Biofireplace in the interior

Biofireplace in the interior

Fire is one of three processes that can be watched endlessly. Fireplaces initially performed only a practical function. They warmed the room, they cooked food "with a smoke." When decorations began to appear in a person’s home, fireplaces began to perform an aesthetic function as well. Of course, their arrangement was fraught with a number of difficulties: storage of firewood, proper installation, connection to an exhaust hood, periodic cleaning of combustion products. Fireplace maintenance took time and required a lot of effort. Owners of apartments could completely forget about such a cozy addition to the interior, since in high-rise buildings its installation was very problematic. But technological progress has reached fireplaces, changing them beyond recognition. Modern models run on special fuel, which gives the same "live" flame, but does not distribute combustion products.Biofireplace in the interior of the house has become a stylish and environmentally friendly solution, which is becoming increasingly popular. Consider its types, features, advantages and disadvantages.

Design features and operating principles

The first bio-fireplaces appeared in Italy over 40 years ago. Their invention was the result of the creation of environmentally friendly fuels. At the moment, they have gained incredible popularity in European countries, but they are taking only the first, timid steps in the domestic market. The practice of decorating rooms in apartments in this way among our compatriots has not yet received wide application. Another situation is with private houses, the interiors of which just ask for an addition in the form of a hearth. But preference is still given to ordinary fuel, especially since there is no shortage of firewood. Over a biofireplace, only three types of manipulations are carried out:

  • Pour fuel;
  • Kindle it;
  • Enjoy the view of evenly burning flame.

The principle of operation of the device is simple, like all ingenious. The package includes a frame (decorative part) and an indoor unit (burner) made of stainless steel. Fuel is poured into it, and it also acts as a hotbed. You can adjust the flame intensity in mechanical type models using the slider cover on the heating unit. When it opens, fire flares up more.In more modern models, this procedure is performed automatically after appropriate settings on the display of the biofireplace control panel. No manipulations are required when installing the unit. The fireplace just needs to be taken out of the package, put in the chosen place and it is already ready for work. As for fuel, the prefix “bio” means that the composition was obtained by processing biological waste or waste products of animals, plants, microorganisms. This innovation is being actively introduced into various spheres of human life, since during combustion substances that are detrimental to the environment are not released. Biofuels are classified into three types:

BioethanolDenatured alcohol
BiodieselMade from vegetable oils
BiogasVolatile material obtained from waste by special treatment

“Clean” biofuel emits only water and carbon dioxide, but the flame from it does not have a natural orange hue. To make the tongues look more natural, special additives are added to the biofuel composition.

When the biofireplace is working, the air in the room will not “dry”. On the contrary, with this unit you can save on the purchase of a humidifier. By the way, the brightness and color of the flame will depend on the type of fuel.

Requirements for the room when installing the fireplace and operating rules

Although biofireplaces are not connected to the hood, which is convenient for urban apartments, it is necessary to ventilate the room where they are installed. For rooms with an area exceeding 20-25 square meters, natural air exchange through open windows is sufficient. In small rooms, man-made ventilation is required for the regular circulation of air currents, since carbon dioxide will accumulate in dangerous concentrations. Its excess negatively affects the human body and can lead to health problems.A nice and necessary addition will be decorating the room with indoor plants in pots, which will "distill" it into oxygen.

During the ignition of the fireplace, the fuel may exude a specific “alcoholic” smell, which disappears very quickly. To avoid this, add a couple of drops of aromatic oil to the tank, which “can’t spoil the porridge”.

Variety of fireplaces

The range of bio fireplaces is truly impressive. Models can be stylized as “real” vintage units or have unusual futuristic shapes. There are several classifications of biofireplaces. By location, they are divided into four types:

  • Wall mounted
  • Mobile or portable;
  • Outboard;
  • Recessed.

They are also classified by shape, size, material of execution and stylistic affiliation.

