Wooden platbands

The accuracy of the design and the creation of a certain style of the facade of the house largely depend on the details. For example, the installation of carved wooden platbands on the windows will emphasize the rustic style. But the installation of "strict" plastic or metal frames will contribute to the modern look of the exterior. That is why, before choosing such elements, you need to carefully familiarize yourself with their range, features and characteristics of the materials from which they are made.

In addition, the installation conditions and auxiliary protection of the window frame on different buildings (brick, stone, wooden) should be taken into account. Having familiarized with this information, you can easily find the platbands suitable for the price, quality and differing in simplicity of installation. In addition, with the help of our step-by-step master class, you can independently make the original cashing for the windows of your house.

Function and classification of platbands

The main function of window frames for windows is to protect the near-window space and the facade itself, the walls of the house. With their help, you can hide the mounting materials used to fix the window unit. Also, the platbands can be hidden and the technological gap around the window. Apertures closed from negative external influences (precipitation, street dust) will last much longer. Additionally, the window will freeze in the opening area. Equally important is the aesthetic appeal of facades, rooms in which such elements are used. As for the classification of platbands, it is carried out regarding the placement of elements:

  • Outdoor.

They are located on the facade, mainly perform a protective function, but also contribute to emphasizing the stylization of the exterior.

  • Internal

The main purpose of the elements is to create a neat transition of the window block to the slopes, hide technological gaps and stylize the interior.

Materials of manufacture

Modern manufacturers make platbands from a variety of materials: wood and its derived raw materials, metal, plastic. Naturally, finished products are characterized by durability, appearance and practicality. Low-cost and low-maintenance models include plastic and metal platbands. They should only be cleaned occasionally from street dust by wiping with a damp rag. Wooden platbands need periodic coloring, impregnation with antiseptics. The frequency of impregnation depends on the stability of the selected composition and the requirements of the manufacturer (many companies recommend re-processing after 3-5-8 years). But the frequency of the change of paint layers directly depends on the wear resistance of the used compositions and their service life.As for MDF cashing, it is intended solely for internal work.

Wood

The quality and durability of wooden platbands directly depends on the tree used and its characteristics. Often for the manufacture of such elements are used:

  • hardwoods (oak, beech, ash): have maximum resistance to negative influences, but are very difficult to carve;
  • soft-leaved breeds (alder, aspen, linden): they are easily processed, therefore they are mainly used for the production of carved platbands, but they need high-quality protection against moisture;
  • conifers (pine, spruce): differ in accessibility, for a rather long time, with proper protection, they retain their pristine condition;
  • fruit (cherries, apple trees): stand out for their excellent softness and ease of cutting, elements of them are used as decoration for platbands.

According to the types of wooden platbands are divided into standard (with or without chamfer, with rounding) and carved. The former have a small thickness and are most often made straight (or with minimal bending). On carved models, figured recesses are cut in the form of patterns.

Plastic

Plastic platbands - an ideal setting for metal-plastic windows. They can also be installed to frame wooden, painted in white or light gray, window structures. The advantage of this type of product is its low cost and ease of maintenance. Unlike wooden counterparts, they do not require constant protection from negative external influences. In addition, they are much cheaper than metal counterparts. The disadvantages of such frames include a small selection of shapes and colors. But with the right choice of color, the acquired frame will look appropriate both against the background of stone or white brick, and against the background of siding. Installation of plastic platbands can be carried out both inside and outside.Such products are minimally susceptible to temperature extremes, and thanks to the high-quality colors used in their manufacture, they will not fade or turn yellow in the sun.

MDF

Modern MDF platbands attract the lowest price. At the same time, their assortment is quite wide: both straight and rounded elements can be used at the base. The upper part is covered with a special film, which allows you to stylize unusual frames. In addition to the monophonic design, you can easily find MDF platbands with imitation of wood, stone and metal surfaces. The only drawback of such products is the inability to use outside. Even with a short hit of moisture, the base (MDF) will quickly deteriorate and require replacement. Such platbands can only be used for indoor framing of windows or doors. True, they are recommended to be installed with extreme caution in bathrooms with insufficient quality (or low-power) ventilation. They do not need special care: simply removing dust or wiping with a slightly damp sponge will be enough.

