Style History

The style arose at the beginning of the twentieth century in France, namely in Paris. By the 20-30s, he had risen to the peak of popularity. These were the post-war years of the crisis, the Great Depression was gaining momentum, but by the 40s the style had already entered the international arena. It combined functional industrial with shades of African primitivism, the spirit of the jazz era with the rigor of neoclassicism, shiny metal with precious woods, the color palette of Fauvism with black and white gradients.

Art Deco Interior

Later, in some countries, art deco or art deco gave rise to the style of functionalism, at the same time the art nouveau style emerged, representing a new art. Art Deco had a noticeable influence on the architecture of buildings, the interior design of the USSR in the Stalin period - the 30-40s. Then he was considered a "solid style for the middle class," and therefore for most Soviet people was considered unacceptable. Tourism and travel to exotic countries became popular all over the world then, a fashion for various souvenirs, trophies brought from there arose.

In modern times, real bone figures, terracotta figurines from Africa or tribes of American Indians are often replaced by crafts of local designers, which makes the design a little cheaper, without compromising the overall appearance.

The ceiling is whitened, made of drywall, including multi-level, decorated with gypsum, polyurethane stucco molding. Plastic ceiling sockets, skirting boards, corner elements, moldings and half columns on the walls can be gilded or bronzed. The walls themselves are decorated with decorative plasters, silk wallpaper with geometric patterns or heraldic ornaments, African patterns, oriental hieroglyphs.

The floor is usually made of parquet, combining several types of wood, from which complex patterns are laid out - with central symmetry throughout the room or small, repeating ones. Less often, floors are decorated with stone, since it is very cold, and the mirror design is suitable for both the floor and the ceiling, walls, and any furniture. Interior doors are preferably double-leafed wooden, paneled or having an insert of patterned glass, stained-glass windows depicting fantastic plots of ancient myths.

Lighting

The right light in the art deco interiors is not the last thing, creating coziness, giving the atmosphere even more solemnity. These are huge multi-path chandeliers of crystal, glass that gently scatters light. The smaller the room, the more lamps and fixtures should be used. This is especially true for the "northern" rooms with small windows or those where the windows are completely absent - dressing room, bathroom, hallway, corridor.

The walls are illuminated with the help of sconces, sometimes having overly elaborate shapes, floor lamps with large shades on an ornate carved wooden leg or with a base in the form of an ancient Greek statue. The illumination of the floor for this interior is unacceptable in any form - the light falls strictly from above, maximum at the side, but not less than from a height of one third of the distance from the floor to the ceiling.

Art Deco Interior Lighting

Chandeliers fit the most incredible, large, luxurious - with a large number of horns, complex geometry, gilding, in the form of a huge painted ball, etc. Miniature spotlights are allowed only in those rooms where, due to the small area, a full-fledged chandelier does not fit in any way.

Light is preferable to warm - with the help of it the shapes of various decorative elements are more advantageously emphasized. The abundance of mirrors also visually "multiplies" the amount of lighting.

  • nut;
  • oak;

It is not necessary to give preference to overly massive pieces of furniture, if they are necessary, they should have separate elegant elements or decor - openwork carving, painting, inlay.

Accessories, decor

Decorative design is very diverse, most often in abundance there are such items and details:

  • geometric shapes - circles, squares, zigzags, polygons, ovals, black and white piano keys, steps;

In a too cramped room you should not place too much decor, it is enough to focus on few contrasting elements - the room will look cluttered.

Room Interiors

This style is not widespread, but it is widely known everywhere. Any hints of asceticism, minimalism of the interior are alien to him.

Here are used in abundance:

  • carpets, curtains, all kinds of draperies;
  • decorative fountains, podiums, arches;
  • reproductions of paintings in the style of cubism, famous American graphics;
  • sculptures from ebony, ceramics;
  • floor vases, palm trees in pots.

Art Deco Room Interior

In the Art Deco style, it is easy to combine objects that are difficult to fit into the framework of one style. There are always many elements here, and the overall picture need not be conceptual.

It is unlikely to be able to completely recreate the interior of the “palace” of the last century in a small-sized apartment, but the use of individual elements and style attributes will make it possible to make at least a miniature similarity.

Bedroom

It looks good light, tall, as if a "chest" on the sides of the chest of drawers with curly handles on the facades of drawers. Illumination on both sides of the bed above the bedside tables is carried out using a sophisticated form of sconces, with shades in the form of flowers that gently scatter light. Intricate interweaving of patterns on the wallpaper will enliven the room, and a decorative or electric fireplace will create a feeling of warmth, coziness.

The bedroom looks perfect, where one or two, maximum three groups of objects have the same pattern - the carpet is combined with curtains, ceiling tiles with wallpaper, pillows on the bed with upholstery and patterns on the floor. A double bed with a patterned canopy and a view, in harmony with a sophisticated desk, dressing table, above which there is a round mirror, decorated with a frame in the form of the sun. The dressing area is separated by a patterned screen.

