Types of baseboards

Types of baseboards

In recent decades, more and more varieties of skirting boards have appeared on sale. The main and additional materials were changed, new fasteners were used. Changes affected the form. If before it was mostly angular, now it’s flat and elongated in height. Some options "returned" from the past: fillets with a round groove, decorative wall plinths. Modern conditions required the introduction of new amenities, such as a cavity for cables, decorative lining and even - folding structures. In recent years, a new trend has been added - removable elements. There are 4 types of skirting boards according to the type of application and more than a dozen, based on materials and their variations. Installation of the product does not require special skills or knowledge. After high-quality surface finish assembly will not cause difficulties.

The functional purpose of skirting boards

Installation of skirting boards brings the finish to a logical conclusion. The interior element has a decorative meaning: ennobles the room, improves its perception and makes the atmosphere more aesthetic. Planks strengthen the floor and ceiling. The edges of the wallpaper, linoleum and carpet, laminate boards are also hidden under the baseboard. Without skirting boards, floating floors cannot be installed, which expand and contract when the temperature changes. Planks hide flaws, roughnesses, holes, ugly curved joints. With their help, the finish is closed from water, protect from mechanical damage at the edges and joints. Prevention of deformation and wear of coatings is another aspect of the functional benefit of the skirting board. In addition, you can save on the edging of the room, because the structure of the material is simple and understandable, and anyone who knows how to use power tools can mount the structure.

Main types: advantages and disadvantages

At the place of use, floor, ceiling, wall and furniture skirtings are distinguished. Ceiling sometimes make part of the tension level structures. Among manufacturing materials, preference is given to wood, plastics, stone, ceramics and flexible options. Wooden are made from planed boards, corks, LDF, MDF and liquid wood. Plastic are made of duropolymer, polyurethane, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).Wood is a classic solution, but among all the options, MDF is mainly suitable, since the material is resistant to moisture, temperature contrasts and relatively cheap. Plastic products, in turn, are resistant to various influences, as well as to the formation of fungus and mold. Their weaknesses are a tendency to darken and a lack of strength. The stone is reliable and decorative. Like flexible products, stone options are rarely budgetary. Flexible, in turn, are used for rooms with a complex shape.

Before buying products for different surfaces and furniture, you should decide on the full color scheme.

Ceramic

Ceramic skirting boards are used in bathrooms and kitchens. Special borders decorate plumbing and surfaces. Mixed materials with reinforcing compounds have a minimum of weaknesses. Modified ceramics are made solid and durable. In other words, tensile strength is added to compressive strength. As a result, the bathroom “gets” an impact-resistant lining that cleans well and practically does not respond to strong chemicals. The structure of ceramics copes with temperature jumps and high humidity, does not deform from the inside and outside. High hygiene and environmental friendliness are noted. The material is easy to clean, does not absorb dirt and contains natural ingredients. There are practically no minuses, but it should be remembered that ordinary products often crack after impacts.

Varieties of ceramic baseboards-borders:

  • angular;
  • frieze for tiles;
  • pencil.

To install you will need:

  • pliers;
  • level;
  • sealant;
  • putty knife;
  • liquid Nails.

Skirting board with cable channel

The product is a strip of any material with a groove for placing cables and electrical wires. Most often, such skirting boards are made of PVC: hard or foamed.Among modern models, the cable channel option has become the most common. Improved modifications with a removable part appeared on sale: to facilitate the finishing and laying of wires. The interior of the skirting board is usually divided into 2 or 3 separate channels. The advent of a new type of skirting board solved several problems at once. Now you do not need to ditch the walls and fasten the wires to the finish. The positive qualities include high versatility. The structural feature does not interfere with the use of different materials. There are also fasteners for flush mounting products with a cable channel. A cavity for the wires is present in flexible options.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane is the result of technological development. The products filling the market are appreciated for their pleasant appearance and environmental safety. Individual modifications are able to maintain their qualities for more than 30 years. With external resemblance to some other materials, polyurethane has a high level of strength: scratches do not appear on the products. Skirtings are cleaned with light movements of a rag or sponge, with or without detergent. Polyurethane has the property of bending, so the material is used in the decoration of rounded surfaces with curvy or smooth lines. To everything else, ease of installation is added. Buyers choose products from many options of different colors, ornaments, textures. At the same time, polyurethane trims are inferior to similar polyethylene ones: due to their high cost and high weight.

