Cozy Coffee Shop Design

Coffee shop design

The world's first coffee house opened in the 16th century in the heart of the Ottoman Empire - Constantinople. Since the culture of drinking coffee originated here, it was not at all surprising. In those days, for the export of unprocessed grains that could sprout, they were sentenced to death. The Ottomans zealously guarded their monopoly on the trade in exotic raw materials. In this regard, the Old World was late for the whole two centuries that it took him to transfer coffee from the category of pharmaceutical preparations to the status of a fragrant drink, replacing tea. Coffee houses in Europe began to open sequentially, first in Venice - the romantic "capital" of Italy, then in London, Berlin and Vienna. The last tradition to drink coffee in a specially designated institution for these purposes was adopted by the Americans. In those days there was only one type of coffee house - thematic. They gathered people who were united not only by their love of a bitter, invigorating drink, but also by common interests. Now institutions are opening in several formats, which we will talk about later. The design of a coffee shop is an important aspect of a successful business, which directly affects its attendance, and, accordingly, profitability.

Coffee shop design features

Depending on the format, coffee houses are classified into the following types:

  • Vending. Automated devices that are located in the "hot" spots of the city, where there are large crowds. Vending will require a lot of free time and effort from the owner, since the units need to be serviced around the clock and repaired in a timely manner.
  • Auto cafe. A practice that has not taken root in our country. The coffee house is located right in the passenger compartment of the minibus. The idea is like ice cream vans.
  • Stall or islet. This is a mobile coffee shop, which, if necessary, is easy to move to another point. The option is designed for an audience that has no time to sit at tables, so they drink hot drinks on the go.
  • Full-fledged coffee shop or cafe, cafeteria at the airport, shopping center. This establishment includes a kitchen and a hall for visitors, where they can safely drink coffee, grab a dessert and chat with friends.

A compulsory service is the sale of take-away drinks. Cafe will require large investments, but the return will be many times more. Sometimes they are combined with a bar, as in the network company Zest.
We are interested in the latter option, since in a full-fledged institution where people are constantly located, design plays one of the main roles. Guests here should be comfortable and cozy enough to constantly want to come back again and bring big companies. When designing coffee houses, a number of nuances are taken into account:

  • Visitor area should be spacious.Since such establishments are usually located in crowded places, they must accommodate a large number of visitors. Accordingly, the area with tables and chairs should occupy the lion's share of the rented premises.
  • The right choice of style. The design of the coffee shop should be light, unobtrusive, because visitors do not come here to savor expensive wines and enjoy delicious dishes. This is not a restaurant. Here, guests want to take a break, drink a cup of coffee in the bite with a croissant or a piece of tiramisu and run away on their business. An unobtrusive setting in which everyone can relax is ideal for a quick bite. However, accent details that will become catchy, catchy should be highlighted against a neutral background. Creative is welcome in this regard. An exception will be only those cases in which the institution is designed for a narrow circle of regular visitors. Then the design is selected thematic.
  • Furniture. Avoid budget plastic tables and chairs. They evoke anguish and unpleasant associations with garden furniture. Chairs or sofas should be soft, and tables should be comfortable. Be sure to divide the visitor area into sectors for small groups, single guests and large companies. Choose round shapes that visitors and waiters will not cling to or hurt.
  • Follow the rules of zoning. They will not limit creativity at all and will not prevent the designer from introducing their creative ideas into the environment. Since typical coffee houses occupy small rooms, you need to arrange tables either in a straight line or in a checkerboard pattern.
  • Observe the distance between the pieces of furniture. The main passages should have a width of at least 2 m, and the auxiliary passages should be 1.5. This is quite enough so that visitors can move the chairs away and at the same time not disturb the guests, scurrying around the hall.

And now we will consider several stylistic directions and features of their embodiment in the interiors of coffee houses.

The menu design is not enough, but it’s worth putting a “tick” opposite this item. It can not include dishes or full dinners. Only desserts and pastries. Since coffee expenses are usually scanty, and the average bill is not so big, the profitability of the institution will depend on its capacity, that is, the emphasis should be on the number of visitors, so they should not linger for a long time and take up half a day. Otherwise, the institution will lose its revenue.

