Art Nouveau Design

The broad concept of Art Nouveau is used not only in art, but also in the architectural style. Its inception at the beginning of the 20th century was marked by rapid spread throughout the world. At that time, the ideological component of the new trend corresponded to its name. Despite the short period of its heyday, this style managed to leave a serious legacy. Many people still seek to recreate Art Nouveau design in their home. What needs to be done for this will be described in more detail below.

History of Art Nouveau

Its appearance was due to chaos in the design of interiors, which developed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Most designers experimented with eclecticism without bringing anything new to the already existing pantheon of styles. Everyone tried to carve a spark from a simple mixture. There was no originality in this, since any combination left the design still recognizable. Therefore, the appearance of Art Nouveau was the answer of time to a question hanging in the air. At first, his impetuous gait was perceived with hostility: fresh style was instantly dubbed "bad taste." However, the speed with which Art Nouveau burst into architectural design could not go unnoticed.

Art Nouveau style in the interior

It was used by the most brilliant innovators of that time. They were the first to realize the exclusivity and dissimilarity of style to everything that was before that. Many were also attracted by the purity of modernity, due to the complexity of manufacturing branded attributes. However, this subsequently destroyed him: during the period of the growth of mass industry, the high cost of Art Nouveau furniture seemed inappropriate. Therefore, with the outbreak of the First World War and the financial crisis in Europe, fashionable style has lost its leading position. Nevertheless, he managed to gain a foothold in the consciousness and vocabulary of many countries of the world (art nouveau, tiffany, liberty).

Distinctive features of style

The bright appearance of the Art Nouveau interior is easy to recognize by the following signs:

Focus on the use of wood elementsThis is due to the fact that the style recognizes everything only natural. The most suitable option is considered to be oak or beech wood, with an obvious fiber structure.
Using smooth shapesSymmetry and straight lines are categorically denied. In all, the softness of the contours, the patterned flow of elements into each other can be traced. Corners are smoothed.
Plant themeArt Nouveau ornaments often contain a reference to the image of real flowers or animals.It can be graceful lilies, exotic butterflies.
Stained Glass DecorationTheir use in the decor of the room is strongly encouraged. The theme of the drawings is characterized by exquisite abstraction, branchy plants.
Arched windowsHigh openings are ideal for these purposes, complement the overall impression of the interior of the room.
Doors with windowsDecorative slots in the wide canvases of rectangular doors are decorated with the same stained glass. Mosaic decor is also allowed.
Forged elements on flights of stairsGraceful handrails harmoniously look with wide steps.

Style Layout Features

In order to create a space in this style, it is advisable to be the owner of a studio apartment. Since modernity requires a solid quadrature. Layout involves the use of various methods of zoning: using patterned flooring, furniture partitions, various accessories. All of them should be without corners, with smooth and even openwork lines. Separation of the parts of the room is extremely soft, free.

Art Nouveau interior layout

A feature of decorative Art Nouveau is that with its help you can hide the poor layout of the apartment with a non-standard arrangement of rooms. An asymmetric interior design that gravitates to ornate wavy textures easily fits into it.

Style color scheme

A distinctive feature of the natural elements of the style is their natural color in the interior. Therefore, one should not be surprised at the abundance of pastel, muted tones. These include: all shades of brown (from milk - to the color of coffee), the colors of the achromatic palette (from silver - to the color of wet asphalt), green. The task of the latter is to revive the decor with his presence. Sometimes a strong contrast is used - the same red as the opposite color in the palette.

Light colors in the Art Nouveau interior

The operation of elements with a pronounced shade is allowed in minimal quantities.

To create a harmony of decoration, furniture and textile elements, designers select the ideal color ratio. However, the soul of the artist must know the measure, as the selection of colors will cause associations with vulgar eclecticism. Therefore, the first step is to look for an accent element, so that there is something to build on. If this is an exquisite piece of furniture, then the background color of the walls or the delicacy of the ceiling should play a secondary role. In any case, do not use a large number of colors - there is no place for a rainbow in Art Nouveau.

Art Nouveau Walls

They are for background only. Their dominance is not allowed a priori. Therefore, the color is devoid of flashy tones and excessive texture. A pearl, beige, heavenly shade is welcome. Only in the sleeping area is it possible to use more saturated brown tones. Matte background is decorated with the image of a branching plant. In this case, the stem must necessarily reach up, symbolizing growth and development.

Bright walls of the bedroom in modern style

Some interior designers install wall panels in the lower plane for practical purposes. The material for such an outcome is a natural wood or a more budgetary laminate. The upper plane is covered with muted tones of wallpaper or paint. The key principle here is to create a background, not an emphasis to attract attention.

