Attic design in a private house

The design of the attic in a private house is a kind of transformation of the "useful" floor. Work on it can be done even during construction or, if necessary, after operation. First, let's figure out what is the difference between an attic and an attic. The second is a “cold” room between the living area of the house and the roof. It can be equipped, but use will only be limited to warm seasons. Under the attic is an insulated attic, which is properly designed and suitable for living. Previously, these premises were used as cellars or balconies: to collect unnecessary things that eat up a place and do not go to waste. In some old houses here one could even find real treasures or relics of the kind of owners. Hay was stored in the attic villages. The windows, as a rule, were tiny, because in this room there was no need for light.There was no talk of interior decoration: the beams and ceilings were in sight, and the aesthetic appearance of the attic did not bother anyone. Today, the attics are made out very differently. Domestic designers adopted the practice of foreign colleagues, because in Europe these premises are even sold and rented as separate apartments and studios. The equipment of the attic workshop became fashionable at the end of the last century. Now more and more residents of megacities are seeking to move to nature in a country house or village cottage. Accordingly, attics began to pay more attention. Let's try to figure out how to “domesticate” and make a cold attic suitable for living.

Features and Benefits

Attic - decoration of a country house, its zest and a room with beautiful views, because it is located at least on the second floor. The attic has several advantages and features:

  • Additional area, often of impressive size. It becomes a necessity in the face of an acute shortage of square meters.
  • Independence from the styling of a private house. Here you can embody the most daring design fantasies, because the attic is in the "side" from the rest of the rooms.
  • Universality. In the attics, additional bedrooms, living rooms, children's rooms, games rooms and workrooms are equipped.
  • Unlike annexes, it does not burden the construction of the house and does not create additional loads on the foundation and supports.
  • Heavy furniture and durable finishes are allowed.The attics have no restrictions on the weight of the "filling", since their floors are not inferior in reliability to indoor floors.
  • Original forms of roofs emphasize the individuality of the attic. For the designer, such a room will be a real gift, the arrangement of which will be “repelled” from non-standard lines of beams and floors.
  • The roof and the attic in the draft version are built of natural materials, among which the wood is the leader. For this reason, the room will be environmentally friendly and safe for human health.

Of the minuses, an additional “test” is noted for the wallet of the owners, because you have to finish and equip a new spacious room. To create a stylish and luxurious interior, save on furniture and materials, alas, will not work. In simpler options, you can do it yourself, thereby reducing costs to a minimum. Another drawback is the design features of the roof, which forces owners to “customize” the environment for them.

Partition between the kitchen and the living room

Recently, minimal attic ceiling decoration has come into fashion. Its main task: to emphasize the uniqueness of the forms, without hiding the natural surface.

Layout

Before you start large-scale work (decoration, decoration), it is necessary to outline a clear plan of the location of walls, partitions, doorway, ventilation, wiring and other communications. For these purposes, they are sent to the attic and, using a tape measure, measure the distances between the elements, which can have a noticeable effect on the design. Special attention is paid to gables (symmetrical “sides” between the roof slopes) and Mauerlat (part of the roofing system). Their measurements are carried out with particular care. Also pay attention to the height of the floors. In this case, two independent measurements are carried out: from the floor to the rafters in the area of the Mauerlat and the roof ridge. The presence of wooden struts is also taken into account,they are subsequently favorably beaten in non-standard design decisions. Rafter structures can have a number of complex elements. If the latter fall below the level of the conditional ceiling (bolt), their dimensions are also noted and applied to the layout of the room. If the attic is only at the construction stage, then separately consider the placement of windows and doorways. The latter is sometimes contrary to tradition brought out. Thus, you get a completely independent room, which is more like a separate apartment.

Layout of the attic with a living room

The layout of the attic is only necessary for spacious rooms, which are going to place several individual rooms at once. For small attics, a rather simple scheme with an approximate arrangement of furniture and communications is enough.

