Corner fireplace in the interior

A fireplace today rarely acts as a heating element, as was customary in antiquity. Of course, it can be warmer and more comfortable from him, but his main goal in a private house or city apartment is decorative. The living room immediately acquires the features of luxury and nobility. Sitting at a heat source with a cup of coffee on winter evenings, and just after a busy day, you can relax and not think about anything, or just watch TV.

The assortment of modern models presents a large number of various classic and original options. One of the most popular is the corner fireplace in the interior.

Types of Fireplaces

Depending on the type of fuel, installation method, style and location of the model, there are different types: wood, gas, electric, floor, wall, straight, corner, stone, timber. There are devices that do not even need a chimney. They do not emit harmful substances into the atmosphere, although they function on the principle of live fire.

Built-in options take up little space, but the place for them should be taken into account when designing the interior, so as not to disrupt the design of the walls. If you decide to install the equipment after the repair, the best option is a wall fireplace. As for the external decoration, it can be made of stone, brick, other materials.

In addition to the above, island and corner fireplaces are popular - they organically fit into the interior, becoming its integral part.

Design and Benefits

The advantages of corner models are undeniable. The main one is significant savings in free space. Being in the corner, the fireplace does not bother anyone, and at the same time performs all its practical and decorative functions in full. A chimney in this design is located in any of the walls.

The design of corner fireplaces is very compact, they can be installed not only in a large living room, but also in rooms with a small area - for example, in a bedroom or in an office. Due to the location between the two walls, this design also heats the neighboring rooms, which is also very convenient and practical. Angular models can be symmetric and asymmetric.

Asymmetric Fireplaces

These models have a clearly rectangular shape and are mounted right in the corner. Thus, space is saved and the fireplace fits well even in the interior where such equipment is not provided. The chimney can also be easily installed in an adjacent wall.

Asymmetric corner fireplace in the interior

An asymmetric fireplace is often used as a kind of element for zoning a room. Much of the perception of the overall interior depends on the lining and the external design of the fireplace, but these are questions for professional designers. If desired, you can see the photo, choose the best option.

Symmetric Fireplaces

It is recommended to install symmetric models in rooms where there is no question of saving space. This option is mounted across the corner. From a design point of view, an angular symmetrical fireplace is better perceived visually, since fire can be seen from anywhere in the room. From the practical side, this option is also more acceptable, since the symmetric fireplace copes with the heating function a little better, unlike other models.

A corner fireplace can be either natural or purely decorative, that is, not to heat the house, but simply to give it a noble appearance. In this case, the owner of the house gets rid of the problem of installing a chimney, which significantly saves time and money.

Fireplace stove

The main function of the fireplace stove is to heat the room. Such models are stone, metal. If you plan to use the design for cooking, you should install a fireplace stove with a stove when a special cooking surface is built into the equipment. In addition, there are options with an oven, or combined models.
Of course, it is not recommended to install such stoves in the living room, even with a powerful hood, but this option is quite suitable for a large kitchen-dining room. Most modern fireplace stoves are small metal fireboxes. They have high heat dissipation and are able to heat a room with an area of up to 80-90 sq.m.

Where to install

Future fireplace owners often ask themselves: where is the best place to install a corner fireplace to make it beautiful and practical? Installation of a fireplace is carried out on an internal or external wall.If you choose the first option, there may be difficulties with installation due to the elevation of the chimney. In the second case, the installation is less problematic, but requires prior coordination with the relevant authorities.

Whatever version of fireplace you choose (except an electric fireplace), everything related to the presence of fire must be installed in accordance with the requirements of fire safety. Everything else is up to the owner. Only, it is not recommended to install a fireplace in front of windows and entrance doors, in order to avoid drafts.

If the fireplace fits snugly against the wall, take care to install a heat-resistant layer of at least 20 mm thick. Installation on a wooden floor also requires additional protection in the form of a metal sheet laid around the perimeter of the fireplace.

What corner fireplace to choose for the living room

In the living room, where there is usually enough space, it is recommended to install a luxurious symmetrical fireplace, next to which you can put a couple of beautiful armchairs, a tea table - what is not a good idea? However, temperature conditions should be provided, since there is nothing pleasant in sitting near the fireplace to feel the heat, and not pleasant heat.

When installing a fireplace in the living room, the general style of the room should be taken into account. Classics look ridiculous in combination with high-tech, just like Provence is not friends with pop art.

Brick firebox

In a country house, brick is most often used for making a firebox. It is the safest and most durable material with good heatability and high heat dissipation. Even if there is severe frost outside the windows, the brick firebox heats up quickly and retains heat in the house for a long time.

Brick is quite resistant to external influences and temperature changes, so brick fire chambers are considered reliable and durable. It does not need to be cleaned as often as, for example, cast iron. High-quality heat-resistant (chamotte) material does not emit harmful substances into the atmosphere.Installing a brick firebox requires a good separate foundation, since such a fireplace is quite heavy. The average weight is 450-500 kg, and not every base can withstand such a severity. The base is decorated with special refractory materials - for example, marble tiles.
Independently, without special knowledge, it is unlikely that it will be possible to lay out a brick firebox, therefore it is recommended to order the service of a qualified stove, who will make a fireplace in accordance with all safety rules.

