Hood in the interior

Greasy soot is a true enemy of a clean, well-groomed kitchen. Together with the ubiquitous dust, it forms a sticky, black coating that is not so easy to scrape off. Soot formation during cooking can not be avoided, but it is possible to save the white walls after repairs and the surface of the cabinets. This problem is relevant for the studio apartments that have become popular, where the kitchen is combined with a bedroom or living room, and by-products of culinary experiments are distributed throughout all areas of the universal dwelling. One ventilation system to solve the problem will not be enough. She came to the aid of a simple but effective apparatus - an extractor fan. She "collects" any vapor, grease and odors. If initially the hood was used exclusively as a functional technical unit, then later the designers made it a part of the modern interior.

How to choose

The hood is selected based on the characteristics of the kitchen, the intensity of its operation, the totality of the technical characteristics of the apparatus and appearance. The latter plays an important role, because the interior detail should not only work efficiently, but also look beautiful and harmonious. When buying a hood, pay attention to the following aspects:

  • Power;
  • Sizes
  • Type, model;
  • Type of filter;
  • Management method;
  • Decor.

Remember that the aesthetic appearance of the kitchen and the adjacent rooms directly depends on the effectiveness of the chosen technique.

The devices can be conditionally divided into two types, depending on the principle of operation:

  • Flowing;
  • Circulating.

Both types of hoods after switching on create forced draft and, in the literal sense of the word, “suck” air. Flowing it is driven out of the apartment (onto the street or into the general ventilation system). The lack of air will have to be filled, as they say, manually: open windows and doors. Otherwise, air from neighboring rooms will start to get into your apartment, which is unlikely to please anyone. Recently, filters have been installed in hoods of this type, although they already “drive” the entire kitchen child out of the room along with large particles of dust. Of the minuses of the models: in the rest mode, the air duct is blocked, which makes it difficult for clean air to enter from the ventilation.

Circulating devices are considered to be a new generation of inventions. The principle of their work is displayed in the title. These hoods are equipped with powerful filters that form a two-stage cleaning system.The air inside the devices is cleaned in a special tank and returned to the room, so you do not have to worry about constant ventilation.

When installing circulation hoods, attention must be paid to the systematic cleaning of their filters, which are responsible for the efficiency of the entire system. If flow-type devices draw contaminated air under any circumstances, then in the circulation system the cycle depends on the cleaning plates.

Performance and noise

When talking about the performance of the hood, we are talking about the power of the built-in fan. This is a mandatory part of the device, which is responsible for the occurrence of traction. The fan is located at the ventilation inlet or side. Its power is calculated from the volume of air that it can potentially clean in a unit of time. Electric fans work. In the classic hood, one vent is installed, and in the “advanced” models for modern kitchens their number can be increased to two. Powerful fans provide high efficiency of the entire system, but have a noticeable drawback - noise from the work. The higher the performance of the hood, the louder it works. Systems with two fans protect the ears of the owners, because both parts can work at half capacity, and in terms of efficiency they will not yield to an exhaust hood with one fan operating "at full". In such a simple but original way, manufacturers decided to reduce the noise level without compromising performance.

The size

The length and width of the hood play an important role. By dimensions, it should exceed the dimensions of the hob by about 10-15 cm on each side. Regardless of the power, the device will work less efficiently if the evaporation zone exceeds the area of its operation. Accordingly, before buying, be sure to make the necessary measurements so as not to get into a mess and not buy too small a hood. Pay attention to the distance from the hob to the cleaning technique.For gas stoves it should be at least 75 cm, for electrical analogues - 10 centimeters less.

The last tip is not at all one of the fancy rules that can be neglected. These are the basics of fire safety. At gas stoves, the flame rises higher, heating is faster. If the hood is too low, it can easily overheat. Particles of grease, soot and dust accumulating on the filters are easily ignited, which can cause a fire.

Operating modes

There are two modes of operation, as well as types of hoods:

  • Recirculation;
  • Exhaust.

In the second case, the air is cleaned of particles of fat through a filter and removed from the room. The recirculation mode removes not only fat, but also odor. This effect is achieved by double cleaning through an optional charcoal filter. Then, clean and fresh air is returned by the system to the room. Circulating devices are equipped in such a way that their modes change as necessary.

According to experts, the exhaust mode more effectively copes with air pollution. Although only one filter works, the air from the “street”, which replaces the remote one, is cleaner than the one that went through the cleaning procedure. After all, sooner or later, the owners, yes, forget about the timely care of the equipment. In such cases, it successfully "gives" back the accumulated dirt.

Filter Models

Household filters for private use according to the degree of purification are divided into two types:

  • Rough cleaning;
  • Electrostatic.

Although the market now offers filters that need to be cleaned periodically (metal), replaceable filters were considered more convenient. When their life expires, the part is simply removed and a new one is put in its place. The replacement system is simple, so even a layman can handle it. The first remove large particles: pile, dust, fat. The work of the second is invisible to the human eye.They trap the smallest aerosol particles and the remnants of oil mist. Filters differ by type of material:

  • Metallic (mesh or mesh);
  • Coal (porous);
  • Fabric;
  • Fibrous.

In addition, in modern hoods, additional components of the purification system are installed, which allow you to set a special climate control. These include adjustable “catchers”.

