How to choose a picture for the interior

Pictures in the interior

At first glance, the paintings are just another decoration of the interior, which does not play any special role in the decor. But with the help of a well-chosen image, you can change a lot: smooth the excessive angularity of the furniture, mask the defects of the wall, highlight the accent area that attracts attention, emphasize the stylistic concept, revitalize the design or, conversely, make it stricter and more solid. Perspective paintings enlarge the space, make it deeper. The color scheme of the interior creates the mood of the room, and the images within the framework correct it, add light notes and halftones. Let's try to figure out how to choose the right picture for the interior and where to place it in the room.

Criteria for choosing paintings

It is necessary to choose paintings taking into account their main characteristics:

  • The size. The length and width of the image are of great importance in the visual perception of the space of the room.
  • Color palette. A picture can become a living, accent element in the interior or, conversely, precipitate an overly bright environment.
  • Plot. One of the most important characteristics. You need to select paintings so that their content meets the aesthetic needs of the owners of the house, but at the same time supports the stylistic decision to design the room.
  • The form. Square, round, oval or rectangular frames create a special geometry that either emphasizes the smoothness of lines in the setting, or smooths out complex configurations and overall angularity.

The compatibility of the painting with the finishing material of the wall on which it will be located is also taken into account. The frame is a separate story. Depending on the material, color, texture and secondary decor, it can turn into a luxurious addition that even slightly eclipses the image, or become a pale shadow of a picture that only draws its borders.

To size

The size of the picture is aligned with the dimensions of the object, which is located below. If a bed, table, sofa or other large element is attached to the wall, then the image should have a width corresponding to at least half the length of the furniture. Otherwise, the picture will look lonely and inappropriate. The rest of the wall is finally “crushed” by a small decor. An exception to the rule will be only modular images, since when calculating their width, the distance between the components is not taken into account. Therefore, diptychs and triptychs can refer to the length of the furniture in a 2: 3 ratio. The height of the picture also matters. If the room has low ceilings, then use vertical images that stretch the space.

A medium-sized picture (approximately 1 m in height) should be located at a distance of 2 m from the intended point of view. If the canvas is closer, then the contemplative intuitively wants to step back a couple of steps to appreciate the charm of the plot. Accordingly, the distance should be equal to the double height of the picture.

By color scheme

The selection of shades is carried out in accordance with the color composition of the room. First you need to decide what role the designer assigns to this decor. If the picture becomes an accent, then its plot should be made in bright colors that will contrast with the decor. For example, in a blue and white room design, an image in yellow or red tones will stand out. When a picture should merge with the interior, support the color concept, then its colors are selected according to the principle of analogy. For example, in a brown-beige design with notes of whiteness, canvases made in walnut, sand, pale yellow tones with gold are used. The ideal plot would be the setting sun over a clear water ripple or an autumn landscape.

According to the plot

The plot should match the functionality of the room. Appetizing, “tasty” still lifes or images of gastronomic delights are suitable for the kitchen: fragrant dishes with a crispy crust and smoking smoke, juicy fruits, fresh vegetables with droplets of moisture on the peel, juices in misted jugs, sweet berries in wicker baskets with checkered napkins as a substrate . For the bedroom, they choose soft, calm compositions that are associated with pacification and relaxation: forest edges, reeds off the river banks, sea landscapes, starry sky above a sleepy city. Alternatively, you can use reproductions of paintings by famous artists: Savrasov, Shishkin, Levitan. Do not confuse calm stories with sadly dreary ones. The atmosphere in the living room is completely different.Companies and family members gather here, rest, as a rule, involves active games, watching TV, noisy gatherings. The atmosphere of the hall is energetic, therefore, the picture for it should have special dynamics. Suitable city panoramas, images of the water element in all its glory, adventure stories. For the hallway, neutral canvases are selected to help guests form a true opinion about the owners of the apartment. Do not get involved in surrealism or abstraction. Among the subjects, preference is given to portraits, floral arrangements, still lifes or natural landscapes. Since the hallway is the face of the apartment, avoid paintings that carry a negative charge, with scenes of violence, death, destruction or disasters.

