Warm and cold colors in the interior

Color is able to directly affect a person. Researches in this area have proved the possibility of the effects of the surrounding paints on the central nervous and endocrine systems. Colors can calm or excite, speed up or slow down metabolic processes. Colors in the environment have an effect on the formation of the character of children and can change the mood of any person. In psychology, there are diagnostic tests of color perception to recognize abnormalities and obtain a personality picture. In addition, psychology actively uses and develops the method of color therapy, art therapy in the treatment of certain diseases. Therefore, what colors to surround yourself in the house where you sleep, eat, relax and socialize with your family is extremely important.

When choosing a color palette, you need to rely on your own preferences, especially the colors, the purpose of the room.For example, the palette of shades for the bedroom should contribute to relaxation and good rest, for the kitchen, colors that accelerate metabolic processes are well suited.

Definition of warm and cold colors

In nature, there are three colors called primary or pure colors of the spectrum (yellow, blue, red). When mixed, many chromatic shades come out of them.

The combination of cold and warm colors in the design

Characteristic properties of chromatic colors:

  • temperature (warm, cold);
  • activity (muffled, bright);
  • intensity (diluted or saturated).

If we talk about color temperatures, yellow and red are the colors of fire and the sun, warm. The tone of the oceans and seas - blue, is cold. One color may have a different temperature, depending on which temperature range the base color (midtones or subtones) belongs to, as part of the shade. With a predominance of red or yellow halftone, the color is warm, if the blue subton prevails, it is cold. In the figure, a color wheel that clearly shows the temperature of various shades.

The combination of tones from the gamma of one temperature gives natural harmony and balance. In design in the same way you can achieve harmony, warm (or cold) tones harmoniously combine with each other in the interior. But in design this is not an axiom, the arrangement of contrasting shades in temperature, can solve many design problems.

Warm colors table

Warm colors bring warmth into the interior, warmth and create high spirits. Warm shades will add light and heat to rooms with a northern or eastern orientation, “warm” the room.

The use of cold shades is especially appropriate in bedrooms, since such tones are serene, energetically inactive, help prepare for sleep, tune in a calm mood, and relax. The tonal solution of rooms in cold colors will help to damp too bright sunlight in rooms whose windows face south and west.

Color and temperature

The tables well illustrate the conventions of the concept of color temperature. A mixture of subtones and the perception of a particular individual give a different visual perception of colors (colder / warmer).

You can determine the color temperature by decomposing it into components. To change the temperature - add uniquely warm or cold halftones.

The recognition of shades by the human eye depends on the wavelength of the spectrum, as follows:

  • long waves increase the heartbeat, blood rushes to the extremities, warmth is felt - the color is regarded as warm;
  • a short wave makes you feel relaxed, the processes in the body slow down, a feeling of coolness appears - the color is perceived as cold.

The relativity in the temperature difference in shades is associated with little experience observing absolutely pure spectral colors by most people (in nature, pure color is a rarity).

Neighboring colors mutually influence temperature. So, burgundy in tandem with sepia will give a warm feeling, with caramel - cold color. Understanding of this phenomenon should be applied in interior solutions, this will allow you to bring harmony to any space.

A color scheme

Create color balance

The fusion of colors with achromatic (black, gray, white) gives a gradation of temperatures of the final color, changes hues, tones and adds shadows. So in photography there is the concept of "white balance", which affects the illumination and the final quality of the image.

Neutral white can dilute cold or warm colors. If we add white to orange, we get a slightly colder orange. At the same time, white does not possess magic capable of making a cold color out of warm, it only brings it closer to neutral. By the same principle, a gradation of color occurs, which loses its temperature saturation when black is added.

In the interiors it is almost impossible to see pure spectral colors, they are “muffled” by gray, shaded by black or lightened by white. And of course, use multicomponent mixtures of chromatic colors.

Combination

In interior design, combining warm and cold colors is extremely important. To achieve harmony in the room, you need to choose the dominant gamut (warm or cold) and add the accents of the opposite.

You can correctly combine shades of different temperatures using other methods:

  1. Balancing.The principle of balancing one color at the expense of another has revealed to the world a popular combination of cold turquoise, warm brown and beige;
  2. Gain. An interesting option for combining colors of different temperatures is deliberate mutual amplification. So cold emerald with warm Marsala make both tones deeper and more noble.
  3. Mute, decrease saturation. The effect is achieved by using neutral colors for tinting large areas, as a background of bright colors.

Warm tones visually reduce the space, as they are perceived closer, cold tones are able to add depth, visually expand the room.

Shades of different temperatures can visually give the room the right shape. In a narrow room, long walls are tinted with cold tones, short walls are warm, so visually long walls are moved apart, and short walls are drawn closer. By painting the ceiling with cold shades, you can create the illusion of high ceilings.

In the living room

The drawing room is the central room in the dwelling, where they gather as a family, relax and have fun. In the large halls of houses, you can choose warm colors as the predominant gamut, while cold colors can be used to color accessories or choose a cold gamut for textiles. In typical apartments, the living area is usually small, you want to expand the space, here you can make a palette of cold shades dominant. Often, when designing a living room, neutral colors are used as the main color so that the room is not boring, rich colors (cold or warm, depending on the preferences of the owners) will come to the rescue.

