Loft style cafe

Loft style cafe interior

Loft style dates back to the 40s of the last century. The homeland of this style is USA. It was during this period that land in the central part of large cities became very expensive. This forced the owners of industrial enterprises to move their enterprises out of town. Huge areas of warehouses and workshops were freed. Such premises combined a relatively low rent with good functional characteristics. Over time, they were chosen for workshops, exhibition rooms and housing by people of creative professions - artists, designers, sculptors, architects. Then came the fashion for housing-loft, it became fashionable, exclusive and elite. The interior of the cafe in the loft style ("attic"), restaurants decorated for creative workshops received great popularity.

About the style - main features and characteristics

The main concept of the style is the destruction of stereotypes, as much space and air as possible, the minimum number of partitions. Separation of the room into zones is carried out using the arrangement of furniture, various shades, finishing materials. Partitions, if they exist, are symbolic, made of transparent and translucent material. The presence of industrial motifs in the interior — stairs, fittings, masonry, deliberately rough, “sloppy” plaster, and an uncovered ventilation system — is mandatory. These gross elements in some incomprehensible way are combined with modern, trendy and very expensive furniture, mirrors, lighting fixtures. Non-standard accessories are welcome.

The room must be large and high, although you can equip a loft on limited square meters. The windows are large, bright. The advantage of the style is that it involves the maximum use of artificial lighting. If the room has several small windows, it is advisable to combine them into one large structure. The use of plastic double-glazed windows is acceptable, but wooden or metal frames with a large number of segments will look much more organic. Curtains are unlikely to fit into an industrial interior. It is better to replace them with curtains made of light-transmitting material, or with ordinary blinds. Lamps are preferably used pendant. High ceilings allow you to divide the space vertically into several levels connected by metal stairs.

The main characteristics of the loft are freedom, simplicity, and the parade is not luxury, but unpretentious. It is the antithesis of flatulence, chic and excessive luxury.

Black floor in the interior

This is a fresh and bold style, project development opens up opportunities that are not available for other types of design. It turns out that in rudely crafted furniture, unplastered walls and bare communications there is a peculiar beauty. Here is a description of the basic elements of the interior.

Style color scheme

Color schemes emphasize urban elements of the interior and urban range. This is the dominance of brick, gray, blue, metal. One of the walls of a cafe or restaurant can be accented using other finishing materials. It can be mosaic tiles or ordinary uncoated concrete. One of the favorite design decisions of a cozy cafe in the loft style is the use of natural brickwork, as if laid out with your own hands, or its realistic imitation.

Finish

The loft style, despite the outward disorder, is considered luxurious and bourgeois. In fact, if you intelligently and competently approach the matter, you can get an inexpensive attractive interior of the institution that fully complies with the style canons.

Walls

So, bare concrete or natural brickwork of an accent wall is a classic of the genre. However, not everyone likes this extreme. You can do it in another way: decorate the walls with snow-white or the shade of ivory with water-based paint. Using one of the walls as an accent allows you to simultaneously solve two opposite problems: to emphasize the unity of the room and zoning the space. By the way, it is not necessary to use natural masonry or rough plastered concrete. You can use wallpaper with an imitation of such a finish.

Floor

The best option is to make the flooring board or use a laminate. Unpainted boards with a natural wood texture, covered with transparent varnish, look beautiful. Somewhat less often, ceramic tiles, natural or artificial stone are used as flooring. Concrete fits well with the concept of style, but cleaning the rough surface from contamination will be problematic. Therefore, it is better to refuse such an idea. But the bulk floor will come in handy. Skirting boards are used wood or painted wood.

Ceiling

The simplest option, which makes the room even brighter and more voluminous, is painting the ceiling in white. This is especially true for rooms with low ceilings. Coarse wooden partition walls or pipes fixed to the ceiling look good. The "attic" atmosphere is transmitted more strongly. Between farms you can hang lamps on chains. There is an even more radical option: to leave the ceiling completely unfinished.

Furniture

The tables in the cafe or bar can be used different: emphasized, elegant or, conversely, rude, with a touch of brutality and uncouthness. But, in any case, they must be functional, universal, comfortable and practical.

Furniture in a cafe in the loft style

In the coffee, dining area and at the bar use such types of furniture as sofas, armchairs, ottomans and chairs (regular or bar). Design is the most diverse. This makes it possible to make a non-standard, unique and very attractive room. Strong screw stools, roughly knocked down bench benches, homely comfortable chairs and bar stools on elegant metal legs perfectly adjoin each other. These diverse items are united by the fact that they allow you to create maximum comfort for visitors. This makes the cafe loft so attractive.

