Corners for tiles in the bathroom

Tile Corner

Tile is a self-sufficient material, but it and grout in between should be protected from water and dirt, while hiding the imperfection of joints. The solution to the problem was corners (trims, layouts) - a standard and sought-after finish option to this day. They decorate and strengthen vertical, horizontal and inclined surfaces: inside buildings and outside. Corners protect the tiles from damage and hide the flaws of the edges, prevent the grinding of two elements that are at an angle of 90 ° or less. For the interior design, uniforms are sold, including an improved configuration. Something similar is used in an expensive classic setting. In other cases, the usual corner for the tile takes on aesthetic and practical functions. Planks are installed in all rooms where there is tile on the walls.

Features

Corners for tiles perform protective, decorative and masking functions. The design is usually installed immediately, but it also happens that they simply hide the breakaway part of the tile and at the same time prevent further destruction of the finish. Planks also protect against moisture, fungus and mold. Do not forget about the decorative purpose, because without borders the room with tiles on the outer corners would have looked “inadequate” in a modern way. With the help of corners, tile sheets and compositions are formed, transitions are formed. Use them with small mosaic fragments, large plates on the floor of the balcony and bathroom. Ease of installation is also not the last nuance - any person who at least once held tools in their hands will cope with the task. The hidden function is human safety: injuries would have been possible without a corner. A wide range of parts for assembly of structures is available to consumers.

Advantages and disadvantages

Standard plastic corners have a minimum number of weaknesses, but it is worth noting their fragility. Nothing bad will happen from a small press, but if the impact turns out to be stronger, then damage can spread to the tile.

The disadvantage of all types of products is the loss of relevance, because a variety of coatings quickly go out of fashion. This indicator is relative, but when buying a corner you should still consider how long the product will retain its original appearance. Corners also make tile repair difficult. There are much more pluses and they are more significant. Corners improve the design, protect against damage, form compositions, prevent the penetration of water and insects, promote hygiene.

Planks increase the reliability of fastening the cladding itself.At the same time, products are produced for different placement options: some products are mounted on walls, others on stairs, floors.

Corner Material for Tile

The choice lies between ceramics and the two leaders of the modern materials market: metal and plastic. Metal products are usually represented by aluminum and stainless steel, and plastic - durable PVC. For all characteristics in general, materials can be placed in order from metal to ceramics, where the first type of product is better and the last one is inferior to the rest.

In terms of resistance to moisture, PVC and ceramics are leaders. By availability - plastic. In terms of ease of installation and functionality, ceramics are inferior to "competitors", as well as plastic in decorative qualities. At the moment, the market offers corners with various types of surfaces, including color, texture, additional coatings, and reflective properties. Taking into account all the possibilities, PVC can be considered the most promising material: it is easier to give the desired shape, including for decorative and technical reasons.

PVC

Polyvinyl chloride corners have waterproof properties, due to their lightness they do not load the tiles. The material is easily processed, so consumers can choose from an assortment for a different interior in all price categories, in different colors. Decorative options are also made of PVC. Plastic strips are convenient to use and easy to install - due to their elasticity and low density.

PVC slats can suffer severe impact and constant exposure to heat or cold. After several years of operation, the appearance of yellowness and a grayish tint is possible. In order to avoid defects and damage, you should follow the instructions for the care of plastic products. For example, polyvinyl chloride is not afraid of 90% of external destructive factors. The material does not burn well, does not fade, does not become moldy.

Metal

A versatile material with many advantages and a classic color scheme. Corners of different types of metal are normally combined with each other in the same interior, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. Metal products are usually thin and light, so the integrity of the tile during edging will not suffer.

In this regard, aluminum is most suitable - they are lighter than others. All materials have a corrosion-resistant coating, are durable and resistant to ultraviolet rays. Metal is the most durable option. The strips of this material have the ability to withstand a variety of loads, temperature contrasts. Metal corners have wear resistance, high impact and compression strength. Among the minuses are the high cost and the tendency to damage the outer layer of the material.

Corners are made of materials:

  • aluminum;
  • chrome plated steel;
  • of stainless steel;
  • brass.

Ceramics

Ceramic planks are used to create an aesthetically holistic picture, in combination with the main material of the tile. Sometimes they are sold with the cladding as one set. The material has a low impact strength, but good performance in terms of compression. Ceramics warm up slowly, do not emit hazardous compounds, do not warp from water. The glazed surface is highly hygienic.

It does not require special care and at the same time it is operated about the same as metal. Among the significant shortcomings, the price is primarily noted. This is not the best option for budget repairs. In addition, when laying, difficulties arise - the material is stiff. Ceramic products are difficult to process, difficult to cut, require a “special” glue. Sometimes self-installation fails.

Varieties

For different types of joints, the corresponding options for the corners were designed. First of all, the width of the trim is important.Planks used to have sharp points, but now there are plugs to improve performance and protect against injuries. The main classification, in turn, identifies models for internal and external angles. The first variety is usually more bulky and has a complex structure.

Planks of the external type are a strip without additional devices and internal structure. At the same time, there are also wide modifications, and they perform an additional aesthetic function. Corner structures are distinguished by place / method of installation. Typically, planks are installed inside buildings, but for placement on the street there are hardened modifications. Vertical and horizontal products differ significantly in the shape of the profile.
In addition to room corners, layouts are also mounted on:

  • horizontal surfaces;
  • steps;
  • plumbing.

Interior

The use of internal corners shares the views of experts. Some of them are inclined to believe that the internal joints look better without trims. Moreover, the use is justified if the tile in the corners was cut. In addition, for large rooms, the best option is with a wide wall plinth. The best place to use internal trims are bathrooms, showers and bathrooms.

