Decorative fence

The design of the summer cottage includes not only the organic location of the functional areas, but also their beautiful separation. Decorative fences perfectly cope with the role of the conditional border. Paired with flower beds and garden paths, they create a neat and well-groomed composition. A decorative fence is used as a decoration of the site, and performs the function of the fence purely symbolically. It is being erected in patios, gardens, gardens and recreational areas. In quiet areas where there are no busy streets and unfamiliar passers-by nearby, you can protect your possessions along the perimeter with a decorative fence. The hedges that decorate with romantic arches or complement living plants look beautiful and delicate. We study in detail the varieties of materials to create this indispensable element in the country and we will understand its functional purpose.

Functions and application of decorative fence

With a decorative fence you can decorate home gardens or summer cottages. In cities, such a fence is set in the common courtyard by the owners of the apartments, who look after the flower beds. The fence is complemented by a white border. The finished composition has a neat appearance and suggests that people live in a high-rise building who like to surround themselves with beauty. Decorative fences are severely criticized because of the inability to become a significant obstacle to attackers. This flaw is essentially considered the only one. However, is there any point in making such requirements for the design, which is accompanied by the prefix "decorative"? Sometimes even concrete walls twice as tall as a person’s height cannot protect summer residents from intruders. For their own peace of mind, experts recommend installing a network of video cameras on the site. In addition to beauty and the addition of orderliness to the landscape composition, fence designs protect plants from attacks by animals and quick children's legs, which can level half the garden. In addition, with the help of the fence you can control the growth of plants, keeping them in the "decorative" framework. You can give a simple classification of hedges by height:

  • Low fences that outline the border between lawns and flowerbeds.
  • Designs with a height of not more than 0.5 m. They perform a protective function against pets and restless babies.
  • Towering above the ground. Only supports are dug into the ground. Such models look easy and airy.
  • Digging into the soil.If necessary, they are used to create a barrier for plants with a powerful root system.

Also, fences differ in material.

Materials for decorative fences

In fact, a decorative fence can be made from almost any material. It is enough just to connect imagination to the process and you will get the author’s design. Based on the materials of the fence, they are classified into the following types:

  • Metal. Designs are remarkable for their monumentality and long service life.
  • From wood and its derivatives. Sooner or later, the fence will become unusable, as snow and rain will provoke decay processes. Special impregnations will not significantly extend the life of the material. Derivatives of a tree mean croaker, branches, cuts, hemp.
  • Brick, stone and concrete. These designs are classified as monumental. If you choose a high-quality fastening composition, then the decorative fence can survive even the cottage itself.
  • From improvised materials. These include glass and plastic bottles, polycarbonate, old machine tires, ceramic plates and cart wheels.

Let us consider in more detail each of the materials.

Wicker fences

Previously, almost no Ukrainian court yard could do without wattle decorated with a string of cracked and jagged clay pots. A fence was in harmony with a clay hut, with small windows and a thatched roof. To make a wicker fence yourself, you will have to go to the forest for supplies of materials. For work, you will need wooden posts that will hold the entire structure, and flexible rods. It is better to cut off the latter from willow or birch, as it is difficult to break their branches, which is ideal for wattle. To build a durable structure using metal posts for the frame.

If you want to repeat the original Ukrainian fencing, it is better to still use wood. The leader among wood in terms of moisture resistance is considered larch.Water not only does not spoil it, but also tempers it. Columns at an equal distance from each other are dug into the ground. Then they proceed to the most laborious process - weaving. Purified from small twigs, vines begin to braid the frame. The first branch is let down. It is fixed with wire to the frame or lightly dug into the ground. The vines in the subsequent rows hide their tips in the previous ones. They are fixed with wire only at the places of contact with the frame.

If you do not choose from anything, then you can take the rods of maple, cherry or poplar. In terms of flexibility, they are inferior to willow and birch, but they are suitable as an alternative.

Tree

Definitely a tree is one of the most popular materials. The easiest way is to use a picket fence (boards of the same thickness). After installing the fence, they are varnished or painted in accordance with the rest of the composition. Log fences are considered more reliable and durable. They are stacked on top of each other, as in log cabins. Logs look organically in areas decorated in the traditional Russian style. Colorful and natural look hedges from croaker - the extreme boards from logs with one convex side (sometimes with the remains of the bark). Suitable option for forest and eco styles.

Stone, brick, concrete

Brick and stone, like wood, are universal materials that can be “adapted” to any exterior and landscape design. Such structures are characterized by monumentality and stability. Neither rain nor snow construction is terrible. Over time, the brick may begin to crumble, but even this problem can be easily fixed with the help of special protective corners. No special care for the fence is required. In addition to the standard brick in brown and white, you can buy a yellow or pink version. Some prefer to choose a shade to their liking and paint the finished design on their own.The paint will crack over time and the layer will have to be changed to a new one, but you can experiment with the color scheme.

When building a stone or brick fence, beginners may have problems primarily with the foundation. It should be not only stable and reliable, but also smooth, so that the whole structure does not look like an untidy homemade product. Concrete as the main material is used not so often. Fencing from it will not work to build himself. It is bought ready-made in specialized stores. Modules of the same type are molded in forms and can repeat the ornate decorative fences that decorated the property during the reign of the classics. They are decorated with stucco molding, curls, complex relief compositions, miniature columns. Concrete fences can imitate brick and masonry.

