How to choose a hood for the kitchen: tips from professionals

Cooker hood

A high-quality and stylish range hood in the kitchen is not a luxury, but a real necessity. This technique not only ensures the comfort of cooking, but also prevents rapid contamination of the finish near the work area. Modern firms offer a wide range of models with different parameters, additional functions. Even a small hood can have quite good power and fully cope with the task. That is why when choosing a suitable model, you need to focus not only on the price-quality ratio, but also on the capabilities of specific air purifiers. They can differ not only in external supply, but also in the way of installation, operation parameters. Having carefully studied our tips and tricks, you can easily find a decent model for your kitchen. Also, our step-by-step instructions will help you do the right installation of a regular or built-in hood with your own hands.

Why do you need a hood in the kitchen

The main task of the cooker hood is to quickly and efficiently remove contaminated air during cooking. Also, in the case of cooking on a gas stove, its main purpose is the removal of combustion products of domestic gas. Additional functionality of kitchen air purifiers include:

  • Minimizing contamination of the cooking zone.

High-quality extracts contribute to the removal of not only steam, but also water, grease splashes formed during cooking. With the correct operation of the unit, they will settle on the filters, and not on the walls, furniture facades, or the worktop.

  • Removing odors.

Removing odors during cooking will ensure the preservation of the "freshness" of used upholstered kitchen furniture. For studios in which the kitchen is combined with the living room, the presence of a good hood will help to avoid situations where the upholstery and filler of upholstered furniture in the hall are saturated with the smells of previously prepared products.

  • Creating optimal cooking conditions.

Materials used in the production

Modern air purifiers have metal housings. This feature guarantees their reliability, long service life and minimal exposure to negative influences. Also made of metal and rails, which are decorated with hoods. As additional materials are used:

  • plastic: mainly used for the manufacture of original pads on a metal case, provide eye-catching stylization;
  • glass: is also an auxiliary material that allows you to make the model more modern and stylish; True, models with glass inserts require more thorough and frequent care;
  • wood: wood inserts on the case are a profitable addition and a simple way to stylize models; usually they do not require special care and steadily tolerate the negative effects of steam.

The main types of hoods by type of arrangement and interaction with furniture, their advantages and disadvantages

Choosing a hood suitable for the installation method and location features, it is worth considering the possibility of using a specific model for installation in your kitchen. Some types of equipment need to be built in between or under the cabinets headset or mounted directly in the headset. Each of these features has both its advantages and disadvantages:

  • separate location (above the cooking zone): fixing the equipment to the ceiling requires a carefully thought-out project, which will take into account the general view of the equipped room and the subsequent closure of the failed communications;
  • integration into furniture (countertop, cabinet): first of all, it is necessary to take into account the dimensions of the depth and the total free space in the converted part of the headset; such models provide minimal use of the kitchen space;
  • arrangement in the composition with furniture (between, under the cabinets): the installed equipment will stand out against the background of the headset, but it will take much more space than a similar built-in model.

Recessed

Built-in range hoods are among the most popular (including smoker owners) due to their convenient and compact layout. The upper part (duct) of such models is located inside the hanging cabinet of the kitchen unit. The lower part, equipped with a control unit, is located under this cabinet. The main advantages of built-in air purifiers include:

  1. Minimal violation of the overall interior by hiding most of the model.
  2. Easy to integrate into modern headsets (the duct can be located both in a cabinet with a door that opens upwards and in a cabinet with ordinary doors).
  3. A wide range of models (with different sizes and functional characteristics: for example, you can easily choose the built-in telescopic model, the working area of which is easily increased due to the simple extension of the lower unit with filters).

As for the minuses of the models, they include the complexity of transferring such equipment and the need for careful selection of a new headset, with which it can be re-installed.

Built-in range hood

Hanging

The suspended hood is one of the most compact. It is a small unit equipped with filters, a control system. Its fan is mounted directly in the main unit. Therefore, suspended models often look like a small parallelepiped. They can be mounted under lockers or placed on an “empty” wall. Rigid metal or flexible corrugated duct systems are purchased separately for such models. Due to its compactness, hanging models can be easily integrated into the interior of any kitchen. At the same time, connecting ducts to them is not difficult. If desired, the installation of add-ons can be carried out over the kitchen set or inside it (by analogy with built-in models).Other important advantages of suspended hoods include budget, a slight noise during operation and a wide range.

