Types of ceiling plates made of polystyrene foam

Styrofoam ceiling tile

The ceiling is designed so that it is pleasant to watch. In this sense, the usual white tone seems to be a good solution, but in addition to the classic version without color and texture, decorative lining appears in the interiors. One of the varieties of modern finishing materials is polystyrene foam. For many, it is associated with packaging, but recently, with the help of different technologies and techniques, raw materials have become an option for finishing. Styrofoam make out, and also warm rooms. It is even stained with some varieties of dyes - they get a non-standard design move with a colored ceiling. Finding expanded polystyrene ceiling tiles is a process with a minimal number of “unknowns”. You need to determine the appropriate type of product and stop the selection in some kind of figure. Assembly of the system will not cause difficulties.

Material Features

Expanded polystyrene is a gas-filled mass of polystyrene and its derivatives, which also includes styrene polymers. In everyday life, the material is mistakenly compared with polystyrene, but this is only a variation of the latter. At the same time, the foam common in the household is indeed polystyrene foam. Manufacturing technology is expressed in the filling of granules with gas dissolved in polymers. Then the mass is heated with steam. As a result, they increase the granules to such a size that they occupy the entire shape and begin to cling to each other. And they use natural gas of high quality. In polystyrene, additives play an important role for finishing. This improves sound insulation performance and strengthens the material. Some varieties imitate metal, wood and marble. Special options are also made. These include:

  1. Fireproof raw materials. Its granules have carbon dioxide.
  2. Vacuum polystyrene foam. There are no gases in it.

Advantages and disadvantages of finishing

Consumers will receive a ceiling with good soundproofing performance. At the same time - this is a layer of insulation. Different types of materials, although they vary in price, are generally in an affordable category. At the same time, the appearance of the cladding will resemble expensive options for a classic interior. At a distance, only a specialist can determine the visual difference. The light weight of the foam simplifies the repair for residents, because even the weakest overlap can withstand the load.Installation work usually takes place without contamination and accumulation of debris. Moisture resistance also adds versatility: polystyrene boards are suitable for any type of room. Among the shortcomings, it is worth highlighting the air tightness of the system - mold, fungus may appear. Materials without fire protection will have to be further processed. In addition, during contact with the ceiling there is a risk of destruction of part of the relief composition.

Types of Ceiling Slabs

According to the manufacturing method distinguish extruded, extruded and injection options. The last two are distinguished by high cost and a wide range of different qualities. Pressed boards are made from blocks by compression. Their operational characteristics include many restrictions, so the material is used with an emphasis on pricing. There are also design restrictions for use in various interiors. Extruded options are obtained by pressing strips. The advantages of raw materials are expressed in longevity, structure perfection. Extruded tiles are also used to simulate natural materials: their colors and textures. Injection is made at high temperatures, which provides additional processing capabilities. The surface layer is clear thanks to special molds for manufacturing.

Ceiling slabs

Pressed

It is obtained by stamping (pressing), which is why it was named. Pressed tiles are made from the base in the form of polystyrene foam blocks. The press compresses the raw material to a thickness of 6-8 mm. The quality of the products is not the highest, but manufacturers compensate for this with a low price. This is the most affordable option among the main ones offered by the market. The surface has a porous loose texture, which adversely affects performance.Contamination should be wiped off immediately, and washing is not recommended at all. In this case, staining with aqueous emulsion solutions does not hinder. When choosing, they are necessarily guided by the margin of safety, because the plates are relatively fragile and often break. An unpleasant feature is also in the structure of the edges: when cutting, they sometimes crumble. Before facing the ceiling, the slabs are kept for 3 days in a dry room - in order to avoid shrinkage and cracks on the finishing layer.

Pressed plates

Extruded

The product is made of polystyrene strip obtained by pressing. The blank is stained or laminated. The surface of the material is perfectly flat and without a grainy texture. The coating has good density, water and dust repellent properties. Due to these features, as well as lamination, the plates can be washed. The finished material is more expensive than pressed (stamped), but at the same time it is stronger and gives greater reliability and hygiene. The shape of the tile has a “memory": the material is quickly restored after deformation. The products are produced in the form of squares, most often with parameters of 50 × 50 cm. The edges of the plates get a perfectly even shape, and the canvas itself is conveniently cut. On the reverse side there is a small cavity - because the ends are slightly bent down. The feature allows you to hide small defects in the ceiling.

Seamless ceiling tile

Injection

In production, sintering of polystyrene foam components is used. During the manufacturing process, the correctness of the shape is controlled, and after processing, a clear and deep pattern remains on the finished coating. The method gives a thickness in the range of 9-14 mm, and among all options for ceiling plates, injection is the thickest. Ceiling surfaces form as a result without visible seams. Injection finish has soundproofing properties. Moreover, in addition to noisy rooms, it will also be suitable for damp ones, since increased performance will not spoil the structure. Plates are highly durable and do not burn. They are environmentally friendly. Products are sold in white - this design will be optimal for ceilings, but the shade will not hurt to add creaminess. The problem of injection products is the high price: stamped options, for example, are 3-4 times cheaper.

