Pop art in the interior

The pop art style originated in the USA and Western Europe in the middle of the last century. Its history goes back almost 70 years. Initially, he developed rapidly only in painting, then gradually switched to photography, sculpture, clothing and interior design. The name is an abbreviated form of the phrase “popular art”, which literally translates as “popular art”. Style draws inspiration from consumer goods. The direction arose as the opposite of expressionism, which lived out its last days. The well-known creators of the fading genre (Pollock, Candidsky) were replaced by new talents, among whom Andy Warhol stood out as a bright star in the sky. An artist, designer and photographer - he created a separate, independent branch of direction. She received the name of commercial pop art. Perhaps the most famous creation of the master was a diptych painting with the face of a Hollywood star - Marilyn Monroe. Warhol has overlaid over fifty images of the actress, made in different colors, using the technique of silk-screen printing.The masses liked the manner of performing the work so much that they still decorate the premises with similar stylized paintings and photographs. The main purpose of pop art is to surprise and sometimes shock the audience. At first, the direction leaked into the interior solutions of cafes and trendy restaurants, and only then - into residential premises. Find out what are the hallmarks of style, and how to find the line between pop art and bad taste.

Style features

Pop art refers to provocative and defiant directions. Its development became the prerequisite for the insanely bright and flashy fashion of the 70-80s. If you find yourself in a room decorated according to the canons of direction, you will not confuse it with anything else. Among the main distinguishing features are:

  • Using a combination of white wall decoration with "acidic" colors in the interior;
  • The abundance of posters and stylized photographs. They depict scenes from comics, the faces of celebrities using the Warhol technique and household items (consumer goods and food): cans of soda, bottles, chocolate bars, cars, music records. Patterns are often repeated in different colors;
  • In decoration, plastic, synthetics and artificial materials are preferred. Pop art does not accept luxury and chic;
  • The ceiling and floor are decorated in neutral colors, as the accents are placed in the setting;
  • In pop art, much attention is paid to the fine decor: souvenirs, figurines, photographs;
  • The main principle of choosing furniture is its practicality. Custom futuristic lines and shapes are welcome.

The above features have some similarities with the retro 80s. In fact, the peak of the development of style fell precisely on this period.

Materials and finishes

The apartment uses artificial materials to decorate the walls, ceiling and floor. Emphasis will be placed on filling the premises. For this reason, pop art is considered one of the most budgetary styles. At a minimum cost, homeowners can get an original and fashionable interior.

Walls

The coating must be chosen in white. This option is considered the best background for bright colors in furniture and decor. Walls are designed in several ways:

  • Glue the wallpaper. The simplest types are chosen: paper, non-woven or more modern vinyl. Naturally, it is necessary to take into account the features of the room. In the kitchen or in the bathroom, materials resistant to high humidity and temperature extremes are used. Embossed texture is not welcome. The simpler, the more consistent the style. Permissible use of glossy surfaces;
  • Drywall. Panels of this material are quickly mounted and easily hide a layer of insulation or flaws on the surface of the walls;
  • Decorative plaster. The most practical option is used: white, neckless coating;
  • PVC panels. The material is sensitive to mechanical damage, but easy to clean, and the damaged area can always be replaced. Pop art loves plastic, so the latter will fit organically into the interior picture;
  • Paint. A somewhat outdated option that is not suitable for walls with noticeable defects. Differs in low cost.

In the style of pop art decorative tiles do not look at all. An exception can be made only on the kitchen apron and in the bathroom.

Floor

Flooring from a laminate or parquet board is used in rare cases. Often preference is given to monophonic linoleum, which does not require special expenses, and will fit into the style of the room. A more expensive option is a bulk floor. It is distinguished by durability, lack of seams and glossy gloss. The effect of “varnished” coating is used not only in decoration, but also on furniture surfaces.It is permissible to use additional features of the material: applying vivid pictures or single characters in a particular area. For example, in the corner the cat Tom may suspiciously look at the guests, and Jerry will hide on the wall from him. This is only one of the design options that "customize" for themselves and their preferences.

