How to make an arch in the doorway with your own hands

Arch in the doorway

The arch is considered one of the key architectural forms. Moreover, despite a long history, vaulted structures remain more like decoration, and in dwellings are not found as often as before. Rounded openings have always been their characteristic feature, and now the variety is limited only by technological capabilities. Nowadays, the use of round elements is relevant for high bulky doors, gates, entrance areas, transitions between rooms. The shape of the arch is also characteristic of the windows of public buildings and houses of improved layout. In general, there is a tendency to more frequent use of arches anywhere. At the same time, they become less and less elegant. Designers continue to integrate the arch into the doorway. Vaults without doors have their own strengths, and practical designs with door leafs are not only convenient, but also retain an attractive design.

Arch - Origin and History

The most ancient ruins with arches are about 4 thousand years old. Thus, the date of the appearance of vaulted structures is considered the beginning of the II millennium BC. e. The impetus for the development of architecture was given by the technologies of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The peoples of precisely these civilizations built the first arches from bricks. They were able to build not only open, but also more complex closed structures. Other states have mastered the techniques, including Greece and Rome. The surviving architecture of ancient Greece and its colonies is represented by countless buildings. When Roman times came, much was destroyed, but new structures appeared. The peak of the development of ancient architecture falls precisely on the period of the Roman Empire. Arches were erected everywhere, and the engineering complexity of structures increased at times. The environment for the development of architecture was the architecture of Gothic and Renaissance.

Features of rooms with arches

Rooms with arches are often left without doors, but given the practical inconvenience of such a layout, residents have to use alternatives. In places with high traffic, they design structures with an empty target, and doors are installed for personal rooms. In large houses, the arches of the guest rooms are decorated with curtains. Side racks are made of improved materials, ideally made of logs. A simple flat box does not look the best.The vaults are made more decorative against the background of other elements. All these features do not relate to arched entrances to the kitchen, spans in the corridors of brezhnevka. They can be simple and harmoniously fit into the atmosphere. At the same time, the vast majority of structures are characterized by the absence of a threshold, although theoretically it can even improve the appearance of the arch. Vaulted openings are active, that is, connecting several rooms, and passive, opening a view of several rooms at once.

Advantages and disadvantages of arched structures in the doorway

The arched passage in the wall is primarily a decorative technique. Moreover, the very idea of decoration is often developed, and instead of an arch, housing receives something else, for example, doors with a deaf glass transom. In addition to aesthetic benefits, note the increased stability of vaulted openings. They crack less often, to a lesser extent warp and do not undergo shrinkage. The frame of arched structures, in turn, has greater strength. Do not forget about the additional features for airing. Additional square meters in the doorways will improve ventilation during the hot season. At the same time, the design disadvantages are felt even at the installation stage, because the assembly technology is more complicated than that of square boxes. This disadvantage is associated with a high price. It should also be understood the practical inconvenience of open archways in terms of sound and heat insulation, visual accessibility of the room.
Some more useful qualities of arches:

  • zoning;
  • visual expansion of space and raising of ceilings.

Types and forms of arches

Distribution received:

  1. Classic.
  2. Romance.
  3. Trapezoid.
  4. Portal.
  5. Modern.
  6. Ellipse.
  7. The halfark.

Each version of the arch has its own name, most often logically associated with the form. The classic arch is called an ordinary arch with a rectangular span and a semicircular overlap.They harmoniously merge into the interior or exterior and make the space more perfect from a geometric and aesthetic points of view. Romance is a rectangular arch with rounded upper corners. Suitable for wide openings. The name "trapezoid" was assigned to the arches with the corresponding intrados. But a span like a portal is almost no different from a rectangular opening. Moreover, his name is the same as that of the ceiling - the latter is also called the portal. Arched structures of the "modern" type act as a transitional form between the classics and the portal. The ellipse, which has a slightly larger radius of curvature, is practically no different from it. It should be noted and semi-arches - a small architectural form in which an arch and a straight wall are adjacent.

Round

This is the name of arches with a semicircular or rounded overlap, as well as different options with a pronounced pattern "under the circle", and even buildings that exactly repeat this figure. Round vaults have become popular recently, as they are increasingly used in various ceremonies and processions. They are collected and decoratively decorated for events in the spirit of the "English wedding". It is a round metal structure with supports and openwork forms that cover with floral arrangements. Round arches become the backdrop for the bride and groom. However, round vaults are the same openings with circular overlap that people see almost every day. Arches with rounded entablature are widespread in ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome. If in our time, arches have portals only with an inner side (intrados), then at that time they often also had an outer (extrarados).

Rectangular

Rectangular arches - a solution to the problem of design incompatibility. They are appropriate in almost any interior, and especially in the technological and modern, where semicircular arches can be meaningless.Straight lines will correctly complement the decor with the same smooth furniture and transitions. Portal-type structures are formed with four right angles, but the two upper ones are sometimes slightly rounded. Platbands are made wide, with a pronounced volume, and glued lumber is suitable for this. This is cheaper when compared with a solid tree. Systems are also assembled from drywall. Work with these materials is done according to a simple scheme, and the frame is neat, perfectly flat. The finished passage will not interfere with the decor, but again with even features. Among the door models, sliding and folding are most suitable.