Plastic

Plastic products are used more and more often, which at the same time reduces the percentage of wooden applications. Plastic skirting boards have already reached the first position in popularity. Product prices are the most powerful argument, also taking into account the conditions of the material and its modern appearance. Plinths made of plastic are not deformed, they are not “afraid” of adverse external factors: dryness, humidity,ultraviolet, heat, cold, fungus. At the same time, aggressive chemical compounds act on the material more actively. The properties of plastic allow you to mount it several times. The manufacturing technology itself is also considered a strength. Manufacturers usually produce profiled options for different needs. In the plastic strip there is always a cavity for cables and wires. Due to the short lifetime, the material still did not become an uncontested option. Masters also note low impact strength.

From MDF

MDF planks contain fine wood fractions, veneer or its imitation, urea resins and lignin. Reliable bonding of wood chips provides vacuum pressing. Buyers have access to a large selection of colors and shapes, options that mimic different materials. MDF can withstand the damaging effects of chemicals that harm plastic products and certain types of wood. Skirting boards made of MDF sheets are processed and mounted quickly and without complications, and after installation no special care is required. The material retains color even under regular exposure to sunlight. Negative factors have virtually no effect on the life of the product. At the same time, the mechanical effect is reflected on MDF skirting to a greater extent than on wood, particleboard and similar materials. Overall strength is also not a strong point.

Metal

Popular materials:

  1. Aluminum.
  2. Brass.
  3. Stainless steel.

Metal products are produced for a variety of purposes. They are used in industrial facilities, in non-residential premises, halls and shopping centers, in an expensive interior with urban accents. Plinths from metal are sometimes decorated with backlighting - they get a harmonious combination of bright color and metal texture. The metal coating is lined to give the product a decorative effect.So, aluminum skirting boards are painted with powder enamel or by anodizing. In turn, brass strips and fillets are not covered with additional layers, including tread. At the same time, part of the finishing materials contains a surface film to simulate the shades and texture of the tree. Most metal products withstand chemical and physical-mechanical effects. A wide range of sizes is available to customers. In contrast to all the advantages, the complexity of processing, a small variation in appearance, and price play.

Veneered or veneered

A veneered (veneered) baseboard is made of two components: a bar and a veneer coating on the front side. The veneer is formed from a thin section of expensive species. For the base, conifers are often chosen: pine and spruce. The front surface is treated with compositions to improve decorative properties. Large baseboards are made from hardwood: cherry, beech, oak or ash. A key advantage of all veneered options is the price. The buyer receives savings on natural material with an attractive appearance. Burnout resistance of veneered plinths is not lower than that of ordinary wooden ones. At the same time, the coating will be vulnerable to shock and compression. Like other wooden products, veneers are mounted with a lot of manipulation, and only on fasteners. Glue and sealants will not work. Hardware for a specific product is not made.

Wooden

Wood products in this sense have always occupied the first positions, because the plinth is a kind of addition to furniture. By color and texture, they are selected to the floor, walls or furniture elements. The strips are screwed with ordinary screws. The tree is completely safe for human health - it is a reliable and environmentally friendly material.Despite the relative vulnerability of the top layer, wood skirting boards are generally strong, stable in terms of mechanical stress. With high-quality processing and proper care, the products last for decades and retain their relevance. Manufacturers of wooden skirting boards often adhere to a high pricing policy, and this is the first in the list of cons. Ordinary wood is largely exposed to external factors such as temperature, humidity, and ultraviolet radiation. Decorative options make worthy competition for skirting boards made of stone.

