Old boards in interior design

Board in the interior

The board is traditionally associated with wood products. In fact, the first samples were made of stone and burnt clay. Such boards were not used in the design of houses, but played the role of information plates on which important data for descendants were stored. In everyday life, use slate, magnetic, chopping, ironing and chalk boards. More than three centuries ago, the first circulation saw was invented. With its help it was possible to expand the production of boards to an industrial scale. The unit replaced the impractical pit saws that had previously been used at sawmills. Boards in the interior have been used since ancient times, when a person learned to process wood. Moreover, they were used as a rough finish, and in the form of decor. Previously, material was prized primarily because of its low cost and availability. Now the priorities have changed and people are more attracted by their environmental friendliness in wooden boards, since it is becoming increasingly difficult to find something natural in the market of high-quality imitations. As for accessibility, the use of rare, valuable breeds has become fashionable, so it’s difficult to call them cheap.Although a simple pine tree has managed to maintain its niche in the market, it is used only in the most unpretentious interiors. We will talk about how to decorate the surfaces of the house with boards correctly.

Fashion or tradition?

Stylish decisions in the field of design are undoubtedly dictated by fashion. This lady, as you know, is very capricious and in a couple of years can cultivate and overthrow materials, colors and whole directions. However, there are paradoxical things that do not obey fashion trends and remain “timeless”. The habit of their use is so deeply rooted in the mind of man that he simply can’t refuse them. Boards can be described as a “fashion tradition." The material became popular due to the demand for a number of styles in which it is used, but they have never been forgotten about it. A tree, like a brick, a stone never left the interiors of houses and apartments due to the established tradition. So far, they have simply not come up with more practical and convenient materials for humans. Imitations (even of high quality) are actively created, but the original is always one step higher than skillful fakes. The board, as a geometric object, thanks to its universal shape, can easily fit into any interior composition.

Types of Finishing Board

Boards are used in the decoration of walls, floors and ceilings. Depending on the processing technology and characteristics, they are classified into the following types:

  • Lining. Used for exterior and interior decoration. Lining is thin sheets that are connected to each other by the principle of "spike groove".The material can be made of wood, wood waste (MDF) or plastic. Depending on the profile, the lining is divided into types: American, Standard, Calm, Euro.
  • Imitation of a bar. This species has only recently begun to be regarded as independent. Previously, he was assigned to the subgroups of lining. Imitation of a bar is made of carefully dried wood and has an impressive thickness. It is difficult for the average person to distinguish this finishing material from the original, since it thoroughly repeats its texture.
  • Terrace boards. They are made from a composite of wood and polymers. The material is used for terraces. Due to the nature of the arrangement, stringent requirements are imposed on the board for strength and stability. The material must be treated with special compounds, and grooves are applied to its surface, which reduce slippage and help to cope with additional loads in the form of temperature extremes and changes in humidity.
  • Block house. It is a board with a semicircular face. Four boards of a block house are cut from one log, and the core is put into processing under a regular lining.
  • Planken or facade board. The material is mainly used in the exterior. In many ways, planken looks like a terrace board. Fragments are fixed between themselves in two ways: end-to-end and overlap. Regardless of the method, a technological gap is always maintained between the modules, which ensures air circulation.
  • Parquet board. A multilayer material that is used to finish the floor. It is made from several sheets of wood that are coated with a protective film. The closest “relative” and competitor of the floorboard is the laminate. It is less capricious, although it is made according to a similar principle.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the barn board. This type includes any wood materials that have already been used previously and are reused.Old fragments of decoration help create a light, casual interior in a rustic style, country, ethnicity. Three groups of boards are distinguished by the sawing of the “sides”:

  • Unedged. Boards are processed only from two wide sides, and two side are left in their natural form.
  • Edged. All four of their faces are sawn and have smooth, even surfaces.
  • Half trim. Only three sides are processed, and the fourth (short sidewall) retains its original appearance.
  • Croaker. These boards process only one wide side. The croaker is often used in the manufacture of temporary fences.

Also, boards are sorted into groups depending on the type of wood from which they are made. Conditionally, classification can be simplified to valuable and simple.

Application options

The board is a universal material. It is used to finish all surfaces inside and outside the house without restrictions. Modular elements of wood look original in the rooms and are in harmony with the modern loft, chalet, art deco and with lighter provence. A number of ethnic interiors, country and rustic, Scandinavian, eco style can not do without this material at all.

Wall decoration

The board is suitable for budget and luxury wall decoration. For cladding surfaces in elite styles, it is recommended to choose a wide and thick lining. The field of coloring material will give the room coziness and make it more homely. You can experiment with laying a regular board: attach it with a herringbone, diamonds, diagonally or create whole mosaics from rich wood shades. Rough, poorly finished surfaces are ideal for summer cottages, while smooth surfaces suit more rigorous styles. Coloring with the ombre effect will create a unique color scheme due to gradient transitions of shades.

