How high to hang the hood

How high to hang the hood

The range hood is a devoted companion of the hostess in the struggle for cleanliness and fresh air, not only in the kitchen, but throughout the apartment. It greatly facilitates and shortens the cleaning process. This device protects surfaces from the appearance of splashes of fat, allows you to remove combustion products, unpleasant odors, and fumes from the room. The degree of effectiveness of a device, first of all, depends on its design features and technical characteristics. An illiterate installation can significantly reduce air absorption. It is important to correctly position the device relative to the source of pollution, and for this you need to know at what height to hang the hood above the stove.

The main functions of the hood in the kitchen

The main purpose of the device is to remove or filter contaminated air. Like a vacuum cleaner, the hood draws it into itself and sends it to the ventilation shaft, or passes it through filters that trap unwanted particles.

Products emitted from the combustion of natural gas pose a risk to human health. Therefore, the key task of the hood is to remove precisely these substances.

The device provides an influx of fresh air into the room, maintains a normal atmosphere. Getting rid of carcinogens is an equally important function of this device.

The hood does not allow grease and soot to spread throughout the kitchen, saves cleaning products, time and effort of the hostess, eliminates the painstaking daily cleaning of surfaces.

What determines the location of the hood

The right choice of height for mounting the ventilation system is an indispensable condition for its effective operation. At the time of determining this parameter, the following are taken into account:

  • manufacturer's recommendations;
  • dimensions and power of the device;
  • architectural features of the room;
  • distance from the hood to the vent;
  • type of hob;
  • regulated standards for the placement of hoods.

Deviation from generally accepted norms is fraught with undesirable consequences. At an excessively long distance, the hood will not be able to actively trap air and grease particles that will settle everywhere. The device will work idle, air purification will require much more time.

Too close to the hood to the hob is also undesirable. It is necessary to leave a gap of at least the minimum recommended by the standards. Failure to do so may result in:

  • inconvenience in work - if the hood is hanging too low, it is difficult for the cook to inspect the contents of the pots, to control the cooking process. The likelihood of frequent hitting the device with your head, getting injured;
  • shortening the operating period - the lack of distance between the exhaust equipment and the stove is the cause of the device overheating and its rapid failure;
  • fire - there is a danger of ignition of fat accumulated on the filter elements;
  • decrease in efficiency - the rate of clogging of the filters increases, so that the derivatives of combustion and cooking will settle on all surfaces.

Types of cooker hoods

Devices are classified according to the following criteria:

  • type of cleaning;
  • location.

According to the type of cleaning, the following groups of hoods are distinguished:

  • recirculation - remove fat, soot and odors by filtering. The cleaned air returns to the room, and unhealthy particles remain in the filter elements. The disadvantage of such devices is the need for regular replacement of filters, and plus in the relative ease of installation and small dimensions;
  • flowing - capture contaminated air and send it to the ventilation, through which it is discharged outside the house. Such devices are equipped with a pipe discharged into the vent. The pipe may be metal or plastic with a square or circular cross section. Often a smooth pipe is successfully replaced by a corrugated one;

Possessing all the advantages of a smooth duct, the corrugation has a unique advantage. It bends, and therefore, it is easy to lay along any path without sharp bends and adapters.The absence of the need to build a complex system of individual pipe sections and fittings makes the corrugated version attractive for those who decide to do it yourself.

  • combined - combine the functionality of the two previous options. They have two operating modes - flow and recirculation. Switching from one mode to another is necessary.

The following classification of hoods indicates their location, depending on where the stove is located.

The options are as follows:

  1. Corner - use if the plate is in the corner.
  2. Wall-mounted - the most widely used, can be mounted independently, under a cabinet, or fixed on the lower shelf.
  3. Island - are attached to the ceiling above the stove, located in the center of a spacious kitchen.
  4. Built-in - a cabinet acts as a case, which hides the device. Mounted in place of the lower shelf.

