Two-level ceilings - how to make

Two-level ceilings

Ceiling construction with transition levels - a great solution for accentuation of different styles in the interior. Two-level ceilings allow you to transform the room, delimit it into zones. However, not all designers and experts speak out in support of multi-level models, some categorically do not perceive them, considering them a relic of the past, others prove their importance and expediency.

The structural element has always been given special attention. Overlapping in several tiers has long been created by architects. It is easy to prove, just look at the preserved monuments of archeology and architecture. But such pleasure became available to the masses only with the development of scientific and technological progress. Now everyone can afford to beautifully decorate the house.

Features: pros and cons of two-level ceilings

Two-level structures allow you to create two elevations within the same room. The main feature is the presence of a pronounced step on the ceiling. Ceiling systems simultaneously solve several problems - aesthetic, functional. They are the main advantages of this coating.

Aesthetic function has a strong emotional effect on a person. This is achieved:

  1. the presence of two tiers that create a visual volume;
  2. the use of built-in and pendant lights, decorative lighting;
  3. complex curved, strict direct forms;
  4. using various colors and textures, the design can be entered into any style;
  5. Attractive view of perfectly flat surface.

Good sound insulation - one of the advantages of two-level ceilings

Functional:

  1. the coating allows you to hide engineering communications;
  2. makes it easy to get to the inter-ceiling space;
  3. increases sound insulation, creates a good acoustic environment in the room;
  4. allows zoning of the premises;
  5. hides irregularities of the ceiling partition;
  6. increases the service life of the floor itself.

The disadvantages of the coating include the following points:

  • reducing the height of the room by 10-15 cm;
  • low resistance to mechanical damage to the materials used;
  • high price;
  • complex installation, which not everyone can do with their own hands.

Depending on the chosen configuration, two-level structures can visually raise or lower the ceiling. But for too low ceilings, it is still worth giving up the choice of such a finish.

What materials are they made of?

Two-level systems allow you to connect several rooms of a living room into a single ensemble. Make a smooth transition from the hall to the dining room, from the hallway to the kitchen. The design consists of a profile frame and casing. The following types of raw materials are used for work:

  • drywall;
  • stretch fabric or polyvinyl chloride;
  • PVC panels (plastic);
  • lining;
  • combine different materials.

Interior with suspended two-level ceilings

Each of the listed species has its own distinctive features, characterized by certain qualities. To understand all the nuances, consider each type in more detail. We will analyze their strengths and weaknesses.

Drywall

Drywall can be safely called a classic building material used to create multi-level structures. It is a multilayer sheet consisting of a core (gypsum with filler), coated on both sides with cardboard. Invented in the second half of the 19th century by the American businessman Augustine Sackett. It was patented on May 22, 1884.

Installation of the material is carried out on a metal profile frame. For work use ceiling gypsum cardboard. Lightweight sheet has a thickness of 6-9.5 mm, has good flexibility, suitable for creating complex geometric shapes. When installing the first tier, sheets with a thickness of 8-9.5 mm are used, the second - 6 mm (arch GKL).

Experts do not recommend using drywall in the kitchen and in the bathroom. This is due to its ability to absorb moisture and odors. Excessive humidity is unacceptable, under its action, it swells and deforms. But, if desired, you can use special models GKLV (moisture resistant) and GKLVO (moisture, fire resistant).

Two-level plasterboard ceilings

The advantages of this material include:

  • allows to level any surface;
  • with its help organize the most complex lighting systems;
  • under it, you can make additional insulation and sound insulation;
  • simple designs can be installed with your own hands;
  • he bends well, it is possible to perform any shape and bends.

Disadvantages:

  • cracks appear at the joints with time;
  • it has a decent weight, an assistant will be required to complete the work;
  • low moisture resistance;
  • fragility, fear of mechanical damage.

PVC stretch ceilings and fabrics

The stretch ceiling combines two different technologies that differ depending on the material used: shrink film of polyvinyl chloride, fabric seamless fabric. The first prototypes of this coating have been known since ancient Rome, where the ceilings were draped with fabric. In the usual form, they began to be used from the moment of the invention of PVC film; they became widespread in the 60s in Western Europe.

