DIY brazier: how to make metal and brick

DIY barbecue

A man from ancient times was engaged in cooking. It all started with an ordinary bonfire around which stones were laid. They served as a kind of "stove" for frying meat. As society developed, new devices appeared. As a result, they began to fry barbecue on the grill, which has become an integral part of outdoor recreation.

There are several versions of the origin of the product. According to one of them, the device was invented in the seventh century BC. e. Scythian healer and sage Anaharsis. Another insists that a roasting pan originated in the Ancient East. This is indirectly confirmed by the presence of a single name for the subject of all eastern peoples. However, such a barbecue was a design in the form of a copper bowl mounted on the legs. Also, the product had two handles that serve to comfortably move the subject, a hemispherical lid.

What should be the brazier - characteristic

The quality of barbecue cooked on the grill depends on the design of the product. The main parameters of the structure are its dimensions, material of manufacture. To calculate them, you need to decide on the following factors:

  • Option for cooking meat. It can be strung on a skewer, put on a barbecue grill. When constructing the brazier, they rely on optimal sizes. The standard size of the skewer is 50 cm, its working part is 35 cm. Based on these parameters, the width of the product should be less than 40 cm. The classic lattice has a size of 18x28 cm, but it is easier to choose the size of a roasting pan. The depth of the product depends on the raw material burned in it, the distance to the coal of which should be 8 cm. If charcoal is used, then the depth is 20 cm, for firewood - 25 cm. When choosing the length, the amount of fried meat obtained from one load is taken into account. You can place one skewer on a 10 cm plane. For gratings - the optimal length is 40 cm. Height - is selected for a specific person, depends on his height, ranges from 75 - 125 cm.Thickness affects the durability of the structure, its weight.
  • The location of the barbecue is another criterion. For a country house, cottages it is best to use a stationary structure. The product is made of thick metal, brick, cast iron, such raw materials increase its service life. The frypot intended for transportation is made of thin metal and often folds up.

To get the most comfortable barbecue, in its manufacture should take into account standard norms, combine them with personal wishes.

Types of barbecue

The elementary design of the barbecue is a rectangular box mounted on the legs, made of metal. If you understand the types of products, then they are much more. The roaster can be portable, stationary. Made of different materials: stone, brick, metal. There are models for home and restaurant, such as electric and gas, respectively. However, they do not give the campfire a natural smell. Consider the existing types in more detail:

  1. Stationary. It is a massive, heavy construction. For the manufacture of using brick, metal, stone, cast iron, also combine materials. Set in the courtyard of a private house, in the country. It can be in the open air, canopy, in the gazebo. For installation requires a strong foundation: concrete, paving slabs, stone savage, etc. May have additional elements, on which the pan is installed, put the skewer.
  2. Figurative. Such products are made of sheet steel. It is convenient to use while relaxing in a forest, on a lake, a river. By type of construction are divided into folding and collapsible (transformers). The brazier is very convenient, takes up little space, easily fits in the trunk of a car.
  3. Demountable. Refers to metal structures. Its main feature is the way the elements are fastened together. No welding is used here, the parts are fastened to each other with bolts.
  4. Mobile.The design can be stationary or collapsible. Instead of legs use a wheel. It can be stored in the utility room, if necessary, rolled out onto the street.

DIY barbecue

For the construction of the product, you need certain skills. You must be able to work with welding equipment, a grinder, a drill. In addition, you will need a drawing, measuring tools, metal corners, fittings, sheet metal. Scrap can often be littered with useless trash in a private courtyard, in which case it will be easier to create a brazier with your own hands, and expenses for this venture will also be reduced.

Advantages and disadvantages of metal barbecue

The brazier is found everywhere. Some have purchased models, others prefer hand-made ones. Products are fully welded, twisted with bolts. But all of them have certain features, their advantages and disadvantages. Let us dwell on them in more detail, consider the main advantages of metal structures:

  • Cost. If we talk about products made by hand, then even with the purchase of all metal components, the price of such an item will be significantly lower than the factory price. If we evaluate the material, then the cost of iron and steel is several times less than copper and stainless steel.
  • Simplicity of design. The main models are represented by a box located on the legs. After its installation, it remains only to fall asleep and rekindle firewood or coals, put a skewer with meat.
  • Security. From the temperature obtained by burning raw materials, the metal does not melt, does not burn. It also retains heat, which contributes to uniform roasting of meat.
  • Mobility and functionality. Among a wide variety of models there are compact collapsible, which can be used anywhere: in the courtyard, outdoors, beach, terrace. Some products have additional elements, in the form of stands for firewood, hooks for skewers.

