Design and zoning of the living room studio

Studio living room design

The idea of creating studio apartments first came to the mind of American architects. Premises with a similar layout quickly became fashionable. The word "studio" came to us from the Italian language, which denoted a spacious workshop of artists or sculptors. Such apartments are characterized by a relatively low cost, which facilitates the purchase of housing for those who previously could only dream about it. For example, in the West, such options are classified as budget ones, which are in demand among young families. As part of two- and one-room apartments, studio projects are also being implemented. They allow you to fit several rooms in one room without compromising the visual perception of space. The design of the living room-studio has a number of nuances that will have to be considered when creating a project. Such premises can boast of advantages, but not without drawbacks. The arrangement of the studio in a private house is more of a whim, while the design of the combined options in the Khrushchev is an urgent need.

Advantages and disadvantages

The living room-studio belongs to the universal premises. The hall will tolerate any "neighborhood." It is combined with kitchens, bedrooms, dining rooms, nurseries, workshops and workrooms. Any additional room with the help of a number of design tricks can be organically fit into the framework of both a spacious and cramped room. For owners of two-bedroom apartments, the task is simplified, since it is possible to organize a massive redevelopment and combine the two spaces into one. The studio lives by its own laws and does not allow chaos into its territory. This room is strictly divided into zones, the placement of which is guided by rational considerations. Combination has the following advantages:

  • Space saving. In some cases, this is even the only opportunity to equip an additional zone. When redeveloping an apartment from two small rooms, you can make one, but spacious. For example, the small kitchenette seemed so tiny that even looking at it was "cramped." Any tricks of designers do not save the situation. Demolition of the wall and the installation of a decorative partition with niches or a bar counter will help radically change the perception of this room. Now, subconsciously, it will be considered as a continuation of a spacious guest room.
  • The opportunity to make original for owners of summer cottages and country houses. Thus, it can be shown that the word “fashion” is not an empty phrase for them.
  • Plenty of room for imagination. Where will each zone be located and how many square meters are the hosts ready to allocate for it, they alone decide.
  • In the kitchens-living rooms you don’t have to go far for refreshments for guests who are located in the hall with the company. If the space is shared by the bar, here you can serve cocktails and chat with friends, without interrupting the process of preparing culinary masterpieces.
  • In the kitchen-living rooms, which are also combined with dining rooms, the process of laying the table for a meal will be simplified. You no longer have to go through the maze of passage rooms to bring food plates to the dining area.
  • A wide range of transforming furniture will allow you to equip a room with taste without compromising functionality. The decor will be compact and neat, without piles that visually reduce space.

Interior studio

Of the shortcomings noted:

  • Lack of sound insulation. Unfortunately, mobile or static decorative partitions and conditional space dividers completely exclude the presence of any isolation of premises except visual.
  • In variants of the kitchen-living room, a frequent change of textiles is inevitable, which will be saturated with the smells of the culinary half of the room.
  • Lack of natural light. If initially the room was one, and did not become the result of a redevelopment, then only the zone adjacent to the window will bathe in the sun. The partition will aggravate the situation. The far platform, located closer to the door, will have to be illuminated artificially.

It is not recommended to combine rooms contrasting in functionality with the use of conditional boundaries. For example, a bedroom and a living room - rooms are opposite in atmosphere and purpose of use. The first rest quietly, and the second with noise. Accordingly, it is impossible to distinguish between zones of light or a podium, as falling asleep in the presence of a company of guests will not work.

Kitchen-living room

The interior design of the kitchen-living room is associated with a number of nuances. To begin with, one should not allow the penetration of an aggressive microclimate of the culinary site into the recreation area. The hood and ventilation system must cope with the tasks, so that the living room does not suffer from constant changes in temperature and high humidity. It is recommended, of course, to establish the actual separation of zones. At least a little, but it protects the room from the kitchen and by-products of cooking (smell and fat). Also, professionals advise using a minimum of textiles. In any case, you will have to wash it often. For upholstered furniture, it is better to provide special protective covers. It is impossible to use synthetics in the design, which will quickly become worthless from frequent washes. Space needs to be combined competently. The hall in this situation acts as the "leading" room. The kitchen is often given a small corner. The option of separating the two spaces with a bar counter or worktop with a stove is relevant. The last decision you could see in cooking programs. In large rooms (at dachas or country houses), where there is space for "maneuvers", they organize an island type of kitchen unit. This kind of layout is considered stylish and fashionable.

