Can tiles be laid on a wooden floor

Can tiles be laid on wooden floors

During repairs or during construction from scratch, materials of different properties are often combined. Many masters have doubts as to whether it is possible to lay tiles on a wooden floor. Carrying out surface finishing with your own hands, it is important not only to prepare the base, but also to choose the right laying technology, in accordance with the characteristics of the room, its purpose. A competent approach will help to avoid troubles during the operation of the floor, extend its service life.

Can tiles be laid on a wooden base: compatibility of two materials

You can combine ceramic tiles and wood, but many builders and homeowners do not consider this rational. A tiled wooden base will become cold and slippery, lose its precious naturalness. The negative consequences after installation include the complete absence of penetrating air. The tree will quickly begin to deteriorate, will come into mobility, which will increase the likelihood of cracking tiles. Due to the large difference in the service life of the materials, the tiled floor will quickly become worthless.

Lightweight tiles are often laid on a wooden base to reduce moisture. In order for the floor covering to last for a long time, it is necessary to foresee an installation method in advance. In new buildings, it is better to use a cement screed. Also consider the weight of the adhesive. The pluses of the compatibility of wood and tiles on the floor include the evenness of the surfaces. Preparatory work will be required only if the wooden coating is old.

The newly equipped timber, plank floor is not suitable for tile installation. The material must lie down, get used to the operating conditions for 2-3 years.

Complexity and styling features

Natural wood has its own specific characteristics, physical properties. This causes certain operating requirements. Wood is a porous, hygroscopic material, which presents certain difficulties when laying tiles. Tiles can serve for decades without special treatment, which cannot be said about wood.

Often floor tiles are used to protect wooden floors in the bathroom, in the kitchen, in the bath. The tiled floor, laid on dry boards, will be deformed in a few months, and the seams will crack.

Tiles do not make good contact with surfaces that expand or contract over time.Priming a wooden base, laying waterproofing will help to fix the situation. Rotten boards are covered with sheets of chipboard. Slots at the joints of slabs and walls are carefully blown with mounting foam to provide additional strength to the base.

In which cases it is impossible to lay tiles on a tree

Tiles can only be laid on a flat, solid base. If it is impossible to achieve this from the old surface, it is better to abandon the undertaking. Tiles are not recommended to be combined with wood for the following reasons:

  • Poor adhesion to each other. Even when using special mastics, the tiled floor can remain movable. Old wood material will deform, which will reduce the strength of adhesives.
  • The tree is prone to expand even with minimal moisture. Tile and glue for fixing it also have this feature, but to a much lesser extent.
  • In rooms subject to constant moisture, the floor of the boards and tiles will be short-lived. In any case, the liquid will penetrate through the tile seams. It will be impossible to carry out the processing of wood with moisture protective compounds.
  • Wood supporting structures will shrink over time, which will lead to cracking of tile joints and its displacement. Adhesive mixtures will lose plasticity, the tile will begin to lag.

Types of wood flooring

Modern wooden floor coverings for tiles vary in purpose, structure, complexity of installation. The mounting method is standard, preparation procedures will only be excellent. In any case, the surface should be as flat as possible. The features of a particular room should also be taken into account. There are several options for a wooden coating that are suitable for tiling:

  1. Empty log flooring. Wooden cross-bars perform the supporting function of the whole object. If they are not damaged and are located close enough to each other, you can install the tile directly on them.Leaky elements are replaced with new ones, all parts are treated with protective compounds.
  2. Particleboard, plywood with and without lags. The sheet material is installed to protect the lag and with the aim of further leveling the floor. Due to the content of glue, which can dissolve and soften, materials are not suitable for tiles in rooms with high humidity and with frequent temperature changes.
  3. New log floor. The surface is cleaned of dust, treated with a protective stain and covered with a moisture resistant layer. Then screw the floor leveling plates with screws, which will not allow the tile to move under load. It can be plywood, moisture-proof drywall.
  4. The surface of the boards for repair. Loose rotten boards must be replaced. The floor should not bend when pressed. After the elements are repaired, they are poured with moisture-resistant impregnation, covered with polyethylene and fixed to the mastic of the OSB plate.

Ways to prepare a wooden base

The key to the quality of combining two materials is smooth surfaces. Although the installation of floor tiles to wood is not the best option, with a good preparation of the foundation, a beautiful reliable floor can come out. There are several ways to align.

Wood floor preparation

Dry leveling

You can use some materials to align the base in the bathroom or hallway for laying tiles. It can be ready-made adjustable sets, mounted on screws or plastic supports. Also lay out an additional plywood layer on existing elements of the tree.

Chipboards are used more often because they have minimal linear mobility. It is not advisable to fix them with screws, it is better to take a two-component adhesive on a polyurethane basis. Before installation, the edges of the sheets are polished, the joints are treated with a special sealant, the surface is painted with a stain. Dry leveling has the following advantages:

  • It makes it possible to use heat-insulating materials (polystyrene foam, expanded clay);
  • Does not exert a large load on a wooden base;
  • Prepare the surface, pick up the material as soon as possible;
  • The disadvantage associated with lowering the ceilings can be corrected with the help of an equipped staircase between the wall and the floor.

