The organic design of the living-dining room is quite difficult to create. The task only at first glance seems easy, but in fact it includes a number of nuances, without which the situation will look unfinished or “blinded” in haste.

Rules for creating an interior

The first step in the forthcoming work should be the project. It notes the features of decoration and zoning. In parallel, they are thinking through materials that will allow them to translate their plans into reality. Then, large objects of furniture are applied to the plan, wondering what their location will be optimal. Decorative design completes the preparatory phase. It is also worth considering the features of each of the rooms. For example, guests can eat and watch TV at the same time or enjoy the views from the panoramic windows. Accordingly, it is necessary to consider such an arrangement of the dining table so that nothing obscures the view from this point. This is especially true of partitions and furniture, which can act as delimiters of space and artificial interference. Also take into account the presence of a short transition from the dining room to the kitchen, because from there you will have to constantly transfer empty and full plates. The trajectory should not be complicated with numerous obstacles in the form of sofas and coffee tables. For this reason, the dining room is not advised to "hide" in the far corner. If there are no other options, then the passage is maximally freed. Often there are "triple" combined options when they do not transfer the dining room to the guest room, but dismantle the wall between the latter and the kitchen. Thus, in one room as many as three functional zones are collected.

Design features

Eating will always be accompanied by showered crumbs and small debris that will settle on the floor. For this reason, the dining area is best designed with practical materials that are easy to wash if necessary. Particular attention is paid to the color scheme. In the hall, the use of experimental combinations is allowed, which will set up for outdoor activities. In the dining rooms it is not allowed to use cold, “unappetizing” tones that do not facilitate eating. Separately develop a composition for the placement of lighting devices. Now in one room two rooms will coexist together, and each of them should not lack in light.

Zoning

The selection of a dining area and a recreation area in such a room is carried out both with objects, furnishings, furniture, and lighting, with color. In zoning, you can use various finishes and materials of floor and wall coverings. The place for eating should differ from the rest area in shade or color. Differentiation of furniture is carried out by the arrangement of chairs, sofas, shelving. The easiest zoning is done using a large arch. With this decision, light and visual space of the room is provided. An unusual and original solution is to divide the space with different levels of floors or ceilings. Lighting sources should be provided for multi-level and local, so that they do not "capture" other areas. In each separate functional area, one ceiling lamp is hung. The type and shape of the chandelier are selected based on the height of the ceilings. Beautiful local LED backlighting at the lowest level will help to effectively highlight a resting place. When using zoning with multilevel floors and ceilings, internal sources of light are organically integrated into the step.

Finish

Finishing includes two stages:

  • Surface preparation;
  • Coating them with appropriate materials.

They start work from the ceiling, then go to the walls and complete the process with a floor. The living room is not classified as a room with a difficult microclimate. Even if it is combined with the dining room, no significant changes in the "status" of the room will occur. A completely different situation is with the trio (kitchen, dining room, living room).Since they are almost close to the studios, they pay special attention to materials that will survive constant cooking, steam, bits of fat, corrosive odors, high temperatures and other “charms” of the kitchen environment.
It's important to know. The preparatory phase usually includes a putty to smooth out defects, a primer to ensure good adhesion of the material and adhesive to the surface and, if necessary, the construction of frame structures.

Flooring selection

Among the variety of options, preference is given to those that fit into the budget of the entire repair campaign and correspond to the aesthetic tastes of the owners. Popular materials include:

  • Laminate. Easy to care, durable, belongs to the group with an average cost.
  • Parquet board. It is a natural, environmentally friendly product, which is valued somewhat higher.
  • Linoleum. The most budget material. Suitable for decoration of the dining area.
  • Carpet. It is gradually becoming a thing of the past, as it collects all possible dust and, with the tenacity of the dwarves on the gold mines, does not want to give these deposits to a vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, the material will require constant, professional cleaning. At a cost refers to the budget group.
  • Bulk floor. Looks great in any room. It can have not only patterns on the surface, but also three-dimensional images. Imitates any texture of natural material. It belongs to expensive options, but due to its durability and monumental strength it pays for its value after a dozen years.

If you do not have the opportunity to purchase an expensive and stylish coating, then its cheaper counterpart can be covered with a soft carpet, which also adds comfort to the room.