Hanging hood

Dome

Dome models belong to the budget category. They have an affordable cost, are made with different designs and can be complemented by different decor (glass and wooden inserts, roof rails). The design of these hoods is quite simple: they include a dome, equipped with a control unit and supplemented by filters at the bottom, and equipped with a duct pipe. Dome models are suitable for equipping ultra-modern kitchens and kitchens with a restrained design or without a specific style. They do not belong to the quietest models, but at the same time, the noise from them, even when operating at maximum speed, is negligible. Due to the large working area they guarantee fast and high-quality removal of polluted air flows. The control unit of models often includes 2-3 speed modes and a button to turn on the light. Newer hood hoods may have special timers and sensors for automatically starting hoods.

Dome hood

Domino

Non-standard hoods of the “domino” type (or as they are also called hood-type hoods) are gaining more and more popularity due to the features of their installation. Unlike other types of air purifiers, they are installed not above the stove, but next to it. Typically, the installation of the hood "domino" is carried out parallel to the stove - between the tile and the wall. An important feature of such models is their compactness: household appliances of a retractable type are easily “cleaned” into the countertop. To start it, you just need to pull it out of the countertop and set the desired operating mode. Domino models are ideally suited for installation in modern kitchens decorated in simple and concise styles (modern, minimalism, hi-tech). True, they are unsuitable for installation near conventional gas stoves.Often they are mounted near electric and induction hobs. Models are produced in different sizes and with different parameters, so picking them up for installation near a small electric stove or large induction surface is quite easy. But this technique has a very high price.

Domino hood

Island

Island-type hoods stand out for their custom design and installation method. They can be mounted anywhere in the kitchen, and at the same time are fixed directly to the ceiling. Often fastened with special studs or cables. Therefore, visually they seem to soar above the work surface. Such models can often be seen in the kitchens in modern restaurants and in the homes of culinary masters. At the same time, it is quite difficult to find similar equipment in an ordinary store: they are made to order taking into account the specifics of the equipped kitchen and the interior created in it. Installation of an island hood is quite difficult, since it requires taking into account the features of bringing electrics to it and laying ducts. Typically, communications to the equipment are located under the ceiling and then are closed by stretch, plasterboard or other ceilings. That is why such hoods are more suitable for installation in private homes or in apartments with a ceiling height of about 3 meters.

Island hood

Corner

Non-standard angular type hoods are somewhat similar to dome models. They also include a large dome at the bottom for quick removal of steam and contaminated air flows, and on top include a duct pipe. The features of such models include the need for angular placement. They will become a practical complement to the kitchen, in which the stove is located in the corner: between the cabinets and the sink between the cabinet and the sink. The disadvantages of this type include the difficulty of connecting to a ventilation system or a separate outlet to the street.Such a problem can be encountered when installing the hood in a corner remote from the window. If desired, the duct system can be located above the headset or laid directly in it (on the upper shelves of the cabinets). True, such a solution will be very problematic: it will be necessary not only to drill holes in the cabinet, but also to sacrifice the free space of the headset, which could be used to store utensils and other kitchen tools.

Corner hood

Tilted

Unusual hoods with a tilted working area are in great demand. They give the design of the kitchen a great personality, emphasize the modernity of its equipment. True, such models are quite noisy: they are equipped with powerful fans for the instant removal of contaminated air and steam. This feature is due precisely to the design of the air purifiers so that the rising flows do not spoil the appearance and condition of the ceiling. The angle of inclination of the working part of such a technique may be different. It is worth paying special attention to this characteristic when choosing a model. For a high-quality arrangement of kitchens with conventional gas stoves in standard sizes, it is recommended to select hoods with a small angle of inclination of the working part (for better removal of gas combustion products). For electric stoves and induction hobs, models with any angle of inclination are suitable.

Inclined hood

Types of hoods by cleaning method

Before choosing a suitable hood for the kitchen, it is very important to consider not only the features of its design, but also the way to clean the polluted air. According to this parameter, the following classification of air purifiers exists:

  • circulating;

If it is not possible to connect the installed hood to the general ventilation system or to prepare a separate (direct) outlet of polluted air to the street, circulation models are the best solution.They absorb contaminated streams, clean them and immediately “return” air to the room. However, during cooking in the kitchen with a circulation hood, it is recommended to open a window or window to ensure an influx of fresh air.

  • flowing;

Polluted air after mechanical cleaning in such models is discharged into the street. They are usually connected to the ventilation system, less often under such hoods, an outdoor outlet is separately prepared.