PVC can be called a decorative type of finish, the fabric in its characteristics is not inferior to drywall, it is in the same niche with it. In addition to the name, both species have one more common characteristic - the principle of fastening. Both designs include a baguette (ceiling, wall), canvas. Consider each type separately:

  1. Fabric. They are a cloth made of polyester thread. Textiles are impregnated with a special mixture based on polyurethane. The finished product is produced in rolls, 5 m wide. The raw material is characterized by a long service life, low weight, it does not emit harmful substances, is safe for human health. However, the cost of the product is quite high, and when flooded, textiles do not hold back water.
  2. Polyvinyl chloride. The basis of the synthetic material is chlorine and petroleum products. With its help, you can get a perfectly flat surface, it is elastic, durable, waterproof. Under the influence of high temperatures emits harmful substances into the air.

Install a PVC coating only if you have good ventilation. Due to the air tightness, liquids remaining after leaks from above will lead to mold, a musty odor.

PVC panels

Plastic panels are made from solid polyvinyl chloride by extrusion. They are lamellas. Their parameters can vary in the following ranges: length 2600 - 3000 mm, thickness - 5-10 mm, width - 100-500 mm. They have a lattice structure. The surface is glossy or matte, represented by the whole spectrum of colors. They appeared on the market in the 90s of the 20th century, and quickly became popular.

In rooms with low ceilings, it is better to install products with a glossy surface in light shades. They allow you to make the ceiling visually higher. Dark - land it. When creating a two-tier system, different colors are used. Panels with a marked seam look good in the bathroom, bathtub. For other rooms, it is recommended to use seamless options, apply wide elements in the work.

The advantages of the material include:

  • light weight;
  • low cost;
  • moisture resistance;
  • neutrality to microorganisms;
  • durability;
  • large selection of shades;
  • sound and heat insulation.

Disadvantages:

  • low strength;
  • do not retain water during flooding;
  • with a sharp change in temperature, the raw material is deformed;
  • the presence of seams.

Lining

The product is presented by a thin covering board. Elements are connected using a spike groove system. Can be mounted on a wooden, metal frame. It is made of natural wood, plastic, MDF. The name appeared during the period of technological progress, when rail transport played an important role. For convenience, passenger cars were sheathed in small planks.

Plastic models are made of polyvinyl chloride mass by extrusion. They have a honeycomb structure, are characterized by the following positive qualities: durability, moisture resistance, low cost, do not require additional processing, do not fade.

Two-level ceiling from the lining

MDF wall paneling is an alternative to wooden and plastic options.It is produced by pressing dry chips. During operation, the material does not emit harmful substances, so it can be used for children's, bedrooms, living rooms.

Natural wood is the most common species. It has a natural pattern, characterized by durability, with special processing, the service life can reach 15-20 years. Like any wood, it is afraid of moisture, high temperatures.

Combined Options

Any person looking at the combined ceiling will understand how attractive he looks, transforms the space. This type of finish is quite in demand. You can execute it in several ways:

  1. Within the same type of cladding. Combining pieces of the same raw material that are different in color and texture, you can make a smooth transition from one tier to another.
  2. Connection of fabric and film stretch fabric on one surface. When using different materials united by one name, a unique design is created. The upper film level with photo printing, surrounded by a textile canvas, will make the interior unforgettable.
  3. Combination of drywall and suspended ceilings. With a combination of various elements, the overall frame is reinforced. There is a wide variety of combinations of these materials:
  • a drywall construction is installed around the perimeter of the ceiling surface, textiles are stretched inside;
  • a protruding or recessed circle in the center of the room, covered with a film and vice versa;
  • longitudinal, diagonal division of various types of finishes.

Ceiling shape

Two-level constructions can have various forms. This moment mainly concerns steps. From the point of view of the mutual arrangement of borders, there are two main groups: straightforward, curved. Consider each view in more detail:

  1. Straightforward. The easiest way to organize a ceiling surface. Straight lines, clear contours are characteristic.The method is used to organize a strict interior where it is necessary to emphasize the seriousness, severity, thoroughness of the owner of the house, his taste preferences.
  2. Curvilinear. More difficult option. When making use smooth, rounded, curved lines. This method allows you to realize various design ideas, create interesting forms. With their help, they perform zoning of rooms in which it is impossible to install partitions.
  3. Combined. From a technical point of view, the most difficult view. Combining straight and curved lines, designers create any ideas. The use of backlighting allows you to focus on existing drawings, shapes, textures.

