Sliding interior doors

Sliding doors

The entrance to the building or living space is emphasized by any architectural feature. Doors, for example, are supplemented with frames and platbands, decorative devices. A new look at ergonomics provides for the abandonment of conventional swing structures and the transition to sliding (retractable). The second format gives more options in matters of aesthetics and mechanics. Sliding door systems took "their place" in modern architecture and somewhere completely replaced traditional ones. There is no alternative to automatic sliding doors in public buildings, skyscrapers, at points with high traffic. In a design with a panoramic view, dimensional moving canvases are also stylized elements around which the interior is formed. The design of sliding doors has a great future, because projects are constantly evolving.

Features

The sliding principle in the arrangement of doors appeared earlier than the middle of the 20th century, and more primitive designs existed even five hundred years ago in the countries of East Asia. The development of constructivism in the 70s led to the fact that recoil systems became a popular element in everyday life. Like ordinary doors, sliding doors consist of sashes and frames, however, their structure also has guides, and sometimes a cassette. Cloths are installed in wide openings, if necessary, make recesses in the walls. In addition to interior rooms, entrance systems and options for balconies / terraces are also popular. The method of opening corresponds to the types of compounds. The sliding principle of compartment doors preserves the space near the opening, leaves moves for the design component. Sliding doors are usually a combination of two or more wings, but there are single options.

Advantages and disadvantages

Sliding constructions have become widespread due to ergonomics, whether it is interior, entrance doors or cabinet doors. Consumers can conveniently move around, store things closer to the aisle. Designers use sliding devices to create an attractive interior. The relevance of a particular form or system is determined by the interior, and even in an expensive classic setting they are somehow combined with a common background. Sashes do not sag at such doors. There are also many weaknesses. The low tightness of the structures is basically corrected, but additional fittings will be needed. The problem is also the noise level.The flaps themselves make loud noises when moving, and overall acoustic pollution rises due to the loose connection of the canvases. The unpleasant moment is sometimes the price, because a simple system is much cheaper and has its advantages. One of the main drawbacks of sliding doors should be considered a large load on the hands with frequent use.

Types of mechanisms

Options for the mechanism:

  1. Folding (accordions) - accordions and books.
  2. Coupe - the canvas is moved along parallel guides.
  3. Cases (cassette) - the frame is mounted in the thickness of the wall.
  4. Gantry - often used as panoramic.
  5. Radial semicircular - have the form of a half circle or a little more / less.
  6. Intra-openings - the movement of the wings is limited by the opening.

Gantry Sliding Doors

The first type of mechanism is characterized by a large number of fasteners. The shutters in it are bent relative to each other, and the space occupied by them can be reduced several times. In coupe-type systems, the canvases change sides and leave far more options than simply opening and closing. Cassette models in most cases lack such capabilities. They are two moving parts that connect in the central part of the passage and hide in niches in the open position. Cassettes provide the doors with smooth movement and greater stability. Intra-cavity options limit piers. Semicircular models, in turn, are set when other solutions are unavailable or based on the design component. Portal options are classic large systems, usually with wide flaps and on large openings.

Harmonic

Folding options are single and double-sided, and each part has a minimum of 2 wings. Models with no more than two folding elements are also called “books”. The accordion pitch starts from 15 cm and reaches 1 m.The canvas is usually folded on one of the sides, and if the mechanism allows, then it is assembled into a compact group in the middle of the opening or moved to the opposite edge. If there are two paintings, then tenants are deprived of such opportunities, but the ease of movement will be higher. A feature of all accordion designs is their versatility: they are suitable for openings of any configuration. The disadvantage is the heavy load on the hardware, which means a limitation for places with high traffic. In contrast, the doors are easily fixed and do not slam due to drafts. In addition to the function of the door leaf, the design is used as a screen-partition.