Ceiling decoration

The ceiling is also lined with boards, although traditionally this surface is decorated with white stucco. Spacious rooms can preserve the natural color of wood.In cramped rooms with low ceilings, it is better to resort to painting in light shades. The combinations of board and plaster surfaces separated by ceiling beams look unique. Chalet style options are used. To decorate the surface of the ceiling, a lining, an edged board, narrow slats are used, a special set of modular elements similar to parquet, but decorated with a layer of veneer on the front side. Since the material dominates the interior, it is advised to combine it with plaster and simple wallpaper without catchy patterns.

Flooring

To finish the floor using a laminate, parquet and modern engineering board. These materials are elite and win in comparison with linoleum and carpet. Parquet is suitable only for hallways, living rooms, bedrooms and children. It is not recommended to lay in rooms with an aggressive microclimate: kitchens and bathrooms. Laminate is less selective and adapts perfectly to special conditions. Engineering board is a relatively new finishing material. It is similar to the parquet analogue, but consists of two layers: the outer one of valuable species and the inner one of high-quality plywood. Above the floors sheathed by an engineering board, a number of manipulations can be carried out: grind, paint, process. As a result, the surface becomes as similar as possible to a solid wood.

Other applications

The material is widely used in the decoration of furniture surfaces and large interior objects. The latter include partitions, false walls, doors, bar counters. Boards are lined with boards, which become the conditional center of any room and invariably attract general attention to themselves. Furniture made of this material looks very original. Boards adorn sofas, chairs, armchairs, coffee tables, chests of drawers and shelves. Such furniture looks organically in eco-interiors and rooms decorated in the Scandinavian style, Provence, country. To shade the naturalness of the decor, the walls are covered with photo murals with thematic forest landscapes. The set made of thermal wood will bring special warmth to the kitchen. From a rough "barn" board make a high headboard. The original interior object will become a decoration of the Scandinavian style and is perfectly combined with other natural elements: deer horns, animal skins or decor from real twigs.

Furniture from boards

Furniture made of boards looks organically not only in the interiors of houses. It can be a substitute for gardening items if the kit is installed on the terrace, backyard or in the gazebo, bathhouse.

Design Recommendations

The board is added to the interior in strict dosages. The setting must be balanced. This is especially important with respect to the old board, which looks a bit gloomy. So that the decoration does not seem satiated, it is recommended to adhere to simple rules:

  • From boards it is better to carry out only two or three large interior objects or decorate with them only one accent wall. Do not sheathe this material around the room.
  • If the boards are used in furniture, then the optimal background for them will be brickwork. In a loft setting, coarse elements will look especially colorful.
  • Combine wood with modern materials and expensive textiles. Then the interior will be stylish and not outdated.
  • Pay attention to the width, thickness of the board, its texture and color. These characteristics should be consistent with the overall stylistic concept.

Fortunately, boards can be processed and, if necessary, dismantled or repainted. Having made a mistake in design, it can always be fixed.

In which room and how to arrange

In large living rooms, it is recommended to cover the whole accent walls with old boards. Against such a background, modern furniture with expensive textiles will look original. The contrast between the cracks and scuffs of already used wood and the elegant, rich surfaces will give a special highlight to the setting. In the kitchen from the boards there are facades, headsets, stools, chairs and sometimes countertops. In combined versions, the material decorates the partitions. In the interior of the office, it is recommended to plank the library corner with planks - a place for internal concentration, where you can tune into the working mood. In the bedroom, material decorates part of the wall, ceiling, head of the bed, bedside tables or dressing table. To emphasize these elements, it is advised to add decorative lighting in the form of bulbs around the perimeter of the room or carefully disguised devices located in the immediate vicinity of accent details.

Artificial Aging

To artificially age the boards, you need a stiff brush, varnish, brushes, paint and a pair of sponges. This method is simple and least expensive. First, the surface is treated with a coarse brush with metal bristles. With its help you can work out the relief and highlight specific areas. Then apply a layer of varnish. After it dries, the boards are painted. A couple of minutes after applying the paint in some places it is removed with a sponge to get the effect of a tree that is slightly frayed by time. The brush can be replaced with a planer or abrasive powders. The main thing is that the tool "get" to the textured layer of wood with a bright pattern.

Conclusion

Recently, there has been a tendency to use unpretentious, roughly processed materials, even in elite styles. A person cut off from nature, increasingly wants to create a kind of semblance of her corner at home. Wooden boards help to cope with this task. In eco-style, unexpected combinations of aged surfaces with real stumps, branches, decorative paths from saw cuts and lush thickets of wild flora are used. The textured walls from the boards seem to transfer the luxurious atmosphere of a city apartment to the cottage or to the country house. Natural elements enliven the interior and at the same time make it more comfortable and original.
