How to install a sink in the kitchen: installation rules

Installing a sink in the kitchen

A man cannot imagine his life without a kitchen sink. For someone, a sink is a plumbing product designed only for convenient washing dishes. Some make it a pride that can dramatically change the look of the kitchen.

Accustomed to a comfortable existence, people install this plumbing even in temporary homes, at dachas, estates. But few people think that the invention has become available to the masses recently, since the advent of water supply and sewage. Prior to this, a bucket or basin of water had to be dispensed with.

Types of sinks for the kitchen

A sink is an important part of the working triangle of the kitchen. This is an indispensable attribute, without which it is difficult to carry out daily activities related to cooking, washing dishes. Therefore, the choice of this subject is approached responsibly. It should be practical, convenient, durable, consistent with the interior of the room.

Sinks differ in shape and size, material of manufacture, design features, design, price. Depending on the installation method, all sinks are divided into the following types:

  1. Mortise. They look spectacular. Reliable and functional in operation, easy to maintain. Differ in the low price. They are installed in the countertop, which is made of a variety of materials: natural, liquid (acrylic), artificial stone, wood, stainless steel, chipboard, fiberboard, chipboard. Installation can be done with your own hands, or resort to the help of a specialist. To do this, a hole of the appropriate size is cut out on the plane. Between the sink and the working surface there is a gasket, which is characterized by waterproofing and sound-absorbing properties. The kitchen, which has a common countertop, which combines the cabinets, hob, sink, has a holistic, unique look.
  2. Integrated. Made of acrylic, artificial stone. Visually look like cast. There are monolithic and glued options. The color, material of the bowl and countertop are identical. They are distinguished by the absence of seams, a variety of shapes, original appearance, easy maintenance. Suitable for any style solution to the interior of the room. Artificial stone is afraid of hot water, sharp heavy objects, abrasive substances, requires careful courtship. The most expensive coating option, if damaged, it is difficult to find a replacement.
  3. Undertables. A kind of mortise sinks.They differ in the way they are located relative to the countertop. They are not visible, they are below the surface. Their sides have no bends, they must be straight, even. They are made of metal, artificial stone, plastic is very rarely used. They look stylish, but they are difficult to install, not suitable for all surfaces, have a high price.
  4. Overhead. Made of stainless sheet, porcelain. They got their name thanks to the installation method. They are placed on separate stands, with which they represent a single design. They differ in a rectangular shape, at the bottom of the bowl the edges are rounded. This is the most affordable option for surfaces, does not require special skills during installation. The cabinet does not have a full back wall. Its internal space is used to store auxiliary items: a broom, a bin, rags, cans, pots.

Materials used for the production of sinks

When choosing a kitchen sink, pay attention to the raw materials from which it is made. The parameter is important, since the cost of the product, its appearance, combination with the interior of the kitchen depend on it. Consider the most popular materials used by manufacturers:

  • Stainless steel. The most common type. Differs in moderate price. Products are heat-resistant, shockproof, durable, easy to clean. Two types are available: solid, made of one sheet, without seams; welded, consisting of several pieces of metal. The second option has its advantages, the product is made with thickened walls, respectively, less subjected to mechanical damage. Quality shells are made of non-magnetic steel with impurities of chromium and nickel, often these figures are 18% and 10%, respectively. Additives increase corrosion resistance.

You can independently check the quality of the metal from which the product is released, in a simple way. It is enough to attach a magnet to the surface.He is not attracted to stainless steel.

  • Composite material. All sinks made from artificial stone can be divided into two types: made from agglomerate and acrylic. The first type is a crumb of natural stone, interconnected using polymers. The most commonly used substances are granite, quartz, fiberglass. The amount of crumbs affects the quality of the product, in a percentage ratio is from 80 to 95%. For the manufacture of the second type, methyl methacrylate, aluminum hydroxide, and coloring matter are used. Acrylic resin is very malleable, ductile, so the bowl can have an arbitrary shape.
  • A natural stone. Granite, onyx, travertine, and others are used as raw materials. The most expensive material, as the product is carved from a single piece of stone. It is resistant to mechanical damage, high temperatures, absorbs sound well. It requires constant care and periodic maintenance, which consists in applying special sealant to the surface at least once every six months.

In addition to the materials listed, ceramics (sanitary ware, china), plastic, glass are used in the manufacture of kitchen sinks.

Stone sink

Forms of sinks

Product development is ongoing, new models appear. But they all differ from each other by materials of manufacture, installation method, design features, sizes. Consider in detail the shapes of kitchen sinks:

  1. Square, rectangular. Standard models. Differ in functionality.
  2. Round, oval. Very compact, take up less space than rectangular ones. Do not have additional compartments. The average bowl diameter is 45 cm.
  3. Curly. They can be produced as tri-, pentagonal, in the form of a trapezoid, rhombus. Equipped with additional bowls, side wings.