Ceiling

The ceiling is primed and a layer of plaster is applied on top. The easiest and cheapest option. In more expensive interiors, plasterboard coating is used, but “steps” from this material are not welcome. As an exception, a multi-level ceiling can only be used for additional zoning in shared rooms. Suspended or suspended options also harmoniously flow into the stylistic picture, but there should not be any patterns and ornament on them. It is better to leave the ceiling covering white, as its main task is to shade and balance the “motley” environment of the room.

Color schemes

The "box" of the room is usually finished in bright colors. This is a tribute to the first design experiments that were carried out at the dawn of style formation. Now the premises allow the use of white ceilings and walls with black or red flooring. The game of contrasts is one of the “pillars” of the direction. The following shades are actively used in furniture and decor:

  • Screaming red;
  • Saturated fuchsia;
  • Acid green;
  • Juicy yellow;
  • Deep blue or cyan.

Pop art belongs to rebellious movements. If the directions had a “psychological age”, then this style would be depicted as a young man in puberty on the wave of maximalism. For this reason, color combinations may be the most unexpected. In any other direction, they would be considered for bad taste, and in pop art such combinations are considered an organic expression of non-standard thinking.

Furniture

In this style, preference is given to non-standard forms and inexpensive materials.From textiles choose synthetics, artificial leather, polyester. Sofas in the shape of lips painted with red lipstick, or soft corners "hollow" inside - an accent element of the atmosphere. If the chairs, then only plastic with bright pictures on the surfaces. Harmonious look sofas-benches, assembled from round "pieces" upholstered in artificial leather. They are interconnected by thin metal rods, which intertwine create a complex pattern. If you choose a chair, then give preference to the design “throne” with carved armrests on twisted legs, but colorful upholstery with geometric patterns. Instead of a coffee table, buy an original element: an imitation of the front of the car with a bumper on which a glass tabletop is installed. Used cabinets and chests of drawers with striped prints on the surfaces. Round poufs covered with textile of “cosmic” colors look spectacular: silver, gold, bronze.

Do not forget that only the necessary minimum is used for furniture. In this case, pop art is similar to minimalism: only practicality and simplicity. Due to the large number of accents, the room may seem “cluttered”, so be careful.

Details and decor

In the decor of the interior they use simple things that take on a new life. Such elements can be purchased from venerable designers or made no worse with their own hands. Used cans or empty bottles make vases. The surface of the container does not need to be cleaned of labels, on the contrary, their presence will correspond to the style. Even without the talent of an artist or designer, you can create a unique poster. Take old newspapers, cut out headlines or entire articles from them, and stick these pieces on a piece of cardboard in a chaotic manner. Then the canvas is decorated with a frame and hung on the wall. Glue a high mirror in the hallway with comic strip and wrap a garland of bulbs.If you still have old phonograph records, then you can deal with them in several ways:

  • Preheat them in the oven. Put gloves on your hands so as not to burn yourself, and bend the flexible edges to one side, creating a wavy edging. The finished element can be used as a flower pot or stand for a souvenir. Additionally, it is painted with acrylic or tempera;
  • Through the holes in the membranes, thread the twine, tie it with a knot over the edge of each plate to keep them upright. Make some of these "garlands" that will decorate part of the wall.

To sew soft pillows for sofas and beds, you only need foam padding and synthetic fabrics in bright colors. In addition to traditional square shapes, sew round, triangular and curly (hearts or bitten apples) decorative elements. Upholstery on hard chairs can be replaced with balls of multi-colored threads fastened together. The armrests of the sofa and coffee tables are decorated in tone with the same coating. A large number of slider stickers are applied to any surface.

Paintings over the chest of drawers

In pop art, trivial, everyday things can become a stylish design element. Do not be afraid to experiment. Wall paintings "survive" any embodiment. This can be your favorite cartoon characters, thematic photos of apartment owners or comic book dialogues in typical round frames as depicted in graphic novels.

Lighting

Lighting is created at three levels according to a standard pattern:

  • Ceiling
  • Additional;
  • Directional (local).

Forget about typical chandeliers. The ceiling is decorated with original shades:

  • Chandeliers with bright matte finish, imitating antique candlesticks with bulbs;
  • Round shades assembled in one grape cluster;
  • Imitation of helium-filled balloons flying up to the ceiling. In addition to them, “strings” are attached from below;
  • Flat round chandeliers, as if assembled from several "layers" of circles of different sizes, one of which exudes light;
  • Complex compositions of shades that are interconnected by rods in the manner of molecules.