Spacious living room

Options for non-trivial color combinations for living rooms:

  1. Gray, emerald, yellow. In general, gray is a good base color for living rooms, in this palette it can also become a base color. And several accent walls painted with warm yellow will fill the room with an atmosphere of joy, warmth and comfort. A sofa with emerald upholstery will balance the yellow walls.Emerald and gray decorative elements will help harmoniously combine interior details.
  2. White, brown, red. Combining shades only warm or cold, it is hard to make mistakes. The use of white will help to muffle active red, which in such a tandem can be used for textile elements. Brown will become an additional tone of wooden furniture in the room.
  3. Gray, blue, beige. Blue will help to relax, it is a deep and noble color, its characteristics will enhance gray. A warm shade of beige will add home comfort to the room.

These are just a few options for decorating the halls, it is worth focusing on your own preferences, temperament, size and position of the room, expectations from spending time in the living room.

In the bedroom

The bedroom is a place of rest, reboot of the whole organism, which will be facilitated by muffled, pastel inactive, neutral tones.

If there are problems with sleep, the basic color of the bedroom can be made pastel blue, it is good for calming and will give the owners a calm, restoring sleep. When combining cold blue with beige shades, you can get a harmonious and stylish room.

In order to relax, you can decorate the bedroom with ecru paints. This is a natural color, which includes yellow, beige, cream, but this shade does not imply a romantic atmosphere, so it should be diluted with decorative elements in active colors (burgundy, red in a bold combination with blue).

Choosing shades of brown to decorate the bedroom is difficult to lose, you can use brown from a warm and colder palette. If you do not add other colors, bright accents to the design, it is worth diversifying the room with textures and different materials so that the room does not become too conservative.

In the kitchen

If the kitchen has a dining area, the tones for it should contribute to arousing appetite (warm honey, tangerine, carrot, and lime tones will do just fine).

Thanks to technology, kitchen facades ceased to be made only of wood.Painted MDF, the use of multi-colored films removed all sorts of restrictions in the colors of kitchen furniture. Having chosen bright facades, walls are better to be painted in neutral shades. In the kitchen, details are of great importance, to give comfort, contrasting textiles and utensils made in shades of a different temperature than the headsets can be arranged.

If you abandon the classic wooden kitchens there is no desire. A classic wooden kitchen set in the wenge tone in tandem with a bright accent - skinali (glass aprons), blue, red. A blue Portuguese tile design for a kitchen apron will create a nice tandem with a warm, bleached oak kitchen. Many combinations of wood textures and multi-colored aprons are available.

In the nursery

The child’s gamut choice depends on the temperament of the child. For a fidget, extremely active and easily excitable, it’s good to design a room in calm cold tones using a marine theme. For a sluggish and passive child, to “stir up” the baby, you can dilute the room with bright scarlet, carrot accents (using decorations, decor, multi-colored textiles).

Children's design

Regardless of the gender of the child, it is appropriate to use shades of yellow in the nursery, which carry cheerfulness, the energy of the sun. When applying yellow, you must comply with the measure, using muted tones or limit the area of yellow surfaces. For a boy, cold emerald or azure shades can turn yellow in the children's room. In the girl’s room, yellow will be a tandem with a “cool” raspberry.

Choosing a gamut for decorating the nursery, when the child is already aware, you need to be interested in the opinion of the baby, preferences. For children, it is appropriate to choose bright, pure colors, but they definitely need to be used with basic neutral, pastel colors.

Bright accents in the children's room

In country houses on the attic floors, children's rooms are often equipped.The sloping ceiling itself can “crush”, it is worth choosing light and simple tones to design a children's space in the attic.

In bathroom

The very purpose of the bathroom is to serve cleanliness, all hygiene procedures are performed here, therefore, in choosing the palette for the design of the room, practicality comes first.
The black matte tile in the bathroom looks very impressive and stylish, but it causes problems when cleaning, this must be taken into account when making repairs. Taking a chance, you can beautifully complement the black color with warm pink and cold gray (combining tiles, using accessories, textiles)

In the restroom, you can combine tiles with painted walls, laying tiles in places where drops of water and foam are expected to fall. By painting the walls, you can experiment, for example, choose a warm olive and combine with cold graphite.

Since plumbing is most often done in white, a neutral color is already present in the bathroom to soften the brightness of almost pure colors. The option where red tiles, white plumbing and blue textiles, as well as decor elements will be combined, as well as decor elements, can turn out to be unusual and attractive.

Conclusion

Cold and warm colors are excellent in interior design. By combining them in one room, you can achieve various interesting effects, create an unusual space. You should not remain hostages to obsolete stereotypes that say that the proximity of red and blue is bad taste and bad taste, it's all about choosing a semitone and pre-laying out the palette on paper or in electronic form (this will help to understand whether the idea of combining tones is successful or whether it is worth changing the concept) .

Choosing colors for different rooms, you can be inspired by nature or by the works of eminent masters of design, remembering that a sense of proportion and style is sometimes better than excessive extravagance (an excess of red can cause aggression).The decoration of a dwelling, country house or apartment was not created to chase trends, coziness and comfort are preferable here.
