Modern elements and interior decoration items

Interior Decor Elements

In ancient times, architecture began with the construction of dwellings, then people began to erect monuments and symbolic structures in honor of the rulers and deities in whom they believed. Naturally, these monumental buildings were decorated whenever possible. To learn how to create more elegant elements, crafts began to be mastered. The latter served as an impetus for the emergence of artistic values and the emergence of a person's craving for the "beautiful." Primitive houses were equipped not only with the necessary minimum of items for a comfortable life, but also with things that did not have a specific purpose. They featured solely as a beautiful addition. These elements were later called “decor”, which in Latin sounds like “decent”, “decent”. In the richer houses, they didn’t save on interior decoration, the poor were content with the small, but even managed to revive their shacks with the help of improvised means. Nowadays, decoration elements belong to the components of the interior decoration of the premises along with the furniture.Together with the decoration of the walls, ceiling and floor, they create a unique design picture. Each style is characterized by the use of certain types of decorative elements.

The role of decor items

The decor in the interior picture allows you to add colors, accents and give the decoration of the room a complete look. Lovely little things that do not carry any functional load create cosiness in the room and give it a touch of “warmth”. If you leave only decoration and furniture in the room, then it will become comfortable, but not the fact that it will be pleasant to be in it. Pay attention to offices in offices, hospital wards and other government premises. They look sterile, it immediately becomes clear that people do not live here. Because the functional minimum contributes only to the workflow, and a person is used to surrounding himself with beauty, with little things that become part of his life. At the same time, any designer knows that decor can be given both a leading and a secondary role. In the first case, the items are combined into a complex composition that looks spectacular against a neutral background of decoration and the rest of the decoration. If the decor is secondary, then it only sets off the overall stylistic concept, becomes an inconspicuous addition.

Decor in the interior

The concept of “decoration” reflects the main purpose of decorations in the room. The design is used in theatrical productions in order to transfer the action to the necessary conditions and visualize the background environment.

Variety of decorative items

Decor in the broad sense of the word is classified according to the set of characteristic features into three types:

ArchitecturalUsually it is part of the interior decoration.
SculpturalThe concept includes a wide range of products: from statuettes to clay and plaster compositions.
PicturesqueThe main representatives of the group are paintings.

Interior with decorative elements.

There are also “interspecific” combinations. For example, a relief (not a characteristic, but a branch of art) combines sculptural and pictorial types: they create volumetric compositions on an even plane. There is also another classification according to the degree of “activity” of decorative objects:

  • Passive. It is involved only if necessary to decorate the room.
  • Active. They are an integral part of the architectural design and perform specific functions.

Also, decorative objects are divided into those that are purchased in stores, and made by hand. The latter are closely related to the process of creativity and needlework. The gizmos resulting from handmade are valued much higher, as they are exclusive details that will make the interior unique. You can choose decorative elements for a city apartment or a private house yourself or turn to specialists for help. The latter is relevant for complex stylistic decisions in luxury apartments, when the environment should fully comply with the concept of the chosen direction. By location, objects are classified into four groups:

  • Board. Lamps, figurines, watches.
  • Floor standing. Large vases, lamps.
  • Wall mounted. Watches, paintings, sconces, mirrors.
  • Ceiling. As a rule, we are talking about chandeliers, although in experimental interiors there are cases of placing images above the head.

Mirrors of different sizes in the living room

According to the materials of execution, objects are divided into:

  • Wooden. They are made from any breed, often with carving elements.
  • Stone.Water, as you know, sharpens a stone, but for a person this task is many times more difficult. For this reason, products made of natural stone, as a rule, are highly valued due to the complexity of the creation process.
  • Metal. Casting and forging - these are the main ways to create such gizmos.
  • Ceramics. Elegant and neat items that often repeat national motifs. It is enough to recall Chinese or Russian porcelain.
  • Gypsum. It is an affordable material for creating sculptures.
  • Glass. From it, individual elements or stained glass mosaics are made.
  • Polyfoam, polyurethane, cardboard, plywood, paper. Used to create inexpensive compositions, because of the affordable cost of materials.
  • Textile. This broad category includes many elements: from interior dolls to curtains on windows.