Classic style interior

The interior of the coffee shop in a classic style looks like a picture from an old magazine, where luxury came to the fore. Do not overdo it in a similar institution with decor: arches, columns, pilasters and stucco molding. It is enough to use the classic color scheme, consisting of pastel colors, shades of brown and light options of green, blue, yellow. Natural wood or its very high-quality imitation is used in the decoration, but not with such a rough treatment as in a chalet or country. The walls are decorated with mirrors and reproductions of paintings by famous artists of the past. Instead of lamps use sconces in the form of candlesticks. Windows are closed with heavy curtains with garters. Natural textiles adorn a barely noticeable floral ornament. Classics are characterized by rooms with high ceilings. They are emphasized by a luxurious crystal chandelier located in the center of the visitor area.

Provence style

The style of the French heartland is perhaps the best option if the design project is implemented with your own hands according to the budget plan. Most of the decor can be made by yourself. Cute flower curtains, funny wallpapers on the walls, landscapes in the frame, small sculpture, fresh flowers in pots, baskets, openwork napkins and tablecloths on the tables - this will become the main decoration of the interior. Furniture does not have to be new. It can be sanded, re-painted white and decorated using decoupage technique. The walls and ceiling are covered with plaster, the floor is covered with parquet or tile, and the windows are curtained with light Roman curtains. For a budget coffee house, Provence will be the best design decision.

Modern design

The modern style in the coffee house looks organically, unobtrusively and at the same time strictly. Of course, such an institution will be more targeted at young people who will appreciate the effective implementation of modern technologies in design. Chairs and tables choose unusual shapes with rounded corners. The ceiling is painted in dark colors and decorated with fake beams. Massive chandeliers are abandoned in favor of luminaires with shades of laconic shapes. The basis of the color scheme is white, gray, black, brown and an additional bright shade as an accent. The minimum amount of decor is used, and they choose it from non-standard options: a pair of floor vases, a large print on a plastic partition between the common room and the utility room, avant-garde sculptures on each table. Windows are closed with simple curtains of one or two contrasting shades. The floor is finished with wood or tile. The walls are plastered, painted or sheathed with plastic panels.

Loft style

The loft-style coffee shop uses simple furniture and minimal decor. Mandatory presence of accent walls, finished with brick or masonry. This luxurious and unobtrusive style is embodied in trendy European cafes, which are worth following. Windows do not close with curtains at all, enough office blinds. But the frames need to be used with a large number of internal partitions, as in the veranda options. It was such windows that were previously installed in industrial shops, the atmosphere of which is largely replicated by the loft. Behind the barista’s counter, a spectacular panorama of the night city is placed. They also hang a slate board with a meek menu today.Wiring and pipes are not covered with false panels, but left “as is”, because this interior solution will allow you to turn communications into decor. The floor is finished with wood. To add coziness, one of the walls is fixed with a pair of shelves with paintings, author's pictures, watches and a pair of stylish gizmos.
It's important to know. In the loft, lighting plays a special role. Indoors, large amounts of spotlights and ordinary bulbs without shades should be present.

Minimalism

In small rooms, you can realize an interesting solution in the form of a minimalist interior. Laconicism and rationality of the style will help visually expand the cramped space, add air to it due to avaricious decor and strict zoning. The decoration uses natural materials: wood, stone, tile, brick. Minimalism is characterized by ease of form and simple geometry. In the color scheme, white prevails. It is present in the decoration, upholstery and a few decorative details. In addition to the main tone, there will be gray, hazel, black and soft colors of coffee with milk, which will look very symbolic. Minimalists are beholders in the shower, so indoors necessarily add a piece of wildlife. It can be pots with shoots of decorative barley or oats, lotuses in miniature bowls with water or bonsai dwarf trees. You can also install a wall-mounted waterfall on glass, which will add a soothing touch to the overall atmosphere.

Oriental

The oriental style for coffee houses is considered native, because the tradition of drinking a bitter drink appeared here. The tables are separated from each other with the help of light, translucent curtains that remotely resemble tents. Additional zoning of the premises is carried out using arched arches of carved wood, which are held on decorative beams. To implement a cozy direction in the interior, an abundance of textiles is used. Fabrics are an important component of design.Brightly colored textile curtains close the windows. Upholstery is made of variegated material. Sofas, ottomans and chairs are decorated with bedspreads and pillows with themed patterns. Low tables are made of solid wood. The floor is finished with parquet board and must be covered with a large oriental carpet. Candles are placed on the tables, and the wall is decorated with lamps in wrought iron shades. Instead of ordinary glasses, stained-glass windows are inserted into the windows.

