How to glue wallpaper in the corners: gluing the outer and inner corners, docking

Decorating your home with paper wallpaper is far from a new word in construction and architectural design. Due to the fact that this material is supplied ready-made, inexperienced customers mistakenly believe that the procedure for gluing them does not contain any “pitfalls”. However, for beginners, the process of applying paper rolls to ceilings and walls is fraught with many unfamiliar difficulties. One of them is the problem of how to stick wallpaper in the corners and at the joints of different surfaces, so that they reliably grasp and maintain a presentable appearance. Due to the fact that the geometry of the room may differ from the standard square room with right angles, its lining will require compliance with the relevant rules and techniques.

What angle to glue

For the first time, taking up an independent pasting of an apartment, you can get confused already at the first steps, when in front of you is only a bare wall. Beginners are wondering which side to put the first roll on correctly and whether the direction in which you move during the gluing plays a role. Experienced users confirm that first of all you need to complete the wallpapering of the ceiling, if you do not intend to finish it with another method. Having finished with the most inaccessible surface, it will be easier for you to concentrate on the adjacent walls, without worrying that you accidentally touch fresh wallpaper. At the same time, both the ceiling and the walls require individual approaches to the selection of areas and directions for the start of gluing. Wrong decisions at this stage will seriously complicate further finishing work, especially if you do not have experience. The recommendations for solving this issue with your own hands are as follows:

  • On the wall. When it comes to overlapping gluing, the only right choice is to apply the first strip at the window. This is done so that in the light of the sun no seams are visible between them. In the case of gluing the wallpaper end-to-end, in addition to the window, starting positions at the door frames and corners are allowed. Also consider if the design of your cladding includes drawings or complex ornaments that should match those on adjacent stripes.
  • To the ceiling. With this surface, the problem is solved easier, because all experts unanimously indicate the need to stick the first roll strictly in the center of the ceiling. Thus, it will be possible to fit the remaining paintings so that they symmetrically go to the walls on either side of the central one.

Features of wallpapering from different materials

In addition to the location of the main strip, the material underlying your wallpaper makes its own changes to the room gluing procedure. If in the past paper rolls were the only such facing products, then the modern assortment of construction stores is noticeably richer. Several varieties of wallpaper appeared on sale, the differences between which are not only in appearance, but also in technical characteristics. This is reflected in the technology of gluing them:

  • Paper. This material provides the products with a minimum thickness, which requires them to be glued to the surface immediately after treatment with the adhesive composition. Otherwise, the canvases may have time to get wet, which will affect their appearance and structural integrity.
  • Vinyl. Moisture-resistant analogues are available with a relief surface, which gives them aesthetic properties and masks wall irregularities. Before gluing, glue should be applied to both the rolls of wallpaper and the surface to be glued, and then let them dry - wallpaper 10 minutes, walls 15 minutes.
  • Cullets. They got their name due to their high strength and the use of reinforcing components in the composition at the manufacturing stage. This provided the glass wallpaper with a high weight, which requires the selection of a special adhesive mixture with its preliminary application to the wall.
  • Photowall-paper. Due to their appearance, they require careful planning before gluing. For fragments of the photo on different stripes to look harmoniously on the wall, the latter needs preliminary marking. The rolls of photo wallpaper themselves need to be laid out in front of themselves in the correct sequence so as not to confuse the stripes.
  • Non-woven. Moisture-resistant products with mineral fibers in the structure and an adhesive mixture on the inside, which does not require its processing with an adhesive composition. It is enough to apply the latter on a wall or ceiling, leaving to dry for 15 minutes before applying the main strip.
  • Fabric.These expensive fabrics, similarly to glass ones, require the use of special glue used together with fabric materials. The mixture is applied to the inside of the wallpaper and absorbed for five minutes. Sticking the fabric rolls themselves involves not only laying them on the surface, but also passing through them with a soft roller wrapped in a rag or towel. Beware of wrinkling, which often occurs in such wallpaper due to the softness of the material.

Gluing process

Necessary materials and tools

Before starting work on wallpapering, make sure that you have at hand all the necessary equipment. Mandatory tools include:

  • Clamping spatula;
  • Synthetic fiber roller;
  • Roller for wallpaper seams, standard or conical (for vinyl paintings);
  • Stationery scissors for cutting wallpaper;
  • Knife with a breakable blade;
  • Plumb line;
  • Wallpaper brush;
  • Paint spatula;
  • Paint bath for the preparation of the adhesive mixture;
  • Glue stick;
  • Measuring device - tape measure, clerical or folding ruler.