Wall decoration

The walls are finished in the following ways:

  • Paint and putty. The simplest option that will allow you to create a monophonic coating (even or with a certain texture).Suitable for rooms where the elegant interior needs to be shaded by simplicity in background design.
  • Glue the wallpaper. The universal option "for all times." The range of wallpapers allows you to choose the type, color, texture and pattern in accordance with the requirements of the owner of the room. Of the materials noted plain paper on the non-woven, durable vinyl, luxurious metallized and sophisticated fabric surfaces.
  • Panels or tiles made of PVC and MDF, fiberboard, particleboard. We had to combine the options, because from the point of view of design they are similar. PVC perfectly imitates any texture and has a wide selection of colors. Compressed and glued wood processing wastes are also perfectly masked for any wood species, even the rarest and most expensive. At cost, the material is close to the "golden mean" (price + quality).
  • Cork coating. Recently, only gaining popularity. Natural, relatively inexpensive material in a pleasant shade with an inimitable "soft" texture.
  • Natural or artificial brick, stone. The material is suitable only for specific interiors, as it has a rough texture. Natural options are durable and high cost. Their imitation boasts more loyal prices that affect performance.

In some interiors, the walls are draped with fabric. A lot of material will go to a large room, since the surface is often decorated not with solid canvases, but with neat folds. The latter, by the way, is considered an original technique for stretching a room vertically if it cannot boast of high ceilings.

Ceiling decoration

For ceilings use traditional paint and putty, a more complex plastic or wooden coating, tiles, expensive suspended or suspended ceilings and decorative elements. The latter may include beams, “steps” (artificially created level differences), stucco molding, and even panoramas over the entire surface area. Particular attention should be paid to drapery ceilings with textiles. As the center, choose the point where the chandelier is located, and fabric folds diverge from it in different directions, creating the illusion of a dome.

Mounting frame structures in low rooms is not recommended, you will lose the already scarce centimeters in the ceiling area.

Style selection

Among the variety of styles, choose one that meets the aesthetic preferences of the owners and pursues the "right" goals from their point of view. For strict and restrained people, similar directions are suitable: minimalism, constructivism, high-tech. Adherents of "calm" luxury dining-living room are designed in accordance with the principles of classics, art deco, loft. For those who put comfort above beauty and are constantly looking for “average” options, fusion, country, and boho are suitable. Heavy chic perfectly embody the baroque, Italian style and art nouveau. The combination of practicality and low prices are kitsch and pop art. Those who like to look into the future will appreciate futurism and post punk. Romantic natures will feel at ease in a combined room, which is decorated in Provence or marine style. Each of the directions is subject to special principles. For example, in the Scandinavian style, it is necessary to have a fireplace in the room, which will “warm” it, not only in the literal sense of the word, but also in a figurative one (cold colors always prevail in shades). In the classic design, the room will have a large number of luxurious decor, the main purpose of which is to show the status of the owners and their ability to understand expensive things. The interior design of the living-dining room in minimalism obeys the laws of rationalism and practicality. This direction is trying to reflect the ordered spiritual content of a person in an apartment setting. Hi-tech loves everything ultra new and modern. Household appliances, which in any other style would play a secondary role, come to the fore and become a stylish decor.

Ways to differentiate the dining room

The dining room does not have to be put on public display. In rooms of complex shape, it is easy to beat features and use them to delimit a separate area. If there is a bay window in the living room, then this natural niche is usually adapted to the dining area. It will simultaneously be slightly “far away” from the overall design composition, but will not cease to be part of it. The original solution will be the removal of the dining area outside the room onto a balcony or loggia combined with it.

Lighting

Before combining the two rooms, it is worth considering in advance the layout of the light sources. You may have to stretch additional wiring, so you need to solve the problem at the project stage before finishing. The combination will force owners to worry about “double” coverage, because there are now two functional zones. Even one ceiling chandelier can no longer cope. It is recommended that a group of lighting devices be installed above the dining area, which will hang low above the table. If necessary, their height can be adjusted. Thus, you will create a sense of isolation among diners from the rest of the room. The practice of zoning by point sources of light is also actively used. In small living rooms, which are dangerous to combine (usually in cramped conditions, but not in insult, it does not work here), the abundance of artificial light will save from clutter. It will be reflected many times in glass and mirror surfaces.

Furniture selection

Furniture is recommended to choose to match the style decision. The dining room and living room set should have an emphasized similarity in details, but differences in the material of execution, textiles and even colors. The furniture minimum includes: a dining table with chairs, a sofa, armchairs and a coffee table, storage space (cabinets, shelves, dressing rooms), a TV stand. This list can be supplemented depending on the dimensions of the main room: rooms with an area of 10 square meters already allow the use of additional interior objects.

Conclusion

The combination of the living room and the dining room is an organic combination of rooms similar in spirit. Now it will be much easier to hold joint holidays: you no longer have to move the table from the kitchen. Boring dinners dispel watching TV, which is within walking distance. Finally, you can start your own dining traditions (in large families), because now you do not have to huddle in a cramped room and you can even set up a round table. Separate dining rooms are the destiny of the owners of country cottages and inaccessible "chic" for the inhabitants. In conditions of space deficit, one has to constantly come up with non-standard solutions to problems. Studios and combined rooms relate to such practical, but convenient options.