In the stylistic direction

Painting has many trends, most of which gave rise to design trends. For interior classics, paintings made in the same style, romanticism, realism, empire, academism, sentimentalism, symbolism, aesthetics are suitable. This can be reproductions of famous paintings exhibited in museums and which have become part of the cultural heritage, or original works of unknown artists. For minimalism, high-tech, modern trends, avant-garde, surrealism, chinoiserie, underground, cubism, impressionism, expressionism paintings are suitable. Art nouveau or anachronism, neoclassicism paintings are selected for Art Nouveau. For art deco and pop art, plots made in the same style of painting are suitable. Provence combines images written according to the principles of Biedermeier. For eclecticism or fusion, canvases in the style of art brut, rayism are chosen. Futurism is combined with paintings that relate to fantasy and cosmism. Loft prefers street art, kitsch, hyperrealism.

Picture Framing

The frame is selected first of all to the picture itself. Its compatibility with the interior goes by the wayside.A frame is the clothes of a canvas in which it can look good or completely ridiculous. Traditionally, the frame is made of baguette. This is a classic version of a relief frame. Framing is divided into three types: flat, beveled in / out. It can have a different color, shape and additional decor. Gilded frames with numerous curls or carvings are suitable for classic canvases. For modern paintings choose glass and metal frames. Alternatively, the image can generally be hung "without anything." By the aforementioned analogy, the picture will be “naked”, which is suitable only for bold interiors.

The only exceptions are diptychs, polyptychs and triptychs. The modularity of the paintings does not require a frame, which in this case will be an extra element that distracts attention.

How to hang pictures

Each interior element should be in its place, only in this case the situation will look complete. This rule applies to paintings. In the bedroom, linen is better to hang over the bed. If there is no TV in the room and the opposite wall is empty, then a pair of canvas is placed on it. In the hallway, paintings are placed on both sides of the mirror or along the corridor on an empty surface. In the living room, the wall with a sofa is considered the best option. In the children's room, paintings find a place in the corner for games or above the bed.

Consider also the decoration of the wall on which the picture will be hung. For example, contrasting striped wallpaper combined with a bright canvas that breaks the overall ideality of the geometry.

Modular pictures

Modular paintings, depending on the number of components, are classified into diptychs, triptychs, polyptychs. The practice of dividing the image into segments appeared in the Middle Ages, but in the interior a similar solution began to be applied relatively recently. In the classic version, the central canvas is the largest, and the size of the side is 1/2 or 1/3 of the main part of the composition. The whole pictorial group is more like a window with shutters. Modular paintings of this format are still used in the design of altars in churches and temples. The main rule for creating triptychs and diptychs is a common theme in segments, that is, they do not have to be a continuation of each other.

And in the interiors use the technique of "cutting" one image into many parts. Modular paintings will become an accent no matter what plot is depicted on them. In this case, the role is played by an unusual form of image supply, a segmented structure. You can arrange parts of the picture sequentially horizontally or vertically. Complex compositions, which consist of four or more segments, can “add up” into a single whole according to more complicated schemes. Popular themes for modular paintings were flowers, trees, city panoramas.

How to compose

When composing the composition, pay attention to the size of the decorated wall. This is important to get the right ratio. According to the “golden section” rule, the size of a group of paintings should relate to the background in a 3: 1 ratio. The canvases can be arranged according to various schemes: linearly, parallelly, with a circle, a rhombus, a triangle, a rectangle, an asymmetric group. If you use images of the same size, it is best to hang them in a line at an equal distance from each other. For the composition of different-sized paintings, it is worth choosing the group principle, when a large canvas is placed in the center of the composition at eye level, and those smaller ones frame it. An unusual solution will be the linear arrangement of images from the largest to the smallest. Asymmetric compositions that occupy two adjacent walls and a corner look beautiful. If the surfaces are painted in different colors, then you can play in contrast. For example, paintings on the yellow wall are in blue frames, and on the azure - in the frame of a sunny shade or with gilding.

Conclusion

Sometimes finding the right picture is very difficult. Painting, as you know, not only “stops time”, but also gives the image a soul. If the spiritual component of the picture does not find a response in a person, then the canvas has not yet found its owner. The rules for selecting images for the interior must be taken into account, but the aesthetics of the canvas should first of all correspond to the tastes of the buyer. If the picture fits the interior perfectly, but the owner does not like something, the desired aura in the room will not be formed.