Windows under the ceiling

Art Nouveau Ceiling

The ceiling is subject to special requirements. Contrary to common practice, more attention is paid to decorating it than to the same walls. Often there is a relief stucco molding, volumetric elements of natural wood. One can see the monumentality of the classic in this: when the combination of wavy lines and plant patterns with static elements on the ceiling forms the dynamics of asymmetry.

Ceiling decoration with dark Art Nouveau chandeliers

There are also exquisite stained-glass windows on the ceiling, in combination with dim lighting.Thanks to the game of multi-colored glasses, a chamber mood is created. This is the best way to create an original living room. The owners can also be involved in the process of creating ceiling stained-glass windows. Since the atmosphere in the room directly depends on the quality of the light.

Art Nouveau floor

Like the walls, the lower plane of the room plays a secondary role. Its main task in the modern style is to harmoniously combine with other elements. Therefore, the tonality of the flooring depends on the general decor of the room. A popular option is parquet made of natural wood, wild stone. If most modern coatings involve a checkerboard layout of wooden panels, then modernist floors mean a herringbone. Budget floor options should imitate the natural material in a quality manner. With the help of modern technology it is possible to create an elegant pattern even on a wild stone.

To save financial resources, it is permissible to use porcelain stoneware or laminate as a floor covering.

Furniture selection

The smooth contour of the furniture set in this style seems to invite guests to relax. The absence of sharp corners, natural materials for manufacturing, the presence of asymmetry, muffled color finishes - all this contributes to a comfortable stay in the room. At the same time, cabinet furniture stretches upwards, like all plants in the images. The vertical dominant in combination with bizarre forms maximally expresses the idea of modernity.

Light furniture in the Art Nouveau interior

The number of furniture attributes is based on the functional purpose of the room. The need for free space eliminates the clutter of the home. At the same time, the presence of upholstered furniture does not apply to modernity. It is covered with textile elements, fitting into the overall picture of the style. The wood base of the furniture comes first. It is advisable to avoid a large number of angles, focus on the elegant armrests.

Lighting

The classical principles of lighting work here, since the location of lighting devices in a modernist decor plays a primary role. The following types of fixtures are considered constant attributes of style:

  1. Crystal chandelier of impressive size. It should attract attention with its iridescent light. Gold spraying is encouraged on the metal structure of the product. Some lamps are not made of crystal, but of stained-glass multi-colored glass.
  2. Floor lamps correspond to the main element. The natural basis should emphasize the ideology of modernity, regardless of whether it is floor or table.
  3. Conical wall lamps can have monograms, asymmetric lines. Their complex shape echoes the floral patterns on the walls.

Textile

Dense natural fabrics complement the overall ensemble of Art Nouveau. Massive satin curtains in the window openings, exquisite velvet pillows on the sofa. Silk curtains are sewn in compliance with asymmetry, which allows simulating the movement of waves when opening. Forged cornices and lambrequins adorn the window landscape. Plain fabric can be complemented by an interesting pattern without catchy colors. The goal of the curtains is to harmonize with the upholstery and the flowing style of the furniture set. A holistic image is created using a soft game with the keys of the material.

What elements of decor will suit this style

The final chord in the design of the room is the arrangement of decorative accessories that do not have practical functions. They are designed to fill the atmosphere with comfort:

  • Crystal, bronze or porcelain products;
  • Fine watches;
  • Candlesticks, sculptures;
  • Wooden paintings and frames;
  • Decorative pillows made of silk;
  • Stained Glass, etc.

Art Nouveau Decor

The main principle in the case of Art Nouveau is the color harmony of products made from natural materials. The theme remains the same: flora and fauna.Sometimes the virtues of Japanese painting are used, whose love of calligraphy and flowering gardens fits perfectly into the style. In Europe, the recognized masterpieces of modernity are the work of Klimt and the Flies. In America - Birbanka.

The use of a fireplace in modernity stands apart. Its classic outlines and forged elements will decorate any interior.

Hallway

In the narrow corridor, designers focus on the doorway. The canvas with soft bends of fittings and stained glass inserts attracts attention. Walls and ceilings rarely stand out from the general background, because expressive lines and patterns can disrupt the calm atmosphere of the style. Therefore, pastel paint is used instead of wallpaper. Together with lighting, it is able to combine walls with a ceiling. The flooring is a continuation of the room floor, which means it is made of wooden parquet.

Art Nouveau entrance hall

Hallway furniture involves the use of built-in cabinet furniture in the form of sliding wardrobes. Mandatory attributes include a pier glass with curved asymmetric shapes. Bright color of natural wood is allowed. For comfort, several wall lights are installed at a small height from the floor.

The main accessories in the corridor are decorative mirrors and thematic paintings. But textile elements should be avoided.