Kitchen-living-dining room

Three zones in one bottle is a risky option. The dining room is usually considered as a complement to either the kitchen or the living room. It does not belong to the "leaders" of the trio, therefore, the minimum place for eating is allocated. It can be a “buffer”, a transitional zone between the kitchen and the living room or it can be comfortably located in a corner where it will not interfere. The first option is preferable, since in this case the intermediate zone will protect the living room from the kitchen microclimate. If the room has a bay window, then the dining room will be organized by the window. At lunch, households can enjoy beautiful views and swim in the sun. Also keep in mind that with the color separation of zones, a platform for eating is decorated in warm colors. They have a beneficial effect on appetite and create a comfortable atmosphere.

Stylistic directions

There are a lot of stylistic options in design. To design a living room-studio, it is recommended to adhere to the framework of one direction or several adjacent. Strong stylistic contrast can "hurt" hit the perception of the room. Instead of one studio, you will see several zones that create a chaotic pile. Consider some of the directions demanded by designers and studio owners.

Classics, despite the fact that it belongs to the old styles, remains relevant to this day. The direction has slightly changed, it has become more elegant, has allowed modern household appliances into the interiors, without which it is no longer possible, but remained true to itself and its rules. In the classical style, decorative columns are used to separate the zones. They organically merge into the atmosphere and harmonize with stucco molding on the ceiling. The walls are plastered or wallpaper with floral patterns. The floor is finished with parquet or laminate. Upholstery of upholstered furniture is replete with a small floral pattern. The windows are curtained with heavy curtains made of natural fabric, which are tied in the afternoon with neat ropes with tassels at the ends. A decorative fireplace decorated with artificial stone or stucco is installed in the living area. Poufs, coffee tables, chests of drawers and cabinets stand on elegant, twisted legs. The walls are decorated with reproductions of paintings by famous artists in baguette frames with gilding. A heavy crystal chandelier hangs from the ceiling. In the color scheme, shades of brown prevail: gold, sand, beige, cream. For contrast, add a couple of blue, terracotta, wine "spots".

Loft is considered the product of urbanization. It combines details, a combination of which it was impossible to imagine before. Coarse brick walls alternate with smooth, snow-white stucco. The ceiling is decorated with wooden beams. There are no curtains at all on the windows; they are replaced by practical blinds. The living room studio literally bathes in artificial lighting, which is organized on three levels. Modern household appliances and furniture organically merge into the composition. Communications put on public display. They become a decorative element. Loft belong to the group of elite styles that are suitable for the design of suburban mansions.

The Provence-style living room has a special atmosphere of cozy, romantic antiquity. White, beige, pink and blue prevail in the color scheme. Soft and calm shades enliven due to the abundance of floral patterns on wallpaper and in textiles. The floor is finished with a parquet board, which is additionally painted in white. Only one coat is applied so that coarse strokes are visible on the surface. The furniture uses antiques or exclusive details, artificially aged. Particular attention is paid to the decor: small pillows, bedspreads, figurines, flower vases and pots with living plants. A heavy chandelier with light bulbs imitating candles is hung on the ceiling. It is additionally decorated with artificial pearls. The floor is covered with a soft carpet with a classic geometric pattern. The walls are decorated with picturesque paintings in round frames.

American art deco looks like a potpourri of classic and contemporary styles. Finishing materials use wood and plastic. Upholstery of sofas and armchairs is made of genuine leather in plain colors. Olive, beige, gray, white prevail in shades. Accents are performed in blue, green, purple and blue tones. The floor is covered with laminate. A stretch ceiling with a glossy surface of a light shade will allow you to stretch the room in height. Against the background of plain walls, the accent zone with floral ornaments will look stylish and organic.

Zoning Methods

Studio zoning options are not conditional and actual. The former allow you to visually separate one site from another, while the latter do not hint, but speak directly about it. Zoning can be carried out using the following methods:

  • The furniture. The option refers to the actual one, since a material object is placed on the border, which is an obstacle.
  • Color composition or using combined finishing materials. This method is considered conditional.
  • Different levels on the ceiling or podium on the floor.
  • With the help of lighting.
  • Arches or decorative walls.
  • Sliding type constructions or mobile partitions.

The methods can be combined with each other, if the interior composition allows it.

