DIY interior for a photo studio

Interior for a photo studio

Photo studios are approached with special attention since the art of painting with light requires professionalism. The minimum size of the premises for filming should be 40 sq.m. The larger the studio, the more opportunities open up for the photographer. In addition to the working area, it is necessary to equip a site for equipment storage, makeup, reception and a relaxation room. The "equipment" of a photo studio varies, and this directly depends on its concept. The interior of such a room is characterized as “flexible”. After all, the mood of photo shoots will change from time to time, and the room should correspond.

In the design of photography studios, two trends are distinguished: European and American. In the states, they prefer to equip huge multi-room premises decorated in the style of minimalism. There are no decorations in the interior, but it is necessary to have large windows - sources of natural light. The entire studio is rented out or only separate rooms, each of which is decorated thematically. European from American differ in scope. The rooms are more modest and smaller. As a rule, different photographs are taken in one room, changing the decor. Of the stylistic trends, loft, hi-tech and minimalism are popular. Let's talk about design options for photo studios and design features.

Equipment and technical characteristics of a photo studio

Although the photo studio is not a living room, it should have some comfort. This is important for models, the mood of which largely determines the success of the shoot. The photographer, who spends most of his time here, should also feel easy and comfortable in the studio, which will affect the quality of his work. In the interior, the largest role is given to equipment that will help to establish a work process without failures and hitches. The second place in the ranking in terms of importance is taken by scenery. Together with the equipment, they will help to create a beautiful picture. To complete the list, furniture and decor are not for filming, but for company employees. Work on a series of shots can take a very long time. Employees also need to relax, eat, arrange small breaks. Let us consider in more detail the stages of creating a design project for a standard photo studio.

Photo Studio Concept

The concept of the studio determines the type of photography that will be carried out in it. In the art of photography, there are many subgenres: reporting, landscape, panorama, documentary, advertising, portrait. Each of the species is still classified into subtypes. Most photos can only be taken outdoors. Studio shooting is conditionally divided into two types:

  • Portrait;
  • Interior.

Interior studio concept

In both cases, people act as the subject of the photograph. However, for portraiture use a minimum of scenery (only the "backdrop" - the background). Therefore, a person must carefully make-up, choose beautiful clothes, style their hair, because he will be in the spotlight. All these actions must be carried out in a separate area of the photo studio. For interior shooting, the preparation is carried out less carefully, since the person is surrounded by a stylish decor, but in fact, a real room with a thematic decor. While viewing a photograph, attention will be scattered between the subject and its surroundings. Studios offering this type of shooting need to select high-quality scenery that decorate individual thematic areas.

Space requirement

A room for a photo studio must meet a number of requirements:

  • High-quality sound insulation. Photo studios do not recommend equipping apartments in residential buildings. We will talk further about why such a taboo is in effect.
  • Good ventilation. If the photographer plans to conduct large-scale shootings with the involvement of a large number of people (makeup artist, stylist, assistants, models themselves), then you will have to ensure high-quality air exchange in the room. From such a "crowd" in the studio it will become stuffy, and the monoblocks that heat the air very much will aggravate the situation. As a result, the model will “leak” makeup, and the photographer himself will not be very comfortable working periodically wiping his forehead.
  • Quality wiring. During the photo session, many devices will work simultaneously, which will create serious loads on the network. This nuance must be taken into account so as not to disrupt the shooting and not to let people down.
  • Powerful heating system. In winter, in rooms with high ceilings, it is difficult to maintain the desired temperature. If the central heating system does not cope with the task, then the studio is equipped with individual heating appliances of high power.
  • Dimensions of the room.Of course, even in the most modest studio, there should be enough space to place decorations, equipment, and technical sites.

Studio room

Another important nuance is the availability of a bathroom. And you need not only a toilet, but also a full-fledged shower, so that the model can calmly wash her hair after an intricate hairstyle or erase makeup. This is simply necessary in cases where they are working on different images during one shoot.

Colors and finishes

To design a photo studio choose a neutral color scheme. As a rule, it consists of white and gray with rare splashes of black. This trio is very reminiscent of the color concept of the loft, minimalism and hi-tech. These directions are considered optimal for designing a photo studio. The flooring is chosen from the most durable materials. Cheap but short-lived linoleum or piece parquet are not even considered. An ideal solution would be a bulk floor - an expensive but very reliable material that can withstand heavy loads. Tile is also suitable, but not simple ceramic, but porcelain (more durable). For wall decoration use textured plaster or regular paint. You should not spend big money on wallpapers or wall panels, which with a large flow of people will quickly lose their respectable appearance. The ceiling is also plastered or covered with plasterboard tiles, if the studio is located in a former workshop. Such a solution is very convenient, since tiles can be removed and holders for additional equipment attached to the frame.