Shelves by the wall

These are just a few of the hundreds of options. To purchase an original ceiling, it is better to turn to design collections. Additional lighting is provided by wall sconces and table lamps, not inferior in originality to ceiling chandeliers. Point light sources are replaced with garlands of white bulbs, you should not hide the wires, as they will add a special touch to the interior.

Interior design in pop art style.

In the style of pop art, the premises should look non-standard, primitive and flashy-bright. The theme of "challenge" to society style brought with him from art. The philosophy of freedom must be played differently in each room. As a rule, the design of the premises is not repeated, but only has similar features. For inspiration, visit the pages of your favorite graphic novels or photos of fashion galleries with pop art paintings.

Kitchen

For the kitchen, choose a bright set with the effect of a varnished coating. One of the walls can be decorated with photo wallpaper with a graphic pattern or a stylish accent (red lips, eyes with blue eyeshadows, cans of Coca-Cola, candy bars or packages of famous sweets) on a white background with the same bright circles. Around the glossy bar counter or dining table are plastic chairs of unusual shapes. Particular attention is paid to an apron; a drawing or picture from comics is also applied to it. Flat chandeliers are mounted on the ceiling, which are combined with shades of geometric shapes hanging on long, thin “legs”. Groups of the latest appliances are placed directly above the accent area - the dining table.

Living room

The living room must have a wide comfortable sofa. Two options are possible in the color palette:

  • The upholstery of the sofa is chosen in bright shades that “soothe” the plain cushions of pastel colors;
  • Furniture textiles are beige, white, ivory. Pillows choose bright ones with original prints or a combination of geometric lines and pictures.

The home library will give a special touch to the living room. Books are placed in shelves with open shelves by the accented wall. "Library" filling alternate with decorative elements of non-standard shapes and colors. The floor is covered with a bright, soft carpet or striped track. There is also a place for reading: a separate corner with a pair of armchairs or a corner sofa near a glass coffee table. A simple stand with a TV stand is set opposite the sofa. For a small cabinet of standard design, leave space in an inconspicuous corner. This object should not be bulky and occupy a large area.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, active pop art is slightly restrained. Posters and posters are placed on the wall, which rests on the head of the bed. The bed itself is covered with a bright blanket with prints. They can be found in curtains or rugs. The walls are traditionally decorated in white. Here, the abundance of decor will be superfluous, so a couple of hanging shelves are enough, where several statuettes or volumes of graphic novels are placed. To slightly balance the dominance of "artificiality" it is permissible to use a pair of flowers in pots that are placed directly on the floor by the window.

Pop art bedroom

An interesting addition to the interior will be the use of alternating round mirrors instead of one above the bedside table. The bed is not necessary to choose a standard, rectangular shape. In pop art, round models with smooth lines look great. Their shape can repeat the pedestal (elevation above the floor), on which the bed is installed.

Yellow curtains on the window

Bathroom

In the bathroom, it is permissible to draw all the walls in bright colors. The interior will be smoothed out due to white plumbing.Curtains are also used with prints. The bathroom is the only room where ceramic tiles look appropriate. Choose her with bright "spots" that are randomly scattered on the walls. A non-standard solution is to place paintings in this room. To preserve the paintings, they are placed in simple metal frames under glass. Similar decor looks originally near the mirror above the washbasin. Towel holders and handles are used “for metal” with chrome surfaces. Sinks are chosen mainly overhead. The shapes of the bowls can be very different, but the "basins" look the most primitive instead of the usual washbasins. It is better to choose a deep bath with high sides, which were used in the middle of the last century. If there is enough space in the room and you can install a cabinet for storing household items and towels, then its glass or empty doors between the frames decorate the blinds - a simple and practical option.

Conclusion

Pop art in the interior is an unusual style in every way. It does not have clear boundaries; you set them yourself. The description of the trend is very concise: primitivism and images of mass culture. Pop art was born in the wake of the protest, so it makes a lot of use of this practice: to go against the generally accepted standards. Despite a very solid “age”, the style is still popular and does not give way to new trends in designer fashion. It is only being improved and slightly modified in order to keep up with the times, remaining true to its beliefs.