Hoods also vary in body type:

  • Dome - independent devices, have the shape of a dome. They have great power and impressive dimensions. Always equipped with an air vent;
  • flat - exhaust options, often equipped with electronic controls;
  • inclined - the suction plane of such devices is located at an obtuse angle with respect to the hob. Do not interfere with the passage of light and do not cast a shadow on the stove.

General requirements, rules and standards for installing the hood

There are general rules that should be followed during the installation of any exhaust systems. The main thing is compliance with the manufacturer's requirements and established standards. The instructions for any model always have recommendations for the optimal distance to the stove. As a rule, you can vary these parameters within 10 cm depending on the growth of the hostess or the characteristics of the furniture structure. Standards have been developed to prevent fires in order to maintain fire safety.The width of the hood must match the width of the hob. If the suction surface is less than the area of the plate, effective air purification will not occur.

Hood installation

Installation features and height above the gas stove

Of all types of stoves, it is gas that puts forward the most serious requirements for the installation and placement of the hood. It is unacceptable to ignore standard recommendations, as their non-compliance creates a real threat to the life of both an individual family and the rest of the inhabitants of this building.

To begin with, the use of a gas stove implies the presence of an open flame in the room. Any devices and structures placed above them should be removed from the surface at a distance of 75-85 cm.

When installing the duct, it must be remembered that it is unacceptable to completely close the ventilation hole. Gas accumulated in the room as a result of an accident or improper handling of the stove should be able to freely exit. If a separate exit to the ventilation duct is not provided, the existing one should be divided into two parts. This is achieved by installing a special lattice divided into two compartments. In one of its parts is a hole for the pipe, the second has standard jumpers.

Features of installation and height above electric and induction cooker

The requirements for installing the hood over electric and induction cookers are somewhat milder. This mainly relates to recommendations for placing the device at a certain height above the stove. In this case, it is allowed to install the hood a little lower - at a distance of 65-75 cm.

Features of installation and height of inclined hood

Inclined hoods are indispensable in miniature rooms, where the question of maximum preservation of free space is acute. When installing an inclined hood above a gas stove, the requirements are somewhat different. The lower edge of the surface should be 55-65 cm from the gas furnace.Only 35-45 cm will be required to retreat from the induction or electric stove.

Do-it-yourself installation

The hood is not the most difficult device, so if you have little experience and a set of necessary tools, it is quite possible to install it yourself. Self-assembly is a great opportunity to save on the services of specialists.

Mounting the hood

Mounting the hood attached to the bottom of the cabinet

Hanging models are attached directly to the bottom shelf of the cabinet. Installation is simple, installation is carried out using self-tapping screws and a screwdriver. Since the duct connection to the recirculation device is not required, the installation ends with its connection to the mains.

Mounting the hood in a hanging cabinet

Self-installation of hoods in a cabinet requires certain carpentry skills. For a new headset, the device is purchased at the furniture design stage. In order for it to fit into an already operating hanging cabinet, it is necessary that the dimensions of the hood correspond to the internal dimensions of the housing.

To work, you will need:

  • jigsaw, you can also use manual;
  • hacksaw for wood;
  • pencil;
  • screwdriver (preferably a screwdriver);
  • awl;
  • building angle, tape measure;
  • clamps.

Installation steps:

  • First of all, you need to free the housing from the facades, and not only a specific cabinet for hoods, but also adjacent boxes. Next, remove the cabinet and fasten the adjoining cases to each other with clamps. Do not skip this item - the boxes may fall and get damaged.
  • We unscrew the lower shelf, apply it to the upper plane of the exhaust device. We outline the duct circuit and the holes for removing the wire with the plug for connecting the device to the network. Cut out the marked holes.
  • We insert the hood into the body and mark the upper boundaries of the device. We fix the lower shelf along the outlined lines. We drill 4 holes in it.

An exact match of the fastener points with the holes can be achieved using a stencil.

