Different types of curtains in the kitchen

Provence is one of the most interesting styles in the interior, which harmoniously combines natural shades of nature, simple decoration, modern furniture, and household items. Such a variety and originality of style appeared not without reason. Provence in the interior of the kitchen and other rooms arose in the south of France, received the same name with the region. This amazing region is famous for its stunning nature, as well as the climate, lavender fields, azure shores that have been praised by wandering musicians for years. Travelers, as well as word-of-mouth writers, conveyed admiration for this hospitable land, where completely rich people lived with taste and beauty. Despite the poor environment, the interior of the village houses was filled with light and comfort. All items of kitchen utensils or decorative elements were not only practically located, but were often made with their own hands, which made their value many times greater.

Today, the most relevant is the design of the Provence style kitchen, because the originality of this direction was hospitality, handicrafts of simple rural residents, who created beauty and coziness in their small dwellings, having simple natural objects at hand. Of course, time does not stand still, the modern Provence style is much improved. Its creation uses beautiful expensive fabrics, precious woods, unusual decorations, decorative plaster, and much more. The main feature of this style is that for its creation does not need large rooms, as in other areas. All furniture, items are practical. A person who entered the room should immediately feel the warmth and comfort of a home environment, which is created due to the forms, texture, color palette. Do not forget about smells. It is the interior of Provence inside the house that should smell like flowers, wood, seasonings and spices.

Features and main features of the style

The main emphasis of this direction of the interior is on the kitchen. In the whole house it should be the most spacious room with access to the sunny side. It is here that the maximum number of furniture, a large dining table, practical cabinets, racks for dishes and many other appliances for kitchen utensils are located. It should be noted that, respectively, the style, dining table and countertop are in the center of the room, and all other furniture is located against the walls. Items of small kitchen utensils are not hidden in cabinets, but rather put on display.In modern times, even create decorative elements in the form of cutlery and dishes, which should be placed in the visible space, to create a certain picture from the decor. However, those people who really want to recreate the atmosphere of the Provence style can use ordinary kitchen items for decoration.

White wallpaper with blue patterns in the kitchen

Among the main distinguishing features of Provence, the following can be noted:

  1. White and beige shades of the walls, ceiling of the room. The climate of this region is quite hot, while most of the time of the year the sun shines, which is why all the colors fade.
  2. Bright lighting in the kitchen regardless of the time of day. As a rule, rural houses had large windows. If there is not enough sunlight, additional lighting must be installed.
  3. Choosing furniture to create a style, you need to choose it from light wood. The body surface cannot be varnished, it must have roughness, as well as artificial chips.
  4. Simple lighting devices, without any glamor or sophistication. In some cases, you can use decorated chandeliers with wrought-iron ornaments.
  5. A dried herbarium of flowers, bundles of garlic, onions, fragrant plants, spices - all this is located in sight and exudes its aroma.
  6. Cookware is not placed on cabinets, but hangs on special devices. Clay pots are a real highlight of the rustic decor.

Color palette

The modern interior of the Provence-style kitchen assumes the presence of light pastel colors that most accurately reflect the atmosphere of rural life among pure nature, as well as the bright sun. However, the color palette has its own combination rules that must be considered.

  1. Pastel, cream, beige, vanilla colors are the dominant and background shades.
  2. Olive, blue, lilac, green colors are used in their light shades.
  3. As a rule, the main color is chosen for decoration, and then it is supplemented with other colors on the decorations, furniture, kitchen items and so on.
  4. In parallel with the shades of natural vegetation, a marine theme is used, where the dominant colors are delicate blue and beige shades.
  5. Very often, white is combined with green shades. Such a tandem creates not just soft home comfort, but demonstrates the cleanliness, freshness and non-routine of the room where the whole family gathers at the dinner table.

Bright Provence style kitchen

Attention is important! In the Provence style, as a rule, combinations of two or three colors are used, which are dominant, while the lightest shades are used. More saturated colors may be present in accessories, patterns, furniture. The entire composition is based on natural colors, without bright contrasts and transitions.