Figurine on a table

Decoration is always thoroughly saturated with stylistic motives. Each design direction has specific elements. For example, the refined decor of the classic style will look out of place in a room decorated in Provence. Elegant and stylish gizmos used in the loft are absolutely not suitable for practical shabby chic.

Conventional norms on the permissible number of decorative elements are superimposed on premises of a certain type. There should be less of them in the kitchen, corridor and in the bathroom, moderate use is allowed in the bedroom, but the living room can be full of decorations that will not spoil it at all. Also, the decor can be universal or narrowly targeted, only for rooms of a certain type. For example, a fireplace belongs to the first category, and curly jars for storing spices - to the second.

Stone and marble in the interior

Stone and marble are used as decorative decoration and serve as material for independent products. In the wall cladding, it is used to embody expensive styles with a claim to luxury. Moreover, in most cases a cheaper imitation is used, which cannot be visually distinguished from the original. Polished marble is a universal material, it is made of countertops, sinks, figurines, caskets, coasters, bowls, tableware, “legs” of lamps and even a vase. The stone brings a touch of naturalness into the interior, which is why it is popular in an “ecologically friendly” environment.

Decor elements with motifs of waves.

Contrary to misconceptions, such gizmos are used not only for decorating rooms in a marine style. For "wavy" lines, the introduction of dynamics into space is characteristic. They are able to revive too boring or serious interiors and at the same time adjust to a calm mood, help to relax. Perhaps in this case, the effect of a soothing "wiggle" on the waves. Similar motifs are more common in textiles: curtains, rugs, pillows, upholstery, bedspreads. Slightly less often the "wavy" theme is found in paintings and shapes of vases, decorative bottles, watches. Similar lines in blue, blue and green shades are traditionally made out.

“Let the wave go” even on the laminate flooring, if you competently combine this coating with ceramic tiles. The boundary of the combination should have a characteristic shape.

Interior items in the style of the Italian Renaissance.

In recent years, there has been a triumphant return of Renaissance motifs to interiors. For objects characterized by a touch of Italian luxury and grace. Of course, decorative elements do not look modern, but they dynamically adapt to mixed styles, effectively shading their originality. Vases, partially exposed sculptures, columns, dishes, stucco molding, specific plant ornaments on surfaces and thematic images of laurel wreaths are borrowed from the Renaissance.

Original decor elements in the form of hands and gestures

Sculptures depicting hands in characteristic gestures are perhaps the most non-trivial decoration of the interior of recent years. Similar art objects are attributed to late abstractionism. Modern masters draw inspiration from the heritage of Auguste Rodin. The French sculptor attached special importance to his hands. He often exaggerated their size, creating huge compositions from interwoven fingers. The most famous master’s creation in a similar style is “Hands of the Creator”, decorating the author’s museum in Paris. Decor elements that capture various gestures are classified as laconic options that people choose original, not afraid of experiments.

Bright vases and interior accessories

Decor elements made in bright colors play the role of accents in the room. With the help of such color spots, designers draw the attention of guests to specific areas of the room. Items can perform two functions:

  • Distract attention from shortcomings;
  • Conditionally show where the "best sides" of the interior are.

In an environment where neutral colors prevail, they do not save on bright vases, bowls, stand, clocks, lamps. In a motley decoration they are used to a minimum so as not to load space.

Interior items with animals

The smaller brothers in paintings, figurines, images on textile surfaces always attract attention and show that the owners have a good sense of humor. Dogs, cats, rabbits and other cute domestic animals are suitable for mischievous and whimsical styles. Snakes, running horses, wolves, foxes, leopards harmoniously flow into the strict interiors. Any predators that are the embodiment of strength and danger, emphasize the seriousness of the situation.