Wall

These bio-fireplaces are mounted on the wall, which becomes clear from the name. Usually they have a slightly “flattened” shape and shallow depth so that the device does not protrude much forward, which does not look very attractive. A convenient model for small rooms where there is little space even for furniture. The biofireplace has three viewing angles and occupies an accent wall, where additional decor next to such a magnificent decoration will be superfluous. Although wall-mounted units are usually equipped with a glass door, there are open-top models. Before installing them, you must make sure that nothing hangs over the biofireplace.

Portable - floor and table

A portable fireplace is considered the best option for a gift. It can be placed on the floor, table or any other surface, since the lower part of the unit does not heat up and will not do any harm to it. The mobile fireplace is easy to move to a new place or move to another room. It has four viewing angles and suggests even a central location.Portable floor models usually have impressive dimensions and are more like original fireplaces. Tabletop units have an exclusively decorative function and are miniature. They are classified into bio-flasks, bio-bowls and bio-candles.

Suspension

Suspended models are perhaps the most original of all. They are attached to the ceiling and do not touch the floor. The main convenience of such biofireplaces is manifested when cleaning the room. It becomes much easier to clean the floors and nothing needs to be moved. Of course, hanging options look unusual, stylish and very beautiful. Most often they have a round or oval shape and can have either one viewing angle or four if the side walls are made of glass.

Advantages and disadvantages

Biofireplaces have a number of undeniable advantages:

  • Environmental friendliness. Bioflame does not emit soot, harmful gases, soot and other products of "traditional" combustion. Only water and carbon dioxide.
  • Easy to install. Units can be installed in a house, apartment, office, and at the same time it is not necessary to carry out large-scale construction work, connect a hood and coordinate changes with the fire department.
  • Biofuel is compact and you can forget about the problem of storing wood reserves.
  • Easy to operate and maintain. In any model (mechanical or automatic), you can easily adjust the intensity of the flame or completely extinguish it with just one movement of the hand. Wash biofireplaces every few months with plain water.
  • Mobility. This advantage applies only to portable units.
  • A wide range and stylistic versatility.

Environmental friendliness is one of the advantages of a bio fireplace in the interior

Of the obvious shortcomings, note:

  • The prefix “bio” does not mean at all that with a flame from such a fireplace it is impossible to set fire to something, even if it does not produce sparks. Fuel is a flammable liquid that is potentially dangerous in careless hands.
  • High cost. Both the units themselves and the fuel for them will cost "a pretty penny."Given the rate of combustion (500 g per 1 hour) with regular use, you will have to prepare your wallet for serious tests.
  • Biofireplace performs a decorative function. It will not provide the room with full heating and it is impossible to cook porridge in it in a pot.

The advantages of biofireplaces are many times greater than the disadvantages. In addition, some of the disadvantages (cost) will disappear altogether with time, since so far the units are considered a curiosity.

What to look for when choosing a fireplace

When choosing a biofireplace pay attention to its design. Seams should be of high quality, and the body without dents or damage. The security door is necessarily made of heavy-duty, refractory glass. But the most important thing in a biofireplace is its hot "heart". The thicker the walls of the heating tank, the longer it will last. Quality containers are made of stainless steel. You will also have to decide on the control system. Some will like mechanics with manual adjustment of fire intensity, while others will not be able to do without “smart” automation with a set of buttons on the control panel.

Stylistic direction

Biofireplaces are universal. Absolutely any style of interior will take this element into the setting. Although some models, of course, are combined with specific design directions. For fire Provence and rustic style fit bio fireplaces with wood trim. The case from a decorative stone is organically combined with the classical and colonial direction, art nouveau. Glass models are suitable for modern, Scandinavian style and for eco interiors. The case, decorated with imitation brick, emphasizes the masonry on the accent wall in the loft. Alpine chalet, country, Russian style are not complete without a bio-fireplace. Even the restrained art deco and strict modernity will not be prevented by the fiery addition.