Coupe

Doors with a compartment configuration were used in the construction of cabinets, but then they increasingly began to appear on doorways. Sliding doors in most cases consist of 2 or 3 wings. Large models have 4, 5 and even 6 door leafs. Usually all of them are movable and move freely along the entire length of the structure, go behind each other due to the fact that they move along different guides. The number of slats in this case is 2 or 3, and all of them are either at the bottom or on top and on the floor will be 2 or 3. The compartment models are installed on the aisles of any width. High-quality sliding models such as coupes easily move along rails and make little noise. The operation of the sliding system is the main selection criterion, so there are many options for roller elements and guides. In one of the strips usually put a limiter.

Pencil case

A cassette (pencil case) is a mechanism of several sections for the movement of paintings and hiding parts of accessories. The metal frame is built into a niche in the aisle - thanks to it, the movement occurs along an ideally smooth path. In this sense, the function is performed by centered tracks. As a material, in turn, aluminum and steel are used.The rail is usually mounted on top, so it is better for the structure as a whole and for the aesthetics of the passage, although the lower rail can be mounted on the floor. From pencil cases use from 2 to 4 roller carriages. Pick up those that can withstand even a 100-pound canvas. With cartridges apply stoppers and flags. The former are mounted along the edges of the guides, and the latter serve as a stop for the sash in the lower part of the structure. 2 additional elements are also used:

  1. Closer - to soften the movement.
  2. Clamp - provides simultaneous movement of the wings.

Gantry

Variants consist of 2 wings, moving into open space. Sometimes this is what all sliding doors are called in principle. Popular models are made of plastic and glass. Designs are installed on the central entrances of public institutions. In private houses, the doors are placed on the front side. The standard design is 4 or 6 leaves, of which 2 move, and the rest are usually deaf. At the same time, for the arrangement of access to the garden, just the same moving options are suitable. Designs are divided into 3 main varieties. The first of them, the patio has a single movable sash of two with a weight of not more than 100 kg. Common Portal (HS) is a traditional pair of movable flaps with a total weight of up to 160 kg. Portal Accordion (FS) - more than two series-connected wings, each of which weighs within 80 kg. Various portal designs reach 10 meters in length and more. They are installed in halls, halls and large living rooms.

Gantry Sliding Doors

Radial semicircular

For round and oval living rooms and dressing rooms, special designs are selected. Systems are convex, concave, and combined. The first option is used mainly for hallways, wardrobes and bathrooms. Concave and combined look better in kitchens and in bedrooms. Doors of radial systems move smoothly and without sound.For normal operation, there are enough 4 wings with a width of more than 1 meter, sometimes 3. The difference from the usual rounded options is the high severity of the form. Lightly rounded systems are not considered radial. Radius models adorn the interior and facades. They are often used as an input element to the building - in office and shopping centers, hotels. In this case, automation works, and the design itself does not receive a semicircular, but a perfectly round shape. Prices for radius models are much higher than for other modifications.

Semicircular Sliding Doors

Intracavity

The devices perform functions within a single opening, and their movement is limited by these piers. Thus, the design can fully match the compartment. There are usually two rails, as well as in the compartment doors. With one blind leaf, a single rail is also possible. Half the aisle is left even more often, but for a “maneuver” it is better to fix a fixed canvas within another bar so that if necessary, change the wings. Recently, upper sliding systems are more popular: a uniform coating at the bottom looks neater and more attractive. Intra-door systems are performed in several versions. In addition to the described, such are structures with two fixed sashes on the sides and two moving. Additional options include the exit of moving elements behind the opening, and such solutions are suitable for rarely used rooms.

Web material

The following materials are used in the manufacture of sliding doors:

  1. Tree;
  2. Plywood;
  3. Chipboard;
  4. Fiberboard;
  5. Metal;
  6. Glass;
  7. Plastic.

Wooden sliding doors

Most often, a tree is chosen: such a traditional advantage over other options remains to this day. The advantage of these designs is variability. Models are very different from each other, there are many ordinary and complex design options.Wood will be the best raw material for self-preparation and installation of the structure. Metal canvases are the boldest decision, as you have to subtly adapt to the interior. Glass, in turn, combine with any decor, but they are generally cheaper than "competitors". Iron aluminum and other structures will be needed for rooms whose contents are of high value to the tenant. Then any decorative option will give a lot of practical benefit. Metal doors are equipped with layers of fittings so that they do not make a lot of noise during operation.