Clock and paintings

As for the paintings, these decorative elements open up a lot of opportunities for the designer. From time to time, the whole perception of the decorated area depends on their location, model of the frame and image. When placing paintings, the “57 inches” rule should be taken into account: an art object is placed at eye level about 150 cm from the floor. Its center should fall on a conditional line, only in this way a person will be able to consider the image in detail. Recently, collages have come into fashion, which are made out of several paintings (starting from three) in various combinations. The dimensions of the individual parts of the composition can vary from tiny to large. The accent walls in the room are decorated with collages, and their characters can be completely different: images of people, flowers, city panoramas, still lifes, landscapes. The watch has long ceased to be used only for its intended purpose. Nowadays, such bizarre lines of form and materials of execution are relevant that at first glance it is difficult to guess what exactly is in front of you. Watches can be wall, floor and table. There are original models embedded in countertops, which are part of the collage on the walls, "flowing down" from the window sills (a surreal business card of Salvador Dali), with "sectors" filled with bulk materials of different colors and fractions. The watch variety allows you to choose a unique option that will suit a specific interior.

Mirrors in the original version

Mirrors, too, at one time fell under the "sights" of tenacious designer eyes, and began to embody their most unusual fantasies. In eco-style, frames from real branches or parts of tree trunks are used. In minimalism and hi-tech, the mirror surfaces themselves are original: voluminous, convex, consisting of many faces. For those who want to stand out, compositions from "cracked" pieces that are attached in a chaotic mess to the wall are suitable. In this technique, “honeycombs” are created: combinations of pieces of the same shape (hexagons) and sizes. A mirror can be part of an artistic composition, its volumetric element. For example, the wall is decorated with a huge image of the head of a dandelion or “dill” umbrella, and the “parachutes” in it are made of reflecting pieces, round in shape. Mirror surfaces are used for finishing kitchen aprons, walls in the living room and furniture facades.

Candlesticks and lamps

Lamps and candlesticks are primarily considered as a functional unit. They compensate for the lack of natural light, and only then are perceived as an art object in the interior. Lamps are used everywhere. They are put on the floor, on tables and hung on the walls. In recent years, spot lights have become very popular, which creates an atmosphere of luxury in the room. A “branch” of bare bulbs entwined around the frame of a mirror or doorway is a stylish addition to modern design. The variety of forms, shades, materials of execution, allows you to complete any design, emphasizing its merits. Lamps are acquired last, they are akin to the final touches on the canvas, which correct the resulting picture. Candlesticks are used less often, as they are mistakenly associated exclusively with antiquity. Fashion trends did not pass them by, and allowed us to look at a familiar object from a different angle. Their “legs” are made of wood, metal, glass and even stone.

DIY decor items

To decorate the room with items of their own manufacture, resort to the technique of decoupage, painting, beadwork, embroidery, knitting, patchwork, scrapbooking. The number of ways to create original art objects is huge, and everyone can find a hobby to their liking. If you have never tried yourself in such a thing, then on the World Wide Web you can easily find the necessary master classes with a detailed description of each stage of the work. For a hobby, they use threads, ribbons, pieces of fabric, colored paper, accessories, wire and other improvised means, with the help of which familiar objects change beyond recognition or fundamentally new little things are created. Making a decorative element with your own hands, it is easy to feel like a creator of home decoration.

How to choose interior decoration items

When decorating the interior, they focus on two important aspects:

  • Stylistic solution;
  • Room features.

Wood decor in the interior

Styles with a bias towards minimalism have a couple of items for decoration, and in classic directions, decor is usually not stingy. In the minds of modern people, the concept of luxury has changed dramatically and has become associated with simple details. They emphasize the elegance of decoration with the help of unusual shapes, expensive materials, "fashionable" colors, and not due to their quantity. It is also worth considering the size of the room. In small rooms, it is not recommended to use an abundance of little things that “load” the cramped space. Large decorative objects are suitable for the same premises, only in such cases they will not look "lonely" and inappropriate.

Conclusion

The decor is called the "soul" of the room. If the furniture is purchased typical, found in other apartments, albeit in different combinations, then the aesthetic preferences of the owner are manifested in the details. Decorative objects make the interior lively, “warm” and cozy. Their combinations are always unique, which allows us to talk about the author's design.

I love needlework and everything connected with it. Especially home-made furnishings are my passion!