How to properly prepare the corner for pasting

At the stage of preparatory work, the corner, like the rest of the surface, must be cleaned of dirt, dust and the remnants of the past finishing layer. The latter is removed entirely with a scraper, including old wallpaper, traces of whitewash, plaster or a coat of paint. If there are irregularities in the corner, such as chips, pits or cracks, surface treatment is required to smooth it. For this, primer mixtures are used, which are evenly applied over its entire area to ensure high-quality adhesion with future wallpapers. In the process, professional tools will be required in the form of an appropriate paint roller and primer brush in order to get to hard to reach narrow areas. After finishing the surface treatment, it is necessary to allow the primer to dry, which will require 1 to 12 hours, depending on the brand of the mixture used. The latter can be clarified by reading the instructions from the manufacturer on the packaging composition.

Step-by-step instructions for wallpapering in the corners

Inside corner

Depending on the type of wallpaper chosen, a preliminary application of glue to the surface of the adjacent walls may be required. This can be done with a synthetic roller, lubricating it with glue mixture from the paint bath and “walking” it over all surfaces that will be glued. In the deepest corners where the roller cannot reach, use a brush and carefully lubricate everything with glue. Try not to apply too large a volume of the mixture to prevent the formation of smudges, which can cause bubbles to appear under thin rolls of wallpaper. Make sure that in all areas there is a uniform layer of adhesive.

Inside corner

If you use canvases that do not need to be treated with an adhesive composition of the wall surface, skip this step and proceed to the cladding.

For a harmonious application of wallpaper in the inner corners, experts recommend resorting to the method of cutting the roll to the desired thickness. The problem is that it can be applied with a strip that will cover the entire corner and enter no more than 50 mm on an adjacent wall. To prevent this from being seen in the future, the strip of wallpaper on the adjacent wall must be glued with an overlap and the seam formed by it should be closed. If you notice that two layers of wallpaper do not fit in any way, it is worth using a different method. Using a knife with a breaking blade, make a straight vertical cut along the perimeter of the angle so that it evenly passes through both layers of the canvas. So that the cutting line does not move, you can press the strip level, rule or a strong ruler, along which it is convenient to lead the knife blade.

Outer corner

In the opposite case, there is a preliminary calculation of the length of the wallpaper strips, taking into account the spare distance, so that without loss to go around the outer corner. Exceptions are examples of using wallpaper with a high density of material. To bend such without loss in appearance and integrity is not always possible.Therefore, a knife is again used to cut strips up to 6 mm thick from the edge of the web, which will be laid over the seam between two trimmings on adjacent walls of the outer corner.

Outside corner

Wallpaper Sticker

The task of pasting corners is even more difficult if the wallpaper is decorated not with a matte plain color, but with decorative images, whether it be drawings or photos. In this case, an unsuccessful "passage" of the corner can disrupt the composition and significantly spoil the appearance of the interior of the room. The reason for such difficulties is the use of the method of overlapping the edge of the corner strip of wallpaper with an adjacent overlap trim that displaces the image. This technology of sticking is used here, but it requires increased accuracy in order not to spoil the appearance of the products.

Wallpaper with a pattern

An “alternative solution” means planning the room so that the area with the disturbed image is blocked by a large interior object such as a closet or wall.

Work with uneven corners

The previous methods work well with standard right angles, however you may encounter less traditional geometry in your room. Then you can overcome the curve angle according to the following instructions:

  1. The wall height is measured and 7 cm is added to the obtained value.
  2. The roll of wallpaper is cut into several strips with the desired thickness and in the appropriate amount. If the canvases contain a drawing, consider this and take fragments from their edge for minimal harm to the composition.
  3. We process the walls and corner with glue, if required for the selected brand of wallpaper. Otherwise, apply the adhesive mixture only on the inside of the strips and stick them to the corner. At this stage, there will inevitably be bumps that should not be scared, because in the future they can be corrected by cutting off excess fragments.
  4. In order to avoid “blockages”, the canvases should be carefully pressed around the entire perimeter of the corner, expelling air accumulations from under them. This will provide better adhesion of the facing products to the surface.
  5. The corner section with two layers of wallpaper joined by an overlap is gently trimmed with a knife. After that, the resulting section is also treated with an adhesive mixture, on top of which a tucked strip fragment is superimposed.

Conclusion

If this workshop was your introduction to wallpapering, you should not be afraid of mistakes in the early stages. Having bought rolls with a margin of 10-15% of the required amount for gluing walls and ceilings, you can afford to spoil one or more paintings in the process. In the future, the task of pasting the inner and outer corners will be no more difficult than applying a typical strip on a flat surface. The technologies described in the above instructions are equally effective in any room architecture, provided that the technical features of the wallpaper are taken into account.