Photo studio in bright colors

Brick walls painted in different shades are not only an integral attribute of the loft, but also a luxurious backdrop, that is, a natural background with a special texture.

Equipment

Each studio should have a minimal set of equipment. The necessary attributes include:

  • Reflectors (light disks).Although these details of the photo studio at first glance may seem insignificant, in fact, no shooting is complete without them. Reflectors are used to redirect light. One or more light disks may be used for photography. Depending on the color of the surface, they are classified into four types: black, white, golden and silver. The first kind of light absorbs and helps to remove the "side" glare. The purpose of the white reflector is exactly the opposite - it scatters the flow. Silver is used to get cold, and golden is used for warm lighting. Light disks are canvases stretched over a frame frame with a stand. To enhance or weaken the effect of the reflector, photographers place them at different distances from the subject.
  • Outbreaks. This studio equipment helps to direct the flow of light to the object in such a way as to create contrast, emphasize shadows, make it more voluminous. Without flashes, the photos will not work out “alive”. The least powerful are required for portraiture. Professional photographers prefer to buy flash, the power of which can be adjusted, adapting to the nature of the shooting. The most common form is monoblocks (pulsed flashes).
  • Studio backgrounds.
  • Photo Umbrellas. They, like reflectors, are used to redirect light fluxes, scattering or concentration at a specific point.
  • Softboxes In fact, these are analogues of photo umbrellas, only worn on light sources. Such nozzles are more compact, so they gradually displace their more bulky predecessors.
  • Lighting is the most important element among studio equipment. They can be professional and semi-professional. The higher the quality of the lighting device, the more options in its settings and the higher sensitivity to color temperature.
  • Small items. This category includes adapters, reflectors, cells. Most of the equipment is fixed on flashes.

In addition to the above equipment, in each photo studio there are decorations that are used for popular art photography.

Light and its types

Lighting in a photo studio is classified into two types:

  • Soft or diffused. The light is distributed evenly, without the formation of sharp shadows.
  • Tough. Helps to get a contrast image.
Based on these types of lighting, two types of lighting solutions are distinguished: light-tone (soft) and black-and-white (hard). To create beautiful pictures, use the following types of illumination of the object:
  • Background. Designed to separate a person from the "backdrop", helps create volume.
  • Drawing. A basic backlight that creates the desired lighting for the subject. As a rule, she is placed in front of the model at an angle that the photographer adjusts.
  • Contour (contour). Creates emphasis on a specific site.
  • Filling. Designed to soften chiaroscuro.
  • Modeling. Helps create glare.

Lighting devices, depending on the nature of light emission, are classified into constant and pulsed. The first shine steadily, without interruption. Pulse work like short flashes.

Why is sound insulation necessary?

The wider the scale of filming, the more people are attracted to them. As mentioned above, this is not only a group of models (or a family with young children) and a photographer, but also stylists, make-up artists, dressers, assistants, lighting. There are a lot of noise from so many people. The process of creating a photograph is not only a click of the camera, but a kind of art. It is characterized by a special atmosphere that creates a mood. Quite often, music helps. For dynamic photo shoots, rhythmic compositions are included, and melancholy melodies are suitable for delicate, romantic shootings. Photographers, in order to give instructions to the team, are forced to shout out all this noise-gum. In order not to disturb others, it is necessary to conduct soundproofing of the room.It is for this reason that it is not recommended to equip studios in residential buildings adjacent to apartments.

Photo Studio Background

Studio backgrounds are used everywhere, as this is the easiest way to transform the place of shooting in a couple of seconds and move the model to an old building with cracked stucco on the walls or to a luxurious room where classic wallpapers with ornate gilded print create an elegant interior. Most often, these are canvas made of paper or fabric, stretched on a special frame-frame. Background helps create the mood of the photo. Canvases come in different colors and textures. Studio backgrounds made of paper are classified as disposable. They are sold in rolls. Before shooting, a piece of the desired length is cut, installed behind the model, and then discarded. Fabric backgrounds are considered reusable, if necessary they are twisted into a compact roller that you can carry with you. Washable background. There are also double-sided canvases.

Choose the interior of a photo studio

In large photo studios, there are areas where on an ongoing basis they shoot families, young couples, children, girls and boys. Interiors can be permanent or temporary. The former include a romantic, stylish, elegant setting, that is, those types of furniture that do not lose their relevance all year. Temporary interiors include seasonal and festive. Consider each type in more detail.

