How to make a ottoman with your own hands: 7 step-by-step master classes

Types of ottomans

The ottoman is a nice and functional element of the interior. It perfectly complements the furniture composition, creates a stylish space and brings special cosiness to the room. The ottoman easily copes with the various roles that it has to fulfill. It can act as a chair or bench, footrest, storage space. If you want to make the room cute and cozy, the ottoman is exactly the thing that will help you easily cope with this task. And if your budget does not provide for such expenses, but you really want to get a comfortable seat, build a ottoman with your own hands using simple improvised means.

Types of poufs

Poufs make the interior noble, elegant and comfortable. There are many varieties of this item. The main representatives of this furniture group are square or round products with a rigid frame, bean bags, banquets, structures with storage space, hollow inside, with a drawer.

There are three main classifications of ottomans. They can be divided into groups, focusing on the material of manufacture, design features, functionality.

By design, ottomans can be:

  • with an open frame - they look like a mini-bench;
  • with a closed frame;
  • inflatable;
  • frameless.

Poufs with an open frame can be attributed to the budget options. They resemble miniature chairs or stools. The base is made of metal or wood. A soft seat is installed on top.

Closed poufs are upholstered with fabric or leather on all sides. They can be equipped with small legs with a height of 5-7 cm. As an alternative to the legs, wheels often act, which will allow you to easily move the product from one end of the room to the other, without special effort, and also to neighboring rooms. Mobility is the most important and significant characteristic of ottomans.

Particularly popular are products in which the frame is completely absent. These are the so-called poufs - bags. They can be triangular, round, rectangular or pear-shaped. As a filling, polystyrene balls are used. Thanks to them, the chair is able to take the shape of the body of a person sitting in it. This allows you to relax and rest.

For the manufacture of inflatable poufs, a dense fabric and a chamber are used. The inflatable element is installed inside the cover, which, if necessary, can be quickly removed and washed.

Another classification of poufs allows you to divide them into groups according to their degree of rigidity. It depends on which filler is used in them.

The ottoman remains soft if filled with sintepon, holofiber, polyurethane foam. Top of the product is often covered with leather - both natural and artificial. These ottomans look stylish and formal. Various types of dense fabrics are also used for upholstery, which make ottomans more homely.

Rigid options are made of wood of various species or rattan. Products are varnished or stained. Such poufs can successfully replace a coffee table. These are not the most convenient designs, but due to their stylish appearance they can wonderful decorate the interior.

The next classification is based on the functionality of ottomans. They can act as seats, additional elements of upholstered furniture, transformers.

The ottoman seat has a height of approximately 35-40 cm. Most often they have a longer length than standard chairs and resemble a bench. Their second name is padded stool. For rooms decorated in a modern style, poufs with an irregular shape are perfect.

Poof - an addition, as a rule, is bought with a sofa, bed or chairs and is designed in the same style and color scheme with the rest of the furniture.

The transforming ottoman with ease turns into a chair, a folding bed, five stools.

In a separate category include poufs equipped with backs. They resemble small baby seats.

Workshops on manufacturing poufs from different materials

It’s as easy as picking up a ready-made pouf in a store. But this option is not always suitable due to a limited budget or the choice of thematic design. Then it’s easier to make this piece of furniture with your own hands.

Pouf from old frame furniture

If you are limited in means, but there is an old cabinet available, which is high time to throw it away, the base for the pouf can be made from its parts.

Tread pouf

Take your time to throw away the old tire - it has every chance of getting a second life. The wheel can be turned into a wonderful and original pouf.

Tire ottoman

Tools and materials

To complete the work you need to stock up:

  • a tire;
  • plywood sheet;
  • sisal cord;
  • varnish;
  • tape measure;
  • a drill;
  • a screwdriver;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • jigsaw;
  • scissors;
  • glue gun;
  • glue sticks;
  • with a brush.

Step-by-step master class

  1. First of all, you need to prepare the tire - thoroughly wash and dry it. Use a brush to remove dried dirt on the tread.
  2. We put the tire on a plywood sheet, circle it with a pencil and cut the part with a jigsaw. This blank will serve as a seat. We make the base using the first circle as a template.

Step-by-step master class

When drawing a circle, step back a little inside the tire. Due to this, a protrusion is formed, which will be easier to glue with a cord.

  1. Fasten the plywood disk to the bus. We apply the seat, press it and make a few holes through a tree and rubber with a drill. Make sure that the part does not move, so it will be easier to dock the holes made. Lock the workpiece by placing a heavy object on it. Then screw the screws into the previously formed holes. We fix the second part on the tire from the reverse side in the same way.

Design, decoration and decoration of the finished product

We decorate the pouf with a sisal cord. It disguises unsightly rubber and plywood, and gives the product a finished and attractive look.

Poufs made of tires

We start work from the center of the plywood disk. Heat the gun until the rod melts. Squeeze the composition in small doses - one serving for 2-3 turns. As the size of the coils increases, the glue consumption will increase.

Do not squeeze out a lot of glue at once - it thickens very quickly.

After gluing the seat, we continue to stick the cord on the surface of the tire. The coils must be laid as tightly as possible, without leaving cracks with rubber looking through them. Do not forget to draw the end of the bottom plywood disc with a rope. You can complete the work on this - you don’t need to decorate the base. Cut off the cord and fix its end well. If you want the pouf to become mobile or just rise above the floor, attach legs or structures equipped with wheels to it.

In conclusion, cover the entire glued surface of the ottoman with two layers of varnish. This will ensure the durability of the product and allow its use even on the street.

Painted pouf

As an alternative, you can offer to paint the tire in a bright color, to make the seat soft, using a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber as a lining. If desired, you can connect two tires at an angle of 90 degrees - you get an ottoman with a back. The winding can be replaced with a removable cover - it is easier to care for it. For its manufacture, you can take a whole piece of fabric, or you can sew a product from flaps or knit from yarn. On the sides you can attach pockets for storing trifles.

How to sew a pouf or chair bag with your own hands

Frameless poufs are in great demand because they have many advantages. They are spectacular, lightweight, mobile, occupy a minimum of space and are able to adapt to the shape of the body, so that the load is distributed evenly. Making a chair bag yourself is quite possible. To do this, you just need to download the drawing, cut out the details, stitch the edges and fill the product with polyurethane ball filler.

How to sew a pouffe bag

What fabric to choose for frameless furniture

The bag chair consists of two covers. The inner should be formed of breathable durable materials. For the outside, you need to choose an attractive, and at the same time high-strength, easy-to-wash fabric that is resistant to abrasion. The best choice is Oxford, which is used to make tents. It has a special impregnation that makes it waterproof. Due to this, poufs made of such a fabric can be used in outdoor conditions. The canvas is presented in a wide range of colors, so you can choose the right option for any interior.

Fabric for ottoman

Leather ottomans Colored ottomans Fabric for ottoman Material for ottoman The choice of fabric for the ottoman

Another version of the material for the outer case is eco-leather. It is also waterproof and easy to care for.

If the ottoman will be used only at home, you can use other dense fabrics - velveteen or tapestry. However, for washing such a cover will need to be removed, so you will need to install a zipper.

Making a homemade ottoman is not difficult at all. Choose your favorite model and realize your idea.