  • combined.

Combine two operating modes that allow using an auxiliary valve to block the discharge of contaminated streams into the street and ensure their instant cleaning and flow into the room.

Flow hood

Filter systems

In modern models, several types of filters can be combined at once, each of which allows for high-quality cleaning of flows coming to the hood. The most popular filter systems include:

  • paper, non-woven;

They are disposable and represent a piece of canvas. As you use it, dust and grease accumulate on such a filter. During cleaning, hoods should be discarded and replaced with new ones.

  • acrylic;

Carry out a rough cleaning and accumulate fat, dust. Need careful cleaning: to remove the accumulated fat, briefly soak the filter in warm soapy water.

  • aluminum;

Refers to reusable models used for rough cleaning. Their advantage is the ease of washing in dishwashers.

  • coal.

Belong to models of thin cleaning. Used for the accumulation of harmful microparticles, the absorption of unpleasant odors. They can have different shapes (square, rectangular, round) depending on the hood for which they are made. They are disposable and require timely replacement.

Size - how to choose the right one

It will not be difficult to determine the necessary hood parameters taking into account the specifics of the arrangement of the kitchen and the originally allocated space for this technique.When selecting models, you can be guided by the following tips:

  • Width.

It is recommended to select the hood according to the size of the stove. So, the width of the air cleaner should be equal to or literally 2-4 cm less than the width of the plate. It is better to take a model with a margin so that its width is greater than the width of the plate. When buying a smaller model, it will be impossible to ensure the correct removal of air from the hob. In the case of embedding the oven between the headsets, you need to focus on the distance between the cabinets, where the equipment should fit.

  • Depth.

a small hood in the kitchen

Telescopic models can be selected with any depth, regardless of the size of the plate. Standard hoods should ideally have the same depth as the hob. It is allowed to select a model with less depth (or replace it with inclined models), if the depth of the cabinets between which it is located is too small and the serving equipment will spoil the appearance of the kitchen.

Power: calculation of productivity, considering the size of the kitchen

Choosing a suitable hood for power is quite easy to do according to the following principle:

  1. Calculate the area of the equipped kitchen and multiply it by the height of the walls, then multiply by 12 (the standard calculation parameter for the removal of contaminated air in normal cooking mode). For example, for a room with a size of 4 by 5 meters and a wall height of 2.7 meters, this figure will be 4x5x2.7x12 = 648.
  2. It is also necessary to calculate the distance from the hood to the ventilation duct (or a separate air outlet). That is, calculate the length of the ducts. For each meter counted, it will be necessary to add another 10% to the number obtained in the first paragraph. For example, if the length of the ducts is less than 1 meter, the approximate power will remain the same. If the length is from 1 to 2 meters, then the required power will be 648 + 64.8 (10%) = 712.8.
  3. For each bend of the duct, 10% of the power should also be calculated.If there is one bend, then the resulting figure increases by the previously calculated 10%: 712.8 + 64.8 = 777.6. In addition, we consider a spare capacity of 10-20% (in case of food burning) 777.6 + 64.8 = 842.4.

The number obtained in the calculations will be the optimal indicator of performance. Therefore, for our example, you will need to purchase hoods with a capacity of 840 cubic meters / h.

Type of control: ease of use

Convenience of its operation directly depends on the type and features of the hood control panel. The following types of blocks are distinguished with which modern models are equipped:

  • mechanical;

Setting modes and enabling additional options is included mechanically. The buttons can be ordinary buttons (button control) or special sliders (slider control). They are characterized by ease of use and greater reliability (mechanical blocks rarely fail).

  • electronic;

It includes control buttons, but at the same time it is supplemented with an LED display, which allows you to easily select the optimal operation mode of the hood or carry out intelligent tuning of the operation of the equipment.

  • sensory.

It is equipped with a panel on which the inclusion of modes or changing the operation parameters of the hood is carried out without touching - you just need to bring your finger to the touch button. Such a unit is very convenient to use, but difficult to repair.

