Wallpaper under a brick in an interior

Brick was used in construction since ancient Egypt. The material was little like modern counterparts. From the clumps of clay that were collected into lumps, they formed blocks of approximately the same size. At first, raw brick was used, which was dried in the sun and was afraid of moisture, so the structures from it could not be called durable. Then, the building material began to be fired, which significantly increased its service life. The ruins of the famous Tower of Babel (one of the seven wonders of the world) are the remains of brickwork, fragments of which have retained their shape to this day. Ancient Russia was introduced to the material by the Byzantines. Each bar in those days was made manually, so only wealthy people could build from it. The poor had to be content with more affordable wood and stone. Gradually, production became mechanized, therefore, product prices decreased.

Nowadays, brick is one of the most affordable and reliable materials, which, unfortunately, can not withstand competition with foam, gas, and reinforced concrete. The latter provided the opportunity to build skyscrapers and skyscrapers in cities. Brickwork has always been an element of the exterior. In the interior, they preferred to plaster and finish it to hide the unsightly appearance of the walls. That was until the industrial style or loft became popular in the USA. This trend actively promoted the use of careless, as if "incomplete" elements and surfaces. The bare brick wall began to be considered a fashionable accent in the design of the interior of a house or apartment. However, even here, natural material was replaced by its imitation. Artificial or decorative brick, which is lighter and cheaper than the original, is used everywhere in those apartments where the loft has to be “squeezed” into the tight budget. Monumentality of such a coating is not different. For simpler interiors, they began to make wallpaper under a brick. On a thin surface, masonry with all its natural defects and roughness is reliably depicted.

Masonry wallpaper: advantages over a natural brick wall

Wallpaper compares favorably with natural brick not only in value. Among the advantages of the material can be noted:

  • Breathability. Walls papered with wallpaper “breathe”;
  • Easy to create angles. The material bends around any surface, and real bricks can ugly appear;
  • A variety of textures and colors. Standard brick is brown or white.In order for the wall to match the design picture, the masonry would have to be painted in the right shade. Wallpaper saves you from this extra work;
  • Lightweight material and the ability to "lay down" on any surface: from plaster to a concrete wall;
  • A simple procedure for decorating the wall. Neither cement mortar, nor a team of workers in the kit for it will be needed for repair. It is easy to depict the popular “torn” edge technique using scissors, having previously trimmed the edges of the roll with them;
  • Convenience when replacing. The old coating can be torn off if necessary and re-glued with another material, which allows you to change the wall finish in one to two days.

In addition, the range of materials is designed for use in different rooms. For example, wallpaper with a special coating will fit perfectly into the interior of the kitchen or bathroom.

From natural brick at any intensity of the heating system will “pull” the cold. This is inevitable for unprocessed material, which is valued precisely for its unusual, natural look. With wallpaper, such a problem does not arise at all.

Types of Wallpaper

Regardless of the texture on the surface, the wallpaper is classified into types according to the type of material:

  • Paper. The cheapest and “flimsy” wallpapers. Scuffs quickly form on them, so the service life does not exceed 4-5 years. It is not recommended to paste paper over kitchens and bathrooms. They are completely not designed for their microclimate. Suitable for halls, bedrooms, corridors and children's rooms. In rooms for rest material is appreciated because of its undeniable environmental friendliness and safety.
  • Non-woven. The material is light and breathes after finishing. Flizelin does not swell when wet and does not shrink after drying. Unfortunately, like paper wallpapers, non-woven ones will not last long.
  • Acrylic Foamed acrylic is applied on a paper or non-woven base using the dot technique. Its layer “breathes”, and provides a long service life of the material.
  • Fabric.The finish looks impressive and rich, but textiles will require constant care, as it collects dust. Wallpapers do not combine with kitchens.
  • Vinyl. Perhaps the most popular option recently. A layer of foamed vinyl is applied to the base. In the market of finishing materials they offer options with a relief and smooth surface. The vinyl layer provides “long life” wallpaper. The material can be used in the decoration of the kitchen.
  • Metallized. The top layer of wallpaper is covered with a special kind of foil. The material looks elegant and expensive. Drawings of bricks rarely imitate, since floral ornaments look more impressive on such a surface.
  • Natural. An elegant option for luxury apartments. The material is classified as “not everyone can afford it”, but the cost pays off with the beauty of the coating. Usually they decorate only one accent area. Due to the thickness of the rolls on the wall, joints will be clearly visible. Cork and bamboo wallpapers are more common. The material is difficult to install. An exotic option would be wallpaper woven from straw and reeds using the "mat" technique.
  • Photowall-paper. As a rule, paintings or panoramas are depicted on their surface, rather than a repeating pattern. Relevant options that mimic the "old" walls, where the masonry is combined with crumbling plaster. Wall murals are distinguished by high detail and, accordingly, the realism of the depicted paintings.

Of all the above types, vinyl wallpaper is most in demand. They meet quality standards and will delight the eye for more than one year.

Let's dwell on the styles in more detail.

