Decorative brick

The use of the usual silicate brick in construction is hardly surprising. However, recently a new finishing material is widely used - decorative brick. Skillfully executed fragmentary masonry transforms the design of the home, creating the atmosphere of a New York loft, a village house, Old Russian princely chambers or a medieval castle.

Types of decorative bricks

Decorative brick is a kind of symbiosis of artificial stone with tiles. Different types of this finishing material are known: on the basis of cement, gypsum, clay, etc. The area of use of the finish is very wide: from corridors, kitchens and living rooms to offices, from exhibition to storage rooms. The difference between decorative brick and artificial stone is that the latter has a relief surface. The shape of the brick is rectangular. Rounding of corners is allowed. Many manufacturing companies, taking into account the particular styles where this material can be applied, produce artificially aged cladding. Consider its main varieties.

Clinker

This type of decorative brick is the most expensive. Clinker coating is made of clay. Thanks to special firing technology, the material acquires special strength and hardness. Firing helps to obtain a diverse and completely unique color palette. The outer surface of the clinker brick is smooth. This finish is equally suitable for interior and exterior cladding. Due to the fact that the clinker tolerates temperature extremes, it is used to decorate corridors, the front of buildings, the fireplace zone and chimneys. Clinker brick cladding unit size:

  • Width - 160-190 mm;
  • Height - 60 mm;
  • Thickness 20 ± 5 mm.

In addition to flat tiles, they also produce corner tiles.

Gypsum and cement based bricks

The principle of manufacturing the finishing material is as follows. The prepared solution is poured into molds. After the mixture is fully set, it is released from the mold and dried. In essence, the technology is the same as in the manufacture of decorative stone, but the individual elements resemble brick in size and shape. The gypsum-based finish is not moisture resistant. It is used in dry rooms.The strength of cement-based products is much higher. They can be used for outdoor applications and in wet rooms. Brick, obtained by manual molding, has a relief or simply rough surface.

The basics of the right choice

When choosing a finishing material, you need to pay attention to what kind of material is at the base:

  • Decorative artificial gypsum bricks absorb water, so it is not recommended for wet rooms.
  • Ceramic brick is universal, therefore it is suitable for any room, including for finishing fireplaces and stoves.
  • Cement cladding is equally suitable for exterior and interior decoration.

Such an accent wall can serve as an excellent backdrop for hosting a large TV, unusual panels, futuristic paintings and designer furniture.

Dining room, kitchen

Here, in addition to the aesthetic appearance, such a property of the coating as strength and practicality is exploited. A kitchen apron made of decorative brick tolerates humidity and temperature changes well, it is easy to wash. Over time, it does not lose its original attractiveness. Brick looks good in modern and classic styles.

Bedroom

Designers recommend using this material in the bedroom interior in a dosed, small amount (for example, to highlight openings of windows and doors, design an accent wall at the head of the head or opposite it). It can be a brutal interior-loft or charming eclecticism, a game in contrasts. In this case, a rough brick contrasts with elegant furniture and delicate textile curtains and bedspreads.

Styles suitable for masonry

First of all, brick cladding is associated with the "loft" style. Currently, the industrial style or imitation of bohemian housing moved to ordinary apartments. Imitation of masonry made of aged brick can be used as an interior accent, to highlight the area behind a bed or sofa, decorate niches, etc.

Another style that allows the use of bare brick is the country, creating the atmosphere of a hunting hut, a cottage in the country or familiar to everyone from the advertising "house in the village." Particularly interesting and functional is the bricked area of the stove or fireplace.The combination of the “untreated” surface with natural wood and textile elements from shreds and the “grandmother's” cotton screen has a peculiar charm.

The material has found application in interiors made in the styles of “Gothic” and “Neo-Gothic”. They reproduce the atmosphere of feudal castles with numerous columns and lancet arches. For their design, imitation of brick fits perfectly. A chic chandelier with numerous crystal pendants or a giant four-poster bed creates a magnificent contrast with the ascetic brick.

By the way, about asceticism. Facing with decorative brick is in perfect harmony with the elements of minimalism. The combination of brick of red, egg, brown or terracotta shade with furniture of neutral colors is especially beautiful.

How to choose a brick for interior decoration

The most important selection criterion is the aesthetic qualities of the material, its compliance with the chosen style. An exclusive, truly unique atmosphere can only be created with a brick that perfectly matches the design of the room. Be sure to ask about the consumer properties of the material, its technical characteristics. Do not be afraid to experiment with design. The properties of the decorative finish are such that the non-standard decoration is guaranteed to you.