In no case should you save on accessories: the more expensive it is, the better!

Tree

Wood remains a classic material for doors, including sliding. Popular options are MDF, particleboard, solid wood and plywood. Particleboard is not suitable for installation in the nursery because of its volatile resins that can harm young children. If installation is carried out using an old door, then open edges will need to be finished with veneer or PVC film. In MDF, wood particles are connected by lignin or paraffin, so security is higher, and the edges can be curly. Raw materials are used as a single leaf or as part of a curly frame. The original decoration will be a canvas made of solid wood. Its processing is associated with great difficulties, so the price will be appropriate. The last option, plywood is glued sheets. The material is easy to process, inexpensive and with proper processing takes on a beautiful look. The surface of the plywood is usually laminated.

Metal

Metal doors are suitable for a modern technological interior. The first task for the manufacturer is to facilitate the design, the movement should be easy. Metal sliding flaps have a significant advantage: all parts are precisely tailored to each other and are usually manufactured at the same factory.Moreover, faking metal sashes is almost impossible. Cloths made of aluminum or steel provide reliable sound insulation. Sound propagation is fought with the help of a hollow space inside a door or multi-chamber double-glazed windows. A metal door gives more protection against burglary. It will not be possible to drill the blade with additional stiffeners. Metal structures also provide thermal insulation. In addition, the roll-out structure will cost less than the rest. Other benefits:

  • resistance to fire;
  • strength;
  • durability.

Glass

Transparent glass paintings come with or without a frame. Moreover, a more attractive second option will cost even less. In general, the price of products should be included in the asset, because wood costs much more, and metal by this criterion is approximately the same. At the same time, glass canvases are tempered, but still weigh less than wooden and metal counterparts. The rooms with glass structures look visually larger, and several additional transparent paintings enhance the effect in the interior that is designed for them. The solution is definitely suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, showers and toilets - even if there is no desire to install them as the main option in the bedroom or living room. Glass compartment doors let in a lot of light and will be appropriate in rooms on the cold north side. It is worth noting the inconvenience of transparent doors in terms of visual access from the outside. The problem is solved simply: you just need to find an option with a wiped surface or different sides, of which the external will be mirrored.

Dimensions

The standard height / width value is 2000 × 700 mm. The doorway width standard is 680, 780 and 880 mm, and sliding segments with values of 700, 800 and 900 mm respectively correspond to it. The height of the aisles ranges from 2000 to 2100 mm: usually 2000, 2010 or 2060 mm.The parameters of the sliding segments in height are equal to those of 1976 and 2076 mm. For large openings with a width of 1145-1745 mm, structures of at least two sliding elements are made. If the gap is even wider, then at least 3 segments will be needed. The width of each of the moving elements is selected in the corridor between 600 and 900 mm. Cloths that move along the wall should be at least 20 mm wider than the doorway. For flaps with an entrance to a niche, a margin of width of at least 100 mm is left. The number of segments for the opening not wider than 1145 mm should not be more than 7.

Color

According to unspoken canons, the color of the door leaf should contrast with the general gamut. In an expensive interior with classic forms, as well as in conceptual studio apartments, they sometimes make an exception. The contrast itself does not imply a significant difference between the shades, only two or three tones of the difference in lightness are enough. Harmony and consistency with interior items is also important. In an ideal situation, the colors of the furniture and doors match or are nearby in an imaginary circle of colors. Manufacturers rarely produce original tint combinations or bright solid options. Usually they stop at the classics: gray, white, cream, metal, light and dark brown. Original products of green, blue, red and other chromatic colors will have to be ordered in a separate order. The shade depends on the material itself, and manufacturers simply treat the surface with colorless formulations or films.