Among the disadvantages, the susceptibility of the metal to oxidation can be distinguished. Some models made of thin sheet steel can quickly rust. Also, hand-made products do not always have an attractive appearance.

Device and principle of operation

In general terms, what constitutes a barbecue is clear from its definition. If we consider in more detail, then the standard models have a rectangular box made of steel. It consists of four side walls and a bottom - the foundation of the entire brazier. The bottom wall is made thickened, which increases the durability of the subject. In the side partitions, holes are drilled closer to the base. Such actions lead to improved air circulation, heat is not concentrated at one point, evenly distributed in the duct.

The rectangular design has legs. Usually there are four. These elements are made of reinforcing rods of different diameters, metal corners, forged products, round, shaped pipes. Strength and type of material is selected taking into account the load, the preferences of the owner. Some legs can be pointed from below, others have a flat base, it all depends on where they are installed.

The brazier has a straightforward working principle. Charcoal, firewood is laid at the bottom of an iron box and set on fire. After the burning of raw materials and the appearance of coals, they are evenly distributed on the bottom. Next, lay the skewers with pieces of meat strung on them, periodically turning them until the food is ready.

Types of structures

The lineup is constantly growing, new inventions appear. They can be simple, have a complex structure. But all metal barbecues can be attributed to certain types:

  1. Disposable. They can be built from any means at hand. There are factory options made of steel half a millimeter thick.
  2. Stationary Large product. Installed in specially equipped places.May have a roof or located under a canopy. Often contains additional devices: chimney, smokehouse, different coasters.
  3. Collapsible. They differ in the way they fasten elements (latches, bolts). They have several design options. The simplest are two p-shaped metal racks. They are installed between the bonfire, skewers are laid on top. The most common form is that all elements are connected using grooves. Consists of five sheets and legs. The original form of collapsible braziers is presented in the form of a suitcase, which stores not only all components of the product, but also skewers.
  4. Folding. Differ in an x-shaped look. The principle of operation when folding is similar to that used for camping stools.

Determine the model, material and size

Any work begins with a plan that grows into a project. It displays all the smallest details. A good drawing is half the work done. The scheme should contain elements of the planned structure. Having presented, having chosen the most suitable model, we proceed to implement it on paper. If you have the skills, you can independently carry out the drawing, use special programs, download it on the Internet, and find it in specialized literature.

At the next stage, it is necessary to select the material for the work that is most suitable for the selected model of the fryer. Depending on the available funds, the wishes of the owner, you can make a stainless, steel, forged structure.

When choosing the dimensions of the product should be guided by the standard parameters that are given above. Consider your height in order to correctly plan your height for comfortable work with a future subject. If a miniature model is created, then all the parameters will have to be reduced, sacrifice convenience.

Necessary tools and materials

Before starting work, they make an audit of the tools, and if there is a shortage, they purchase them.To carry out activities you will need:

  • Measuring instruments, special marker, chalk;
  • Grinder, drill;
  • A set of discs for metal drills;
  • Angle grinder;
  • Manual bending machine;
  • Welding machine to create a stationary structure.

In addition to the tools, it will also be necessary to prepare the materials from which we are constructing the brazier:

  • Sheet metal, pieces of steel (can be welded) from 2 mm thick for portable barbecues, from 5 mm for stationary. Minimum values shown. If you want to increase the life of the structure, use a thicker raw material. If the roasting pan does not consist of a whole sheet, it is advisable to make its base (bottom) reinforced.
  • Metal corners, fittings, round, profile pipes used for legs. Corners can strengthen the joint of partitions.
  • Forged elements, the base of old washing machines, grilles, other components that can be distinguished, decorate the product.

Welding process

Having a drawing on hand, having prepared the necessary tools and materials for work, we proceed to the process of constructing the brazier with our own hands. We assemble the construction by the standard method, consider it step by step:

  1. We take a sheet of metal, and, drawing on the drawing, use a chalk and a marker to mark the bottom and side partitions of the planned item on it.
  2. With a grinder, we cut off the unused metal parts along the contour, leaving only the necessary ones. The result is a detailed view of the product.
  3. Using a listogib, or cutting the bending places with a grinder, we turn the sheet of metal into a rectangular box.
  4. Now we pick up a welding machine (preferably an inverter) and weld the joints of the walls, if necessary, welding the bends cut by the grinder.
  5. If the metal is thin, we strengthen the structure by welding metal corners at the corners.
  6. We drill holes for air circulation on the side walls, and also cut out recesses for skewers by marking.
  7. At the final stage, it remains only to weld the legs. They can be welded directly to the base or to the side walls. It is convenient to use both corners and pipes of different shapes. Interesting options are obtained using the wheel. If a wheel is attached to the foot, the product can be easily moved.

