Country style kitchen design

The main characteristic that defines the country style (rustic) is its diversity. A Russian hut, a bright Ukrainian hut, an English cottage or a Mediterranean country house - all this fits the definition of a "peasant" style. The main thing that unites various types of design is the proximity to an extremely simple rural life. At the same time, it does not matter at all which country or culture is involved. When creating an interior comfort and convenience are at the forefront. Elegant and sophisticated decor is not very appropriate here. All interior items are durable, reliable to roughness. It is evident that they can serve not one generation, but several. The theme of today's material is the design of a country-style kitchen, its features, the main features and ways of translating design ideas.

The main features of the style

First of all, you need to decide: which design you are interested in, how you imagine the look of your kitchen. This is understandable: the Italian trattoria is very different from the Scandinavian house or the Swiss chalet. Have you decided? Perfectly. Now you can start choosing kitchen furniture, fixtures, accessories and decor items. For example, stone flooring and small ceramic tiles on the walls will take you to Italy, and embroidered towels and decorative bundles of onions, garlic and fragrant dried herbs will help to recreate the hut of a diligent Ukrainian peasant.

However, for all its diversity, there are a number of basic features that define style canons:

  • The use of natural materials;
  • Natural color palette;
  • Straightforward geometry of interior items;
  • The use of a large number of textiles;
  • Shelves and cabinets, open or closed.

The origins of the style date back to the time when nothing was known to mankind about plastic and polymers. Therefore, such materials will look in rural design, to put it mildly, strange. No place in it and chrome details. It is advisable to replace them with forged metal. The mixer may be made of a material that simulates an ornamental stone, for example, malachite, marble or granite. Appropriate in the interior and stone countertops. But stone is quite expensive material. You can solve this problem using artificial stone. In general, special attention should be paid to the materials for the production of countertops and sinks, since these work areas are most intensively operated.

Clock on the wall

Natural wood is the most commonly used material for country interiors. Of the varieties of wood, preference is given to relatively budget options - birch, pine, spruce, linden.

Color schemes

With all the variety of color options, the country style does not accept any “acidic” and too bright colors. The optimal shades for the prevailing color are pastel. Milky, pale blue, light yellow, white and beige - these colors give the impression of relaxation, peace, tranquility and comfort. In addition, they visually increase the room, which is especially true for a small kitchenette. Darker colors can be used as accents, to highlight certain areas, giving saturation to the interior. It is best to choose olive, terracotta and brown colors as accents. The kitchen design will look original and stylish, thanks to well-chosen combinations.

Finishing Basics

The main feature of the rustic-style kitchen decoration is that natural materials should be predominantly used in the decoration. However, some of them are very expensive, others are not practical enough. Let's try to find a suitable compromise option and choose the best types of finishes.

Walls

The design of the walls in the style of "country" can be varied:

  • Staining. Here you should give preference to the natural "rustic" colors: shades of beige, green, olive or brown. Of neutral tones, white and gray are appropriate.
  • Decorative plaster with deliberate negligence. She emphasizes the old-fashioned and simple interior. One gets the impression that the diligent, but not very skillful owners themselves worked on the arrangement of the kitchen.
  • Wallpaper. Solid colors are unlikely to look authentic. Plant motifs, stripes, cages or original ethnic patterns are much more appropriate.
  • Tile. Practical and relatively inexpensive ceramics are perfect for wall cladding in the work area. An option is also possible with facing the walls with tiles completely, and not just in the working area.
  • Wall panels.The use of wooden plating is the best suited for the reconstruction of rural life, so their use will come in handy.
  • Brick. This can be a natural material or wall covering with imitation of brickwork. Simplicity, naturalness and old-fashionedness are exactly what the designer seeks. However, the kitchen "in brick" looks too cramped and uncomfortable, so a combination of this material with wood or painting the walls is appropriate.

Ceiling

To decorate the ceiling, you can use the following options:

  • Whitewash. This finish looks very organic. The smoothness inherent in modern styles is completely inappropriate here. Deliberate negligence and "carelessness", rough surfaces with traces of brushes - something that fully meets the style requirements. Does plaster begin to crack over time? This is absolutely not critical and fits perfectly into the country.
  • Matte stretch ceilings. The reflective surface does not fit categorically! This is an inexpensive and practical option. With a careful attitude, the tension surface can last a long time. The disadvantage of this option is that the stretched canvas "eats" about 4 cm in height, which is not so small for a low apartment.
  • Tree. This material is able to turn the kitchen in a city apartment into a cozy "village house" (just like in an advertisement) or a closed terrace in the country. However, natural wood makes the ceiling visually lower. Therefore, it is advisable to use a wooden lining, painted white. You will get a cozy kitchen with Scandinavian motifs (the sun in Norway and Sweden is an infrequent guest, so Scandinavians love light colors).
  • Whitewash + tree. This is the use of ceiling beams on a whitewash background. The interior is cozy and comfortable. However, all materials must certainly be of the best quality. In addition, this option is only suitable for high ceilings (from 3 meters).