Among the perfectly combining the main positions of the color palette are the following:

  1. Delicate beige and olive. These colors are usually background, they paint the walls and ceiling. However, despite their advantage in the setting, kitchen items, dishes can also be olive or beige.
  2. Light blue and sand. This combination is close to the marine theme, which displays the expanse of the sea and the shore of sand. Here, the flight of creative imagination is quite high. You can paint the walls with sand, and lockers, a dining table, curtains on the windows can be identified with blue and blue tones.
  3. Pistachio in combination with white visually increases the space in the room. Many housewives just dream to cook, set the table in a snow-white kitchen, and the presence of the pistachio-colored interior in the furniture complements a certain modern sophistication in the whole atmosphere.
  4. White and sand colors are often used to create the design of a small kitchen. Such a kitchen looks elegant and cozy at the same time.
  5. Only white is also used in the Provence style.However, it is necessary to use kitchen utensils of other colors, textured curtains, decorative elements from wood. Otherwise, it is possible to visually turn the kitchen into a hospital ward.

What are the walls finished with?

The first step in creating a Provencal style in the interior of the kitchen is to finish the surfaces, namely the walls. For its decoration, the following materials are used:

  1. Decorative plaster;
  2. Different breeds of light and dark wood;
  3. Brickwork;
  4. Whole logs;
  5. Natural and decorative stone;
  6. Textured fabric
  7. Ceramic tile;
  8. Liquid and paper wallpapers.

All these materials can be combined with each other, but you need to consider in which room this style is created. If this is a city apartment, then it is not advisable to use solid logs or masonry for wall decoration. Such a kitchen interior is more suitable for a country house. And in the apartment liquid wallpapers on the walls, plaster of different colors and any types of ceramic tiles will look great. The exceptions are various inserts, as well as decorations on the wall. For example, over the stove you can lay out a beautiful composition of stone, with the addition of marine elements. Textured fabrics are often used for various window decorations.

Ceiling decoration

The original Provence style is distinguished by the lack of a ceiling in the kitchen. Thus, this is simply the free space of the attic where the beams of the floor are visible. Quite often, such houses were built in the countryside and in this style there is such an option for the interior. It should be noted that to create such an original version, you need to specifically build a house according to certain drawings. Therefore, in our time, designers simply decorate the ceiling with false beams, if its height allows it to be done. In a room with a low ceiling, it is better not to conduct such experiments, otherwise it will visually hang over a person, attract attention all the time with its visual weight.For the decoration of the ceiling, the following materials are used:

  1. Tree;
  2. Decorative plaster;
  3. Liquid wallpaper with textured additives;
  4. Pottery mosaic;
  5. Metal.

To create this style, you can not use modern artificial materials in the decoration of surfaces. For example, a stretch ceiling will not reflect the interior of the countryside, as well as plastic panels on the walls. Therefore, there is no need to try to use cheap artificial materials, everything should be natural not only in terms of properties, but in appearance.

Materials for flooring

Most often, wood or stone is used to finish the floor. At the same time, modern technologies also allow using matte tiles, marble, linoleum, carpet or savage stone. It should be noted that the floor lined with stone or ceramic tiles with the characteristic properties of stone is more suitable for a private country house. In a city apartment, such material will not be appropriate, and it is quite difficult to carry out this work in an apartment. For a small kitchen, wooden parquet with a characteristic pattern of all light shades, linoleum with a textured wood pattern or a small ceramic tile is perfect. However, acquiring tiles to finish the floor does not need to choose a material with a glossy surface. It should be rough, completely matte. Otherwise, the shiny floors in the kitchen will block the French rustic interior of furniture and accessories. The original atmosphere of simplicity, warmth, comfort at home cannot be displayed.

Kitchen furniture

The task of this style of furniture is to create a rustic atmosphere, to recreate antiquity, simplicity and comfort in the house. Some connoisseurs can buy real antiques - antique furniture from hand at auction. However, it will cost a lot, so it’s better to buy a modern antique version, which is made according to special projects.

Blue furniture and brown countertop

All Provence style furniture has certain basic characteristics:

  1. Tables, cabinets, chairs and other pieces of furniture are made only of natural wood.
  2. The hue should be predominantly light wood, except for some small elements.
  3. It is very important to use wooden furniture painted with paint; it most accurately reflects the interior of a rural inhabitant.
  4. The presence of a large number of shelves and open drawers in the cabinets. Chairs with high backs.
  5. Lack of hidden and complex mechanisms inside the furniture. No transformers and hidden extension parts. Everything should be simple, transparent.
  6. Furniture fittings are also made of wood or matt materials such as copper.
  7. The color of the kitchen set is plain, bright contrasts, transitions are not welcome.
  8. Modern furniture made in rural antiquity is quite relevant. It can artificially depict cracks, abrasions, peeling paint, various chips.

