Patchwork in the interior

Patchwork - a technique for stitching scattered rags into single canvases. Finished products are most often called quilts. From shreds, you can create blankets, pillowcases, potholders, towels, carpets, walkways and even details of clothing. Patchwork in the interior is used everywhere, since it’s easy to work with this technique even for beginners, and textile waste can be found in any home. Finished products may differ in motley or restraint, depending on the selection of components in color and texture. Literally from English "patchwork" is translated as "product from rags". Craftswomen most often work with cotton fabrics. The material is inexpensive, easy to cut and stitch, and it also lasts quite a while. Cut out patches according to patterns of different geometric shapes. Then they are carefully stitched together according to the mosaic principle, as if they were assembling a single picture from separate puzzles. In the interior, such a masterpiece of needlework will look unusual and very cozy. Let's talk about where and when the patchwork appeared, with what directions in design it is combined best and with what decorations from shreds (not necessarily textile) you can revive the atmosphere of different rooms.

Appearance story

Unfortunately, the fabrics are short-lived, which greatly complicates the study of the history of the origin of the original technique, called “patchwork”. You can definitely say that patchwork appeared in different countries in parallel, since any seamstress always has waste. It’s a pity to throw out pieces, but they are no longer suitable for some full-fledged thing. So they came up with an unusual method that avoids the disposal of tissue waste, adapting it in a completely different way. One of the most ancient finds, which is directly related to patchwork, is stored in the Cairo Museum of Antiquities. This is a small blanket that is decorated with ornaments from individual pieces of antelope skin. In Africa and Asia, cloths sewn from shreds are still decorated with thematic patterns. In China, the floor of one of the holy caves is covered with a carpet, which was collected from pieces of clothing of pilgrims. On the way to this very place they left them on bushes and low branches of trees. According to the generally accepted opinion, the Crusaders brought quilts to the Old World. They often returned from campaigns not empty-handed, but with gizmos unusual for these places.

In America, patchwork began to be practiced for reasons of economy. The need for a “new life for old things” arose before the settlers, most of whose savings went to pay for the sea voyage. In a young country, a tradition arose among the female half: they gathered in the evenings in large groups and by candlelight combined the pleasant with the useful (sewed and talked). In Russia, the word "patchwork", of course, did not occur, but patchwork has become widespread. From multi-colored pieces were made dunders and sackcloths, which decorated the simple interiors of the hut. The latter are still found in the Russian style: they are dense paths woven from numerous long strips of fabric. Fleece blankets were called blasphemers, again based on shreds sewn together. By the middle of the last century, the patchwork was slightly forgotten. With the advent of fashion, handmade patchwork has become popular again. As mentioned earlier, the technique is quite simple, so even without tailoring talents, you can make a blanket or pillowcase yourself.

Patchwork in interior design

The patchwork is closely related to the application. The technologies are much alike. The only difference is that the applications collected from different pieces are sewn to the base.

Style Interaction

Although at first glance it might seem that the patchwork is the destiny of exclusively rural areas, in reality this is not so. Variegated blankets, rugs and pillowcases really decorate rooms decorated in a country style (Provence, Russian). In ethnic interiors, they are found a little less. Nevertheless, depending on the type and color of the fabrics from which the textile decor is sewn, it can become a luxurious decoration of minimalism, modern, Scandinavian, colonial style, shabby chic, art deco and, in rare cases, even classics. Products made of shreds decorate not only furniture and the floor, but even the walls. From pieces of fabric, combining the patchwork technique with the application, you can create a beautiful panel. Combining different fragments of wallpaper, the pattern and texture of which is different, create original wall paintings.

Textile patchwork and its styles and techniques

The patchwork is classified into separate styles, closely related to those countries where they are most often practiced:

  • Oriental. Usually stitch fragments of the same shape and size, but motley colors. The style is characterized by the use of original additional decorations: sequins, large beads, beads, tassels and fringes.

East patchwork

  • Japanese. In fact, this is just an offshoot of the Oriental style, which is characterized by the use of silk instead of cotton fabrics. The flaps are decorated with themed floral designs, and the items are decorated with sashiko stitches, traditional for Japanese needlewomen.

Japanese

  • English. In this style, squares of the same size are sewn. Usually pick up patches with a discreet pattern within two similar colors. Finished products look concise and neat.

English

  • Crazy patchwork. Truly crazy style, which combines shreds of various shapes, sizes and colors. Jewelry can also be different: ribbons, beads, buttons, ruffles, beads, sequins.

Crazy

Separately, it is worth noting a knitted patchwork in which the craftswomen use knitting needles or a crochet. First, squares are made of yarn of different colors, and then they are sewn. The patchwork is classified into the following techniques:

  • Squares. The most simple option to execute. The patches are square in shape and are either cut or sewn from strips (usually three or four).

Square patchwork

  • The triangles. The pattern is already an order of magnitude more complicated. As a rule, the patches are in the form of isosceles triangles, which gather in large squares.

Triangles

  • Stripes. They can be located parallel to each other, concentrated around a square fragment in the center of the product or simulate “brickwork”, that is, each flap in the adjacent row is placed with a shift.

Stripes

  • Honeycombs. The product is assembled from hexagons. Externally, the canvas resembles a honeycomb.