Aluminum

This type of metal is popular due to its light weight combined with strength indicators. Aluminum skirting boards serve for decades without any visible changes. The metal has pronounced anti-corrosion properties and resistance to external influences of any nature. Wear resistance promotes the use of aluminum in hallways and corridors. Among all moisture resistant materials, it is most suitable for bathrooms and showers, unheated technical rooms. The natural color of aluminum fillets is combined with modern styles and trendy trends in design. The use of such skirting boards is limited by the high cost. Resistance to the environment does not remove the ban on the use of aggressive cleaning products and abrasives. Low or medium quality aluminum may darken. In this case, special detergents are provided.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel skirting boards have a polished or satin finish. The first subspecies has mirror properties, and they are used in the interior design in the style of hi-tech - with many glasses and reflective elements. Satin variants are obtained after finely abrasive grinding of the profile, as a result of which reflective qualities are enhanced. With products, they usually sell their own cast hardware.At the same time, sealant or glue is used during installation. Stainless steel skirting boards are generally indented to mask bumps. In addition to corrosion resistance, stainless steel easily tolerates shock and pressure, and is not scratched. Stainless steel straps are easy to install, and their life is almost unlimited. At the same time, among all types of skirting boards, they are the most expensive after options made of stone.

Dimensions

Options with specific parameters are easier to make from plastic. In practice, there are working restrictions on the length of the slats and cross-section. If we talk about plastic products, then the following frameworks are relevant: length - 200-2500 mm, thickness - 10-26 mm, height - 50-120 mm. Manufacturers work with these indicators, but individually you can order products for the characteristics of their housing. Released parts are also available. They are used when the gap between the floor and the wall exceeds the parameters required by the technology. Skirting boards are made with standard ratios of height and thickness. For triangular options it is 48 × 48, 22 × 22 and 50 × 30 mm. For elongated in height - 52 × 20, 70 × 12, 40 × 10, 44 × 10, 60 × 10 and 44 × 4.5 mm - plastic skirting boards are usually made in accordance with the specified parameters.

Design and style

The nuances of the selection of materials and external qualities depend on the main styles:

  • classic;
  • minimalist;
  • avant-garde;
  • high tech;
  • loft;
  • provincial: country and provence;
  • Modern and Art Nouveau.

In a “contemporary” setting, triangular options look worse than flat ones. High floor skirting boards as well as backlit ceiling ones look advantageous. Design expressiveness is achieved by replacing skirting boards with moldings. As for the style decisions, in the classic interior buy options from wood, MDF or stone. The atmosphere in the spirit of minimalism or avant-garde is a space for plastic and metal, to a lesser extent - for other materials.Country style “welcomes” the use of wood, stone and metal. Design for Art Nouveau and Art Nouveau allows the use of plastic with imitation wood. Moreover, flexible options will provide more options for decoration. Any options are installed in lofts, and combining them will give only a positive effect. Experiments with shape and size will not interfere.

Add-on elements for skirting boards

The main details:

  1. Corners.
  2. Stubs.
  3. Connectors
  4. Brackets.

Corner elements are internal and external. The first type is installed at the joints of two fragments of the plinth, forming an internal angle. External, respectively - on the protruding edges. Brackets are used to distribute cables in the corners. The outer corners are not mounted on the brackets themselves, but the parts are in contact. Stubs are mounted on the open edges of the skirting boards: usually fragments end in front of the door trim, with a margin of several centimeters. In the case of corpulent skirtings, you can do without stubs. Connectors are used if for one reason or another two separate pieces converge on a flat surface. In their structure, they have two double-sided spikes. As a result, you will need to count all the external and internal angles and the number of doorways. It will be more convenient for someone to assemble a design from many pieces, for others - to cut the necessary fragments from long rails.

Installation methods and features

There is a hidden method using clips and an option with fastening through the baseboard itself. For strips with curly stripes inside, there is a method that involves mounting on rails. In all cases, the main task is to tightly connect the baseboard and the wall. In this sense, it is better to choose products with rubberized edges. Hardware is selected with large flat hats, especially for straight skirting boards. Speaking accessories simply spoil the decorative qualities of the material.Before installing the baseboard, it will not hurt to assemble the cables in one or more bundles - depending on the presence and structure of the internal cavities. The wires assembled together will easily pass through a channel in the plank or a groove in the wall. Need point fixation, double-sided tape and film. To cut the skirting board use a saw or clerical knife.