Metal

Metal casters - a universal and inexpensive solution for any buildings. In most cases, they are used to stylize office buildings and provide additional protection for window openings. But the windows in a private house made of brick or stone will also complement well. Such products are recommended to be installed in addition to metal-plastic windows: with wooden frames they will look inappropriate. Metal casing is a galvanized strip coated with wear-resistant paint. That is why the framing of metal will last for many years without the need for periodic processing. Look great against the background of the non-standard facade decoration: siding, metal and PVC panels, lining. They emphasize the severity and modernity of the exterior design.

Platband device

There are two options for cashing, depending on the features and design of the framed window:

  • From 4 sides.

In this embodiment, the platbands are located below, above and on the sides of the frame. For some buildings, the lower and upper trim of adjacent windows (located on the same wall at a small distance from each other) may be common. In this case, these elements are mounted first, and the side casings are installed after a precise fit.

  • From 3 sides.

This method of framing is used in the case of mounting an external window sill (low tide). Precise estimates of the size and shape of the installed window sill are needed first. Then, the side parts are adjusted and mounted. The upper harness is installed last.

Ways of fastening platbands

The options for attaching window frames to windows depend on the material of the frames themselves, the type of frame, and even the type of building facade. When installing, the following requirements are mandatory:

  1. Minimal damage to platband fasteners: fasteners are marked in advance.
  2. Preserving the aesthetic attractiveness of cashing after installation: it is recommended to choose a method of installation in which the appearance of the platbands will be minimally changed.
  3. Additional protection (closing) of fasteners after mounting cashing: to a greater extent applies to self-tapping screws, the caps of which, depending on the platband material, can be rubbed with a special wax pencil or closed with plastic plugs (this option is also applicable for door casings).

Installation of plastic and metal platbands

The simplest installation is carried out for metal platbands, since it does not require a long fitting of parts. The frame is trimmed according to the size of the window opening and is installed using self-tapping screws. Previously, dowels for fasteners are installed in a brick or stone wall.For the upper and lower trim for reliable fixation of a small window, 3 self-tapping screws are enough, for the side - 3-4. Plastic cashing is also quite easy to install, but the most accurate marking of the areas where fasteners will be located is required. Installation of self-tapping screws, which will be located under the casing, is carried out in the frame itself or in the fittings (casing in the house from solid wood), if any. Previously, nipples are put on the screws. After the platbands (hollow filigree, having special grooves under the nipples inside) are applied to the fasteners and tap. Thus, the nipple fits snugly into the groove and snaps into place. According to this scheme, the platbands are installed both outside and inside the building - to create a neat transition to the slopes.

Features of fastening wooden platbands

Installation of any type of platbands made of wood should be carried out with the maximum concealment of fasteners. That is why, before installing such elements, it is recommended that you carefully consider the installation method and prepare for it. Additionally, the following installation rules must be considered:

  1. Pre-check the accuracy of the junction of the elements and the installation itself to be carried out under the level.
  2. After the direct installation of the elements, it is necessary to treat the wood with impregnation, antiseptic varnish or paint. This will prevent the destruction of the structure of the tree due to the negative effects of moisture, temperatures. If you carry out such processing before fixing platbands, then it will be simply impossible to guarantee the safety of wood at the locations of the fasteners.
  3. When selecting fasteners, take into account the softness of the wood species from which they are made. If soft rocks are minimally affected by nails, then hard rocks may crack in the future where fasteners are located.

Simple in shape from moldings

Installation of simple wooden platbands in shape begins with the fitting of parts (if necessary, individual elements are adjusted, sawed edges at an angle of 45 degrees). Further installation can be carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. Hidden or through spikes (dowels). In the first embodiment, through holes are prepared for dowel from the back of the platbands. In the places of their fastening (often in the casing) similar holes are prepared and prepared dowels are installed in them. Then the platbands simply “stuff” around the window. In the second version, these spikes will be visible, and the hole in the clypeus will be through.
  2. Small nails or wood screws. Platbands are beaten around the perimeter of the frame (for casing), so that the fastenings used are practically not visible. You need to arrange the fasteners in one row (to maintain the attractiveness of cashing).