DIY bricks

It is not necessary to use natural brick in the interior. If you want to revet the room with material with an unusual and rough texture, you can use its imitation. Consider various manufacturing options.

From plaster

Gypsum is a plastic material that perfectly imitates the texture of natural brick. If you try, the lining will be indistinguishable from natural. For its independent manufacture, you will need such materials:

  • Gypsum mixture - dry;
  • Mold for bricks;
  • Glue for a tile;
  • Water;
  • Notched trowel;
  • Moistened foam sponge.

Creative interior

Dry gypsum mixture, glue and water are mixed to obtain a mass that looks like sour cream. The prepared composition is poured into molds. Gypsum hardens very quickly, so do not need to do too much mortar.

To evenly distribute the solution, shake the mold slightly.

You can add acrylic paint to the solution or paint the “masonry” after it is glued to the wall. At will, the space between the "bricks" is stained with dark paint.

Cement decorative brick

Made of cement

To make a decorative cement brick with your own hands, you need to prepare:

  • Portland cement is white;
  • Sand;
  • Cardboard;
  • Foam balls (you can buy them at a furniture store);
  • Reinforcing mesh;
  • Sealant on cement.

The tray form for bricks can be made of cardboard. The bottom and its walls are laid out with a reinforcing mesh. To prepare the solution, sand, foam and water are mixed in a ratio of 1: 1: 2. Then Portland cement is poured into a solution with a consistency of sour cream. The working composition is kept for 20 minutes. The viscous mass is laid into molds manually, leveled and left to harden for a day. After solidification, they are coated with a solution for smoothness (in 3 parts of water, 1 part of Portland cement and sand). Acrylic dye diluted with water is used for staining. First, the cladding is tinted with a darker tone, then covered with a transparent layer of light paint.

From clay and granite chips

Clay is the main raw material for the manufacture of ceramics. To obtain a solid brick imitation, clay is mixed with granite chips. Molded cladding elements are fired in special furnaces at high temperatures. At home, this is very difficult to achieve. This is exactly the case when you should not try to do something yourself, but buy products from respectable manufacturing companies.

other methods

To finish the walls "under the brick" can be in other ways.Some firms make the finish of MDF and polyvinyl chloride. The peculiarity of these materials is that they are mounted not by separate elements, but by large panels. Installation is made on a crate made of wood or metal. Such a finish will be much cheaper than facing in the classic version.

Laying decorative bricks

This process cannot be called too complicated. Special equipment for work is not required. To clad walls, you will need only the following tools and devices:

  • Building tape measure, ruler, level;
  • Pencil - for marking;
  • Hand saw;
  • Brush;
  • Rope;
  • Brush;
  • Putty knife;
  • Skin for stripping pieces of brick.

Depending on the place of facing, apply angular or planar elements. The use of "corners" gives the impression of a solid, solid, natural masonry. The number of square meters of material to be purchased is calculated based on the planned cladding area.

Stylish decor in brick shape

Preliminary stage

You need to glue the decorative brick on a solid, well-cleaned base from the old coating. The wall and brick on the back side are pre-treated with a deep penetrating primer. Before lining the wall, the bricks are removed from the packaging and laid out on a flat surface in order to carefully select the elements according to the shade, texture and thickness. The next step is to mark the surface horizontally. This is necessary for the correct fit to the size of the joined elements. This will save materials and reduce the number of sawn elements. Begin lining with corner "bricks", provided that they are, alternating short sides with long ones. When mounting without jointing, vertical joints are offset by at least 50 mm.

Installation procedure

Using a spatula, the adhesive solution is applied to the surface of the wall, trying to fill the composition with all the bumps. Glue is also applied to the entire lower surface of the cladding element with a layer thickness of 1-3 mm.The brick is pressed against the surface of the wall, slightly moving it from side to side. This is necessary in order to provide better grip on the wall. The solution should be plastic, but not liquid. If the stone slides strongly, it will not be possible to achieve a firm fit to the surface.

The selection of individual elements by color is an individual creative process, and there is no clear standard here. It is advisable to use "bricks" from different packages. If necessary, file the stone with a hacksaw with small teeth. A fine fit is obtained well with emery coarse paper.

Conclusion

The brick looks beautiful and unusual in the interior. However, the heavyweight “global” masonry will hardly look beautiful. Therefore, it is necessary to use the decoration with decorative bricks in the decoration of rooms in a dosed manner, “without fanaticism”, to decorate the room, for arranging color and textured accents.