The first direction that comes to mind when mentioning brick wallpaper is, of course, a loft. A noble, industrial style that has become more elegant and graceful than its industrial predecessor. In rooms decorated according to the canons of this direction, a brick wall is considered an obligatory element.The accent zone, which has transformed from an "uncouth" surface into an exquisite interior detail. If the brick is painted in gray, white or black, then its use is acceptable and modern hi-tech. Accent wall favorably emphasize chrome surfaces and the "gloss" of the room. The Scandinavian style, from which the northern “cold” blows, also calmly refers to such decisions. Again, the color of the wallpaper matters, it is better to stop the choice on white. Neo-Gothic and Gothic are distinguished by the gloominess of the interiors, which is emphasized by the surface with imitation of brick in its natural form: with sprinkled corners and “scars” of cement mortar. In minimalism, light wallpapers with embossed texture will dilute the plain decoration of the room, which may seem unnecessarily boring.

Ethnic style, as you know, will endure everything, so wallpaper under a brick will be in harmony with the unusual decor of the room.

Color schemes

As for the color scheme, modern wallpapers can be made in almost any shade: from acid green to purple. Similar options are suitable for extravagant styles, where bright colors look appropriate. It is worth noting that such catchy walls are combined with a minimum of decor, as the abundance of accents will negatively affect the perception of the interior. Natural options with a laying of brown, white, gray or black colors are more relevant. The “brick” wall is unusual in itself, so experimenting with shades is best left for the rest of the decorative elements. Also, the material can be divided into two categories:

  • Imitating "fresh" laying;
  • The surface texture follows the pattern of an old wall.

Do not forget about the standard color scheme for rooms with different dimensions. In small ones, light shades are always used, and in large ones, you can also resort to dark ones.

Choice of texture and design

According to the invoice, the material is divided into two types:

  • Smooth. No different from classic wallpapers;
  • Embossed.Running your hand over the surface, you can feel the “roughness” of the brick and indentations under the fingers at the joints where the cement should be in the original.

Smooth wallpapers can be matte or glossy. The “varnished” shine of the latter will immediately give an imitation, so consider this nuance when creating interiors in the loft style, which still prefers natural bricks. Also on the wallpaper can be depicted elements of small and large fractions. It is not recommended to use material with small bricks in cramped rooms, such details will load the space.

Interior design options

"Brick" wallpaper are versatile. If you choose the right base material, then the coating can be used to decorate any room. Properly beaten effect produced by the surface of the wallpaper will be the main emphasis in the room. At the same time, it does not matter at all whether the walls or their small sections, niches, ledges will be pasted over with them.

In the hall

In the hallway, brick wall with imitation of torn edges is usually papered over the wall at the front door. Typical rooms do not differ in large dimensions; therefore, they are not advised to overdo with textured, dark surfaces. You can paste a light "brick" on one of the long walls of the corridor. A spectacular addition will be a collage of black and white photographs of the same size, which are hung in a row. The remaining walls are finished with light stucco, the uniformity and simplicity of which will emphasize the “brick” accent.

In the living room

In the living room, with the help of an accent “brick” wall, a separate zone can be distinguished: a reading corner or a workplace. The actual use of such wallpaper in combined rooms, as a delineation of two spaces. They usually paste plasterboard partitions with decorative niches. Do not forget about the lighting, which will make a simple "brick" wall an effective zone in the room.

In the kitchen

In the kitchen, usually an apron or a wall is decorated with a wallpaper “brick”, near which there is a dining area. It should be borne in mind that the natural "red" color will not cause appetite, so it is better to use light shades. In spacious kitchens, dark wallpapers on the wall with windows that are pasted over at the edges will become a stylish solution. The openings are hung with monophonic curtains without patterns, emphasizing the sophistication and severity of the interior.

In the bedroom

In bedrooms, the accent wall is usually located at the head of the bed. Exceptions may be extended rooms in which the bed is placed in the far corner. The decor of the bedroom should be conducive to rest, sleep, peace. In order not to disturb the harmony of the atmosphere, avoid using wallpaper that mimics a rough, dark brick. Soft, pastel shades of the material will help create a feeling of lightness in the interior. The bricks should also be neat, without obvious signs of “destruction”. The latter is relevant only in styles that support the impression of exquisite antiquity. Their striking example is Provence, but it prefers a crudely painted white wood.

In the nursery

Brick wallpaper is often used to decorate teenage bedrooms. As a rule, at this age, children (especially boys) crave brutal interiors with a challenge. Teenagers will appreciate the room in the Gothic style or an ultra-modern loft. The latter will cause persistent associations with the atmosphere of trendy cafes and music bars, which will be another “plus” in the piggy bank style. For girls, it is recommended to choose a more romantic option, where the wallpaper will be painted in delicate colors: peach, pink, white.

Conclusion

In modern styles, natural surfaces are skillfully combined with the simplicity of the interior. In the perception of man over the past decades, the concept of “beautiful” has changed and turned upside down.Therefore, what they tried to hide and close before, is now paraded as a vivid example of non-standard solutions that have become fashionable. Masonry was no exception. Previously, this material was considered "draft", for decoration they used more beautiful and neat wallpapers, plaster, paint, wood. Now the brick is so popular that those who do not have the ability to "cement" their walls literally resort to its imitations. Keep in mind that the texture of the surface has the property of “crushing” the room (the exception is only white and gray), so you should not paste over the whole room with such fights. The interior will look tasteless and ugly. Accent walls are ideal brick areas in rooms.