Dry wood floor leveling

Screed

The method is suitable for rooms with wooden floors, the surface of which does not have the ability to adhere to high-quality ceramic, vinyl tiles. Before starting the installation of a floating floor, it is necessary to repair the entire plank base, replace leaking logs, and grind the top layer. Arrangement of screed on a wooden base takes place in several stages:

  1. Remove the old flooring up to the logs or timber. Replace unusable, deformed boards with new ones. If the distance between the elements exceeds 30 cm, it is filled with bulk material. Then passes the treatment with antiseptics.
  2. At the next stage, the flooring is collected for filling. To organize the ventilation of the underground space, boards 4 cm wide are laid out at a distance of 10 cm from each other. Moisture-resistant plywood is installed across the boards, fixed with self-tapping screws.
  3. The next layer is waterproofing. More often used materials based on bitumen, paraffin. They are lapped and with release on the walls. A damper tape is glued between the floor and the wall.
  4. Now pour a self-leveling solution. It can be purchased ready-made or made independently by mixing sand, water and water glass.

The screed for wooden floors for tiles can be made on the basis of cement with the addition of fiber. In this case, after pouring, the surface must be leveled and rubbed. Installation of tiles is possible after complete drying, after 3 weeks.

Screed on a wooden floor

Leveling without screed

If the wooden floor is new, the logs did not have time to deteriorate and do not require repair, you can even out the surface for laying tiles without screed.This may be a minor treatment or the creation of a new surface. To do this, you will need a grinder, electric jigsaw, tape measure, level, wood putty, primer mixes.

The easiest way to level a whole wooden floor is to use a looping machine. The complexity of the method lies only in the fact that only professional craftsmen have special equipment. Do it yourself with a planer.

After the top layer of the tree is removed, all small cracks and joints must be sealed with putty. The acrylic mixture will not be visible under the tile, so choosing a shade is optional. Then the surface is treated with stain and primed.

If the boards are durable, but have cracks and chips, the irregularities can be removed using putty based on sawdust and PVA glue. The composition is distributed on the surface, allow time to dry and grind the treated area.

Floor waterproofing

To eliminate any deflection of the tiled floor during operation, it should be made as rigid as possible. Tiles laid on a wooden frame must be durable, all parts intact, tightly adjacent to the walls. As a waterproofing under the rough facing, cementing, polymer, bitumen compositions are often used. Elastic mixtures have excellent adhesion to wood and tile adhesive. Waterproofing is carried out by a roller, rolling out liquid mixtures on a plank surface, going to the walls.

For unstable substrates, it is better to choose materials based on cement. Cast waterproofing is carried out by pouring the surface with a solution. The composition of such mixtures also includes reinforcing fibers, polymer plasticizers. In addition, it does not need to be glued to the base.

Increasing moisture resistance by gluing is the easiest process. But for this, the wooden floor must be perfectly flat. Use surfaced or self-adhesive products. Roll materials do not adhere well to tile adhesive.More often, a screed is poured over the roofing material or polyethylene.

Waterproofing is a good alternative to coating. The work is easy to carry out independently, due to the ease of the method and the availability of materials. Boards for tiles are covered with liquid bitumen and mastic in three approaches, allowing the previous layer to dry.

Which glue to choose

For work with ceramics and wood, a two-component adhesive is suitable. The composition of the mixture includes polyurethane resin and a hardener, which makes its adhesive parameters an order of magnitude higher than other options. You can use a ready-made mixture or mix the components yourself using a drill and a special nozzle. Polyurethane resin adhesive is suitable for use within just an hour. You can also stick tiles to wood on the following compounds:

  • Silicone sealant. It guarantees an excellent result, protects the tile from cracking with minor fluctuations and mechanical stresses;
  • Tile mortar. Gluing will be especially strong if you use gypsum board sheets as a layer between the boards and tile;
  • Acrylic putty. The mixture is applied to the tiles using the spot method, which increases the adhesion of materials. The composition of the building paste is similar to liquid nails. You can stick on it any tile;
  • PVA glue. Suitable for gluing tiles to timber or large boards. Thin wood, plywood, chipboard in contact with glue is deformed due to moisture.

Installation of the "warm floor" system on a wooden floor

Modern technology allows you to make your home warm and comfortable at no extra cost. A rational and economical choice is the installation of a warm floor. So that it does not break and lasts a long time, it is necessary to take into account some factors when choosing it. Installing a warm floor on wooden logs is more effective if you use the lay method of laying. To increase heat transfer, metal plates are placed under the pipes.Concreting is completely excluded, since it will have an unacceptably large load on the structure.

A dry screed is also used, but it is less effective due to poor thermal conductivity of the material. Its main advantage is quick installation, lack of dust when performing work. If this method is chosen, it is necessary to take a minimum step between the pipes in order to exclude the formation of warm, cold spots on the tile. A difficult, expensive option is the installation of baffles that contribute to raising heat up.

There are several ways to lay pipes when installing a warm floor on a tree. You can build channels using modules or rails. In the first case, these are finished products with already completed recesses. To implement the second, you will need to independently fill the rails of the desired size. Also use a mixed installation method.

Conclusion

Installation of the floor surface with the combination of tiles and wood in the house may seem strange due to the complete run-up of characteristics and properties of materials. But there are many technologies for laying the floor in this way. To get an excellent result with self-assembly, you need to take into account the purpose of the room, the grade and type of wood, choose a high-quality adhesive, follow the advice of specialists and follow the instructions.