Shelves and racks in the interior are distinguished by strict geometry and roughness of lines, the maximum use of natural materials, the absence of decor and natural colors. The base of the metal profile and the surface of solid wood create in the aggregate the impression of strength, reliability. It’s not necessary to use old boards to make furniture. Artificial aging helps to achieve the desired effect. All items placed on shelves, as if on display. Maximum openness is present here.

Lighting

The loft is very bright. Lighting devices are something you should not save on. The choice of a fixture depends entirely on the taste preferences of the cafe owner. It can be a fancy pendant chandelier (fortunately, the height of the room allows it), spotlights with a change in the direction of lighting or streetlights. Additional lighting can be created using table lamps with cloth lampshades decorated with forging. Devices imitating vintage and antiquity look great next to completely modern spotlights and LED strips. Electrical wiring is fixed to the walls and ceiling. Thus, the impression of a temporary design. Accumulation of dissimilar light bulbs to highlight a specific area is welcome.
Natural light is provided by large windows. For their design, blinds or symbolic transparent curtains are quite enough. You can leave them completely open.

Architectural Details

A characteristic feature of a loft-style coffee shop is industrial details. Absolutely everything reminds of the “proletarian origin” of the room: pipes, communications, stairs, perhaps some devices typical of industrial production. A special architectural detail is the windows: large, well-permeable, devoid of the classic familiar curtains. At the same time, the elements of the abandoned workshop are very well adjacent to modern technology, the old to the trendy.

About the bar

The bar counter is one of the characteristic elements of the interior made in the loft style. It is a robust design designed for continuous operation and able to cope with significant loads. Most often, the rack has an all-metal base, providing functionality, wear resistance and stability. A wooden worktop blends in well with the metal frame. The magnificent tandem of wood and metal is symbolized by the combination of modern and classical elements inherent in the loft style.

Accessories and decor

Accessories in the loft are unusual, as, indeed, are all interior elements. This is not to say that they are not being given attention. It is unlikely that there is a place for a painting with seals or figurines. Urban design somehow does not have this. All decorative elements look as if they were hastily made from improvised materials. It can be newspaper or magazine clippings in frames, photographs, picture posters with unusual color solutions or just frames without pictures. Traffic signs or graffiti painting are also used as decor. An excellent decor option is a drawing made on the wall with charcoal. Non-standard, but very interesting accessories of such a room look like modern refrigerators, music centers and even washing machines. Elements of urban culture such as bicycles can be used as accessories for decorating a room. A useful element of the interior with two levels is a rough wooden or metal staircase, "like in a factory."

Recommendations of designers on the design of a loft in a cafe

There are various ways to design a loft for a cafe, pub or coffee shop. However, there is a list of general recommendation programs from design specialists, which will undoubtedly be useful to you.

  • The layout of the room is open, with the allocation of zones using light, color or textured contrasts.
  • Cold walls. It is desirable that it be concrete or brickwork. If plastering concrete, then the plaster should be rough. It is possible to use panels with imitation of natural materials. Glass interior elements are welcome.
  • We must not forget that in the loft style ventilation, cables, pipes are necessary interior attributes. Therefore, they must be in sight.
  • Furniture - deliberately massive and rough, with wooden and metal elements. It can be dark or light. Sometimes when designing a cafe-loft, modern furniture is also quite successfully used. Archaic and trendy exist in the neighborhood quite peacefully and organically. In addition to the usual sofas and armchairs, shelves or racks for placing books and accessories fit into the interior of the loft.
  • The use of beautiful plants in the arrangement of the interior somewhat softens the masculinity and brutality of the loft. The use of upholstery made of high-quality high-quality textiles makes the room more comfortable.
  • A good solution for a cafe-loft is equipment in the premises of a real fireplace. The institution will turn out not only cozy, but also atmospheric.
  • Loft floors are mostly concrete and wood. Allowed the use of laminate and ceramic tiles, stylized natural stone.

This is the embodiment of modesty, harmony and minimalism. In addition, the loft provides an opportunity to unfold imagination in full force, to work out a thousand options for decoration. The basic details of the project can be supplemented with accessories and various elements that help create an individual design. The specific design option depends on the concept of the institution. The room can be decorated in a brutal industrial manner or with elements of bohemianism. It is good if the exterior of the room matches the interior design.