Variety by surface type

3 types of products are distinguished by type of surface: laminated, seamless, mirror. Laminated tiles have a special film layer. Thanks to this processing, a wide color palette becomes available, and shades for a long time retain brightness. Laminated products are resistant to moisture. Seamless options have perfectly even edges, so gluing and applying them to the surface will not cause difficulties. The joints will turn out to be practically invisible, the rows will be accurate and regular, and the ceiling coating itself - without the least signs of curvature. Mirror materials receive a reflective layer, and, thanks to this ability, are used to visually increase the space and design techniques. Mirrored products give a variety of forms.

How to calculate the required amount

Material can be calculated by the number of fragments. The size of the slabs usually corresponds to 30 × 30, 40 × 40, 50 × 50, 30 × 60, 60 × 60, 30 × 70 or 40 × 70 cm. Sometimes the parameters are 100 × 16.5 cm. To get the result, you need to find out the area the ceiling. The indicator is divided by the area of sheets in the package. For the standard version, square tiles, these are 8 fragments with a total size of 2 m². For example, the area of the kitchen ceiling can be about 13 m². An indicator of 6.5 packages is then rounded to 7. But this is usually not enough. 1-2 packs are added to the exact or rounded number, and even better - 15-20% of the material. During cutting and installation, a few percent of the tiles will be damaged, and the mismatch of the size of the ceiling and the rows of tiles will lead to a waste of about 10%.Another technique involves filling the fields with indicators of the area of one plate and its thickness, indicating the type and size of the surface to be treated.

DIY mounting technology

Expanded polystyrene is convenient in terms of processing and installation. All actions can be performed independently. To finish the ceiling with foam plates, you will not need a frame, you will not need to coordinate its parameters with the dimensions of the panels. A sufficiently reliable adhesive for the characteristics of expanded polystyrene, liquid nails or polyurethane adhesive-foam. But because of the smooth surface of the foam, it is necessary to increase adhesion. Extruded options are initially planned to be as even as possible, their adhesiveness is even lower. Accordingly, the technology of fixing tiles requires high-quality priming. The response surface also has its effect. Standard concrete, for example, also does not have sufficient adhesion. Plaster is almost always applied to such a coating before mounting the tile. For other mating surfaces this is not relevant, but if the plaster layer was originally, then it is not removed.

Ceiling tile

In general, the following process components should be distinguished:

  1. Ceiling preparation.
  2. The choice of materials.
  3. Tile marking.
  4. Installation of plates.
  5. Seam finish.

Necessary materials and tools

You will need a ruler and a pencil: for marking the rows of tiles, marking the place for the frieze and lines for cutting polystyrene foam. Excess fragments are removed with a paint knife. Before processing the ceiling, a mixing container is also prepared. If the material is extruded foam, then a layer of plaster or putty is necessarily equipped on the surface. You will need the materials themselves and a spatula - for mixing solutions and convenient application. Putty in the future process the joints of the finished coating. Styrofoam ceiling is collected only after priming. Therefore, an appropriate brush size is additionally prepared. After mounting the tiles, friezes are usually installed. In this sense, the corners for foam versions will also not hinder. Well, the main link in a beautiful ceiling composition is glue. Mixtures for foam and glue foam are suitable.

Which glue to choose

The best options:

  • dry adhesive mixtures;
  • polyurethane adhesive foam.

First of all, study the composition. It is advisable to avoid gasoline, acetone and other solvents of this kind. Also take into account the type of surface under the foam boards: metal, brick, concrete, wood, etc. Well, the last moment at this stage is the type of work. An option for interior decoration is required. The goods must be checked for the presence of related documentation: the conclusion of the SES or quality certificate. Experienced consumers pay attention to the conditions in which they store products. The room must be dry and the packaging must be new in appearance, without traces of moisture or other materials. Then they get acquainted with the technical characteristics of the products. A universal glue or option for internal work is suitable. Among dry adhesive mixtures, special options for foam are distinguished. It has low consumption, low price and reliable parameters. Polyurethane adhesive foam quickly spreads over the coating, has high adhesion and resistance to moisture.

Ceiling surface preparation

The first step is eliminating the old finish. In the process, use a spatula to remove material and water to soak it. Coloring substances will have to be removed with a solvent or preheated with a hairdryer. At the same time, the plaster is left, but only if there were no weaknesses on it. The check is performed with light hammer blows. In which case, weaknesses are simply closed. Then the ceiling is completely cleaned of dirt and dust. Following this, cracks, grooves and other defects are eliminated - so the surface is prepared for priming. After applying the solution, the ceiling can also be covered with putty. It is sanded with sandpaper after drying. The appearance of the ceiling by 50% will depend on the smoothness of the surface under the tile. They start gluing the plates when everything dries, but before this stage everything should be checked again: small flaws can be quickly corrected.