We fix the hood inside the cabinet and install the duct. We connect with it the ventilation hole and the system. We install shelves and facades. It is worth checking the performance of the equipment before installing the facades.

Mounting the hood with air duct

The installation procedure for such a hood includes:

  • fixing the hood;
  • development of duct and wiring diagrams;
  • fitting box;
  • installation of the box using sealant.

The duct is collected from a plastic box or made of aluminum corrugation. The first option is stronger, more aesthetic and more reliable. Therefore, it is worth giving preference to it. Plastic is easily sawn and connected with special elements. Additional strength to the compounds is given with sealant. The corrugation also has its advantages - its flexibility allows you to lay the duct along a curved path.

Criteria and rules for choosing a hood

When choosing a hood, be sure to pay attention not only to the appearance of the device, but also to such significant characteristics as its size, power, and the level of noise emitted. Also important is the type of control, additional “bonuses” from the manufacturer - added useful features.

The choice of hoods for the kitchen

The size

The size of the hood must correspond to the dimensions of the hob and in no case should the device be smaller. The suction plane should cover the entire surface of the plate. Only in this case can the effective operation of the device be ensured. If you hang a hood by 50 cm above a stove with a width of 60 cm or more, you should not expect a good result. The device will not cope with the removal of odors and grease, and the money will be wasted.

Small hood

Power

The performance of the hood, its power depends on the power of the fans built into it. More often, systems are equipped with one or two devices for venting air. Fans can operate at various speeds. Usually hoods are equipped with two or four modes.Productivity is determined by the amount of cleaned air per hour. In different models, this indicator varies between 200-700 m3 / h. There are expensive hoods, the power of which reaches 1300 m3 / h. According to GOST 26813-99, the performance of the ventilation unit above the hob should not be less than 200 m3 / h.

High power makes it possible to quickly and efficiently remove grease and unpleasant odors. In emergency cases - burnt food, milk escaped - this ability will be very useful. But to force the hood to constantly work in this mode is useless. At maximum speeds, the device makes a loud noise, which only interferes. Therefore, fans with an average power are quite enough for ordinary cooking or heating food.

You should also focus on the dimensions of the room. The amount of air that needs to be updated 10 to 12 times per hour depends on them. To calculate this indicator, you need to calculate the volume of the kitchen, subtract from it the amount of furniture present and multiply by 10. The resulting value will correspond to the optimal level of hood power.

Powerful hood

Type of control

Manufacturers present a choice of equipment with three options for control panels.

Exist:

  • touch panels - the device is incredibly comfortable to use. It is easy enough to touch the intended area with your finger, and the device will begin to complete the task. The fact that work has begun is indicated by an LED;
  • slider type control panels - in order to turn on the hood and adjust the power level, you need to move the slider;
  • panels equipped with buttons - each button is responsible for a particular task.

Sensory hood

Additional functions

The hood functionality can be expanded. Additional features facilitate equipment management and make it more comfortable for the user. Of course, the expansion of the "arsenal" of features cannot but affect the final price of the device.

There are several types of additional functions:

  1. Responsible for the convenient use of the device is a remote control, multi-stage power controls, a touch panel, a display that displays the operating mode. All these features make the hood control easy and enjoyable.
  2. Additional "bonuses" not involved in the removal of air - built-in TV, integrated recipe book, computer, Internet access. The built-in timer allows you not to think about the need to turn off the hood yourself after a certain time. Faber Imago even provides the ability to keep an eye on children who are in another room using video telephony.
  3. Details for the automation of the device - the presence of sensors that detect the presence of smoke and odors, a programming function - to set the delay of shutdown or automatic shutdown after intensive removal of fumes and odors.
  4. Illumination of countertops and stoves due to built-in halogen or LED lamps. Access to lighting control makes it possible to use it as a decorative component of the interior.
  5. The mode of continuous operation according to a given program - allows you to constantly maintain a comfortable microclimate in the room.