Styles and Design

Doors with a sliding mechanism combine with the decor in modern styles, as well as with traditional Japanese, Korean, Chinese and other areas originally from East Asia. Technological and minimalist interiors act as a natural environment, as their concept welcomes various mechanical features.The same should be said about the direction of functionalism, where every square meter is important. The variability of the sliding canvases is expressed in the uniform and constructive variety that allows you to experiment with design. Recently, enlarged flaps have become popular, which simply cover the doorway and move mainly due to the upper guide. The height of the options sometimes reaches the ceiling. Sliding canvases are used in panoramic designs, which in the vast majority of cases are glazed. Thanks to the sliding doors you can reproduce the situation like a hopper.

DIY sliding doors

Retractable construction can be done independently. To do this, simply remove the old swing door and redo it according to the new principle of opening. First of all, wooden sashes are suitable. First dismantle the canvas itself. After they remove the door handle, lock, fasteners, which connect the door to hinges or awnings. The remaining grooves will have to be removed. The necessary sections of the canvas are restored and traces with a different shade are removed. In this sense, the usual material will help - putty on wood. It is stained with a dye for tinting water-based compositions - if the doors are veneered or laminated. On other types of coating, unpainted raw materials are applied, after which they proceed to cleaning the putty and subsequent painting of the entire canvas. Putty can be prepared on the basis of varnish. Then the restored areas will gain shine. Then, at the ends of the door, lower, upper, or both, grooves are cut out. The slots are formed using a manual milling cutter.

For self-preparation of varnish-based putties, the varnish itself and dust shredded into dust are added to the mixture.

Self-installation of a sliding door

Simple elements for sliding mechanisms are sold in any building hypermarket.For self-assembly, it is better to resort to the following configuration: lower guides, rollers for the lower bar, groove on the upper end for emphasis. There is one optimal sequence of work. First of all, we install the rollers. We screw them with an interval of 50 mm from the edges, and we select the pitch at the level of 150 mm. We mount the guides after we attach all the wheels: it is better to choose a configuration from the two lower ones, but if there is only one leaf, then you need one rail and a niche. In a narrow opening, the latter option will be optimal. We select a rail so that it does not have to drill a channel in the floor. So, we attach it to the floor and install the door. We start it on the side of the bar, gradually aligning with it. The material is calculated by adding the dimensions of the sash with rollers and the gaps under it.

Recommendations of specialists for choice

First of all, pay attention to weight and size - technical parameters. The right mounts and the right amount of fragments and wheels are selected. The next item is branded mechanisms. The high cost of guides and rollers positively “affects” the life of the machine.

Choosing a sliding door for the interior

You should abandon the cheap fittings, including handles, locks and all other details. The possibility of saving is manifested in the choice of a simple design without glass and top rails, the need for additional processing of the place. The transparency of the canvas is useful if the room is dark or, on the contrary, is filled with mirrors and glass. The issue of sound insulation is given maximum attention. Pine canvases are avoided, as the material is worse than the others in this sense. Soundproofing device should not interfere with other qualities of the door and its correct operation. After taking into account the above, it remains only to choose the ideal material, although its selection is closely related to the indicated nuances.

Conclusion

Sliding doors are in demand among modern consumers, and from year to year their popularity is only growing.This can be explained not only by trends and the desire to keep up with fashion. Firstly, the structural features of the sliding models provide opportunities for storing things nearby. Secondly, in some places sliding systems turn out to be no alternative solution. The rest of the space can already be coordinated with them and performed in the same spirit. Designs with cassettes are installed with a large number of manipulations, but even in this case, much can be done by yourself, for example, to prepare the sash. The savings will be serious given how dramatic changes will occur. Store options sometimes cost less than some swing structures - a powerful argument for the finished product. Buyers should look at the quality of the hardware and its suitability for individual types of doors. If everything is in order, then a low price is not an indicator.
