Art Nouveau bedroom - sleek modern design

Art Nouveau bedroom

Art Nouveau combines versatility and practicality, elegance of forms and luxury. The interior is dominated by streamlined shapes, natural materials, plant patterns, arched structures. The design of the bedroom in modern style provides quiet lighting, noble unobtrusive tones, an abundance of objects made of glass and wood. The room creates a comfortable atmosphere for relaxation without too much variegation and oversaturation with decorative details.

Lamps in the form of plants, porcelain metal accessories, a mirror in an elegant frame, curtains with dense drapery complement the bedroom interior. In the modern interpretation of Art Nouveau there are objects made of chromed metal, modular furniture, paintings, photos with plant motifs, mystical creatures, female figures.

About Art Nouveau: History and Key Features

The direction was formed at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. At that time, it was really modern; it arose as an alternative to mixing heterogeneous style elements from different eras and cultures. The course existed until the end of 1914 in all areas of art and design, freed from a solemn and magnificent decor. In the interiors appeared consistent lines, the unity of decorative details and furniture, the integrity of the space. Used frame structures, new building materials (glass, reinforced concrete). After decades, the Art Nouveau style has not lost its relevance, attracts with lively and beautiful forms, harmony, functional layout.

To design a bedroom, you must take into account the characteristic features of the direction, observe small details. You can imitate the style with the help of decorative objects, lamps, furniture.

Who will suit the modernist style

Sophisticated design without strict forms is universal, like young creative people and people of the age who prefer colorful, elegant low-key decor.In the teenager’s bedroom, the Art Nouveau style can be diluted with loft elements: objects and lamps made of chromed metal, a laconic transformer bed, open shelves, and a rough wood texture. Creative natures include the combination of bright and neutral shades, multi-level ceiling designs, stained-glass windows, photo wallpaper with large drawings in the design of the bedroom. In the girl’s room, you can choose a bed with a curved headboard, brighter colors of upholstery and curtains, for example, burgundy, yellow-peach, lilac. A man’s bedroom needs solid furniture in dark colors, discreet curtains, a floor lamp, and frosted glass lamps.

Art Nouveau with streamlined shapes, the absence of sharp corners and sharp edges is suitable for small bedrooms. Spacious rooms have more opportunities for using stained-glass windows, glass elements, metal accessories.

Color spectrum

Art Nouveau eliminates sharp boundaries and transitions, walls and ceiling must be maintained in the same color or close tones.

For the background, apply the colors:

  • sand;
  • cream;
  • halftone green, purple, blue;
  • pearl gray;
  • beige;
  • Ivory;
  • dusty lilac.

They can be diluted with deep blue, anthracite, dark purple, black, terracotta, ocher, wenge color. In the bedroom, men choose finishes in steel, tobacco, brown, swamp colors. The mysterious atmosphere in the women's bedroom is created by muffled red, yellow, aquamarine, dusty pink, lavender shades. Bright notes are made by silver and golden picture frames, mirrors, smooth strokes on floral patterns, lamps. Dark flooring can contrast with light walls and ceilings. Soft, warm colors combine glass, metal, and wooden surfaces.

Materials and features

Designers use natural building materials, crystal elements, art forging, stained glass.

  • Any kind of wood, of varying degrees of processing, is used for floors, doors, wall finishes.
  • Glass blends nicely with light walls, metal elements. The glass partition with painting does not overload the room, maintains the integrity of the interior, isolates the bed from the dressing room, work area, territory for games or classes in the children's bedroom.
  • Metal elements in the form of pens, frames, frames of mirrors and paintings, elements of lamps - the necessary touches of the modern style. Details should be elegant, with smooth bends, weaves. Noble looking forged furniture legs, headboard.

In contrast to the design projects of the last century, now when designing a bedroom in the Art Nouveau style, analogues of expensive natural materials are used. On the windows, casement windows, film stained-glass windows look good. Wooden floor surfaces are replaced with a laminate with imitation of parquet texture.

Floor

Suitable material for decorating the bedroom floor is art parquet with floral patterns, intertwined stems. Borders, sockets on the parquet flooring emphasize the rounded shape and the absence of sharp corners on the furniture. It emphasizes the Art Nouveau style with a fir-tree parquet board, a budget laminate for parquet. Looks nice oak wood with radially spaced rays, pink-gray beech with wavy fibers. The dark floor contrasts with discreet walls, gives the interior dynamism. Light flooring is suitable for small and narrow bedrooms, creating an accent in tandem with carpets of green, blue shades.

Unpretentious porcelain stoneware is faced with a warm floor. Collections of natural shades of tiles with mosaics, images of branchy plants, imitation of marble, wood are specially produced.

The shining glossy surface makes the shaded small-sized bedroom more light and attractive. Opaque floor porcelain tile does not glare, creates a cosiness.

