Options for laying tiles in the bathroom

Decorating a bathroom with a tile (ceramic tile) is an original and budget design solution. The material is made in several ways and is characterized by increased strength. The name "tile" he received in Germany, where one of the first large-scale production in the city of Metlach was established. It still exists and is famous for the high quality of products that go through the double firing procedure. In the traditional version, the tiles are square in shape. Ceramics belong to one of the oldest finishing materials. Not only utensils were made of clay, but also approximately the same pieces, which were used to mosaic the walls of temples and palaces. The tiles were a little thinner than the bricks, painted and covered with a thick layer of glaze, which protected the surface from mechanical damage. For facing simple houses, the material was not used because of its high cost. The most ancient find dates back to 3,000 BC. and was discovered on the ruins of a settlement between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. You can see the ancient tiled pattern on the famous Babylonian Gate Ishtar. They were erected during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar in honor of the fertility goddess. The monument is perfectly preserved: the gates are decorated with images of mystical animals (sirush and bulls) folded according to the mosaic principle, which serve as a good example of the high level of skill of ancient artisans.

After the second discovery of mass production technology, tiles began to be used as a decor for homes. In the Middle Ages, Italian craftsmen received the "eastern" secret of ceramic cladding and distributed their products throughout Europe. The production was established on the island of Mallorca, which gave the name to the tile: “majolica”. The options for laying tiles in the bathroom have several dozen methods that will help create a unique decoration of the room. According to the production method, tiles are classified into several types:

Cutting.Natural stone (usually sandstone) is cut into identical pieces. The method is considered expensive because of the complexity of the processing of the source material.
Casting.Tile is obtained as a result of firing special molds, where the mass of clay is pre-poured. Belongs to the most ancient technologies.
Press making.High-tech method that allows you to get a dense, and accordingly durable material.
By extrusion. The clay mass is “driven” through a special machine, which pushes it into molds.

Ceramic tiles are used to decorate floors, walls, "aprons", stoves, and with a special kind of paving, they lay paths on neat city streets. In the design of houses, tiles are usually used in bathtubs and in kitchens. Both rooms are characterized by an aggressive microclimate, which the material successfully withstands.

How to choose

Although the modern market for finishing materials offers vinyl tiles, PVC panels, a lining, specially treated, tile is still out of competition. Before you go shopping at a hardware store, you need to develop a tile laying program and choose the right one among the variety of textures, colors and sizes. Tiles are made in three forms:

  • Square. These "cubes" have three dimensional standards: 15x15 cm, 30x30 cm and 50x50 cm. The smallest format is used for wall decoration.
  • Rectangular Usually it has dimensions 25x20 cm. As a rule, such a tile for the floor imitates a parquet board or laminate, and for walls - a brick.
  • Custom shapes. Used in modern design areas. Honeycombs, circles, pentagons, triangles look spectacular and unusual.

Bathroom Tile Design

The composition of the tile includes clay, feldspars and quartz sand, which acts as a "frame", which retains the shape of the product when fired. The entire set of ceramic materials is classified into two groups:

  • Bikotura. Wall tiles inside the housing. Enamel covering it gives the surface a stylish sheen. The material is durable, resistant to mechanical damage, temperature changes, changes in humidity. Bikotura is easy to clean and calmly refers to contacts with all types of household chemicals.
  • Monocottura.A more durable variety, which is decorated with walls, floor inside the house and paths in the yard. For the street, special frost-resistant models are used.

Recessed Ceiling Lights

It is also conditionally possible to divide ceramic materials for decoration into three subgroups:

  • Porcelain tile. Material with low moisture absorption. According to the characteristics, porcelain tiles are similar to stone, and in composition - to porcelain.
  • Cotto. Material obtained by firing red clay. Its surface is not covered with glaze and has a characteristic "rough" texture. Cotto has exclusively natural shades within the red-brown color scheme.
  • Clinker. It is made by extrusion. May have a glazed surface or different textured solutions. Single firing at ultra-high temperatures provides low moisture permeability, which makes it possible to finish this material not only with bathtubs, even pools. For them, "tiled" sets of steps, corners, gutters are produced.

Bamboo on the wall

According to the texture, tiles are classified into glossy, matte and “rough”. The latter type includes imitation of reptile skin “turtle”, which in the presence of illumination looks spectacular on accent walls. As for the color scheme, the variety of shades and patterns allows you to choose the option for your interior. Especially popular are blue, green, blue tones, characteristic of the marine stylistic decision of the bathroom. Also using contrasting and vibrant combinations: black and white, red-gray, yellow-green. In spacious rooms, each separate zone (bath, toilet, shower) is distinguished by a specific shade. In the old Khrushchevs, where there are small combined bathrooms, they do not recommend experimenting with color zoning, but use tiles of only light colors, which visually expand the boundaries of space. According to the texture, tiles are divided into:

  • Solid color. Used for simple and austere interiors.
  • Imitating the surface of natural materials (granite, marble, wood).
  • With repeating patterns. The "patterned" surface is usually decorated with floral ornaments or geometric shapes.
  • Mosaic. Such a tile forms a complex shade composition or a large picture on the surface.