Floor

Optimal, according to the canons of style, are materials such as wooden floorboards, stone or ceramic tiles. The first two materials are expensive and not accessible to everyone. A good alternative to wooden floors is parquet. It costs less than solid wood, and looks almost the same as natural material. Even cheaper options are linoleum or laminate with realistic wood imitation. If you choose flooring with a high strength class, they will not only look beautiful, but will last a long time. Natural stone can be replaced with porcelain tiles. It is desirable to choose a covering with imitation of a natural stone or ethnic patterns. Black and white gamut fits well in the Provencal interior.

If the kitchen serves as a dining room at the same time, you can use various types of floor coverings for zoning. For example, in the working area of the studio, kitchen-dining room or kitchen-living room, tiles are appropriate, and for the dining area a tree or its imitation is suitable. As for the color of the floor, it can be both natural and colored.

Multicolored knitted or woven rugs fit beautifully into the “rustic” kitchen decoration, and you can also make homemade ones.

Lighting

The lighting of the rustic kitchen combines the use of artificial and natural lighting. Choosing the right lighting fixtures for the kitchen, you need to make sure that they are designed in the same style with furniture, textiles and decorative elements. Some designers like to play "in contrasts", placing in the middle of the rural interior a richly designed and quite modern chandelier. However, such bold decisions require experience and special talent, otherwise you can slip into a primitive kitsch.

Recessed fixtures for lighting in a country-style kitchen

Here are some design tips for choosing a fixture in a country kitchen:

  • Antique chandeliers will complement the picture of peasant life.Tiffany chandeliers with stained glass will look especially good. No less good choice - candelabra with light bulbs that simulate candles. A cheaper option is a retro-style lampshade: glass, plastic or textile, on a spiral suspension.
  • The shade of lighting is preferable to warm, close to natural. The interior will seem cozy, and the variegation of textures, shades and textures - not so flashy. Colored lighting is undesirable.
  • A good solution is to equip the kitchen with a dimmer, a device for regulating the intensity of lighting. If desired, it can be made muffled, comfortable or, conversely, very bright. Thanks to the dimmer, it is really possible to create the impression that the kitchen is lit with flames from a fireplace or candles.
  • In addition to the central chandelier, it is advisable to use additional lighting from a sconce or a table lamp. Unusually, but it will look very beautiful in a spacious room with a floor lamp located next to the kitchen sofa.

Furniture and appliances

Country is the epitome of old-fashioned. Therefore, it is logical that all elements of civilization are better to hide behind the facades of furniture. This applies to a washing machine and dishwasher, an AGV column, a microwave oven, a refrigerator, etc. But it is unlikely that you can hide the stove, hood and oven, so it is advisable to choose them in a retro style. Such equipment is commercially available; finding it is not a problem. As for furniture, the requirements are as follows:

  • A set of kitchen furniture. Ideal if it is wooden. Products made of MDF or particleboard finished with veneer also look good. The decor can be carved, metallic; glass inserts are appropriate.
  • The design of the cabinet can be massive, antique, or lightweight, with open shelves. This is quite country style. Ceramic dishes or clay pots on display showcase cosiness, simplicity and rustic hospitality.Tea boxes, bundles of medicinal herbs, containers for bulk products - all this is quite functional and at the same time serves as a decor.
  • The color of the furniture depends on the size of the room. A large, well-lit kitchen, even furnished with dark massive furniture, will not look overloaded with interior items. If the room is small, then light furniture (shades of ivory, beige, cream and gray) is much more appropriate.
  • The table and chairs can be wicker, rattan or wooden. Forged furniture looks good.
  • The use of corner cabinets helps to better equip the space.

Country-style kitchen with bright furniture

For realistic reproduction of rural life, you can use chairs of various types and colors in the dining group. Instead of the usual furniture, you can order products of the "country" design. For example, a roughly knocked together table with a cross-shaped underframe.

Decor

Consider how you can flourish the "rural" decoration of the kitchen with accessories and textiles. Curtains should be made of natural fabric. It can be plain, checkered, flower, polka dots or with fruit patterns. Items decorated with lace and embroidery look very original. As for the design, it can be different: from traditional "grandmother's" curtains to quite modern pleated curtains, rolled or Roman. You can also use a lambrequin decoration. The color scheme of the scenery is natural: green, yellow, blue, blue. The decoration of the plant window in ceramic flowerpots (begonia, cacti, aloe, Kalanchoe and, of course, geranium) complete the decoration. For kitchen decor, you can use these varieties of accessories:

  • Baskets of twigs and metal, stylized boxes and chests;
  • Wood or earthenware. Walls can be decorated with decorative plates;
  • Real kerosene lamp, antique stylized candlesticks;
  • Do-it-yourself napkins, cloth dolls, homespun tablecloths;
  • Embroidered paintings;
  • The watch is a "walker".

By the way, these same elements can be used in the arrangement of a living room.

Conclusion

Country - an unusual, original style that opens up almost unlimited possibilities for creativity. However, if the kitchen is small, you need to be careful to not overload the interior with unnecessary decor. However, if you get creative, even in the smallest kitchen up to 10 square meters. m, not to mention the spacious, you can create a beautiful design, not oversaturated with details.