Elliptical arches

Ellipsoidal openings have more stylish qualities than other options - the owners will be able to emphasize their good taste. Elliptical structures are a kind of intermediate version between a circular vault and a portal. Elements are sometimes erected to the very ceiling, because the larger it is, the better the appearance of the room becomes. An arched doorway with an elliptical top also blends in well with the doors. The form will find a place in an antique setting like a castle interior or in something reminiscent of a loft with industrial decoration. There are options with shoulders, horseshoe-shaped arches and other varieties with special surroundings. On elliptical arches, the romantic version with a flatter top and the modernist style with a pointed one are in many respects similar. Without elliptical shapes, masterpieces in the Art Nouveau style - the modernist direction, would have been impossible.

Trapezoidal arches

The advantage of the option is ease of implementation, and at the same time, this shape is more perfect than a simple rectangle. The trapezoidal passage contains a certain geometry, which would not hurt to beat other lines. Elements such as the shape of the ceiling, various angles, countertops and columns.In terms of decorative possibilities, the trapezoid is slightly inferior to the rounded options, but much still depends on the configuration of the upper element, its size, severity and proportions. The lower or upper corners of the intrados can be rounded. The trapezoidal arch can even be altered into a sophisticated version with an abstract angular pattern. The increased stability of the upper transverse beam is used in long corridors-aisles and structures of heavy building materials, and these include houses made of logs and timber.

Curly arches

When creating something like this, you should "weigh" all the points about the decorative component and compatibility with design and furniture. A bold and interesting solution to a sketch in reality may look out of place and strange. This is especially true for cascading options with several slots. In practice, arches with a restrained patterned pattern and without additional holes have proven themselves well. Compositions are formed in studio apartments with a distinct design direction, in retro or space style, for example. Many try to repeat the idea in a less accented interior, and sometimes it does not work. Nevertheless, adherence to simple design canons opens up possibilities for universal application. You should start by adding one, at most two elements to the arc: an even figure or curved lines. It is better to maintain symmetry. Compositions are equally good, both asymmetric and balanced.

Dimensions

Height is limited only by the ceiling level - there must be a margin. The parameter is also coordinated with other doorways, so as not to violate the integrity and organic design. For round and figured shapes, an exception is actually possible, since this is a prominent element. The width is selected in connection with the main idea of the interior decoration, its promise.We are talking about the severity of the interior space and the openings between the rooms. As for the exact parameters, the height of the top of the arch (boom lift) should end at a level no higher than 2.9 m for a room with a height of 3.2–3.3 m and up to 2.2 m for a room with an indicator of 2.5 m For a conventional arch, the ratio of height and width is 2: 1 or 3: 1 as harmonious. For design ideas, the indicator does not matter. If it was not possible to choose an individual option, it is better to dwell on a ratio of 1.6: 1 - a ratio calculated even in the Middle Ages.

Arch materials

Apply:

  • tree;
  • timber;
  • drywall;
  • a rock;
  • brick.

The first arches were collected only from stone, and this is how the famous masonry methods appeared. Now stone is used only with highly effective fixing and adhesive materials. In recent years, drywall has been popular. The design is assembled on a metal frame and is often supplemented with shelves, niches. The resulting systems are suitable for the organization of built-in lighting. Low cost combined with all this explains the high demand among consumers. Wood options, in turn, have advantages in terms of environmental friendliness and strength. At the same time, mold can ruin the look of the box. For an interior, simpler arches are assembled from light materials imitating stone, wood or something else. The last option, a brick arch, will not be easy to assemble, and you will need to work a lot on its appearance.

Materials for decorative decoration

On budget options, plastic corners are installed, sometimes they are coated with facing material, and the ends are finished with a decorative molding. In the most expensive interior options add stucco molding. The area of the stone castle is often emphasized. They also resort to finishing with valuable rocks and minerals. For example, travertine, marble, granite, malachite and the like. The doorway and platbands are sure to decorate the luxurious interior.In this sense, Venetian plaster is a win-win. If the design corresponds to a less "flashy" style, then you can do the geometric component. In the Art Nouveau style, decorative strips and overlays, glass are used. Simple furnishing does not require any decorative ideas. It is enough to emphasize the texture of the arch material, and the space near it is finished with flexible acrylic tiles.

Design and tasks of the arch

The element performs the functions of:

  1. Aesthetic: masking imperfections, visual expansion of the space, improving the interior.
  2. Practical: strengthening walls, storing things (figured compositions), dividing zones, combining rooms.