The considered method is the simplest. There are still options when there is a lot of welding (the structure is welded from separate pieces), and the formation of a brazier on the frame from corners.

Welding process

It is impossible to take the considered version of welded structures with you for hunting, nature, fishing. For these purposes, a collapsible version of the fryer is necessary. Factory models are made mainly of thin metal, so the brazier, made by yourself, is much more practical. The phased creation of such a product is as follows:

  1. If you do not have the skills to create such structures, it is better to initially make a cardboard layout, assemble it, after transferring the contours of the parts to a sheet of metal, attaching the finished cardboard patterns to it.
  2. We cut out all the components with a grinder, it is best to use diamond discs. In the process, difficult places come across: spikes, grooves, cuts. They can be carefully modified with a metal file.
  3. Next, we drill air ducts on the partitions.
  4. Depending on the type of connecting elements (tenon groove, bolt), in the details of the construction we drill holes for the bolts or cut out, we cut out the necessary fastening outlines.
  5. We can immediately cut the legs in the side walls with which they will be one, we use a corner with the type of connection as with the whole structure.

Making barbecue from a metal barrel

One of the simple options for creating a brazier. At the same time, it turns out to be light, retains heat well, and is quite cheap. You can make an iron structure in several ways.For example, cut the barrel lengthwise, make ventilation holes and cutouts for it in the skewer, place it on the legs. A more complex option is to use a solid barrel, when one part of it is a hinged lid, a door. It turns out a closed barbecue. Consider in detail the manufacturing technology:

  1. Cut the barrel. There are two ways: halve; to retreat a couple of centimeters from each edge and cut a quarter of the side surface.
  2. We clean the edges, align the dents.
  3. We fix the door handle to the cut-out part serving as a cover. We connect the parts of the barrel with the help of door hinges.
  4. We make a chimney. To do this, drill a hole in the barrel from its end side, it must coincide with the diameter of the pipe used. Next, we select a pipe whose length is determined by the volume of the container (half a meter is enough for a container), its mode is in two parts (in the ratio 1/3 and 2/3) at an angle of 45 degrees. Next, we connect the obtained elements at a right angle, carefully weld the joint.
  5. We make a mount for installing a grill grate.
  6. We install the design on the legs.

The nuances of making a brazier from a gas cylinder

The technology for creating a brazier is similar to that used in the construction of a product from a barrel. The difference is the preparation of containers for work. So, in order to get the design from the cylinder, you must perform the following steps:

  1. We select a gas cylinder, its volume should not be less than fifty liters. We begin its preparation. It consists of several stages: we completely release gas or its residues; unscrew the valve; we pump water through the hose, which should completely fill the entire volume.
  2. Next, we act by analogy with the barrel. We cut out a part of the case, fasten the components with loops, install a handle on the door.
  3. We weld bars for barbecue, we make cuts for skewers.
  4. We drill holes for ventilation and a hole for the chimney.
  5. If necessary, weld the handles, install the brazier on the legs.

Tips for the care and maintenance of the barbecue

Assembly of the construction is indispensable. The next step is to clean the frypot from dirt and rust. To do this, you can use special fluids, also walk on the surface with a grinder, sandpaper. If you want to give the product an attractive look, it is painted with heat-resistant paints that can withstand temperatures of 800 degrees.

During the operation of the product, after the preparation of the barbecue, soot from the inside of the walls is not cleaned. In the future, he will give kebabs a special smell.

Barbecue with stove

When using the barbecue in the yard, in nature, it is necessary to clear the place under it. Remove dried grass, remove branches, needles leaves. You should also have a container of sand, water. In order to divert smoke that interferes with enjoying relaxation, an exhaust hood is installed on the product.

Do-it-yourself BBQ

The classic iron barbecue is good in its own way. However, owners of private houses, summer cottages give preference to a more convenient construction. The brick oven fits well with the overall design of the site. It can be built in accordance with the style of the house.