Metal and gabions

Metal structures have always been durable, but they are not eternal. Constant contact with the environment will provoke corrosion and the formation of rust on the surface of the fence. Special paint will help if not completely prevent, then at least suspend this process. On average, the life of a metal fence will be up to 40 years. Forged compositions are commonly used. The exclusive result of handmade blacksmith will cost a pretty penny. If the fence will be carried out according to the sketches of the customer, then the price will still increase one and a half times. It is easier and cheaper to buy stamping. But then do not be surprised to see similar fencing from neighbors and friends in the cottages. Metal fences splendidly decorate the garden garden area. They do not prevent the violent growth of plants, but serve as an actual barrier, through which it is not so easy to jump over. The sets look organically when the forging on the railing of the arbor echoes the ornament of the fence.

As for gabions, they were initially used for military purposes. They were baskets of metal rods that were hollow. Inside the frame, earth or stones were covered and trenches were strengthened with this structure. They perfectly protected from stray bullets. Now gabions have a less “warlike" calling. In civilian life, they decorate summer cottages. Inside the metal frames, the earth or stones (about the same size) are still covered with earth. The gabions themselves are mounted on top of each other or arranged in a “line” depending on the required height and width of the fence. This decorative element looks quite extravagant and original.

Not only fences are made up of gabions, but also terraces, porches, even stairs. It is enough to connect imagination and the stone massif can “grow” anywhere and acquire the most bizarre outlines.

Glass and plastic bottles

Plastic belongs to the cheap and sought after materials. Bottles from it are usually thrown into the bin without regrets, and yet they can be adapted to create a fence. In plastic containers, bottoms are cut off and strung in two containers on metal pins, pulling the latter through the necks. The bottles are positioned so that they touch each other with narrow ends. Then the pins are dug into the ground and a solid plastic "picket fence" is made. This option is the most primitive. To create a more complex structure, you will need a metal frame-frame with vertical rods inside. From the bottles cut off the neck in the area of their expansion. These parts of the container are strung on pins and fit tightly to each other. Then the rods are placed in a frame and fixed. A decorative fence made of plastic is ready. Some string the bottles “along” the length, and arrange the rods horizontally. More interesting are the options for decorating flower beds and plots using glass containers. It would seem that, how can such fragile material be used for such purposes? The secret of structural reliability in a bonding agent. For these purposes, use a cement mortar, which tightly fixes slender glass rows. Some craftsmen even manage to build houses from bottles, and after all, buildings have been standing for years. So, for starters, the foundation is laid on the site. After the base has dried, bottles are placed on it in a row with their bottoms in the direction that will be front. Then the first layer is cemented and the next one is laid on top. And so on until the desired height is reached.

Glass bottle fence on the plot

For those who do not want to bother with mixing cement and laying glass rows, a simpler option is suitable. It is temporary: the bottles are simply dug upside down in the ground.

Car tires

From old car tires, you can not only build swans with spread wings, but also a decorative fence. Old tires are either stacked on top of each other in a checkerboard pattern, or half-buried in the ground. If there is not enough material, then the tires are cut in half and only slightly sprinkled with earth. To make the composition look neater, black rubber is painted in suitable colors that will be in harmony with the tone picture of the site. For example, a fence protects bushes with delicate red roses, which means either white or pink shade is chosen for the fence itself. These colors accentuate the sophistication of the flowerbed.

Do-it-yourself decorative fences for flower beds

Before you begin to create a fence with your own hands, you need to make a drawing on cardboard. Think over the design features of the fence and draw a rough image of it. Then you need to make the appropriate measurements using a tape measure. Multiplying the length of the fence by its estimated height, you can approximately calculate the consumption of material and stock up on it for future use.By the way, not only bottles and tires, but also polycarbonate, any kind of plastic, ceramic tiles, pebbles, old plates and pots can act as a basis. Almost any unnecessary, but relatively durable items, which are in excess, can become the main material. Remember to use wireframes. They will be needed for flexible and pliable materials that cannot hold their own shape. When building a fence, be sure to use the level. It will help align the fence even at the construction stage and avoid getting folded structures.

Purchased Decorative Fences

In any outlet where materials for construction and repair are sold, you can purchase decorative fences. Their range is quite large, and the cost varies greatly. The price range begins with simple models of wire and plastic, and ends with handmade forged hedges. Among the variety of options, any buyer can choose a fence to his liking. You can not limit yourself to a store assortment and turn to the master with your own sketch. Custom-made work will become an exclusive complement to landscape design.

Conclusion

A plot can do without decorative fences, but it will still lose a fraction of its beauty and sophistication. Garden paths and flower beds alone to separate different areas will be clearly not enough. Such conditional boundaries need a volume supplement that will rise above the ground. Fences, painted white, organically look against the background of green lawn. Brown tones and shades of wood perfectly emphasize the beauty of any flowering bushes. Black or gray wrought iron fencing will add elegance to the site. Organically she looks in the neighborhood with figuredly trimmed trees. The constant companions of the decorative hedges are street lights that illuminate the path of late owners.Compositions from “live” arches and low fences look interesting.