When choosing curly products, the following fact is taken into account.: the more complex the shape of the work surface, the more difficult it is to keep it perfectly clean.

Square sink

For more convenient use, sinks may have additional elements. Depending on the design and number of bowls, the products are divided into the following subspecies:

  • One bowl. Common models. Take up minimal space. Rarely have auxiliary elements.
  • A few bowls. Sinks are divided into sections. May be: one and a half, when one of the recesses is half the size of the other; double, triple - with equal, different bowls. The mixer must be of high quality, as its watering can is constantly moving.
  • Sink with a "wing". The working surface is not limited only to the section, it can continue in one, immediately in both directions. Such items are designed to place washed, dirty dishes, detergents, and defrosting foods on them.

By the method of placement, the structures are divided into frontal (installed along the wall) and angular.

Choosing a place for washing

Proper planning of the kitchen space is very important. This takes into account the working triangle, which make up the refrigerator, stove, sink. The sink is often used in the process of preparing, preparing food, during cleaning, so its location is very scrupulous. Choosing the best place, you should adhere to certain rules:

  • It is convenient to place the object between the refrigerator and the stove, this option is possible with a linear, L-shaped layout (the sink is in the corner). The arrangement corresponds to the natural course: products from the refrigerator fall under water, after which they are cooked.
  • The sink must not come in contact with the stove or refrigerator. The distance to these objects is at least 60 cm. If a water overflow occurs, it can extinguish the fire, fill the equipment. In extreme cases, with a lack of free space, it is better to move to the refrigerator.
  • An important aspect is the location of the main communications (water supply, sewage). Removal from pipes will entail not only a significant increase in cost of installation, but also complicate it, while increasing the risk of breakage, water leakage.
  • It is convenient to install the sink in the middle of the countertop, dividing it into functional zones. For example, on the one hand you can put dirty dishes, and on the other hand, cut clean products.
  • To increase comfort, the sink can be installed at the window. This will allow you to enjoy the panorama, listen to the rustling of trees, birdsong. Natural light passes through the window. With this arrangement, the height of the countertop is determined by the level of the window sill.

Mortise sink installation

Kitchen furniture consists of different products, each of which performs a specific function. The countertop is one of the main elements of the kitchen. It is a work surface, and can also become a frame for the sink. The material from which it is made is important, the ability to withstand loads depends on it. Thin composite panels will only hold stainless models. Stone sinks require a massive surface, it must be made of similar material, have a special design that includes holders.

Installing a sink in a wooden countertop is quite possible to do it yourself, as for granite, it is better to entrust the work to professionals. Of course, you can try to insert yourself by observing the recommendations for working with a specific material, but for this you will need a special milling cutter or waterjet, the price of which will be several times higher than the cost of the hole. Let us consider in more detail the method of installing mortise sinks.

Mortise sink installation

Necessary tools and materials

Before starting work, an audit of existing tools should be carried out, and if necessary, purchased. The standard set includes:

  • measuring instruments, pencil, marker, cardboard, adhesive tape;
  • construction knife, glue, sealant, screws;
  • adjustable spanners, spanners, screwdrivers, pliers;
  • electric drill, drill, jigsaw;
  • sink, mixer, siphon, hoses for water supply.

Marking and carving a niche

Having determined the location of the product, it remains to perform a number of simple steps by which the installation of the sink in the kitchen will be successful. The step-by-step process is as follows:

  1. Mortise sinks are sold complete with pre-made cardboard templates and fasteners. If there are none, you will have to cut the patterns yourself. In this case, the sink itself will become a template. A sheet of cardboard is applied to it, a silhouette is circled along the contours, the workpiece is cut.
  2. To determine the inner contour, according to which the cut is made, the width of the side is measured. After that, these data are transferred to the workpiece to indicate the final type of pattern.
  3. On the countertop, the drain is indicated. A template is applied to it, fixed with tape, an outline is drawn. In this case, the indent from the front end of the working surface to the rim of the sink should be more than 5 cm, from the back - 2.5 cm.
  4. Holes are drilled along the contour of the finished marking using an electric drill. For the passage of a jigsaw blade, a drill diameter of 10-12 mm is sufficient. The number of holes depends on the shape of the installed bowl. For round - the step between them will be 7 cm, for square, rectangular - four passes of the drill in the corners are enough. Drilling and cutting work is performed on the front side of the surface. Next, with the help of a jigsaw, a hole for a sink is sawed. After that, the cut is cleaned of dust, polished with sandpaper.
  5. The saw edges are treated with silicone based sealant. It protects the wood, devoid of coating, from swelling. Insufficient sealing can cause the tabletop to rot at the saw cut, so it is better to apply a double layer.