To equip a stationary recreation area is much more expensive. Massive design can become an accent composition, attract the attention of guests. Also, the brick retains heat well. The stove can be functional: used as a grill, barbecue; consist of a fireplace; have a cauldron on the stove. Often, not only meat is cooked on a stone barbecue. For example, in a cauldron, pilaf is stewed, sausages and other food are heated on a barbecue.

Even an inexperienced bricklayer will be able to build simple structures with his own hands. To do this, you need to prepare a project, drawing. Next, you should review the availability of materials and tools, if necessary, buy. Make a foundation, build a structure.

Features and types of designs

The simplest type of brick barbecue is a temporary structure with a primitive device. The product does not require a foundation, bricks are not bound by mortar. They are lightweight. The furnace compartment is located under the grill or skewers, the main thing is that the sheet metal is heat-resistant. Such a structure has an unsightly decorative appearance, it is not protected from atmospheric precipitation.

More interesting are the options for massive structures that have a complex configuration. In shape they can be rectangular, round, angular, different elegant formats. Products may have a visor, located under the roof, canopy, stand in the open. Despite the difference in design, they all have a similar structure, which is expressed in the following elements:

  • Foundation foundation;
  • A basement, represented by several rows of bricks mounted on a base;
  • Roasting pan protected from the wind by the upper side walls;
  • Chimney. This is the main distinguishing feature of brick structures, the exhaust effect depends on its design, the higher it is, the greater the thrust.

There are even large complexes of structures that have a universal purpose. These may include: oven; cauldron; kitchen sink, stainless steel countertop; additional hob; cabinet for storing dishes; one, two compartments for firewood. Sometimes a smokehouse is equipped.

Design and calculation of the amount of materials for construction

The brazier should correspond to the general appearance of the site on which it will be built. In addition, when designing a project, free access to the facility should be ensured, taking into account the type of structure, the safety of the structure, and operational comfort. You should also provide a place to place sand, shovels, hold water. Determine the material for the base: concrete screed, paving slabs, stone. Think about having a roof. Choose a frypot with open or closed type.Decide whether additional extensions are needed in the form of a washstand, countertops, and cauldrons.

It is forbidden to install the furnace on the border with the neighboring site. Smoke through the windows can get into the house, which will entail unpleasant consequences, conflict situations.

After drawing up a diagram of the future construction, you should calculate the amount of materials that will go to the construction of a homemade barbecue. The volume of sand, crushed stone, concrete mortar, brick, calculated by the following formula: v = a * b * c, where v is the amount of material needed (volume), a, b, c are the length, width, height, respectively.

Preparation of the foundation or foundation for the barbecue

For the foundation of a long-term capital construction, a rammed site will not work. The issue should be approached thoroughly. A stationary foundation needs a solid foundation. The preparation of a stable base begins with the removal of the upper part of the soil. To do this, remove up to thirty centimeters of soil. Then agrofibre is laid, a small layer of sand (up to 5 cm) is poured on top, and crushed stone (5-6 cm) is poured. A reinforcing cage is installed. The next step will be pouring concrete mortar and leveling the surface with a rule. As lighthouses, a building profile is used.

The preparation of the concrete mixture is as follows: cement is mixed with sand, in a ratio of one to three. Next, water is poured into the mixture, crushed stone is added. To increase the fluidity of the concrete mixture, liquid soap is added. After pouring, the concrete is allowed to dry, periodically wetting the upper surface with water, in order to avoid the formation of cracks.

Brick laying and decoration

Having finished with the foundation, you can proceed directly to the construction of the furnace. Brick must be selected heat-resistant. So that he does not draw moisture from the concrete, it should be moistened the day before laying. Work begins with the creation of a basement. The first layer of masonry is made solid, completely covering the concrete base.The bricks on each subsequent line should not coincide with the previous seam, otherwise the structure will lose stability. Consider the step-by-step steps:

  1. After determining the thickness of the layer (half, single, one and a half), walls are erected. Laying starts from the corner.
  2. The evenness of the erected surface is periodically checked; a plumb line is used for this.
  3. The solution protruding at the seams is removed, after which the seams are cleaned, deepened, giving them a characteristic look.
  4. Every third row is reinforced with a reinforcing mesh.
  5. After the woodcutter is laid out, a reinforced concrete floor is installed over it, or two layers of brick are laid out. Construction continues.
  6. The metal elements that make up the support for the pallet, on which the wood raw materials will burn, are installed on opposite walls parallel to each other. In addition, the brazier can be mounted directly on the bricks, making a special protrusion into the structure. A barbecue net is also attached.
  7. At the final stage, a chimney is built.