Materials and design

According to the materials of the building, biofireplaces are classified into the following types:

  • Glass. The most popular option due to the special aesthetics of transparent walls.
  • Ceramic. It has a nice glossy surface, which is most often combined with glass.
  • Marble. The case is made of natural stone or its imitation. In the first case, the model will have an impressive weight, which will complicate its movement and affect mobility. The use of decorative stone is justified, because overheating of the surface is not terrible.
  • Wooden. The case made of wood has a particularly "cozy" look and fits into the "eco-style" related to the unit. In the original models, it has the shape of logs folded in the hearth.
  • Metal. Durable, reliable material, combined with strict styles.
  • With a drywall portal. Such models are considered the cheapest, because their price, although it bites, but not so much. Drywall for decorating the body is often used in cases where a bio-fireplace is built independently from improvised materials.
  • Brick. Models fit into the concept of the loft and modern style. Such a case will resonate with a wall decorated with brick or masonry.

There are also combined options where several materials are combined at once. Glass appears in almost every model, since the front protective door is traditionally made from it.

Variety of shapes

Biofireplaces are carried out in a wide variety of forms: from classical to complex asymmetric geometry. Depending on this characteristic, they are classified into the following types:

  • Round and oval. A non-standard form of performance will attract attention. Such a fireplace will become an interior center for room decoration. Usually rounded "sides" have suspended and floor models.
  • Square. The traditional form for ordinary fireplaces will pour into the interior, created according to the principles of constructivism, minimalism and hi-tech.
  • RectangularClassical fireplaces that will appeal to conservatives, with skepticism related to the new and the extraordinary.
  • Embedded. Static models that adapt to placement characteristics.
  • Corner The best option for small rooms.
  • Asymmetric. The variety of non-standard forms will allow you to choose a unique option that will emphasize the features of the author's design of the room.

According to management technology

There are three types of control technology in bio fireplaces:

  • Machine. Ignition, extinguishing the fire and adjusting its intensity is carried out remotely using the remote control. An ideal model for “lazy” people who prefer to put the entire load on equipment.
  • Semi-automatic. Management is carried out using the keypad, which is located on the bio-fireplace. It differs from the machine only in the absence of a remote control, that is, in order to turn on the unit, you will have to approach it.
  • Mechanics. You will have to light the fireplace from a match, and to extinguish it or adjust the flame, you will have to move the slide cover on the tank.

Mechanical models are among the cheapest, so they are suitable for those who need a budget option for an eco-friendly fireplace.

Types and diagrams of the burner device

Burners are classified into two types depending on the complexity of the device:

  • Heating tanks. They are a kit of a separate fuel tank with thick walls and the burner itself. The device is convenient in that at any moment the combustion stops when the shutter is pushed back, which hermetically closes the fuel compartment. Heating tanks are easier to operate and more expensive.
  • The burner itself without additional components. Such elements are most often made independently due to the simplicity of the design. They represent an open tank into which fuel is poured. So that there are several reeds of flame, it is covered with a special mesh with holes. The main drawback of the design is that combustion does not stop until the fuel fluid is over. It is impossible to regulate the flame intensity. But such burners can be installed several and even supplement them with a biofireplace with a heating tank.

An important factor when choosing a unit will be fuel consumption. When using heating tanks, this figure is slightly lower than in simple burners, therefore, from the point of view of economy, they are more profitable.

Accessories and decor

Since the main function of biofireplaces is decorative, they are decorated with all kinds of accessories. They surround the burner and give the flame a touch of mysticism and romance. Fireplaces are decorated with wooden firewood and their ceramic imitation, sand, pebbles, colored pebbles, artificial or natural charcoals. Most bio fireplaces are already sold with decorations, but you can decorate the area around the burner yourself. The main thing is that the materials used are refractory, since safety is paramount.

In the interior of an apartment / house

Biofireplace fits into the interior of any room. It looks good in the kitchen, in the living room, bedroom and even the bathroom. For safety reasons, it is necessary to pay attention only to the dimensions of the room and, if necessary, equip it with an additional ventilation system. The stylistic component also plays an important role. Although the flame is the main decoration of the biofireplace, the shape and material of the body also matter.