Living room

For the most complete recreation of style in the living room you will need a spacious room. The planes are decorated with smooth transitions, painted in ashy colors of the selected color palette. You can use a gradient to emphasize zones. For wall decoration, it is not recommended to resort to using paper wallpaper or plaster. Is that liquid wallpaper with a barely noticeable pattern. For ceiling coverings, painting is the best option. No plastic or textured lining. The value is diffuse lighting.

Art Nouveau living room

The wear-resistant floor in the form of monophonic parquet can be supplemented with decorative carpets of contrasting color. However, the carpet is categorically not applicable in the modern style. The same can be said about linoleum or ceramic tiles.

For furniture, an arrangement in the L-shaped or U-shaped is selected. Plain products are located in the center of the room, on the carpet. Dark woods with pastel textiles without motley elements. The set of furniture items is minimal: a sofa, several armchairs, a table with low legs and a countertop.

Lamps on the bedside tables by the sofa

A large chandelier can be complemented by local lighting on wrought metal wall lamps. Light should softly emphasize the tonality of textile components (pillows, carpet, curtains).

An important role in the living room is played by accessories made of metal rods, wood or crystal. Elegant art nouveau paintings will be the perfect accent.

Bedroom

A characteristic feature of the bedroom in this style is the minimalism of accessories, a color palette and soft lighting. When decorating walls, textured plastering is allowed in the best traditions of classicism, wallpapering without vivid drawings. The ceiling is a continuation of the walls, so it is faced with the same materials. Fashionable stretch coatings successfully combine with diffused light. But antique moldings should be avoided. An expensive parquet made of valuable wood is installed as a floor covering.

Art Nouveau bedroom

Furniture implies an emphasis on a chic bed with an asymmetric headboard. Low tables and nightstands contrast with the backdrop of a massive wardrobe with colored glass doors. Bed linen is in the same range as the decoration of the planes. This is necessary to create a soothing atmosphere. However, genuine cosiness creates lighting on bedside tables. Floor lamps and wall lamps give soft, diffusing light. But there should be a minimum number of accessories.On the table, it is possible to arrange vases or figurines of the Art Nouveau era.

Kitchen

Practical and functional style fits easily even in a small kitchen. Plain wall decoration serves only as a background, so painting is used. Glass wallpapers look somewhat better than ceramic tiles, since the sharp rectangular shapes of the latter violate the harmony of style. The ceiling coating merges with the walls using smooth transitions. Sometimes a stretch ceiling is used without an expressive texture. The floor also plays a passive role, in harmony with the furniture set. The best option is bulk floors. Solid color granite is rarely used in furniture color. Practical laminate is gaining popularity: its range allows you to choose the right shade, contrasting with the background of the planes.

Art Nouveau Kitchen

The arrangement of furniture is due to the simple geometry and asceticism of color. Her attributes are disguised as walls, and have soft contour lines. No other frills in the kitchen are allowed. In the center of the room is a massive countertop with thin legs. Do the emphasis on the table or not - the owners decide. The designer will complement their selection with classic chairs with a beautiful ornament.

Island table bar stools

Unlike other rooms, kitchen lighting has functional goals. Its placement in a furniture set fully meets the requirements of style. Sometimes, just background ceiling light is enough. If the owner chooses frameless glazing, the round shape of the window is created using rough curtains. Small accessories on the dining table should be related to the functional purpose of the room: dishes, decorative vase.

Bathroom

Two layers are used for facing this room: background and decorative. The first implies a gradation of color, and the second - an unusual texture of the decor. Ceramic tiles, staining, colored mosaic - these options are most common. Materials cover all planes.Unless the flooring can be bulk. In this case, its color scheme is characterized by a gradient: from the lightest part of the walls to the darkest.

Art Nouveau bathroom

It’s difficult to talk about the furnishings of the bathroom, because apart from the pedestal it is not always possible to place anything else here. Sometimes a chair with a cosmetic table is placed. The color of the attributes complements the flooring.

Shower and bath in one room

But the plumbing elements allow you to embody modernity in all its glory: forged, non-standard materials are selected according to the color of the finish, and are drowned in the walls. Curly heated towel rails, futuristic bathtubs decorate any room. The emphasis on asymmetry is created using spotlights and mirrors. Bathroom accessories include original glasses for toothbrushes, clothes hangers, artificial flowers.

Conclusion

Designers love to equip the Art Nouveau interior for its clear style. Contrary to its established framework, it allows you to modify the design to create a living space. Modern technologies and materials make it possible to design both an elite and a budget interior in the considered style. The influence of Art Nouveau is felt a hundred years after the decline in popularity. He is preferred by real gourmets and aesthetes.