Layout and installation of tiles

There are 2 markup options: direct and diagonal. The first involves installation parallel to the walls. The markup is carried out from the center, taking into account the ideal or non-ideal geometry of the room. Non-target parts of the plates are distributed around the edges. The first 4 plates are laid around the intersection of 2 cords from the corners of the room. The diagonal method also involves pulling the cords through the center. Along these lines, places under rows are measured. The tile is mounted in lines, moving from the center. In both cases, the installation of the coating is quick and easy. Glue is applied to the stove: in dots, as this will facilitate ventilation. The fragment is pressed to the designated place with medium strength and as tightly as possible. After a couple of minutes, the glue should set. Its residues on the front side are eliminated immediately after installation. The remaining plates are laid in a similar way. If necessary, use a paint knife.

How to seal joints between plates

You will need a minimum of devices:

  • foam sponge;
  • small capacity;
  • putty knife.

Ideally, seamless options are used, but if the choice is based on another material, then the joints should not be left. Putty is usually used as a grout. The mixture is poured into a container of water and stirred until a thick consistency. No need to be afraid that the composition will become too dense. Subsequently, take a small amount of putty on the finger and evenly fill the joints. After processing 4-5 tiles, their seams are cleaned of excess mixture. Use a foam rubber washcloth and clean water. The pressing force should be minimal. Then, when all the voids are filled, it will take 10-12 hours to dry completely. Then the entire ceiling is thoroughly cleaned, again with a sponge moistened with clean water. After 1-2 days, it will not hurt to walk along all the seams - a sponge with detergent. At the same time, the material should not have contraindications for the use of cleaning substances.

Stitching

Frieze setting

First, draw lines along the perimeter - reference points for installation. In this case, use a ruler or a small piece of the frieze itself (baguette). In the case of gypsum friezes, you have to make notches on the ceiling and wall at the installation site - for a solid grip. Scratches are left with a trowel or trowel corner. Together with baguettes, decorative corners are often sold. They solve the problem of sloppy joints at internal and external corners. The installation of decorative elements is facilitated by paper templates and conductors, which are sold together with the frieze. Some corners have flanges for direct flush mounting. Then the installation of the frieze begins with the application of glue to the surface of the wall - under the corner. Then a straight frieze strip is glued to the wall, while simultaneously connecting with a fixed corner. For the installation of baguette use glue for ceramic tiles. Subsequently, the entire perimeter is collected, trimming the excess parts of the slats.

The best manufacturers of expanded polystyrene boards

Masters prefer proven manufacturers, because for fragile material, the first among the indicators is reliability. Armstrong company is engaged in the production of tiles with improved performance properties. She specializes in the production of options of any shape, from classic to custom. The German manufacturer Ormit produces a wide range of moisture resistant options. Pays extra attention to the range of shades and sizes. Antares brand produces a variety of products, starting with all types of ceiling tiles and ending with decorative corners and baseboards. The Chinese company Matrix has focused on the production of tiles of small thickness. Another Chinese manufacturer, Angara, has roughly the same policy. It produces available options with a thickness of up to 8 mm.

What to consider when choosing a tile

The quality of polystyrene foam tiles directly depends on the price, but when choosing a finishing material they are guided by features like a laminated coating, the appearance of the ends and surface, the ability to hide seams. There are also recommendations for choice - with a 3-step approach. Experts advise the first thing to look at the correct geometry. For rectangular products, these are equal sides and perfectly right angles. In case of non-compliance with the criterion, gaps form on the ceiling. The next moment is the outside. It is demanded by the clarity of the relief pattern. Products with noticeable dents are avoided. At the end, look at the density of the tile material. It should be the same throughout the area. It is important to match the polystyrene grains in size, and the smaller they are in principle - the better for density.

Tile selection

Conclusion

Expanded polystyrene is the most common type of polystyrene and at the same time a material for decorating ceilings. It is used in living rooms, corridors, kitchens, bathrooms, almost everywhere. Foam slabs are characterized by universal properties: they are suitable for any climate and buildings, they are easy to process, some modifications have fire-resistant qualities. Most products are suitable for wet cleaning. You can mount the tile yourself, because the execution technique includes simple steps. The crate will not be needed, as well as additional layers, beacons and other devices. Only a primer, strong glue and grout for joints are required. Seamless options are in this sense the most convenient.Mirror and laminated surfaces are also available to consumers. According to the manufacturing technology, polystyrene products are extruded, extruded and injection. When choosing, pay attention to the shape, topography and density of the plates.
