Bathroom without tiles: finishing options

Red glass panels in the bathroom

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms available today in almost every house, apartment. Here they take a morning invigorating shower, an evening relaxing bath, brush their teeth, wash, wash their clothes, apply makeup in front of a mirror. The original design of the bathroom without tiles seems unusual to many, but this design of the bathroom is gaining popularity, as modernity seeks to reduce the cost and simplify the finishing process. Every year there is an increasing variety of materials that are optimally suited for such premises.

Features of finishing, requirements for finishing materials

A bathroom is a room with high humidity, therefore the decoration of this room is selected waterproof. Temperature differences are also not uncommon here, because resistance to them is very important. In addition, the finish must be durable, environmentally friendly, resistant to fungi, mold, easily cleaned of various contaminants.

In ancient times, it was believed that the "wash" room should be luxurious, special - sometimes real palaces were erected for these purposes. Not all modern apartments have the opportunity to allocate a lot of space under the bathroom, and tile laid on a thick layer of cement mortar or glue will “steal” precious centimeters. Functionality is also important: care should be taken that the floor does not slip too much when water gets in - this is a risk of injury.

Many designers recommend decorating the bathroom in exactly the same style as all other rooms of the apartment, house. But there is another approach - the space fenced off from other rooms is made bright, stylish, original, regardless of the style of other rooms.

Tileless Ways

Tile is a traditional version of wall decoration, bathroom floors, for which there are many alternatives. The flooring is linoleum, a laminate with moisture-resistant properties, various types of paint, natural stone, and sometimes the floor is bulk, including with “three de” effects.

The choice of wall materials is even wider - these are panels made of natural wood or particleboard, MDF or fiberboard, glass or gypsum vinyl, three-dimensional or plastic. For their installation you will need:

  • construction level, tape measure;
  • embedded parts for hanging cabinets;
  • fasteners;
  • scissors, saws, knives for cutting lamellas;
  • baseboards for the floor, curtain rods for the ceiling;
  • primer;
  • adhesive composition.

Wall panels: varieties, advantages, characteristics

Wall panels are made of various materials, easy to install, look beautiful. They are not afraid of hot water, steam, constant high humidity, frequent temperature changes.

There are also disadvantages:

  • panels mounted on frames take away from the room up to 9-11 cm of usable area, therefore they are mounted in tight spaces with glue;
  • low strength of many types - in case of accidental impacts with a solid object, the part is easily deformed, breaks. A damaged item needs to be replaced.

When buying several types of panels, you should choose parts with the same locks.

Natural wood panels

Wood cladding looks expensive, status, it has been very popular for many years.It is made of various types of wood:

  • stained or bleached oak;
  • beech;
  • ash;
  • maple tree;
  • mahogany;
  • pine trees;
  • alders;
  • cedar;
  • ate;
  • fir;
  • Karelian birch;
  • pears
  • cherries and others

Wood paneling in the bathroom

The tree is always environmentally friendly, it is impregnated with special moisture-proofing compounds, wax, anti-mildew, rot agents, covered with varnish, accurately emphasizing the texture. This decoration is suitable for interiors in the classical style, rustic, country, ethnic and many others.

Chipboard

Particleboard consists of wood chips mixed with special glue and has sufficient strength. Lamels are covered with protective agents to prevent rotting, mold, and painted in various colors. Particleboard panels have a relatively large weight, poorly tolerate direct water.

Particle Boards in the Bathroom

If there is a real or electric fireplace in the bathroom, the room will not be excessively wet - the fire can quickly dry it.

Fiberboard

Fiberboard - a durable material consisting of fibers, produced in various thicknesses. He is not afraid of blows, hanging shelves, mirrors. These parts are produced in the form of sheets, battens, tiles of various shapes and sizes. Suitable for facing walls, ceilings, painted in all kinds of tones or varnished, but getting water on it is highly undesirable.

MDF panels

MDF sheets are made from fine chips, which are pressed using high temperatures under pressure. The topcoat contains components that protect against water. The material is strong enough - hanging cabinets, shelves are attached to it, but if the protective coating is damaged, the trim fragment needs to be replaced, since water easily penetrates inside.

Glass panels

Facing walls and ceilings with glass is a bright, modern solution. This decoration is used in the interiors of high-tech, loft, minimalism, futurism. Glass is selected tinted, frosted, transparent. The surface of the special glass for the bathroom is perfectly flat; it can have photo printing in the form of drawings, ornaments, whole pictures, mainly with marine, forest, and floral themes. Parts are attached to the walls in the same way as mirrors. On a whole wall, one or two, maximum three glasses, is enough - the fewer joints, the less likely the appearance of fungus, dirt, the easier the maintenance of these surfaces.

To increase the moisture resistance, the panels are painted with suitable colors with acrylic paints. The decoration is suitable for various interior styles - from baroque to futurism.