Warming

You can do the attic insulation yourself. Work on the "refinement" of the premises must be carried out in any case, even if you will not use it for living. In winter, a wind blows under the roof made of timber, which can reduce the overall temperature in the house. The heating system will operate at maximum, which entails additional costs. The humidity level in the off-season in the attic varies greatly, which will negatively affect the timber material, which will subsequently begin to rot and will quickly become worthless. For work, choose the following types of insulation:

  • Mineral wool. Practical and relatively inexpensive material. Available in the form of mats and rolls. Cotton wool has good thermal conductivity, does not ignite, but passes steam, so it is additionally protected from the inside with a waterproofing material.
  • Expanded clay. The material is obtained by burning clay shale or clay. It is lightweight and environmentally friendly. It is produced in granules, therefore, when warming, a frame "box" is separately designed for it, into which expanded clay "balls" are filled.
  • Polyurethane foam.Belongs to the group of gas-filled plastics. There are two types of material: flexible (elastic) and hard (frame). The first is also called foam rubber, and the second is insulated. Polyurethane foam (PUF) is able to further strengthen the structures in which it is used.
  • Fiberglass. The main thing is that the material fits snugly to the surface, then the thermal insulation will be at the highest level. Of the shortcomings, only small “glass” dust is noted, which during work will “float” in the air. It must not be allowed in the eyes, on the skin and in the lungs. Glass wool is the cheapest thermal insulation material.

Insulation of the attic begins with the preparation of the premises for work. He is exempted from all unnecessary items, and sometimes the floor is covered with plywood. If the attic is cold, then mount the ventilation grooves. Then the whole rafter system is fitted with a waterproofing film. From above, the selected insulation is attached to it (they also cover the floor). Then it is covered with a vapor barrier, if necessary. At the end, a lath is made for decorative attic decoration.

Lighting

Attic lighting is summed up from artificial sources and natural light. Typically, in cold attics, the windows are very tiny and are not designed for use in living quarters. In these cases, it will be necessary to mount additional openings, since artificial light cannot be dispensed with.

Natural light

As for the location of the windows, several options are used here:

  • "Pitched" (inclined). In the truest sense of the word, the windows are on the roof. A kind of opening "into the sky." This type is characterized by an abundance of light and amazing views at night.
  • Pediment. The windows are arranged vertically, as in other standard rooms. Such accommodation has a drawback: it is not suitable for complex apartments with many rooms. Some of them, due to their layout, may be completely deprived of light.
  • Cornice.It is used only in rooms with a high wall. The window is divided into two areas: the upper inclined and the lower vertical.
  • Extras. Small round and triangular windows that are installed on the pediment under the ridge. They give little light, but they look organically in the exterior of the building.
  • "Auditory". The windows have a characteristic ledge, which protrudes strongly against the general background of the roof.
  • With a mini balcony. These are the same vertical windows that have an additional superstructure for access to the "street" and a protective parapet.

Natural light in the attic

In large attics, which are very elongated in length, usually set a series of "pitched" skylights on both sides of the ridge. Thus, each section of the room will be equally lit. In small attics, symmetrical “panoramic” windows on both gables look spectacular.

Artificial lighting

Artificial lighting is divided into:

  • The general. The so-called "upper light".
  • Local Illuminates specific places.

If the attic ceiling is beveled or additionally equipped with floor beams, then it is better to refuse general lighting, because it will distort and reduce space. It is replaced by a local one. With the help of spotlights or the same type of plafonds hanging from above on thin "legs", custom lines of the ceiling are emphasized. If you want to give the room soft coziness, then use halogen lamps, and for more "colder" conditions - fluorescent.

A non-standard way to increase the space in small attics is to install a floor mirror in front of the window. Its frame is decorated with numerous bulbs. A “light corridor” is formed between these two elements.

Color selection

When choosing colors, they are repelled from the style in which the room is decorated. In each of the directions there are certain norms for combining shades.If you want to emphasize the features of the attic, then use an abundance of white, natural tones of wood and their combinations. A similar combination is considered classic. In small attic rooms with a deficit of space, give preference to light shades:

  • Gray;
  • White;
  • Sand;
  • Peach;
  • Blue;
  • Pink.

You should not combine more than three colors in one room. There are no color restrictions for large attics.

Stylistic directions

The loft-style attic is decorated with masonry. There should be many windows; if necessary, you will have to attend to the installation of additional openings. The floor is finished with brown parquet. Use furniture of strict forms with plain decoration. The decor is made of ceramic objects, vases with elongated branches, lamps on long curved legs. Loft loves an abundance of metal and wood. Pipes and other communication lines should not be hidden. The attic in Provence is finished with light tones, among which white prevails. Beds and chairs are forged. On the floor or on old tables set bouquets of fresh wildflowers. The windows are curtained with curtains with a cute, floral pattern.