Stylistic direction

All existing styles of interior decoration can be combined into three main groups: modern, classic, ethnic. In any of them, you can arrange a two-level system. The use of matte, glossy, mirror finishing materials, a combination of smooth and strict lines, play with light, will allow you to design the room in any direction. For clarity, consider several popular design options:

  • Classic. Correct geometric shapes, symmetry are welcome. Several light sources are used on the ceiling, along with a central chandelier, spotlights are located around the perimeter. Stretch structures made of light shades of textile will fit perfectly. White, yellow, gold, beige color is suitable, in some cases it is appropriate to use a black tone.
  • Greek. A good option for a house with high ceilings. On different tiers, you can use shades of the same color. Welcome white, lemon, nut, cornflower blue background. Everything should be a measure, on the transition lines the stucco tape will look great.
  • Rustic. A mix of American country with a Russian hut. It uses natural, natural materials.In this style, the surface lined with a lining made of wood will look great.
  • Minimalism. The lines on the ceiling are straight. Forms are strict. White color. In the center you can use one chandelier, often there are no lamps at all, they are placed on the walls. Painted drywall designs are suitable.

Color spectrum

Each color evokes certain emotions in a person and has a psychological effect on him. The correct shade will help to relax, feel cozy and comfortable, so the choice of a suitable background must be done in advance. Having made a mistake in the color scheme, you can get a room that will annoy, cause a feeling of depression.

The classic tone for the ceiling is white. It is combined with any other color from the entire palette. It causes bright associations, is a sign of novelty, purity. This coating is suitable for any room. However, in its pure form, it can look rather boring, it should be diluted with other shades.

Lilac two-level ceiling

To design living rooms often take a blue, cyan tone. For example, they make combined designs where drywall is colored light and the stretch fabric is purple. Blue color can be used in the arrangement of the toilet, bathroom, blue in a small amount - for the bedroom, nursery, purple - in the living room. In the kitchen or in the office, you can use red and orange. They excite, stimulate mental activity.

Rules for lighting and decorative lighting

Two-level ceilings can transform any room. The design itself looks very original, and if you complement it with lighting fixtures, make decorative lighting, it will become an accent of the interior. There are many ways to make lighting. To do this, you can use:

  1. Chandelier. Usually they use one large product, place it in the center of the ceiling structure.
  2. Spotlights. They can be used on any ceilings.Used to illuminate a specific area.
  3. Daylight lamps. Economical and durable. They give warm, natural, cold white light.

Two-level ceiling with lighting

For decorative lighting use:

  1. LED strip. Very flexible. Highlight the entire level around the perimeter. Using the controller, you can change the hue, the intensity of the lighting.
  2. Flexible neon. It differs from the previous version in that light is emitted in all directions.
  3. LED duralight. A beautiful and functional addition to any ceiling design. Unlike LED strip, diodes are in a plastic tube.
  4. Fiber optic fixtures. Provides a beautiful flicker, highlights the texture of the finish.

Application examples in different rooms

Due to the mounting features, two-level ceilings can be mounted in small rooms. A soft, hard cloth will be attached only a few centimeters from the ceiling, which will allow installation to be carried out practically without loss of height of the room. Only the sizes and models of fixtures can limit the freedom to choose the type of canvas. A wide variety of modern ceiling materials allows you to assemble the structure even in rooms, the area of which previously did not allow this.

In the living room

Usually in a spacious room, two-level ceilings are used for the purpose of zoning the space. With a sofa and TV, the lower part of the ceiling is located above the seating area. It can be a wall plot or the center of the living room. Work or dining areas indicate high areas. This separation method is suitable for large rooms, in other cases it is better to use furniture and partitions.