Vaulted passages are usually embedded and shaped. The second subspecies includes options with side columns, original ceilings, additional curly holes, sectional structure. Intrados and racks are decorated with a decorative relief. Without beautiful arches, it is difficult to imagine a classic interior with motifs of the 18th century, which remains relevant for large private estates. With a vault, you can strengthen the wall or organize new aisles / corridors between rooms at a convenient angle. Arched compositions become a new place of storage: the surface of the room can be freed from excessive load, for example, from unnecessary decorative objects. The arch system will combine several rooms into one thoughtful composition. In large studios, these structures are used as space delimiters.

Room zoning element

The object performs the zoning function in 2 senses: as a way of combining space and as a separator. Apartments of modern layout have many combined rooms and short hallways. Therefore, their space should be divided into segments for rest, lunch, cooking, working at a computer, watching TV.In addition to such ideas for use, the arch will come in handy in the vestibule, which are increasingly "appearing" next to the living rooms. Vaulted structures easily solve the problem of inefficient use of space near doors: it is enough to remove them and make a free passage or hang curtains. Arches also regulate the level of isolation. A narrow arch in the wall gives a high rate, and a wide arch reduces it. The gate will connect two rooms into one more than half a wall, removing the sense of border.

Arch as a bright accent in the interior

The arch is made part of the architecture, but if you have the time, desire and money, it will be possible to form one of the pillars of design from it. Something like this can be created with the help of improvised things. Near the arch, they choose a place for shelves or make an integrated option. The sections are then filled with colorful books. The passage can be designed as a continuation of the wall drawing, or rather, as its missing part. Artificial neon lights are becoming more and more popular, because it turns the simplest room into an unusual place. The solution will be quite normal for arched structures. Under the eco-style, add climbing plants, and it is better to make an arch with open racks to entwine them with stems. The most expressive will be a figured arch with slots. This creates abstract combinations, which, however, will take a long time to choose: if the decision is unsuccessful, the situation can become ridiculous.

Elimination of defects

Cracked or broken ceiling above the door can be turned into an arched arc or a kind of decorative entablature. If the problem is big, and it falls in the middle of the wall, then adding an arched opening almost to the ceiling will be justified. Non-standard arches often appear against the background of significant wall imperfections, which are easier to eliminate with an arch rather than layers of different materials. Ventilation pipes and old beams spoil the design, so they are often sheathed with materials such as drywall.An opening with a vault will just underline the covered object, turning all this into a meaningful composition. Extra joints and other defects of the arches themselves are hidden with the help of decorative locks. It also happens that the door frame has a serious curvature. The door frame can be disassembled, and instead of it - make a portal.

Arch in the hallway interior

Arched structures well mask the problem of uneven height against the wall.

Utilitarian purpose

If the opening is in a thick wall, then next to it you can organize several niches for practical use. First you need to clarify whether the wall is a carrier. If yes, then get information about the restrictions, and if not, determine how strong it is. If the data is positive, then in the surfaces they organize a cascade of small windows - for better lighting, ventilation and storage. In niches, whether deaf or through, put frequently used items. In private houses, the arched passages themselves sometimes reach 3-meter thickness, and there will not be superfluous a small sofa and poufs. Portals next to the kitchen have racks with shelves. In the cramped studio apartments, arches with a narrow aisle and countertop are made between the living room and the kitchen. Vaulted openings without doors - a place for additional artificial lighting.

How to make a drywall arch with your own hands - a step-by-step master class

Main stages:

  1. Installation of the frame.
  2. Installation of an arc-shaped fragment of drywall (for a rounded version).
  3. Installation of the outer layer.

First, cut out the U-shaped metal guides and mount them in the opening. We install 2 of these profiles in the upper part. If the walls are wooden - we use self-tapping screws not shorter than 5 cm, and we maintain a step between them at the level of 10-12 cm. We select the size of the profiles taking into account the performance of the gypsum plasterboard (drywall). We cut out the arcs on the sheets and fasten the first to the opening with an electric screwdriver. A material thickness of 12.5 mm corresponds to 35 mm screws.Next, we fix the second sheet and cut out one metal profile to both drywall fragments. We give a flat bar of metal a curved shape - with the help of many small incisions. We fasten them to the lower ends of the guide profiles installed at the very beginning. Then we cut out a rectangular sheet from unused drywall and make it flexible with the help of notches, after wetting the material. After that, we form another, the same part. We mount improvised elements on drywall fragments in the arc of the opening. After that, it remains to trim the sides and give the structure a final look.

Conclusion

Historically, the vaults were one of the most "geometric" elements of architecture. Architectural thought reached an absolute peak during the time of Gothic architecture. Arches resembled works of art. In Rome, and even in Ancient Egypt, there were also interesting forms. Nowadays, people are trying to improve the interior of their homes using the same vaulted structures. Characteristic types of openings are distinguished, from classic, ellipse to trapezoid, semi-arch and portal. Indoor arches improve aesthetics and help in space planning. Options with doors at the same time solve the issue of isolating the room from the external environment. Arched openings erected from drywall, wood or stone. In modern fashionable styles, technological materials are used for decoration, but conservative trends will require beautiful decor. In addition to external beauty, the arch is useful in that it qualitatively performs a supporting function.