Furniture arrangement

Furniture zoning is usually carried out using sofas, cabinets or open shelving. A long, narrow table can also act as a separator. When arranging furniture, it is worth considering that you unknowingly create “routes” for moving around the room. They should be comfortable with a minimum of obstacles. Otherwise, the movement will be associated with excessive body movements and internal discomfort. The sofa across the living room is a conflicting experience. Some people may feel discomfort without having a closed “rear”. The rack is still considered the best option. At the same time, it decorates the living room and creates an actual border, which is subconsciously easily perceived.

Wall color and decoration materials

Zoning based on contrasts plays on the psychology of people. Color perception will automatically immediately separate one zone from another. Enhanced effect combined decoration. The combination of different textures will even make the zones more "independent". For example, a combination of relief stucco with regular, smooth looks organically. Light paint with delicate wallpaper also looks good. The loft combines brick or masonry with plaster.Color contrasts can be bright, which is permissible only in spacious rooms, or smooth, with a soft transition.

The pros and cons of the podium

In the living room kitchens, it is recommended to set up a cooking area on an elevated position. It is not as spacious as the hall, and a similar reception will slightly highlight and lift it in the eyes of households. If the living room is combined with the bedroom, then a bed is placed on the podium. The step of many causes rejection, since at first they are constantly stumbling over it from a habit. However, if the podium has a complex structure, then it can be used as additional storage space. Drawers are built into it that correctly mask. The podium belongs to modern design solutions. It will look more organically with a decorative “step” on the ceiling of a similar shape.

Bar counter or island

The bar counter is considered a universal option that will add a working area in the kitchen and actually divide the space. In addition, such furniture is relevant for those owners who like to collect noisy companies. No one will refuse a pair of invigorating cocktails. On the living room side, the counter is complemented by high chairs, in the best traditions of cereal establishments. A special shelf with holders for bottles and glasses is installed on top. "Island" - the type of arrangement of the kitchen. It is a separate countertop, most often together with a stove, so as not to go beyond the boundaries of the working “triangle”. The island layout is used only in large rooms. A small piece of "earth" coming off the mainland will serve as the actual border at the junction of the two zones and will allow you to design the interior in an original way.

Sliding structures

Sliding structures are presented by screens, doors and accordion partitions. Sometimes they are also called “wandering” or “drifting” walls. Screens are classified as mobile partitions. You can remove them from the room at any time. Sliding doors and accordion partitions "move apart" to the sides. They can be made of various materials: drywall, MDF, plastic, glass, fabric in metal frames. An interesting option is rotating partitions. Of course, they will have to organize a space for “maneuver”, therefore interior objects are permissible only in spacious rooms. Original options are decorated with living plants, which can also be periodically moved from the shade under the sun. Adjusting the light level will allow you to control the growth of home flora.

Multilevel ceiling and lighting

Different ceiling levels are traditionally emphasized by lighting fixtures. Spotlights not only add a decorative, diffused light to the room, but also emphasize the surface relief. Additionally, light bulbs are installed around the perimeter of the room and in the area of accent areas. This solution looks stylish and elegant. Multilevel ceilings with additional lighting organically merge into the loft, hi-tech and minimalism. If the room is small, then it is visually enlarged by reflective surfaces that play in a cool decorative light.

Combined room decorative touches

The decor of the combined room plays an important role in the separation of zones. Using jewelry of different styles, you can further distinguish between spaces. A lot of textiles are used in the living room: curtains, upholstery, rugs, pillows, carpets. In the kitchen, the use of fabrics is recommended to be avoided altogether. Dressing boils down to adding a couple of culinary details: jars for spices, glass compositions, artificial twists in vinegar, amulets from cereals, painted cutting boards, hatchets for chops with carved handles, embroidered napkins. The walls of the kitchen are usually decorated with thematic murals or collages with still lifes. In the living room use compositions from photographs, lamps (table, floor, sconces), figurines (relevant for classics), vases, bowls, plates on special stands. A bright spot in the interior picture will stand out living indoor plants.

Conclusion

In country houses, the combination is usually negotiated before construction. Accordingly, the union is easier, because all the nuances are calculated in advance. In apartments, this process goes “with a creak”, as it is accompanied by a number of problems that need to be resolved in advance. In order not to have to correct what has already been done and spend new forces on repeated repairs or decoration, it is better to contact a professional for advice. Another option is to create a drawing project that will allow you to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the design.