Metal firebox

Many people prefer durable cast iron furnaces that can withstand extreme temperatures. Such a fireplace does not darken, does not fade over time, keeps heat for a very long time, is able to heat large areas, which significantly saves the cost of its maintenance.

A metal firebox can be bought ready-made, or assemble it with your own hands, with the involvement of specialists. A cast-iron fireplace has a lower price than a stone or brick fireplace, which is also its advantage.

The cast iron firebox cannot be drastically cooled. If you need to quickly cool such a fireplace, do not pour ice water into it.

Do it yourself

If you have sufficient skills in construction and understand the principle of operation of stoves and other heating equipment, you can build a corner fireplace with your own hands. It is difficult to say how much you will save on materials, but the work will definitely come out for free, unless, of course, you have to redo anything with the help of qualified specialists.

DIY corner fireplace

Before proceeding with the installation of the fireplace, it is important to draw up a preliminary draft in all details and carefully plan all stages of the work. Do not forget to provide good traction, the right place for the chimney, the competent location of the fireplace itself. After mounting the entire structure, it will be difficult to redo something, especially if the fireplace is built-in type.

Materials

No matter what type of fireplace you decide to stop at, a lot of materials will be needed to make it. First of all, careful waterproofing should be taken care of, which can serve as roofing material, polyethylene. It is also necessary to stock up with a sufficient amount of sand, gravel, cement, clay, which are useful for the manufacture of mortar and other construction purposes.
In the process of making a fireplace, you will need boards or metal sheets for formwork, mesh, rods for concrete reinforcement.

For the direct manufacture of a fireplace and a chimney, materials are used, depending on the type of heating equipment. It can be a brick (simple and refractory), metal parts, etc.

Training and front rows

First of all, you should take care of the foundation, which should be larger than the base of the fireplace itself. To create the foundation, you should dig a pit, then well compact the pit and fill it with wet sand. Crushed stone is poured on top, a wire-connected mesh is installed.

Mustard White Corner Fireplace

The next step is to protect the walls from overheating using special asbestos strips. After this, the formwork should be installed and all other procedures for pouring the foundation should be completed. After making the base, a technological break should be made lasting 18-20 days.

As for the rules for laying a fireplace, there are two in the corner version, one model being easier to lay and the other more complicated. A lot depends on the laying of the first row, since any error can be negatively displayed at all other stages of work. The first row sets the overall dimensions of the entire fireplace, so the thickness of the joints should be observed with maximum accuracy.

Firebox

So that the fireplace not only serves as a decoration of the room, but also gives out heat as much as possible, it is necessary to lay out the firebox correctly. At the same time, its walls should be located at a certain angle to each other - the side walls are slightly turned outward, and the back is inclined forward.

Corner fireplace on the terrace

The fireplace insert in its volume should be 1/50 of the total size of the room. It is also important to consider the depth, which must be correct. If the firebox is too deep, the fireplace will not heat up enough and the room will be cold. If, on the contrary, the depth is shallow, smoke may occur.

The furnace is closed and open type, can be whole or combined. To calculate the correct dimensions of the furnace window, the area should be divided by 50.

Hearth Design Design

Pass

In order to prevent sparks from escaping from the chimney and there are no air drops, a special threshold is set between the furnace and the smoke chamber, or a pass. It can be either tray-shaped or even. The pass should not make the pipe narrower.

Arch and chimney outlet

The arch represents the overlap of the portal, it is semicircular, arched, straight.
The chimney can be bought ready-made, but such options are usually expensive, so it’s easier to make it with your own hands from metal or brick. The walls through which the outlet of the chimney passes must be as insulated with asbestos as much as possible, and floors should also be protected.

Stone tile on the fireplace

You should not use the same chimney for different heating structures, for a fireplace it should be completely autonomous. The correct chimney height is at least 5 m, if not more. It all depends on the height of the floors of the room. The chimney is made of refractory material. The brick version can be covered with a steel pipe. The optimal form for the chimney is a cylinder. The fewer barriers to smoke, the less soot will form on the walls.

Finish

The final step in the complex process of installing a fireplace is the finishing process. Much depends on the existing style, as well as the personal tastes of the owners. Finishing is made of decorative materials, ceramics, stone, marble. For example, the fireplace itself and the chimney can be finished with stone, the upper mantelpiece can be covered with decorative plaster.

Before you start decorating, you should cover the surface of the fireplace with a reinforcing primer. To the brick planes to be finished with stone, it is necessary to attach a welded mesh with 10x10 mm cells using self-tapping screws. If necessary, the upper part of the fireplace is leveled with gypsum plaster. To strengthen the surface, a fiberglass mesh with a mesh size of 5x5 mm is used.

Mirror in the interior

Budget decor involves the manufacture of a special box of drywall with subsequent cladding.

External cladding can be very diverse, both in texture and in color. Plaster is applied to previously prepared samples of decorative materials, after which tiles are laid on the floor around the fireplace. The following fireplace trim works are done no earlier than two days later.