Living room

The location of the fireplace in the hall is considered a classic, traditional option. In the Middle Ages, this huge room had to be heated well. A large fireplace placed near one of the walls coped with this task.On winter evenings, when the household gathered together after dinner, they reached for the fire, which brought the family together and enveloped the atmosphere of the room with a special “warm” romance. In modern halls, guests and relatives are also gathering. The biofireplace will unite and bring them together, because the magic of fire has retained its mystical power and attractiveness. In addition, the unit will give the room a unique cosiness and charm. Traditionally, fireplaces in the room are positioned against the wall or in the center of the room. Miniature desktop versions can be lost in the spacious living room.

Bedroom

For the bedroom are ideal desktop models. You can choose paired biofireplaces and place them symmetrically on the bedside tables. Alternatively, they use wall-mounted models that are installed in front of the head of the bed instead of the TV, so that when you fall asleep you can admire the dancing tongues of flame. Corner biofireplaces are suitable for small bedrooms. The fire calms and immerses a person in a light pacifying trance, which will help to fall asleep and restore strength after a hard working day. Since the bedroom is an intimate room that should relax, the choice of a fireplace is approached with all responsibility. It is not recommended to purchase models with cases decorated in dark or bright colors. Massive biofireplaces are more suitable for living rooms, so preference is given to compact options.

Kitchen

The fireplace in the kitchen used to be a necessity, not a luxury or a decorative element. Aromatic meat was cooked on a spit, which was served to the guests “with heat, with heat”. The most difficult thing in the kitchen is to choose a place to install a fireplace. If the room is combined with the dining room, then the best option is to place the unit near the dining area. In kitchens, the interior of which repeats the authentic atmosphere of a certain era, built-in models will look good. For them, special niches are created, decorated with brick or stone, in the center of which the bio fireplace is placed. With a U-shaped layout, the unit is built into one of the walls “back to back” to the headset. If the layout is island, then choose a miniature desktop model, which will be placed on the countertop or bar.

Loggia or balcony

On the insulated loggia or balcony, the biofireplace will look especially cozy if the additional room is equipped with a study, library or lounge. A built-in, wall or floor model is placed against a blank side wall. If the place is already occupied by furniture, then a compact desktop bio-bowl or bio-bulb is selected. To preserve the resemblance to the original, the built-in biofireplace is equipped with a shelf on which decorative vases, bottles, and small sculptures are placed.

In a country house

In a private house you can be generous with a real fireplace. This option is relevant for cases when the family nest is built from scratch and, in parallel with the construction, equip an exhaust hood for combustion products. Of course, a real fireplace has a number of disadvantages in comparison with a biversion. It will have to be cleaned regularly, large amounts of fuel must be bought, and such an aggregate cannot be moved to another room. Biofireplaces in this regard are more convenient. Since rooms in country houses usually have a large area, they are equipped with large built-in models. They install one fuel tank with several burners so that there is more flame and heat. Suspended and wall-mounted models will look original. The chalet-style country house with panoramic windows on the floor, wooden finishes and animal skins on the floor is necessarily decorated with a fireplace with a stone or wood frame. Ethnic motifs in the design of the room will be emphasized by the corner model near the sofa with a number of themed decorations on the wall and mantelpiece. The romantic atmosphere is complemented by a set of tiny lights from miniature desktop and outdoor bio fireplaces. They will replace the candles, but will last many times longer.

Conclusion

The future belongs to bio-fireplaces, since the fuel on which they operate will eventually displace traditional species from exhaustible reserves. A primitive model can be assembled independently, but safety in its operation should be a priority. The biofireplace will give a special touch to the interior on cold, winter evenings, when one wants to wrap oneself up in a blanket with a cup of hot tea and warm oneself while watching the flames dance.