Countertops made of artificial stone usually come with a finished hole for the sink. If there is none, but at the same time there is an irresistible desire to cut the sink on your own, instead of a jigsaw you should use a milling cutter, in extreme cases, a grinder with discs having diamond spraying. After cutting the holes, the edges are overwritten with a grinder.

Marking

The process of installing and connecting the sink

  1. With a brush, spatula, a layer of transparent silicone is applied to the work surface in the area of the lining of the sink rim.
  2. The sealant processes the rim of the sink inside. It provides reliable fastening of the objects in question, does not allow fluid to pass at the junction of the elements.
  3. The next step is to install the sink in the cut hole. It is superimposed on the side of the crane mount. Gradually presses until the objects are in full contact. Protruding excess sealant is removed with a rag.
  4. Using fasteners, the sink is fixed to the countertop. They can be plastic, metal. More reliable iron clips.
  5. After the installation is completed, the necessary communications are connected. Usually the sink is mounted with a mixer fixed on it, and the only thing left to do is screw the water supply hoses (hot, cold) to the water pipes.
  6. At the final stage, a drain is established. The siphon is discharged into the sink, and the corrugated pipe is inserted into the sewer.

Features of installing a surface wash

The main advantage of overhead products is their low cost and extreme ease of installation. They combine well with almost any kitchen design. They can be made of different materials, but stainless steel remains the main one. The sink is simply put on the cabinet, the main thing is to choose its size in order to avoid the appearance of unnecessary gaps between the kitchen furniture.

Surface preparation of the cabinet is not required. It is a rectangular hole, which is limited by the walls of the cabinet. The only thing that needs to be done is to process the ends of the walls of the nightstand with silicone, to provide the wood with insulation from moisture.

Installing the sink

Installation materials and tools

Although the installation is not complicated, but the execution of work requires a set of the following set of tools:

  • fasteners, masking tape;
  • measuring instruments, pencil, ruler;
  • electric drill;
  • pliers;
  • set of drills for wood;
  • silicone sealant;
  • a bedside table with a working surface, water hoses, a mixer, a siphon.

Materials and Tools

Washing installation process

Before the installation of the overhead sink begins, the support table is assembled. The doors are mounted on the cabinet after installing the work surface. Before starting work on fixing the sink, a siphon and mixer are attached to it. Next, the design is connected together, this can be done in several ways:

  1. Mount on glue. The sink should be wider than the bedside table, cover the ends of the walls. The places of contact of the elements are treated with a sealant, a sink is installed on top of the support, pressed. After the silicone has completely dried, the two objects are completely glued together.
  2. Mounting on brackets. The universal way. Fasteners are included with the product and may be sold separately. The fixing process begins with fixing the brackets to the ends of the sidewalls of the support, for this they use self-tapping screws that are screwed from the inside of the side walls. Next, a sink is installed, while the main screw of fastening should abut against the end in its metal corner. The pressing to the ends is regulated by moving the mounting bracket.
  3. Fixing on a hand-held stand. The product is made in the form of a lathing; it can be mounted inside to the walls of the cabinet. After installation, the sink is held on the walls and on the frame. The lathing can be an independent support.
  4. Use of wooden bars. In the absence of brackets, the presence of defects on the pedestal, you can use the bars that will serve as fasteners.

At the final stage, the corrugated pipe from the siphon is taken out to the sewer, and the hoses are connected to the water supply system. After checking the design for leaks, you can safely use the sink.

Sink installation

Underfloor washing installation

The fixing of the under-table sink occurs at the bottom of the countertop. This issue should be taken seriously. Here, the thickness of the working surface, the material from which it is made, is taken into account. Can be installed under ceramic, plastic, granite, wooden countertops. The stages of preparation, marking are similar to those of the other sinks. There are some differences between fixing items among themselves:

  1. Using plywood substrates or from chipboard, the product is glued to the countertop. Fixation of the sink is carried out using the kitchen frame, special brackets.
  2. Low-weight steel washers can only be built in with the support brackets. This option is used for thin surfaces.
  3. For stone countertops, the structure can be assembled as follows: the edges of the sink are treated with silicone, then attached using screws with dowels. Additionally, you can fasten the joints of objects with epoxy resin.

Undercounter sink

Conclusion

The sink is an important element of the kitchen. It not only serves for practical purposes, but also is able to transform the design of the entire room. When arranging, repairing the kitchen, you have to choose a set made in the same style, so it is better to take things from one manufacturer, for example, ikea, which produces the whole range of necessary equipment.