Duplex ceiling in the living room

In the living room interiors, curved plasterboard ceilings are often found. Illuminated flowing lines give the impression of dynamic space and fluidity. This effect should be supported by the layout and color dynamics.Using a two-level ceiling, you can change the geometry of the living room, create a certain mood in the common room.

On the kitchen

The tradition of decorating the ceiling in several levels was still in the royal dining chambers. The main advantage of such structures is the reliable masking of communications, roughnesses, surface roughness, beams and wires passing through the ceiling.

With the help of a two-level ceiling, the kitchen space is divided into a working area and a resting place, a meal. The lowest part of the structure is located above the dining table. This makes it possible to use a maximum of lighting, to decorate the surface with lighting devices of any type. The countertop, sink, stove and refrigerator are placed in an area without ceiling lighting. Working surfaces will have enough lighting built into the headset, hood.

In the bedroom

In the relaxation room, a two-tier ceiling plays a decorative role. He first catches his eye when waking up and the last sees off to sleep. Thanks to the design, you can use lighting of various intensities, create a beautiful relief and unimaginable lines. On a large platform in the center they place a beautiful chandelier; LEDs can be placed around the perimeter. The backlight with smooth, soft transitions creates a romantic mood.

Multilevel ceilings suppress noise well and allow you not to focus on irregularities. A mirrored surface in several tiers mounted on a metal frame will look great in the bedroom.This technique visually pushes the boundaries of the room, fills the bedroom with light, makes it voluminous and spacious.

In the hallway and corridor

In a room with a small area, the decoration technology is much easier to master. The ceilings in the hallway can be literally transformed by making them in two tiers. You can combine drywall and PVC film. Such designs visually raise the ceilings, make it possible to install high wardrobe cabinets without the risk of damaging the canvas.

The most common way to arrange the ceiling in two tiers is to build a frame around the perimeter of the entrance hall, which descends a few centimeters below the main floor. A kind of edging can be smooth, embossed, of any width and size. Side boxes are usually used for mounting fixtures. So, the main canvas remains intact, without dents or punctures.

An interesting texture or pattern can be obtained by wrapping plasterboard constructions with PVC film. All kinds of patterns are applied to the elastic vinyl coating. It can be a copy of a famous painting, mosaic, imitation of murals. A bold design move for the hallway is perforation. The upper layer of multilevel material is visible through the holes of the lower.

In the nursery

The easiest way to decorate the ceiling in the nursery is a combination of two colors. It can be shades of one tone or a contrasting bright combination. The playing area is highlighted with a brighter color, the relaxation area and the area above the desktop are calmly decorated.

One of the ceiling tiers in the children's room can be decorated with drawings. Choosing a full-fledged picture, it is necessary to take into account the age of the child, interests, preferences.Toddlers up to a year old can use the image of nature in pastel muted colors. Younger schoolchildren and preschoolers will be interested to consider the characters of their favorite cartoons.

Multilevel ceilings in a nursery with a suitable print for the age should not be durable, since the child will grow up and lose interest in the picture. In a teenage room, the ceiling should be consistent with the overall style of the room.

Do-it-yourself two-level ceiling made of drywall

Installing a ceiling of several levels is a laborious process. With the proper organization of work and the correct selection of materials and tools, you can make a ceiling structure yourself with the least financial, temporary losses. To do this, be patient and follow the detailed instructions step by step.

Do-it-yourself two-level ceiling made of drywall

Materials and Tools

For the installation of a drywall design, you will need to stock up on a large number of consumables. In addition to the main sheets of drywall, materials for the manufacture of the frame and the finish coating will be needed to create the levels. Here is a complete list of tools that are sure to come in handy:

  • Construction knife;
  • Set of screwdrivers;
  • Profiler for profiles;
  • Scissors for metal;
  • Laser level;
  • Rule
  • Screwdriver with a drill;
  • Safety glasses and gloves;
  • Set of spatulas;
  • Hammer;
  • Ladder;
  • Painting thread.

Project drafting

Drawing up a correct and detailed drawing is one of the most important points at the design stage. In advance, it is necessary to calculate the amount of materials necessary for the work and the associated financial costs. Having chosen a suitable design, they proceed to a schematic reflection of a suspended ceiling. Identify the maximum level at which you can lower the frame, type and number of lamps.

