Window decoration with curtains

Window decoration

Beautiful window decoration is usually the finishing touch to decorate the entire interior. It is important to choose the right textile, cornice, decoration. Curtains are hung both in private and in apartment buildings. The modern variety of textile materials allows you to choose a decor for almost any existing interior style.

Rules for window decoration curtains

When decorating window openings, it is advisable to be guided by the following principles:

  • if the wall covering is matte, curtains fit satin, silk, matte curtains are hung on the background of embossed, shiny wallpaper, photo wallpaper;
  • when colorful walls, bright, multi-color prints, curtains are preferred on the walls, plain, pastel, neutral tones;
  • draperies with vertical stripes, patterns, visually make the room taller, horizontal wider;
  • when the ceiling is very low, hanging lambrequins is not recommended;
  • a cornice mounted directly in the ceiling also visually increases the height of the latter;
  • in cramped rooms it is advisable to avoid bulky, multilayer curtains.

The choice of curtains, height, mounting method

Curtains for curtains are mounted to the wall above the window opening or directly to the ceiling. The latter option allows the curtain to completely cover the entire wall - from the ceiling to the floor, without gaps, without dividing the space horizontally. Ceiling curtains are made of:

  • natural wood (oak, beech, linden, ash, cherry, etc.) coated with transparent varnish;
  • plastic glued with a decorative film;
  • metal (usually aluminum, less commonly stainless steel);
  • polyurethane (if the cornice needs flexible).

Wooden curtain

This kind of cornices can be easily completely hidden in the ceiling, making it almost invisible, which looks especially good. Wall cornices are made:

  • strings;
  • baguette;
  • specialized;
  • barbell;
  • under Japanese curtains;
  • for role curtains.

String cornice

The acceptable width of the cornice is 30-50 cm larger than the size of the window, at least five to seven cm are left from the top of the opening to the curtains. The curtain should not “lie” on the windowsill, heating radiator, therefore the distance from the wall to the curtain itself should be at least 10 -12 cm. The optimal distance from the ceiling to the wall cornice is 3-9 cm.

Suspension of the cornice is carried out using brackets, anchors, you must first take all necessary measurements - the extreme fastenings are located 15-20 cm from the perimeter of the window so that the curtains, when fully open, do not obscure it.

Fabric Type Selection

As a material for window draperies, many different types of textiles are used, made of natural, artificial, synthetic or mixed fibers. When choosing the right textile, consider:

  • practicality - it is easy to clean a drapery, to clear of pollution at home;
  • the degree of combustibility is especially important for kitchens, public institutions;
  • durability - the ability to sufficiently obscure a room without fading, without losing a beautiful appearance;
  • compliance - important for curtains that are creased;
  • absorbency - balcony curtains should not absorb dust, kitchen curtains should not absorb water, odors;
  • compatibility with existing interior styling.

Jacquard

The following materials are best suited for sewing curtains:

  • jacquard - dense, embossed, very durable, looks beautiful on both sides;
  • velvet - fleecy, heavy, soft, suitable for "solemn" interiors;
  • atlas - “pours”, gently shines, relatively soft, is smooth or patterned;
  • brocade - a fabric with a metallic sheen, shimmers, does not require additional decoration;
  • blackout - three-layer, perfectly protects the room from street light, cold, noise;
  • satin - thin, has an attractive appearance, shines, resembles silk;
  • organza - the thinnest, but strong enough, opaque or brilliant;
  • shenill - similar to velvet, but slightly lighter, it is solid or with a pattern, such as jacquard;
  • tulle - thin, translucent, has the appearance of a patterned fabric, mesh;
  • taffeta - forms “brittle” folds, therefore it is used to perform unusual elements of complex texture;
  • Kisei - is used to create thread curtains, well letting in air, slightly dimming the light;
  • flock - on a textile basis with a nap-pattern sprayed onto it, sometimes covered with powder “under gilding”, “under silver”;
  • the veil is a soft, translucent, rather dark material, if several layers are applied.

Length, width of curtains

The dimensions of the curtains are made about 15-30 cm wider than the window opening in each direction, if you just need to drape a window of the same width as the opening to visually narrow it, expand the window by 35-50 cm more.

First of all, measurements are made using a long ruler, tape measure: from the cornice to the window sill, from the floor to the cornice, the length of the cornice itself. The length of the curtains is usually selected from three options:

  • short - barely reach the surface of the windowsill;
  • ordinary - one to three cm. do not reach the floor;
  • elongated - equal to the distance from the floor plane to the cornice plus 15-30 cm.

Fastening to the cornice is made on loops or eyelets - this is also important to consider when choosing the length. The width is calculated based on the density of the fabric: the length of the cornice is multiplied by the coefficient of splendor. For heavy textiles, it is equal to two, medium - 2.5, light - 3.

Short curtains

How to choose a textile color

The color of the textile material selected for window decoration is:

  • coinciding with the basic tone of the walls;
  • combined with other textiles in the room (upholstery, carpets, tablecloths, valances, etc.);
  • suitable for the color of the largest furniture elements;
  • differing from the color of the walls by two to four tones;
  • in stark contrast to the general background.

It should be remembered that bright and dark colors visually reduce the size of the room, light - on the contrary, increase.

What style says about window decoration

Examples, tips for decorating windows in different rooms

Professional designers give the following recommendations for windows located in different rooms:

  • if the living room has more than one window and all of them are tall, narrow, it makes sense to use a common curtain for them, including covering the entire wall;
  • in a small bedroom, the color curtains are often made the same with the walls;
  • on a curtain with a bright textured pattern, it is undesirable to create many folds;
  • in a cramped room, lush curtains will take up a lot of space;
  • curtains of neutral tones (gray, white, beige, etc.) are suitable for almost any interior;
  • voluminous curtains with ruffles and lambrequins are unacceptable in the loft, minimalism, high-tech, Japanese interiors.

The kitchen, especially the cooking area, is often exposed to dirt, grease, drops of food and drinks. The safety issue is no less important - the curtain rod, like the curtains on it, must be fixed so that the child with all the desire to tear them away. Too long, "lying on the floor" options are unacceptable - it is easy to catch on them, slip, fall. Excessively lush curtains are impractical, and they take up a lot of free space, which is better to use for games. The dyes used to color the curtain fabric should be environmentally friendly, not fade, not “smear” when touched with wet hands. Ideal for curtains made of bamboo, cotton, linen. The room of a calm child is decorated with bright drapery, the active one - with curtains of calm colors.