Art Deco Bedroom

If the wall opposite the head of the bed is decorated with an intricate labyrinth, which is often an attribute of the Art Deco style, then it will be nice to consider it, meditating before bedtime.

Living room

A huge leather sofa with a dome-shaped back will become the compositional center of the Art Deco interior. The medium-sized interior will be complemented by a dresser made of rosewood or palm tree, covered with a thick layer of varnish, a low "eastern" table, chairs or ottomans decorated with zebra or leopard prints. The middle of the ceiling will be decorated with a large crystal chandelier, and the corners - floor lamps or sconces, made in the same luxurious style.On the floor in the center of the room there will be a Japanese-style bamboo mat interwoven with gold threads or a fluffy carpet with folk ornaments.

A marble console, playing the role of a stand for a flat TV, would also be appropriate. In the most spacious rooms with high ceilings, good acoustics, a piano is placed on the podium, occasionally even a full-fledged drum kit or a DJ console with all the associated attributes.

Art Deco Living Room

The living room space may well look like an exhibition hall, where many different objects are examined for hours, each time finding all new details.

Children

The furniture in the nursery, like other Art Deco rooms, does not have sharp corners. A warm, soft woolen rug allows children to play on the floor for long winter evenings. Do not overload this room with an abundance of fragile decor, especially if the children are small - safety is above all. Stucco molding on the ceiling, a high lamp from unbreakable glass, a canopy above the bed, a lot of wardrobe trunks for storing toys, a couple of pictures in carved frames - this is enough to clearly indicate the style.

It is easy to arrange a room with your own hands, along with the child, depicting through a stencil colored damask monograms, geometric shapes on the walls, lampshades, window frames. The rising sun is often depicted above the head, in harmony with the same embroidery on the backs of soft chairs or sofa cushions.

Nursery in the style of Art Deco

The following shades are preferred here:

  • pink, blue;
  • gold, silver;
  • violet, beige;
  • light yellow, spring greens;
  • linen, bluish gray.

A miniature dressing table is perfect for this style, if the room belongs to a girl. A convenient functional table of suitable style is also made for the boy.

Bedside table

Kitchen

Light marble walls are often present in kitchens made in this style.It looks most beautiful when the room has an insulated balcony, a spacious loggia or bay window - then part of the window panes is decorated with colored stained-glass windows, which allows even the most “pale” interior to sparkle with new colors.

The floor from ceramic tiles to black and white “checkerboard” will be very appropriate here. It can be combined with the same color as a kitchen apron, contrasting sharply with the headset, which is selected light or excessively bright. Curved countertops of work surfaces, a rounded bar counter with suitable type of chairs will fit perfectly into the overall style of Art Deco. The facades of the headset are necessarily glossy, the doors have engraved glass or colored stained-glass windows; all household kitchen appliances are preferably built-in. The dining table has a luxurious tablecloth, and the chairs around it are adequately upholstered.

Art Deco Kitchen

An island set is quite suitable for a spacious kitchen, and soft sofas and all kinds of decor will take a place along the walls.

Hallway

The walls of the long corridor are decorated with lamps stylized as oil lamps or candles, located on both sides, on the floor they lay a carpet path, as in a real palace. Plastic stucco along the ceiling also does not hurt.

Art Deco Hallway

A large mirror in a wooden or forged frame with gilding, from the threshold emphasizes the high cost of the interior. The graphics here will come in handy: wallpaper with damask ornament, floor tiles or ottomans with the same pattern. The legs of the few hallway furniture are often wrapped in fish skin. In a square hallway they hang a chandelier that resembles an inverted dome in shape.

For a narrow corridor or cramped hall, the most light-colored wall decoration is selected with a minimum of contrasts.

Patterns on the floor

Bathroom

The walls, decorated with frescoes a la Egypt, will give this room uniqueness, creating interesting accents. The same motifs are duplicated on towels, a curtain over the bathroom.Stone cladding, coupled with spotlights, will add even more solidity to the interior. Monochrome porcelain tile on the floor of a shared or separate bathroom, especially contrasting with the color of the walls, gives a hint of the Renaissance, and the abundance of mirrors will make the room bright and spacious. The golden mosaic, which represents individual areas of the room, also looks great.

If the floor is made entirely of stone, it is advisable to equip it with special heating, otherwise bare feet will be cold to step on it even if there is a carpet.

Conclusion

Art Deco, embodying luxury and glamor, will appeal to fans of classic, baroque interiors, and avid lovers of loft, high-tech or industrial styles. He is chic and, at the same time, bold, luxurious, maximalist. Art Deco is more suitable for a large, spacious house, but the decoration of even a small apartment in this style also looks great. It is sometimes problematic to arrange the entire interior in the framework of art deco or art nouveau on their own, so many turn to professional interior designers for help.