If one of the tiers of the ceiling has roundings, it is necessary to calculate their radii.Also in the plan of future work, it is necessary to include a detailed scheme for finding communications and engineering systems from the following points:

  1. Location of junction boxes;
  2. Type of wiring, cross section, cable length;
  3. Features of connecting fixtures, location of switches, controllers;
  4. Placing a hood, duct.

Duplex ceiling design

Surface preparation

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the room. If possible, it should be freed from furniture. You will also need to remove the curtains and remove the carpets. Whitewash, old peeled plaster should be washed off the ceiling. Acceptable conditions must be created for the cutting and installation of drywall, since the material does not tolerate excessive moisture and temperature jumps.

Wires for future fixtures should be brought out and marked the place of attachment of lamps and chandeliers. The ceiling surface does not have to be flat; all defects will be hidden under a duct of durable material.

Ceiling preparation

Ceiling marking and profile installation

The prepared surfaces are marked according to the previously made drawing. Use a laser level and a simple pencil for this. First you need to build a regular rectangle, beat off the size of the first and second levels. The location of all the bearing profiles is transferred to the ceiling plate, a grid is built for the convenience of further work.

Installation of the profile must be carried out strictly in stages. In designated places, suspensions are attached. Then establish a guide profile, paste over with sealing tape and fix to the wall. Now the rest of the parts are screwed from the corners to the center.

Curly multi-tier ceilings will require a curved profile. He must independently give the desired direction. The material is cut with scissors for metal every 10 cm and bent according to the planned pattern.

Profile mounting

Wiring and lighting rules

Properly selected lighting will not only create a cozy, comfortable atmosphere, but also make competent accents on selected interior items. It is necessary to take care of the location of the fixtures at the stage of surface preparation and installation of the profile.

Even before plating begins, holes are made in the drywall sheets. If a chandelier is selected, then it should not be pompous. The design in several levels in itself will look attractive. A lamp with a lot of decorative elements can overload the suspended ceiling.

Often, spotlights are used to organize lighting on two-level tier ceilings. You can mount rotary or non-rotary devices. In the first case, more possibilities and variations with devices are opened. There are many models of shades of different colors, shapes, sizes (2 x 2, 5 x 5,). The device is selected based on the general interior of the room.

Wiring

Drywall cutting, mounting and roughing

Drywall is cut according to a preliminary mark. First, a knife is drawn along the line under the ruler with an effort to drive the blade 2-3 mm, then part of the element is broken off. To get a smooth edge, cardboard on the other hand is cut and cleaned with a sandpaper.

Before mounting the prepared rectangular sheet to the frame, chamfers are removed. The edges are cut at an angle to better fill the cracks with putty. They begin to fasten the elements from the corners, observing the distance between the screws with no more than 20 cm.

To screw part of drywall to a rounded structure, the prepared element must first be softened. To do this, small holes are made in it with a needle roller and sprayed with water. After 30 minutes, the workpiece becomes more malleable, it can be given any arcuate shape. Installation is necessary while the drywall remains wet.

Installation of drywall sheets

Finishing Options and Ideas

The initial stage of finishing is puttying of all joints and seams between the fixed sheets of drywall. The starting mixture is filled into the recesses, the places of screwing in the screws, cracks, reinforced with paper tape and allowed to dry. Then, to level, grind with sandpaper. Then the entire surface of the box is covered with a finishing putty.

Standard finishes can be improved to get a more interesting result. The final mixture is combined with painting. An unusual result will be obtained if a color composition is applied on the putty in several layers. You can also use wallpaper, textured plaster.

Conclusion

When performing repairs in an apartment or a private house, everyone must determine for himself what ceiling he wants to see. When choosing two-level structures, their main advantages should be studied. If the design suits you, financial capabilities allow you to deliver it, you just have to turn to specialists, do the work yourself. You can install simple models of drywall with your own hands, but you can not do without an assistant, since the sheets are quite heavy and fragile. Installation of complex devices will require special skills and equipment.

I love needlework and everything connected with it. Especially home-made furnishings are my passion!