  • Lyapochikha. Russian technology, which allows you to get a fleecy, slightly rough-looking product.Shreds or cloths are chosen from fabric with protruding threads or pile, which leads to general untidiness. They are sewn onto the base fabric in such a way that both ends hang loose. So get bulk products.

  • In a checkerboard pattern. This technique uses square fragments of the same size, but contrasting in color. Arrange them like cells on a chessboard.

Staggered

There is another technique that can safely be considered the most difficult. The watercolor technique involves the creation of a full-fledged picture of shreds of the same shape and size, but different in color. Shades will have to be selected very carefully to get a slightly “blurry” picture, which is typical for images created using this type of paint.

Patchwork tile

Patchwork in the broad sense of the word implies not only work with textiles. The technique of combining shreds from something affected even finishing materials. Tile manufacturers began to produce special sets, where each piece is decorated with a unique pattern. You can spend a little more time and pick up such a "mosaic" yourself. Tiles are laid out on the floor, the walls of the bathtub or on the kitchen apron, which will certainly become the highlight of the interior of this room.

Wallpaper patchwork

Instead of boring decisions, the walls can be decorated with a hand-made coating, assembled from pieces of wallpaper or fabric. In the first case, it is enough to save the remnants of materials from the last repair, and ask for unnecessary pieces from friends. Wallpaper is cut into fragments, selected according to the principles of compatibility and alternately glued to the wall. The fabric is sewn from the fabric and fixed to the surface with carnations or staples. It is worth considering that the textile collects dust and absorbs odors, so the decor will have to be removed regularly for washing.

Patchwork Carpets

Carpets and walkways are sewn from shreds of strong and durable materials. For these purposes, traditional cotton fabrics or delicate silk are not suitable. As a rule, they use genuine leather, jeans, or fragments of old, worn carpets, which the car in the form of baldness has bypassed. Although in a rustic style, pieces with characteristic “bald spots” will also look good. Carpets can not only be sewn, but also knitted. It is not recommended to use such delicate products in the kitchen and in the hallway, since there they will inevitably undergo rapid wear. The “sack” paths are sewn from shreds of even thin fabrics, since the strips are carefully rolled up and “crushed”, being fixed in this position by stitches.

Examples of application in rooms

Products made using the patchwork technique can decorate the entire apartment. Such accents will link individual rooms into a single interior composition. The living room, bedroom and nursery use mainly patchwork-style textile decor. For the kitchen, combined options are selected from fabric and tile, and only ceramic tiles are used in the bathroom.

In the living room

In the living room using patchwork technique accent areas. Mostly patchwork elements decorate the furniture group for relaxing: decorate chairs with wraps and covers, cover the sofa with a plaid, cover them with pillows in pillowcases made by themselves, cover the floor with a rug. Although in this room the emphasis can be placed on curtains or a wall on which a "watercolor" picture or an abstract canvas assembled from geometric shapes of different sizes will hang. If there is a fireplace in the living room, then its boring finish can be replaced with colorful tiles laid out in the style of patchwork.

In the kitchen

For the kitchen, textile ornaments and ceramics in the style of patchwork are chosen. To make the atmosphere cute and comfortable, the room is decorated with patchwork curtains, tablecloths, tacks, hot coasters or towels. If a dining area is also attached to the cooking area, then it can be decorated by covering the floor with a rug repeating the contours of the table. The luminaire or chandelier cover is also covered with a cloth made in patchwork technique. Ceramic fragments of different textures and colors adorn the floor, walls and kitchen apron. A stylish and unusual solution will be the design of "patches" of the surface of the working area or countertops on the bar counter.

In the nursery

In the children's room, a patchwork quilt or rug will add special comfort. In the room for girls, the emphasis is on the delicate shades of pink, peach, mint, coral. In the room for boys, they use pieces of blue, gray, green colors. Solid patches usually alternate with fragments on which drawings are depicted: animals, cars, fairy-tale characters, scenes from children's fairy tales. For the little needlewoman, the patchwork will provide a great chance to master a new technique, creating the decor of her room with her parents.

In the bedroom

The patchwork on the wall at the head of the bed will look stylish in the bedroom. The bed itself is also decorated with a bedspread and pillows, assembled from pieces. On the floor on both sides of the bed you can lay on a makeshift soft rug. In coloring, it is recommended to adhere to delicate combinations with notes of romance: pink, lilac, blue, green, blue tones. The original option will be patchwork shades for paired fixtures, which are placed either directly on the floor or on bedside tables. If the bedroom is spacious or combined with another area, then you can separate it with the help of a screen in which the textile is pulled on a metal or wooden frame.

Conclusion

The patchwork will be an excellent decoration not only for the unobtrusive and laconic interior of a summer house or country house, but also for the solid atmosphere of a city apartment. Patchwork technology has long ceased to be part of exclusively rural styles. In recent years, the patchwork has become so popular among professional designers that its features began to be traced in many designer collections of furniture and textiles for interior decoration. The technique is quite simple and does not require such perseverance, such as embroidery or work with beads. If there are not enough shreds to create a rug or a bedspread, then it’s worth iterating through old things, where there may be completely worthless options, which are not a pity to put under the scissors.

I love needlework and everything connected with it. Especially home-made furnishings are my passion!