Plastic panels

Organic and PVC lamellas are available. Hardboard is a special type of plastic, outwardly panels from it resemble glass, but a little cheaper. PVC panels are sold in various colors, with ornaments, patterns, imitation wood or stone texture. They are waterproof, have a low price, are available in the form of slats, sheets, square, rectangular tiles.The coating is mounted with glue, wires, pipes, heat-insulating materials are hidden behind it. Such walls are well washed, easily repaired in case of damage. But plastic emits a small amount of chemicals into the air, and in case of fire - especially toxic smoke. Therefore, it is advisable to pass the wiring through special fireproof cable channels.

Surface painting

To paint the walls, floor, ceiling in the bathroom, the painting composition is selected as follows:

  • moisture resistant;
  • vapor permeable;
  • eco-friendly;
  • durable.

Attic bathroom

What paints are good:

  • all kinds of colors, shades;
  • they are relatively cheap;
  • quickly applied with your own hands - you don’t need to be a specialist for this.
  • But there is a serious minus: this coating looks good only on very flat planes.

Alkyd enamels for the bathroom are not recommended - they form a film under which moisture accumulates. Due to the dampness, the paint will begin to fall off after a few weeks. Aqueous emulsion will suit more, they are available in the following:

  • acrylic - simply, evenly applied with a thin layer, may contain latex, to increase strength, elasticity of the coating;
  • silicate - a strong, wear-resistant coating that can last up to 15-18 years, almost without losing its attractive appearance, but in places where direct jets of water often fall it is not advisable to apply it;
  • silicone - are quite expensive, reliably paint over small cracks, narrow cracks, have high vapor permeability, are composed of silicone resin;
  • Mineral - the most economical, budget option. The composition contains lime, cement, is applied to brick, plaster, concrete walls, but the coating is not very durable.

Decorative plaster

It has some positive features:

  • unlike ceramic tiles, this material is easily vapor permeable;
  • decorative plaster holds heat well;
  • easy to clean;
  • hides wall irregularities;
  • does not accumulate static electricity;
  • It has a beautiful appearance, an original relief surface;
  • It is beautifully combined with other materials;
  • can be used as a frame for mirrors, decorating false fireplaces.

Decorative plaster in the bathroom

The main disadvantages of this design are the high cost of its individual varieties, the complexity of the application, which also affects the final price of the finish.

The following types are available:

  • mineral - does not pass water, is resistant to hot steam, will last 25-30 years;
  • acrylic - has a set of various useful properties, which allows it not to lose appearance even after 40-50 years;
  • silicate - is more expensive than others, does not fade under the influence of sunlight, is not affected by mold, fungus, serves more than 55 years.

Decorative plaster on the walls in the bathroom

In appearance of the finished surface, decorative plasters are made:

  • smooth - the glossy plane perfectly repels moisture, the coating is available in any color, the coating with a cracked texture, a variety of stencils, and handmade drawings looks interesting. The most popular representative is Venetian plaster;
  • structural - has a certain repeating relief. This texture is "bark beetle", "pebbles", etc.

The main disadvantages - the coating is heavily cleaned of dust, dirt, which is easily retained in every bump, is much less than completely smooth.

Choose a wallpaper

In a cramped bathroom, voluminous wall panels or tiles are replaced with thin wallpaper. The advantages of this finish:

  • low cost of most varieties of material;
  • You can stick it on your own - alone or together;
  • it is quite simple to dismantle if you want to update the interior;
  • a huge variety of drawings, ornaments, textures;
  • Suitable for most interior design styles.

Negative sides:

  • not all varieties are able to withstand high humidity, which leads to their excessively quick spoilage;
  • materials attached to the glue can eventually pass the glue to the front side - this will lead to a loss of appearance;
  • paper is able to swell, deform, peel.

Which are the best to choose:

  • washable - an ideal option for the bathroom. Such wallpapers have a specially treated dense surface that does not allow water to pass through, will last a long time, remaining in good condition. The coating is well washed from any dirt, fungus, mold do not settle on it, due to increased smoothness. Glue it easily with your own hands using wallpaper glue, then smooth it well;
  • liquid - applied as putty, reminiscent of a plaster mixture, requiring dilution with water. The coating is applied with a spatula - after drying, the surface resembles real wallpaper without seams. The material looks great, lasts a long time, is not afraid of water, steam, sudden temperature changes;
  • vinyl - resistant to direct water, constant vaporization, various temperatures. The cost of this type of wallpaper is relatively high, as well as performance;
  • self-adhesive - the back surface of the product is covered with a special adhesive composition, which allows you to mount it without any additional funds, just slightly moistened with ordinary water. The material is one of the varieties of vinyl;
  • cullet - has excellent performance properties resembling glass. Such a finish does not absorb water at all, tolerates temperature fluctuations, is easily and simply painted in a variety of colors, does not require special care;
  • Photowall-paper - quickly, inexpensively and completely change the appearance of the room, creating a bright accent spot.The material is resistant to water, steam, temperature changes, looks great for a long time, does not flake, is mounted with wallpaper glue.