Mounting carved platbands

Installation of carved platbands is not difficult, if initially they were made by accurate measurements of the window opening, which will be framed. It should be borne in mind that the patterns cut out on the frame must match exactly. After the final “fitting” of the platbands, they are installed. Finishing nails (with small caps) are often used for fastening. They are invisible on the assembled frame, so they are ideal for decorative elements. Additionally, you can connect the individual parts of the cashing using spikes (dowels). There is a need for them when installing heavy and even bulky wooden frames. With a small weight of platbands, the need to use dowels simply disappears.

Carved platbands

Nailing the finish nails is best on unobtrusive areas of the frame to maintain the attractive appearance of platbands.

How to fasten platbands to a log wall

If any types of platbands can be attached to log cabins without problems, then for log buildings, the installation of a window frame requires special preparation. For wave-like walls of the facade, installation can be carried out in one of the following ways:

  • wall alignment;

Initially, logs are cut to obtain a relatively flat area with minor recesses. You can align them with putty. The size of the sections removed along the window perimeter should be equal to the sizes of the chosen platbands or literally 1-2 cm larger (for volumetric and figured frames).

  • use of auxiliary beam.

In this embodiment, pieces of timber are nailed to the casing, which will serve as the basis for the installation of platbands. The formed cracks can be caulked or blown with foam and covered with putty.

Tips for preventing moisture under the platbands

In addition to protecting not only the windows, but also the platbands themselves from moisture and precipitation (and their flowing under the frame), the use of the following elements will help:

  • wooden and metal visors;

They complement the upper harness, are arranged at an angle and ensure that water does not drain off the window, but directly in front of it. The angle of inclination may be equal to the angle of inclination of the roof. Visors are mounted directly above the upper harness close to the wall. Additionally, the joint between the wall and the top of the visor can be sealed with sealant (for outdoor use). Wooden visors rest on the upper harness with consoles. Metal just “hang” over it.

  • the location of the lower trim at an angle.

The lower harness on the supports, located at an angle, will provide quick water drainage from the bottom of the frame. This solution is often used for wooden windows.

DIY platbands

Even ordinary owners can make simple and carved platbands with their own hands: it is not necessary to be a master of carpentry,to make such products. But in order for the finished casters to be really high-quality and accurate, you should select soft-leaved wood (linden or aspen) for work. Simple platbands are easy to make. To do this, you need to purchase a thick board with a width of 10-15 cm. Next, you need to cut it to the size of the window, given the need to cut the edges of the side elements, the upper and lower trim at an angle of 45 degrees. You can round the side parts with the help of a klukarz (rounded chisel). The manufacture of carved platbands is carried out according to the following step-by-step master class:

  1. A suitable pattern is selected and printed on cardboard.
  2. A stencil is cut out of cardboard, the drawing is transferred (in full size!) To a natural tree.
  3. The jigsaw cut out the extra details of the pattern. Chisel (or klukarzoy) made curly recesses, if necessary.
  4. The wood is treated with impregnation, covered with paint and varnish.

Making platbands in the Russian style will help to produce not only patterned, but also painted decor. Paint should be applied to wood treated with antiseptic. Additionally, you can varnish the finished product.

Conclusion

Neat and beautiful platbands are not only the best way to protect window frames from moisture and precipitation, but also allow you to complete the stylization of facades. Platbands made of different materials can be supplemented with visors to prevent water from entering the windows and draining water along the walls under the window openings. But they can also be supplemented with a more practical and stylish decor. For example, wooden shutters, installed together with wooden platbands, will ensure complete closure of the room from sunlight. But forged lattices will further increase the safety of residents and protect the house from the penetration of thieves. When choosing suitable platbands, it is necessary to take into account the materials from which the installed windows and facade are made.You should also consider the general style of the structure. Thus, choosing the right cashing option for any building is not difficult.