The use of textiles in the interior

The variety of textiles of this ancient style cannot leave indifferent true beauty lovers. The main feature of curtains, curtains, tablecloths is a patterned ornament and all kinds of ruffles, puffs, drapery. Even the chairs can be decorated with drapery. Transparent and colorful curtains can be everywhere - on windows, cabinets, bedside tables. Especially on that furniture where there are no doors. There is always a tablecloth with patterns on the table, napkins are neatly arranged in the cups, and small towels hang on the hooks. The use of textile materials also has its main features:

  1. In the design of textiles, mainly natural fabrics are used - cotton, linen, chintz. Fabrics with mixed artificial fibers are allowed.
  2. Shades of fabrics should be combined with the background color of the kitchen or with furniture. For example, chair covers with their color.
  3. Not pronounced pattern. It can be stripes, floral patterns or wave lines.
  4. All small elements of the kitchen decor are placed in a conspicuous place. As a rule, these are small towels, potholders, napkins and much more.
  5. Dense fabrics are used for curtains on furniture.

Proper lighting in the interior

The south of France is characterized by a warm climate, where the bright sun shines from morning until evening. That is why the village houses are so bright, because the sun did not leave room for flowers, they were all burned out by daylight penetrating through large windows. Provence style lighting should be as bright as possible so that the decor and rustic comfort are fully displayed. To do this, use a large chandelier on suspensions in the center of the room, as well as various lamps on the walls. Lighting is used predominantly yellow or white to make the atmosphere look warm. With this style, it’s quite relevant to use lamps completely different in format. This suggests that often women in the countryside purchase items completely by accident or at a good price, so the interior of the kitchen can have completely different elements of decor and utensils. You can also use candles on wrought iron candlesticks as lighting, which is very common in this style of setting.

Decor Elements

The modern Provence of the kitchen interior implies the presence of a large number of decor elements. At first glance, you might think that all items are simply collected in one room and arranged in places. However, each detail not only has its place, but has a certain meaning for the owner of the house:

  1. Wooden figures in the form of chickens and males are popular elements of the decor of Provence;
  2. Bundles of onions, garlic, and fragrant herbs are not only a decoration, but also a wonderful aromatic therapy for the inhabitants of the house;
  3. Clay pots and painted dishes;
  4. Herbarium in vases from natural dried flowers;
  5. Candlesticks and cup holders;
  6. Small pillows with floral patterns;
  7. Sachets with spices and aromatic seasonings;
  8. Paintings depicting a natural landscape;
  9. Wicker baskets for bread, jars for cereals or seasonings;
  10. Drawings depicting birds and animals.

Crockery and household items

The design of the Provence kitchen involves the practical placement of kitchen utensils, as well as utensils in the public domain for use. As a rule, for cooking in a certain part of the room there is a separate countertop on which dough, meat and other raw materials are cut. All necessary accessories are hung over the desktop. Jugs, cups, pots with handles, pans, various ladles are hung on a special holder. Closets and porcelain are placed in the cabinets, while it does not close with doors, but can simply be hung with curtains with ruffles. Cookware items often differ in appearance and texture. For example, dinner plates can be made of porcelain, but of different shapes and sizes. They are complemented by wooden spoons. Color shades also differ, but there are no bright contrasts. All dishes have a natural origin, a natural color. Most often, kitchen utensils are made of porcelain, wood, metal or clay. Jugs or vases with chips are not thrown away, but used as decorations with flowers on windows or cabinets.

The main elements

If the city apartment has a small kitchen, and you want to recreate the original Provence style as much as possible, then you must first arrange the main elements of this style.

  1. To begin with, the working area in the kitchen is determined. This is where the tabletop made of wood or with stone decorations should be located.
  2. A free space forms above the countertop, where most of the kitchen items and utensils are placed on the suspensions.
  3. The dining table is located by the window or near the wall with cabinets.
  4. The space above the stove is laid out in stone or tile with similar characteristics.
  5. Plumbing should not be chrome and shiny. It is best to use brass options.
  6. Decor elements are placed last. When saving space, it is better to choose practical and thematic gizmos that will not just gather dust, but will be useful in everyday life.

Thus, you can not only save space in the kitchen, but also lively, original way to convey the atmosphere and spirit of the French interior.