Unusual forms are most often embodied in clinker tiles, as the extrusion process allows you to realize the wildest fantasies of designers.

How to choose a tile according to style

For those who love classic styles, a traditional layout of tiles with the ombre effect is suitable. Color gradation can smoothly pass through the entire surface or have restrictions in the form of decorative borders between tinted areas. In the Provence style, tiles with delicate ornaments and delicate prints on a white background are used. In a country, a combination of plain plates with patterned surfaces is used. Brown and gray prevail in colors. In the loft style, a clinker in the form of bricks with a surface characteristic of the material will look appropriate and beautiful. Minimalism prefers a monochromatic tile or a combination of two neutral colors in a checkerboard pattern (black and white, gray-blue). Also, this oriental style is characterized by imitation of marble and rough texture. Tiles of gray, black, white colors or with "silver" surfaces are laid in high-tech.

Tile Layout Methods

Not only the aesthetic appearance of the finished finish depends on the layout method, but also the material consumption. The most popular styling options include the “golden” five methods: direct, diagonal, horizontal, vertical and inverse. The more complex can be classified as mosaic, modular and staggered. Combined options are also found, they are usually used when combining materials of different sizes, colors and textures. If you lay out the tiles in accordance with all the rules of the selected method, then the finished picture will be easily perceived visually and emphasize the dignity of the room.

Straight

Even a novice decorator will be able to lay a “seam in seam” tile. With a direct layout, each tile in the next row should repeat the location of its neighbor from the previous one. In this case, only an even tab of the first level is important, on which all the others will rely. As a rule, tiled walls have a simple, but beautiful and neat appearance. The method is characterized by high material savings.

Scatter

With the method of stripping, adjacent seams between fragments are not joined. Each subsequent row is shifted to a length equal to half the tile. This method imitates masonry on the walls and a laminate or parquet board on the floor. The color scheme is usually selected appropriate. The material for such a finish will take about the same as for the direct method. However, you have to tinker with slicing fragments, as one row of two will normally start with half the tiles.

Diagonal

The diagonal type of laying, in turn, is classified into three types:

  • Simple with respect to the seam. The result is a composition of smooth vertical rhombs. Every second row will end with a triangle, so you will have to cut as many pieces as in the case of the unscramble method.
  • Laying with inserts. For this option, tiles of two sizes are used: large rectangles and small squares. Inside each of the four large tiles is a small fragment.
  • Laying with a seam offset to the side (herringbone). Each subsequent row of tiled rectangles reverses direction. As a result, neighboring fragments lie on the short side on half the long edge of the lower tiles.

The more complex the type of diagonal laying, the more time the work will take. Laying tiles with an offset to the side is recommended if there are defects in the material: deviations from angles of 90 degrees or inconsistencies in the length and width of each fragment.

Modular

The modular method allows you to create an original seam pattern on the surface of the floor or walls in the bathroom. The essence of the method lies in the name. For decoration using fragments that are different in size and sometimes color. You can lay tiles horizontally or diagonally. Topical compositions using two and three different modules, usually rectangular and square shapes. The more diverse fragments, the more difficult the resulting picture. In catalogs, manufacturers usually mark tiles that allow modular laying with the designation “modulare”.

Horizontal

The method is used for tiles of rectangular shapes. With this type of laying, wide edges are located in a horizontal plane. Actively apply the practice for small rooms, which are thus visually stretched to hide the lack of space. If tile joints are barely noticeable, and only one color is used, then there is no difference between horizontal and vertical laying. To make the effect more noticeable, the gaps between the fragments are decorated with a special coating.

Vertical

The method is diametrically opposite to horizontal. The wide edges of the rectangular tiles are arranged vertically. Use the method when decorating rooms with low ceilings. Vertical “stripes” of seams will extend the bathroom and visually add a couple of meters in height to it.

Mosaic layout

The mosaic effect on the entire surface of the wall or floor can add an extra load to the visual perception of the room. Its combination with direct, diagonal or horizontal methods looks more organic.A separate fragment on the surface is distinguished under the mosaic, which will play the role of an accent. To depict the panel on the wall, you no longer have to painstakingly collect the picture in pieces. Manufacturers took care of simplifying the task and began to produce special mesh bases that allow you to attach large mosaic modules in one fell swoop. The smaller the fragments of the finishing “puzzle”, the higher the detail of the picture.

Mosaic layout in the bathroom

There is a separate type of mosaic tile. Decorative “seams” are applied to the surface of a single piece.

Chess Stacking

In the classic chess version fragments of black and white are used. You can lay tiles directly and diagonally, depending on the preferences of the bathroom owners. Chess laying is necessarily based on a combination of two different colors. In more complex compositions, a large number of shades are used within the same tone or by the principle of contrast. The layout of fragments is subject to strict rules, and does not allow a chaotic combination. Otherwise, it’s not a chess arrangement, but a creative mess.

