Art Nouveau Kitchen: Design Examples

Modern kitchen design

Art Nouveau is sometimes also called "modern classics." Style really is a discreet mixture of elements with light luxury and minimalist ideas that are so popular lately. We can say that Art Nouveau appeared on the ruins of the classics. At the beginning of the last century, the Old World embraced a wave of popularization of history. This direction is characterized by accurate copying of interiors that were fashionable in the distant past. In fact, this is a kind of "great-grandfather" of vintage and retro. Original versions of the eclectic mix of interiors appeared, but the design required a breath of fresh air. In contrast to historicism, modernity arose as something conceptually new, unusual. The direction was created on foggy Albion. It was the old England who gave us poets, writers, designers, illustrators and architects who became the fathers of modernity.A powerful impetus to its emergence was the tradition of exhibitions, which demonstrated the most modern inventions, which were subsequently introduced into the interiors. Art Nouveau kitchen design is suitable for calm, restrained people who are not alien to the use of the new, but at the same time they are partially constrained by internal conservatism. In the article we’ll talk about how to properly furnish this room and what tricks are hidden by “modern classics”.

Distinctive features of style

Art Nouveau from other styles is distinguished by a number of features that allow you to create a unique interior composition. The main features of the direction include:

  • The combination of angularity with smooth lines and rounded corners, on which the geometric contrast of the interior is based.
  • The minimum amount of textile.
  • The abundance of modern technology, which is neatly placed in a strict "frame". Art Nouveau became the forerunner of constructivism, which in turn gave rise to cutting-edge high-tech. There is a similarity between these three styles.
  • Only light decor. In this regard, Art Nouveau is in many ways similar to the concept of minimalism.
  • An original and bold combination of shades on a pastel background of wall decoration.
  • The abundance of glossy, shiny surfaces that seem to flow into each other. The origin of futurism is traced here.
  • Functionality and conciseness.

Also, Art Nouveau is characterized by large spaces that let air into the room. In general, the interiors look stylish, elegant, but slightly aloof and reserved. Art Nouveau is ideal for a person who is not alien to modern ideas, but squeezed into the uncompromising framework of conservatism.

Pros and Cons of Style

Art Nouveau is strict and concise.It can be safely contrasted with a sweet and rustic Provence or excessively chaotic eclecticism. This direction is not suitable for those who love lively, catchy interiors. Modernism, like minimalism, will be a real chance to "fix the situation" for small spaces, where every meter is worth its weight in gold. Due to the gloss of surfaces, a small amount of furniture, complex, but beautiful geometry, a small kitchenette will seem larger. Although the closest "relative" of modernity to the stylistic "family" is considered a classic, this trend is devoid of pretentiousness and pretentiousness. Here the designer can safely use not only expensive wenge or luxurious ebony, but also plastic, glass, steel. You can create an expensive interior for luxury apartments, as well as a budget option for more modest studios. However, it is worth remembering that modernity will not tolerate cheap imitations, quality for style is above all. The direction is devoid of strict frames. This is one of the main advantages. Based on the general rules, you can create the author's content of the kitchen, which will not be like any other. At the same time, do not forget that you will have to select special furniture, the configuration of which should stand out against the background of typical interior details. Modern appliances perfectly fit into modern kitchens. This is another advantage, because in many classic areas, the benefits of technological progress have to be skillfully masked so as not to spoil the authentic environment.

Another practical plus can be considered a small amount of textile, which quickly absorbs kitchen odors. Owners do not have to constantly wash large quantities of fabric decor, which will free up more time for themselves.

Art Nouveau color scheme

In the design of the kitchen, modern designers, as a rule, resort to conservative color combinations, that is, the atmosphere is “warm”. But the direction is open to experimentation.The background is traditionally performed in light pastel shades: white, gray, ash, blue, beige, peach. Furniture usually has contrasting facades in brown tones: from dark wenge to soft walnut. In spacious kitchens, you can use a black set or a combined version, where the upper part is made in light and the lower part in dark shades. In bold design experiments, olive, coral, purple, blue, cherry and even lime or yellow are added to the decor. As a rule, glossy facades of the kitchen set are made in these shades. "Acid" colors began to be used relatively recently. We can say that they are characteristic of the modern version of Art Nouveau, since earlier it was dominated by natural shades, the use of which was inspired by the surrounding nature.