Romantic theme

To create romance, you don’t need to decorate the rooms with a lot of details, just a couple of carefully selected elements that will help create the “right” mood. These romantic interiors are attractive: they are easy to “assemble” and just as easy to remake. For example, for a light composition in Provence style, an elegant wooden table with a carving painted in white is selected. A miniature casket with inlay, a porcelain vase with a pair of live lilies or magnificent asters, a candlestick on a thin twisted leg are placed on the countertop.Nearby have the same elegant, folding chair made of wood for the model. An openwork shawl of a light lilac shade is casually thrown over it, allowing one of its ends to freely fall to the floor. A large bird cage is placed near the table legs. Complete the composition with two translucent curtains, which will play the role of a weightless frame of an artistic portrait.

Stylish locations

Stylish interiors include absolutely any design that was created according to the canonical rules of a particular direction. Popular locations include loft, art nouveau, provence, high tech and minimalism. For example, to create the first version, a textured wall with an old brown brickwork, which is illuminated with bare lights on the wire, is enough. A luxurious, comfortable black leather sofa with a carriage tie is placed against its background. Nearby they put a lamp on a long leg with a metal shade. The wall is additionally decorated with signs with inscriptions.

Provence style photo studio

Loft is easy to implement in old rooms. This style does not even need additional decoration. The main highlight of the loft is luxurious furniture located in the abandoned shops of former factories. To stylize a modern photo studio (art nouveau), you will have to work on the background. Wave Style is known for its luxurious wall, floor, and sophisticated ceiling designs. In the interiors there are always elegant stained glass windows decorated in mosaic technique, painting, an abundance of decorative elements from wood, expensive fabrics and forged details.

Seasonal topics

Seasonal topics are related to the seasons. To create spring interiors you will need a large number of artificial flowers that imitate living ones in a qualitative way. Bouquets can be made independently. They are placed in vases, baskets and even glasses. The color scheme is kept in pink, lilac or yellow tones with "spots" of greenery. To create winter interiors, the Scandinavian style is taken as a sample. The color palette will consist of white, blue, cyan, green and brown. It is advisable to add "eco-elements" to the interior - a wall made of wood saw cuts, compositions of branches instead of flowers, moss, real stumps. Homeliness will be presented to pictures by a fireplace and a live fire. Autumn interiors are traditionally created in red-yellow-gold tones. "Back" can be made independently from small bouquets and garlands made up of fallen leaves. They complement the design with sunflowers - typical colors of autumn. In interiors, the presence of a living fire in a fireplace or candles, which resonates with a warm checkered blanket and a cup of hot mulled wine, is also desirable. For summer interiors, butterflies and living greens are used: single flowers, twigs, bouquets, topiary. Juicy, bright shades prevail in the color palette: yellow, green, blue, pink.

Festive interior

Decorating festive interiors, as a rule, is done with your own hands. By the New Year, they will equip a cozy room with a decorated Christmas tree, a decorative fireplace with firewood, garlands of rain, beads and home-made snowflakes. Coniferous wreaths with tiny gifts in shiny wrappers and bells look luxurious. Rowan branches will contrast perfectly with the snow-white background. A cozy armchair is placed near the fireplace, with a plaid hanging from the arm of the armchair. Complement the composition with a large knitted puff. To decorate the interior by March 8, they use flowers that are able to please any representative of the fair sex and, in combination, are a symbol of romantic feminine nature. It is better to choose a light background, so that bouquets and flower garlands contrast with it. By Easter, you can’t find a better decor than an artificial lawn, which randomly place baskets, fake eggs, and garden figurines of rabbits.

Interiors for children

The interiors for kids are decorated with miniature furniture sets, many dolls and children's toys, balls, houses and garlands of flags. Delicate interiors are created for tiny princesses: crazy tea drinking at an elegant table, a magnificent castle from a fairy tale, a puppet world. The theme from "Alice in Wonderland" is particularly popular. For example, the place of shooting is made out with objects of gigantic dimensions (spools of thread, balls of yarn, buttons the size of a saucer), imitating the stage of travel of the heroine of Lewis Carroll. For the boys, designers or funny cars made of wooden logs with tricky "faces" are suitable as decorations. For the mischievous, stylish backgrounds are chosen, where a lot of multi-colored traces from children's hands are imprinted on white. Young gentlemen can be placed in the library interior: with bookshelves and a set (chair, table) made of expensive wood.

Conclusion

Work in a photo studio is considered more effective than outside. The indoor master himself manages the conditions, adjusts and corrects them. This becomes the key to a good shooting result. Equipment and interior details in the studio should be arranged according to a pre-thought out scheme. The availability of convenient routes for quick movement around the premises is a must. Comfort, conciseness, easy coziness - these are the main features that the interior of a photo studio should have.