Ways of working

The hood can work either in one mode or in a combined one. Circulation models can support either only the recirculation mode, or additionally exhaust. The type of work depends on the settings and the availability of access to the general ventilation system or to the street. Flowing, as a rule, support only the exhaust mode, since their design does not provide additional functions. The control panels for units are of three types:

  • Sensory;
  • Push-button;
  • Slider

The latter are gradually fading into the past. Push-buttons are still on the market among economical models. Touch screens are considered modern, but even the so-called "pseudo-touch" panels begin to displace them. They do not visually differ from the original, but their microcircuits are more reliably protected.

Additional options

The most modern models have advanced functionality. It includes a number of additional options:

  • Ultra-sensitive odor recognition system.
  • On timer
  • Residual fan operation.

The odor recognition system is able to automatically turn on the hood even if the hostess is not nearby. She also intelligently controls the operating modes depending on the amount of vapor. The timer allows you to configure the inclusion of the device for a certain time. For example, you set the soup to cook over low heat, but decided to leave the apartment for half an hour.

After about 10 minutes, the soup will begin to slowly boil, and there will be no one to turn on the hood.This is where the user comes in handy with a convenient delayed start timer. The residual stroke of the fan provides additional operation of the hood even after cooking. At low revs, the fan will remove the remaining fumes and odors, after which it will automatically shut off completely.

In each modern model there are built-in lighting devices, which also vary in type of lighting. They have long ceased to be a gimmick and are installed by default. If you want dishes in pots to look as natural as possible, then give preference to halogen lamps.

Body material

Enamel is considered a common material for the manufacture of an economy-class hood. It is convenient to wash, it is durable and resistant to mechanical damage. Stainless steel machines became one of the most expensive. Steel is not only inferior in characteristics to an enameled surface, but also looks much more elegant and richer. Tinted glass hoods look no less spectacular. Unfortunately, they will have to tinker with when cleaning, because the material is easy to scratch. Also, the surface of the unit is decorated with wood or aluminum-based materials. In the first case, the technique looks in harmony with the kitchen set of the same material, and in the second it becomes a chameleon and easily reflects the color of neighboring objects.

What types exist

Hoods are divided into three classes:

  • Classic;
  • Dome;
  • Recessed (flat).

Depending on the location of the hoods are classified into:

  • Wall mounted
  • Island;
  • Corner

Let us consider in more detail each of the models.

Provence style kitchen

Traditional (classic) or wall

The classical model, although it has a speaking name, is not considered obsolete. The filling of such an extract fully meets modern standards. But its appearance evokes a slight nostalgia and fits perfectly into the interior style of the same name.Traditional models include angular wall hoods. With a non-standard arrangement of the hob (with a bend in the corner), additional equipment is installed to match it. The angle hood not only looks original, but also allows you to significantly save space.

Recessed

The most modern model is built-in. Kitchen sets are usually already pre-equipped with special niches for such a hood. All that remains for the owner is to choose a model to taste and mount it. Integrating such a hood is quite simple. Often they are installed "eternal" filters made of durable metal. They are not removed, but are periodically cleaned. According to reviews, these models fit perfectly into the design, but may be slightly inferior in performance to their more bulky "relatives".

Fireplace (dome) or island

Fireplace systems visually resemble the upper part of the hearth (dome), so they give the kitchen an extra comfort. For this type, a separate ventilation outlet to the duct is required. Initially, such units did not provide for the installation of filters.

Their performance depended on the performance of the fans. Although the model seems outdated at first glance, on the market it is worthy of competition with the most modernized types of hoods, and is still held in the top three. If the hob is not under the wall, you will have to buy an island-type hood. It will hang directly above the stove and create the illusion of a piece of land torn off the mainland, hence the original name. Now it’s fashionable to place the cooking zone in the middle of the room, where it serves as the dividing line between the two “worlds” in combined rooms.

Backlit hood

Vertical (inclined)

This type of hoods is popular among buyers and has a high price. The main disadvantage of the design is its special care.Its filters are in sight, so you will have to monitor their cleanliness constantly so as not to spoil the aesthetic appearance of the kitchen with adhered particles of dirt. Only in modern models filter screens on the exhaust surface are closed with special decorative panels. Inclined hoods look stylish and fit perfectly into the modernist picture of the design of the kitchen, but they are characterized by high-power operation. This will inevitably lead to an excessive consumption of energy.

Unusual solutions for different styles

Hoods in the interior are often used by designers as an additional stylish accent to the kitchen decor. If the materials of the models are not particularly experimented, preferring glass, chrome surfaces and natural wood, then the form opens up space for imagination. In traditional design areas, they resort to imitations of the first devices, which had large dimensions, but looked “grandiose” in the kitchen. Modern styles allow freedom: absolutely flat hoods, triangular, spherical, in the form of a chopped off cylinder or volumetric ring with a filter mesh on a sloping “bottom”. Black, glossy surfaces can be combined with bright matte colors, and decorative panels that hide filters will look catchy accents. In the same way as the furniture set, the hood has become an interior item, an additional finishing touch, which embody bold design ideas.

Conclusion

Hood is not a luxury, but a means of first necessity. If you want to protect the kitchen from by-products of cooking, then you need to purchase this unit in the first place. Hoods are installed in comfortable apartments and in old Khrushchev. A kitchen without this technique looks “lonely” and not well maintained. The owners are unlikely to find time for a permanent general cleaning, and change of wallpaper every few months. Cheaper to get a hood, albeit a simple one.In apartments, the owners of which do not save, on the setting, it will become an original detail of the interior.