A trifle, but useful: additional features

The selection of a stylish and practical hood must necessarily include consideration of its special functions. A detailed overview of the additional features of the models will help you easily find the best option for an air purifier from a well-known brand or a new manufacturer of equipment. Useful helper options include:

  • lighting: in the modern market it is difficult to find models without lighting, but when choosing it is recommended to give priority to hoods in which the lamps are additionally protected with plastic or glass (this will prevent the accumulation of dust and grease on the illuminators themselves);
  • emergency indication of filters: indicates the need to change or clean the filters used;
  • automatic change of speed: due to special sensors, the rate of removal of steam, grease can automatically change, providing the best conditions for cooking and the fast speed of drawing contaminated streams;
  • automatic switching on and off: allows starting or stopping fans and turning off equipment according to the time set on the timer;
  • "Residual stroke": ensures the operation of the hood at low speeds for 5-15 minutes after turning off for the maximum possible removal of steam, odors.

Hood in the interior of kitchens of different styles

Having carefully studied the characteristics, rating and features of different types of hoods, it is worth paying attention to the stylistic presentation, color of the models. It’s easy to select such a technique for different styles of kitchens using the following directions in the directions:

  • hi-tech, modern: the styles will be ideally complemented by modern gray and black models of the inclined, built-in type and “dominoes”, supplemented by glass inserts and equipped with electronic or touch control units;
  • classic, provence: the best solution will be the dome and corner models in white (wood inserts are acceptable);
  • minimalism: strict island, built-in, suspended and inclined models will be appropriate in this style, will fit well into the design and “dominoes” in black;
  • loft: the best option would be the domed, inclined models in light brown and the suspended model in beige color;
  • modern, urban: silver and dark gray models of a suspended, dome or built-in type are suitable.

Features of self-installation of hood with air duct

Doing the installation of a hood with an air duct with your own hands is not difficult. But before installing the equipment, you need to consider the following features:

  1. The cooker hood should be placed at a distance of not less than 70 cm, the distance between the gas stove and the cooker hood should be about 80 cm or more.
  2. Mark the location of fasteners must be at the level. It is important to consider that the stove itself, due to uneven floors, can stand at a slight slope.
  3. To exit the air duct with a poor-quality ventilation system, it will be necessary to prepare a special hole in the wall (for venting air to the street). You need to carefully consider how the duct will be connected to it, and how it will run relative to the headset. It is advisable to make as few bends as possible and not change the diameter of the duct so as not to reduce the speed and quality of the discharge of contaminated air.

Hood installation

Necessary materials and tools

For self-installation of hoods you will need:

  1. Self-tapping screws and dowels (for fixing the technique itself).
  2. Corrugation or plastic box (corrugation can make a loud noise when the hood is operating at maximum power).
  3. Clamps or self-tapping screws (for fixing ductwork).
  4. Screwdriver or drill.
  5. Level (for the correct marking of the mounting location of equipment and ducts).
  6. Crown for concrete (if necessary, blanking a separate hole for the removal of combustion products to the street).
  7. Roulette.
  8. Hacksaw for metal (when used as an air duct corrugation).
  9. Knife, nippers and insulation tape (for safe connection of equipment to the power supply).

Additionally, winding materials (such as FUM tape) may be needed. They will allow you to tightly connect the mounted duct to the hood itself.

Screwdriver

Stages of work

Direct installation of the hood with the air duct is carried out according to the following instructions:

  1. Marking the attachment points of the hood (taking into account the optimal height for the hood and its operation), preparing the fasteners and fixing the equipment.
  2. Preparing the duct connection. Also, preparation of the place where the hood will remove combustion products. To remove the duct to the ventilation valve, you can use a special sleeve (it will firmly and reliably become in the channel).It can also be used to connect the duct to a separate hole in the wall. It is necessary to lay the duct with a minimum length and virtually no bends.
  3. Connecting equipment to the mains. To do this, you need to remove the wire from the junction box in advance and carefully lay it to the hood. Such work should be carried out only after turning off the power in the apartment. Also, do not connect the equipment to the power grid in the absence of such work skills.

Mounting the hood

Self-installation of built-in hood

The difference in the installation of conventional and built-in hoods (of any brand and with any cubic capacity) is significant: the latter are mounted in the cabinet itself, so they do not need to be mounted on the wall. The work is carried out according to the following instructions:

  1. The hood is tried on to a cabinet (which is not yet suspended on the wall), the places where the equipment is fixed are marked.
  2. The cabinet is being assembled (if necessary). A hood is installed. Mount the base under the duct. The cabinet is attached to the wall.
  3. An air duct is connected to the hood, equipment is connected to the power supply network.
  4. A protective box is mounted (over the duct), the operation of the equipment is checked.
  5. With the correct operation of the air purifier, the doors are installed on the cabinet.