Parts of the plinth should go into additional elements 2-3 mm.

Skirting Installation

Using clips

The method is based on the use of 2 types of fasteners: clips as separate plates and a long panel that matches the length of the baseboard. A long latch will act as a cable channel. First, clips are attached to the wall, and then the elongated panel is snapped onto them. After that, the baseboard is mounted. The technique is suitable only for smooth walls without skewing and roughness, otherwise the baseboard will then fly off the mount. The algorithm of work consists of five stages. The first thing to do is markup: designate points for installing clips. Using a laser level, draw a horizontal line through the marks. In a straight line at the right points set the clips themselves. If cable management is provided, then they are carried out along the fasteners and fastened with double-sided tape or plastic ties. After that, the oblong panel and baseboard are fixed.

Mounting the baseboard with clips

Skirting with dowels / screws

This is a more universal way, and it is also suitable for uneven walls. The bottom line is simple fastening to the surface through the holes. Moreover, if the shape of the plinth allows, then it will be possible to run cables over the joints, so that later they can be hidden with a long plug. The beginning of the work looks like this: the baseboard is applied to the wall, aligned and pressed. The strap is fixed with masking tape so that it remains stationary. Then determine the place for the holes. In work, drill bits for metal from 3 to 4 mm are used. Holes are made near the corners and evenly in the resulting gap. Observe a step of about 35-40 cm, a maximum of 50.At this stage, sometimes limited to marks. The holes are selected for fasteners: for dowels, drill bits are selected a millimeter wider than the fastener, and for self-tapping screws - 1-2 mm thinner. After that, additional elements are put on the baseboard and fasteners begin to be inserted.

Ideal hardware parameters:

  • length - 25-40 mm;
  • diameter is 4-5 mm.

How to calculate the required footage of a skirting board

You can find out the exact amount of materials after independent calculations or in specialized calculators. The initial data indicate the total perimeter, that is, the total length of the walls of all rooms (L). The width of all the openings (B) is added to them: the size of the interior is multiplied by 2, of the input - left unchanged. As a result, the required length of the baseboard is obtained. To find out the exact number of individual parts, you will need to enter all of the above indicators. As a result, the calculator will give the result with the quantity of the baseboard in pieces, and with it the remainder in meters. This is true for floor skirting. The length of the upper slats is calculated by adding the perimeters of all rooms at the ceiling level with rounding to a larger value and adding an additional 1 meter to each room. The number of products is determined by dividing the increased indicator by the length of one skirting board.

How to choose the color of the skirting board

Proper room design begins with an assessment of the overall picture. Skirting boards of the same color are suitable for dark floors, but if the walls have a rich shade, but the white bar will be even better, especially in combination with ceiling skirting boards and panels. When all the skirting boards are in the same shade - the walls become more expressive, decorative elements such as paintings, vases and figurines are emphasized. For a classic style without an emphasis on luxury, this solution will definitely be a success. The color of the finished upper strips is almost always white. In which case they are simply painted. The shade must be combined with the ceiling, the perfect balance is one tone.In practice, other color schemes are also implemented, for example, choosing skirting boards for the color of doors and trim. Planks will help in creating compositions from a variety of color transitions.

Conclusion

When the room is almost ready, it remains to choose the baseboard. Installation of floor and ceiling slats almost always coincides with the end of the repair. Oblong panels with decorative and practical functions have become an indispensable attribute of the interior, and in the era of technological development, the choice has expanded significantly. Customers are available products from ceramics, porcelain, wood, MDF, polyurethane, metal, plastic and stone. There are imitation options on sale, folding bars, curbs for bathrooms and enclosures with channels for wires. The first task is to determine the color palette, and therefore need to evaluate the interior as a whole. Then they choose the material. Preference is increasingly given to plastic - these models are modified faster than others according to the requirements of the present. Together with the purchase of a skirting board, mounts and additional elements are chosen.