Lighting

In Art Nouveau, they try to let in as much natural light as possible into the room. In the sun, glossy surfaces will become a brilliant addition to the kitchen. Windows, as a rule, are closed with roller blinds, which allow you to adjust the light intensity. The ceiling has a central chandelier with a simple configuration. If the kitchen is supplemented by a dining area, then it is replaced by a group of three to four small lamps that are located above the table. Classical Art Nouveau is not characterized by the abuse of decorative lighting. In modern versions, the beauty of the interior is emphasized by light bulbs placed on the ceiling around the perimeter of the room or above the headset. The working surface must be supplemented with spotlights, which simultaneously serve as decorative lighting.

Materials and methods of decoration

The walls are covered with monophonic vinyl wallpaper, covered with moisture-resistant plaster or ceramic tiles. The latter option is preferable, since the material has increased strength and will last for more than one year.In more refined interiors, the use of artificial or natural stone is permissible. For flooring, ceramic, linoleum or laminate are used. The latter option, although it looks beautiful, will not last long. A stylish solution will be the use of a self-leveling floor, which combines strength and aesthetic appeal due to the gloss of the surface. The ceiling is plastered, painted or a stretch web selected. They do not emphasize it, so they choose the classic white color. The apron is finished with ceramic tiles, and here you can even use a surface with a thin, light pattern of intersecting smooth lines that resemble the interweaving of tree branches or flower stems.

Art Nouveau wall panels

In the modern version of Art Nouveau, the use of ceilings of complex configuration is allowed, where a frame is used, sheathed with sheets of moisture-proof drywall. This technique is necessary for zoning the kitchen or dining area in combined versions.

Furniture selection

Furniture in Art Nouveau itself will become an accent and decor in one bottle. It should be selected with special care, focusing on three main nuances:

  • Functionality;
  • The form;
  • Material.

Furniture should be comfortable. Beauty at the expense of comfort is not about modernity. Unusual, creative forms are chosen, where there is a combination of smooth lines and sharp angles. In materials, preference is given to either natural or high-quality imitations.

Kitchen set

The kitchen should have smooth, glossy surfaces. There is no problem with the refrigerator in this respect, but the rest of the furniture is specially coated with varnish, acrylic, film or enamel. In small kitchens, headsets are arranged according to a corner or parallel layout. Spacious options use an island location. The classic Art Nouveau is characterized by the use of natural wood in furniture. A modern style variation favors cheaper plastic.It has an obvious advantage: a wide range of shades that wood does not possess, sandwiched as part of a gradation of brown. Also, a modern style kitchen set is characterized by the use of a combined storage system. In this case, half of the drawers are hidden behind the doors, and the other part remains open. They, as a rule, place meager interior decor.

Lunch group

For the design of the dining area adjacent to the kitchen, the bar becomes the best option. With an island and peninsular layout, it also has a hob (one of the sides of the working triangle). Tall metal chairs complement the furniture set. The countertop can be made of high quality plastic, glass or stone (natural or imitation). If you still prefer a regular table, then its shape should be knocked out of the usual framework. Choose round, semicircular or square options, but with smooth corners.

Textiles, decor and accessories

As mentioned above, there is little use of textile in Art Nouveau. Curtains choose two to three tones lighter than the color of the wall decoration. They are complemented by a translucent, weightless tulle, which during the day lets in maximum light into the room. In modern versions, Roman, roller or Japanese panel curtains are used. Decorative filling is very ascetic. It is enough to hang a clock or a mirror on a wall, a home photo gallery at the entrance or a pair of sconces. Simple vases, plates on supplies, indoor plants, containers with fresh fruits or pots with spices are placed on shelves. Tools for work (scoops, spoons, shovels, whisks) can be hung in a row on a special metal handle, which decorates the kitchen apron.

Conclusion

Modern is a universal direction.It can be implemented in any room of the apartment: bedroom, living room, bathroom, hallway. Perhaps the only exception will be only the nursery, where a strict interior seems too inappropriate. There are two versions of Art Nouveau: classic and modern. The first gravitates to the predecessor styles, and the second is like an ennobled high-tech. Both design options are popular.