Mini coffee shop design

A mini-coffee shop is an establishment where you can order takeaway coffee. This option is ideal for small businesses with the expectation of a small budget, when you do not need to conduct "complex" bookkeeping. Small establishments are usually deprived of a common room, they fit in a compact "booth" in which there is an apparatus for making coffee and a counter with ready-made pastries. Coffee shops are less common with a couple of tables or chairs at the counter, but they are still more focused on passing guests who take orders with them. The design of such an institution uses fusion, high-tech and loft. Wood is used in decoration to make the interior look more solid. The optimal combination of dark shades with classic brown, gray, white. They complete the design with a neon sign and a slate board with a price list, written in small pieces by hand. It is fashionable to finish the accent wall behind the counter with brick or masonry, cover it with frosted glass or mirror tile. To make it more comfortable in a cramped room, it is decorated with spotlights around the perimeter and a group of small chandeliers in original plafonds.

Color scheme

The color palette is selected based on the rules of psychological perception of shades and their combinations. If you want the institution to be remembered, do not paint it in an aggressive combination of screaming tones.Such a design will leave only an unpleasant aftertaste and visitors will no longer have a desire to return to the coffee house. A win-win option is the use of natural shades of wood: beige, walnut, honey, brown, wenge, coffee with milk, cream. A pastel palette will also help create a cozy atmosphere. Bright shades are used in small quantities and only in accents: orange, yellow, blue, green, pink, coral, mint, blue, purple. You should not combine more than three colors in the decoration of a coffee shop. Exceptions will be only oriental style, ethnicity and fusion. These directions are based on the use of bright color combinations in thematic ornaments.

Decoration Materials

Of course, in the decoration it is recommended to use natural materials: brick, stone, wood, veneer or cork. But, unfortunately, their purchase does not always fit into a limited budget, so in order to save money, high-quality imitation is suitable. Walls can be pasted over with wallpaper or plaster, sheathed with PVC panels. The first two options look good in combination with each other. Using their combination, the zoning of the room is carried out. The floor is recommended to be tiled or to use bulk. Laminate, parquet board and linoleum will not withstand daily wet cleaning, will quickly “harden” and become completely unusable. The ceiling is plastered, painted or sheathed with plasterboard.

Furniture

For coffee shops that are designed to sell takeaway drinks, hard chairs are suitable. If in the institution it is customary to linger longer, it is better to purchase upholstered furniture. Sofas for large companies and upholstered chairs for single guests. In this case, the furniture must meet the following requirements:

  • Ergonomics. Choose compact and lightweight elements. Massive stools and chairs will be uncomfortable to use and take up too much space.
  • Practicality. The surface of the furniture should be easy to clean, as with a large influx of visitors it will inevitably become dirty.
  • Aesthetics. Furniture should be beautiful and at the same time fit into the overall design concept, that is, match the style of the interior.

Stability and durability. Choose reliable tables and chairs that will not become loose after a month of use, otherwise the owner risks injuring visitors.
The stand is the “face” of the coffee house, so it is chosen from a durable material with a beautiful glossy surface that can withstand constant rubbing. You will also have to acquire counters in which examples of pastries and sweets attached to coffee will be exhibited under the glasses.

Lighting

Lighting in the coffee shop will be multi-stage. Firstly, the central chandelier is rarely used, since in any case it will be necessary to additionally equip each table with lamps. Secondly, it is necessary to provide working lighting in the area of the bar and cash desk area. Spotlights or neon necessarily emphasize the counters so that visitors can see the “product face”. A ceiling chandelier or wall sconce is hung near each table. To create a romantic atmosphere, use candles on coasters or small individual lamps. The luxury of the interior and its “strengths” are emphasized by spot lights located in accent areas.

Conclusion

If you decide to open your own business, but don’t know how to draw up your own coffee house attractively, you can visit famous network establishments for inspiration: Chocolate House, Starbucks, Costa Kofi, Coffee House. They can be considered as examples of a successful business with cozy interiors that attract visitors. Do not rush into the pool with your head and start with design experiments. There will still be time for this when the establishment will become popular, and the income stable. And at the very beginning of the way, it is better to take an example from those who have already reached certain heights, and use proven design schemes.