The relief of the trims for finishing the internal corners includes a groove for tiles, a rib with perforation and a concave front side. Installation of trims is started after finishing one of the vertical surfaces. The finished coating is necessary so that the corner can be made behind the tile. Wizards sometimes simplify the task: remove the back and “put” the front on silicone. The installation is then done after the completion of the facing work, and the product will not interfere with the assessment of the conformity of the seams.

Inner corner

Outer

External joints in the interior are finished with a large number of fasteners. The outer bar will be a convenient solution, including if the tile in the corner "lay down" with an overlap. The external trim has a relatively simple design.The width is 7-11 mm, and the length of the element is up to 2.5 m. The installation of the outer corner in the vast majority of cases is carried out in only one standard way.

Manipulations with trimming and mounting on silicone are practiced only to repair the profile. The shape of the outer planks does not initially imply any changes. Installation of strips at external corners is done before the lining is completed. The calculation of the gap between the walls is not worth the effort, although it is possible. A series of mistakes will end with a complete alteration of the walls. In turn, in the absence of an exact match in size, the corner is taken a little wider.

How to choose

The main criteria:

  1. Material.
  2. Groove width
  3. Profile.
  4. The size.
  5. Decorativeness.
  6. Colors.

Corner constructions are a great alternative to skidding joints. Installation will be much cheaper, and the appearance will be interesting in its own way. The first step is determined with the material of manufacture. PVC constructions are constantly being improved, metal ones are designed for various loads, and ceramic ones organically look with tiles. Panels are selected taking into account the thickness of the tiles. Moreover, the profile shape of the corner structure must correspond to the method and place of use.

The size of the front part is an individual moment, and the guidelines for its choice are the dimensions of the room and its style. Other selection criteria, decorativeness and color are also closely related to design. Painted and textured products are much less common, so with their help you can highlight your home. Drawing and relief are combined with the style of the room, and if the design is absent as such, they buy something modern and universal.

Corner Selection

Tile Groove Width

The ideal figure is +1 mm compared to tile thickness. For a 6-mm tile, for example, trim No. 7, etc. is suitable. If the plates differ in thickness, then they take the greatest value for the landmark.Finishing material is chosen as high quality as possible so that this does not happen. In the worst case, it will be necessary to plan the joints and select the same thickness elements for them.

Another thing is if the original plan was to clad two walls with different types of tiles. But in this case, the thickness is controlled so that there is not too much difference. The size mismatch can be compensated by a sealant, including silicone based. There are also grooves of a special design to hide all defects and align joints. Corners without a channel are selected in exact accordance with the size of the tile.

Color and pattern

Corners used to be sold in muted shades or classic colors: white, gray, black. Then there were bright and painted options. Classic tones are used universally. Dirty and muffled color options are suitable for the appropriate environment - calm, simple or minimalist. Bright and even acidic shades are relevant for the interior with a contrasting color of the walls.

Monotonous planks are combined with tiles with the same repeating pattern. If the picture is distributed over a large area and has abstract features, then any corners will do. As a rule, the background color of the tiles is selected with a difference of 1-2 tones with the main color of the walls. In many cases, wide planks with a dirty color in medium light and with a patterned monophonic pattern - darker than the background, will come in handy. There are no special restrictions, and everything is decided by the wishes of the residents, but too variegated painted options should be avoided.

Color selection

The form

Standard models have different profile and surface shapes, but at the same time some of the following parameters: 2500 × 7, 2500 × 9 or 2500 × 11 mm. The products have two different sides, the front - for decoration and protection and the back - for connecting to the tile.

There are 4 types of profiles: П-, Т-, Г- and Н-shaped.L-shaped is also called angular, and they are used at the junction of vertical and horizontal coatings. H- and T-shaped act as a dividing insert to connect the floor trim at the same level.

Corner shape

The variant in the form of the letter "P" is the most decorative, it is used at the final stage of work. According to the shape of the surface, the corners are divided into convex, concave, flat, with a texture, etc. The last two types are considered to be designer. The standard concave ones are mounted at the internal corners, and the rounded convex ones are mounted at the external joints.

Corner shape

The shape of the corners should be as safe as possible so as not to harm small children!

Mounting Features

Installation of corner structures is usually carried out during cladding. Some masters mount the first horizontal elements before the tile, after calculating the height. In the future, the finish is simply brought into the formed groove. The same decision is made if you first need to determine the height to which you should lay the wall tile. Excess material is then trimmed. Practice shows that the earlier the corners were fixed, the more accurate the compositions are. The first priority is to control the fixation of the slats. Specialists in this field recommend marking and sawing the edges of the plates for compatibility on complex and uneven sections of corners. These measures will affect the visual perception of the finished coating. Defects can be eliminated after the glue dries, which takes about 24 hours.
Other nuances:

  1. The accuracy of the bar should be checked as often as possible and before each action.
  2. Above 45 ° angles work with universal triangles.

Conclusion

Sloppy open edges of the tiled coating "remained" in the distant past. Now they are being processed or hidden. In the second case, they use corners - it turns out easier and cheaper, as well as more functional and safer.Consumers have access to products with thoughtful connections for working with different surfaces. In the last decade, new parts have appeared for a smoother, safer and better quality fit. The most popular manufacturing materials are PVC, metal and ceramics, while other options have not yet been able to expand their niche. Corner strips are mounted on internal and external corners, with a functional and decorative shape. Profiles are P-, T-, G- and H-shaped. The width of the groove, in turn, must exceed the thickness of the tile. Corners are usually mounted during finishing, sometimes on a completely finished coating.