Walls

Wall surfaces serve as a backdrop, should be concise and discreet.

Decorative plaster creates different effects on the walls:

  • marble gives the room a special chic and elegance;
  • silk and velvet fascinate with soft tints, form a warm relaxing atmosphere;
  • travertine brings a feeling of luxury and tranquility to the room;
  • the luster of pearls makes the cramped bedroom visually spacious.

The walls of the Art Nouveau room can be plastered and painted. Green, beige and lavender shades relax, laconic white is a good background for furniture. Lilac and ash pink colors are suitable for creating a romantic atmosphere. The accent area is recommended to be painted in brighter colors, decorated with patterns, wood panels, golden ornaments, and paintings. Modern design projects emphasize the style with textured wallpaper with asymmetric and wavy patterns, glossy overflow.

Ceiling

It is desirable that the design of the ceiling overlap with the shade, the decor of the walls. The emphasis is on shape, contour lighting. Joints and corners unacceptable for style soften baguettes, plaster, stucco molding. Two-tier ceilings, combining rounded figures, wave-like lines, fit into the concept of Art Nouveau. Stretch fabrics with a satin texture, muted brilliance look spectacular in niches of a multi-level ceiling. Visually expressive ceiling coverings with ornate ornaments and floral patterns imprinted in the structure are relevant for large rooms. In a bedroom with modest parameters, a ceiling of one level or a suspended structure with a glossy insert and a small transition of levels is appropriate. White PVC or fabric canvases with printed irises, butterflies, ornaments of peacock feathers, flowers, curly stems create a modern atmosphere. Stained glass inserts give fragility and charm, but are only relevant in spacious rooms.

The ceiling should be a continuation of the walls, merge with it, match or slightly differ in shade.

Lighting

Visual comfort depends on the choice of lighting fixtures. Lamps must proportionally correspond to the size and style of the bedroom. For zone lighting, it is recommended to choose pendant light sources with narrow beams of light, to install a floor lamp for reading and hang a sconce at the head of the bed. Full relaxation is provided by ceiling lighting.

In Art Nouveau chandeliers, lamps are used as style-forming elements.

Distinctive features of modern style lighting fixtures:

  • lampshades in stained glass technique;
  • arcuate and round brackets;
  • bases made of bonza, wood, forged elements, ornate details;
  • frosted glass shades in the form of buds, balls;
  • crystal pendants;
  • spots on imitating branches of nickel or copper fittings;
  • combination of rounded and broken lines.

Furniture selection and placement

The bed, as a key element of the bedroom, should be made of expensive wood, metal or a combination of these materials. Forged, wooden headboards fitted with fabric or leather fit into the modernist style. There is no deliberate splendor in the design of the berth, a laconic design is preferable, the upholstery is consonant with the tone of the walls. In the spacious room, round models are appropriate, which occupy a central place and look extraordinary. At the foot of the bed, a small oval rug contrasts with the floor. The chest of drawers and the cabinet are complemented by handles made of ivory, chrome, and bronze. The sash of colored glass and the sandblasted stained-glass window are expressed to the maximum extent possible. Cabinets are placed along the far walls or in corners. A dressing table is placed instead of a bedside table or in a corner by the window.

The main rule when choosing furniture for a bedroom in the modern style is a minimum of objects, streamlined flexible forms, ergonomics.

Textiles, accessories and decor

The style is complemented by curtains made of heavy fabrics reaching the floor with the image of branches, birds, lilies stretching upwards. The necessary surroundings are created by brushes, pickups, lambrequins, cords. The sophistication of Art Nouveau is emphasized by bedspreads and pillows made of satin, jacquard and brocade, combined with patterns on the walls. Doors are decorated with stained-glass windows, mirrors, panels of curved shapes. Monochrome fabrics matching the color of furniture support a single style, harmonious atmosphere in the bedroom.

Make the missing accents:

  • figurines of glass, wood, crystal, bronze;
  • candlesticks;
  • stucco molding;
  • mirrors in heavy frames with carvings, curving lines;
  • photowall-paper with pulsating lines, collages from plants, wavy ornaments;
  • paintings, reproductions depicting long-haired women against the backdrop of nature, floral arrangements.

Conclusion

Despite the refinement and abundance of decor, the main principle of modernity is thoughtfulness and functionality, a monotonous color scheme. Lighting, furniture, a combination of design elements, natural shades are conducive to a relaxing holiday. The calm colors of the walls and textiles are in harmony with the decorative accessories. The bedroom takes on a dull appearance, in a cozy private area it is pleasant to relax from the rapid rhythm.

To combine furniture, surface finishing, lighting, you need to take ideas from the surrounding nature, be inspired by the beauty of climbing plants, oncoming waves. When you design a room, you must select the main element, under which the shades of finishing materials, other items will be selected. If possible, there should be a lot of free space in the bedroom, wide aisles to the bed.