In Scandinavian style, the floor is covered with soft, fluffy carpet. Wooden attic structures are hidden behind false panels or painted in white and blue. The windows do not close with anything, they simply acquire models with beautiful frames. Two armchairs or soft padded stools are necessarily placed at the openings in order to see the surrounding beauty and to drink tea in winter evenings was more convenient. In the eco-style, the floor beams are left “as is”. Any natural details of the attic space are emphasized and not subject to change. In addition, they use decor made of stone, metal and natural textiles. The walls are decorated with decorative planks of wood, which can form a complex composition (concentric circles, squares, triangles).

Bedroom - practical, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing: decoration features

The bedroom is designed mainly with natural materials: wood and stone. In more budgetary options, partitions and wooden boards are casually painted in light shades. Coarse strokes that emphasize the texture of the material will elegantly fit into the interior composition. A sleeping set of a bed and adjacent nightstands is placed either under one of the gables or under slanted windows so that at night before bedtime you can admire the edge of the starry sky. The bedroom in the attic has many dreams come true: the installation of the canopy "crown" of light, airy fabric.

Features of the attic space allow you to install a fireplace in it. A magnificent interior element that will bring with it to the bedroom not only warmth, but also the comfort of a country house.

Features of the design of the living room

To receive guests in the attic is a very original decision. On the one hand, this is the most unusual room in the house, from which a view of the adjacent territory opens. On the other hand, the space allows you to equip a hall with conditional zones for different types of joint recreation. One area is allocated for watching movies: a TV on a stand surrounded by an entire “set” of soft pillows that are laid out directly on the floor. In another zone, place a place for tea with a coffee table and a soft sofa corner. If the size of the attic allows, then another part of the room is equipped for active games or a separate small guest bedroom. It is not necessary to erect monumental ceilings. A fairly simple movable partition.

Children's room under the roof

In the attic, you can arrange a bedroom for a child, a games room or a complete "mini-apartment" for a teenager who seeks freedom. The attic has a special "fabulous" flavor.Many people remember that the most impressive horror stories are told here, and behind any sofa or cupboard a monster, a brownie, or the world's best “ghost with a motor” that lives on the roof, that is, in the neighborhood, can hide. Beat any of these topics, but not to scare the child, but rather dispel his fears and settle in a real fairy tale. For girls, they install whole castle compositions, and for boys, Indian wigwams. Above, under the ridge, birds with outstretched wings, flying Dutch and dream catchers are hung. Hang a hammock or a soaring “armchair” from one of the ceiling beams.

Arrangement of an attic in an office, library or workshop

The attic is an ideal place for arranging a quiet study, a cozy library with a reading room or a spacious workshop where no one will interfere with creative processes. In some embodiments, all three rooms are combined into one, conditionally divided into functional zones.

Bathroom - nothing is impossible

The attic bathroom will make your dreams of a spacious room for water procedures a reality. There is no need to huddle in a narrow shower. The attic squared usually allows to establish a dimensional jacuzzi bathtub. Naturally, before design work, it is necessary to design the necessary communications: water supply and sewage. Some additionally equip the attic bathroom with special cabins, which in their effect are similar to baths. Such a design usually requires a lot of space and fits perfectly into such a room.

Home cinema

The organization of a home theater is an urgent idea that many embody, if not in the attic, so in the basement. The movie room is suitable for those who like to gather large companies. Otherwise, there will be a fairly wide plasma and a cozy corner for two or four “visitors”.The spacious "cinema" is equipped with several sofas placed parallel to each other, or rows of chairs of the same type. The first is considered preferable, as the seating can not only be rearranged, but also moved to other rooms. At the same time, how to “attach” dozens of identical chairs to anywhere besides the cinema will be problematic.

Dressing room - save space

The attic can be fully used for dressing room equipment or you can allocate only a small area for it, and give the remaining space for living quarters. The room for storing things is equipped with long or spiral-shaped (leaving the top to the ridge) hangers, as in boutiques. Closed and open racks for storing shoes and various small things are installed near the walls. Must have a place to relax: with poufs or chairs, a table and a high mirror. In some stylish rooms, even mini-fitting rooms are equipped.

Conclusion

The attic is considered a unique room, the main advantage of which is versatility. In the attic, you can really equip a room of any plan with different functional purposes. There are no restrictions on the style in this room either, the design will be chosen in accordance with the taste preferences of the owners. Another plus of the attic is the possibility of budget registration and carrying out basic work independently without the involvement of specialists. If desired, most of the decoration is left in its original form and simply beat these eco-elements in the design.