Combined method

In addition to the above methods, their combinations are also used. Typically, the combination is made in two ways. The places of “joints” of different layouts are emphasized with contrasting seams. Actually horizontal division of a small room in half with the actual line. To highlight accent areas against the background of simpler layout options, complex methods of labyrinth, mosaic, displacement of seams or modular combinations are used. Often these areas are decorated with tiles of other colors that contrast with a neutral background solution.

Modern Design Concepts

Fashion is in constant motion, static is not peculiar to it, and design, as you know, obeys this capricious lady.In the line of modern styles, ceramic tiles play the role of a luxurious element, rather than a background finish. Laying fragments of non-standard shapes (bee honeycombs, triangles, circles), the use of surfaces imitating the texture of natural materials, and the use of needlework techniques in the composition design are popular. Original drawings made in accordance with the principles of minimalism, abstractionism, surrealism are also in demand. All these options allow not only to emphasize the features of the stylistic decision of the bathroom, but also to make its interior unique.

Ornamental styling

From tiles of small sizes lay out “pixel” compositions or complex ornaments that “stretch” through separate zones. A “kaleidoscope” is considered a similar technique, that is, a combination of different patterns and colors on fragments. Ornament is not advised to design small bathrooms. It looks more effective as a method of zoning in combined rooms.

Patchwork Stacking

Patchwork - a method of stitching large items (blankets, carpets, pillowcases) from small scraps of various fabrics. In the layout of the tiles, this technique is quite common. However, due to excessive variegation, it is not recommended to design the entire wall or floor in this way. In order for the interior to fit seamlessly into the interior, it is used on a separate surface area, which will be an accent element in the room. Combine pieces of different colors, sizes and patterns. In some versions, the “joints” are decorated with imitation of seams from threads.

Honeycomb styling

Honeycombs - cells that make bees from hives from wax, quietly become a popular form that they play in the design of rooms. Tiles (often clinker), imitating hexagons, are used in the decoration of the bathroom and kitchen aprons. Usually fragments of different shades are used to create a composition with a gradation effect. Originally look options with the transition from wall to floor. For example, the horizontal surface is decorated with blue and white tiles, and the vertical - black, in which there are pieces that have fallen from above. Also, repeating compositions and patterns are created from the honeycombs, but preference is given to the chaotic arrangement of hexagons.

Imitation of parquet and solid board

Laminate and parquet board are not used in the bathroom. This "delicate" flooring in harsh conditions will not last long. In some cases, the interior concept requires the use of wood only. It’s easy to find a way out: purchase tiles in the form of tiles with a surface imitating a wood pattern. The coating is much stronger, it will not be afraid of moisture and aggressive detergents. The range of colors allows you to choose an imitation of any tree species: from expensive rattan to the usual pine.

How to draw a layout diagram

Many people think that creating a styling project is a matter of minutes. To assess the scope of work, it is enough to pick up a pencil and get lost, not knowing where to start. It is necessary to draw a plan of the room on a blank sheet of paper, the higher its detail, the easier it will be to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the decoration project. Then they sign the measurements, which are preliminarily made using roulette. Finish the plumbing arrangement. Further, the walls or floor are divided into several straight lines horizontally, vertically or diagonally, depending on the future layout. They evaluate which sector division looks more organically and erase excess lines. Then they finish the “grid” of tiles on the surfaces. The resulting squares or rectangles are filled with individual colors or draw an approximate ornament.

How to calculate the number of tiles

First, measure the width and length (height) of the wall or floor, which will be faced. Values are multiplied by each other to get the area. If there are “closed” areas (windows or places for finishing with other materials), they are also measured. Then unnecessary meters are subtracted from the total area. It is necessary in advance to find out the length and width of the tile to be used in the decoration. By multiplying these values, its area is also calculated. Keep in mind that the joint error is not taken into account in the calculations. Then the area of the entire room is divided by the same value of one tile fragment. Thus, the approximate number of tiles that will be needed for surface finishing is obtained. Do not forget to make a small margin within 5% of the resulting value. If fragments of different sizes are used, then the future composition is conditionally divided into equal sectors and their number is calculated. For example, in modular laying, two rectangles and one square form a fragment with equal sides. Its area is also used as a unit of decoration. In the presence of small inserts, their number usually corresponds to the number of the main tile and is also taken with a margin.

Conclusion

Decorating a bathroom with a tile has long turned into a creative process. "Boring" monophonic tiles are used less and less, and designers prefer non-standard options that emphasize the strengths of the interior and themselves become part of the art composition within the room. The main objective of the material is expressed in protecting the surface from the effects of the microclimate of the bathroom and giving the building an aesthetic appearance. The strength of tiles is not inferior to brick and wood, and a rich assortment allows you to choose the option in accordance with the individual needs of the person.
